Aloha everyone,
I have tried to not post for about 3 weeks but I just can't move forward. I have read and tried to follow everything on the site but I am just confused. I know this is a developers site and I am very intimiated to be castigated by you guys but...it's the internet so what the hell.
I have found numberous instruction threads pertaining to updating ROMS on the Wizard. It seems that up until recently there was only one way to do things but now there are many. As I try to answer questions I come into conflict over which way I shoudl be heading.
I currently have a working WIZ100 that boots with IPL 2.21.0001 SPL 2.21.0lip with GSM 2.25.11 and OS 2.25.11.1. I somehow got to this point, I think by following the instructions to get hardSPL on my device and booting on startup. I did not know if I next needed to find a ROM and if so then how to get that ROM activated on my device or what programs to do this with. I know that the threads spell it out but the threads pertain only to direct assumptions; the assumption that my head is not in my ass.
I wanted to attempt to put a new rom on here, for fun and to play around with something new. Perhaps increase reliability or to get WM6 going. I am stuck now though. Part of me wants to turn back and load the original ROM from the HTC site and the other part of me wants to try a new ROM as I already have this thing booting to the 0lip SPL.
Is anyone out there willing to help me either via this thread, personal message or IM?
Since you have already installed Hard SPL you should be safe to go ahead and pick virtually any ROM you choose on there. I don't have a lot of experience with Hard SPL yet, except for installing it on my kaiser, but the one thing I would guess that you should make sure that the ROM you want to flash doesn't have would be an IPL/SPL update included. As far as I know, I don't think any of the public ones that you find on here have them but make sure you read the chef of the ROM's entire post to make sure. And, if you magically happen to find my ROM somewhere, which you shouldn't since I only gave it to 2 people to try, don't flash it because mine does include an IPL/SPL update.
From my best understanding you have already loaded HardSPL and now are CID unlocked. If this is the case then I would recommend going forward and flashing a new rom to your device. Just go to the Wizard Mobile 6 thread and find one you like, and flash it.
Simple as that.
I appreciate your replies.
1) I am clarified like butter! What program do I download and use to flash the ROM to the Wiz, this has been a source of confusion for me.
2) If I download and install the HTC Cingular ROM from HTC, will that overwrite the HardSPL and return my phone to Factory Default, including the radio areas? In other words do I rid myself of 2.21.0lip?
Thanks for not beating my head in...very polite you devs are...
I like beating people's heads in, and you are far too polite, that I am actually having a very slight guilty twinge! Damn you. I have a G3 myself so I cannot help much, however, I found this sticky which may help.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332320
I do know that once you choose your rom, you open the folder and run the item marked as ruu.
Now if you only had a G3, then I could fry you like the noob you are.
I suppose at some point, I should make a point of reading/learning about G4's. I know they are a far different animal from my G3.
That's the reason I said not to flash a ROM that contained an IPL/SPL upgrade since there is the possibility that it may overwrite Hard SPL, although I'm not positive of that, but better safe than sorry especially if it it's not an official ROM that carries the correct IPL/SPL format for a G4. If it doesn't contain the correct format for a G4 it could ruin your phone. If you flash an official ROM though and it overwrites it you can always just reinstall Hard SPL again and keep flashing. I hope this makes sense.
As for the files you need to flash a new ROM, they're usually included with the ROM. If they're not then just let me know and I'll upload them for you.
Good that you asked before damaging your (expensive) device...
Every Flash version comes with a RUU (Rom Update Utility) you just run that proggy and it does the rest.
To make it easier, look for a rom that states it's G4 safe (no IPL/SPL included), so you don't have to mess around with the inner files. If you want to, begin your tests with the TNT series, the latest build, stated in my sig is G4 safe, after that you'll be able to know the initial procedure.
Good Luck.
Thanks for the info.
Do I execute the ruu from Windows XP or from the SD card ont he device?
Why am I have a hard time searching for and finding TNT 5.2.1921 TouchFlo ROM?
The rom update utlity gives me an error when I try to update. Should I try to do all this from the sd card?
Well, I am plugging along. I rebooted after an error 300 came up on the rom utility. Any suggestions for me?
I found this thread, back in business, thanks for your help guys.
I guess my only unanswered question is...if I use the HTC ATT exe from htc.com will it kill the hardSPL and restore the computer back to normal?
If you have ROM on your desktop, Connect your phone to your computer via USB, open up Activesync, uncheck the check box in settings that allows USB connections. Make sure you have at least 50% battery, then put your phone into bootloader mode. (soft reset while holding down the camera button- keep holding the button for 5 sec.) a tri-color RGB screen should come up. This is boot loader mode. Then run the rom update utility program, and everything is automatic from there on. once it is done flashing the phone will restart itself.

Try it and find out. I'd kind of like to know the answer to that one too, although my phones a G3 and already CID unlocked anyway. You can always reinstall Hard SPL over again if it does.
So this worked out well for me overall. Installing HardSPL to my G4, and then using a correct bootloader with the right ROM (to review).
I am having one issue.
I have the OEM ROM, however the RUU gives me an error. Is there a documented way to restore the phone to an original status? Is it even necessary?
I ask due to problems since my upgrade to the TNT rom. I am noticing a lot of missed calls and people have complained. Is this an issue with the 8125 and the particular ROM?
I don't know what to ask, or how to search for this. Thanks for any input you can offer.
Otherwise the TNT rom is awesome. I do miss the voice dialing though. Thats another search.
Actually, that's usually an issue with your radio version. Try using either version 2.19 or farias 2.69 and see if that fixes your problem. You should be able to find both of them in the wiki and you may want to try both of them and see which one gives you the better reception because sometime one will work much better than the other for you depending on your location.
By the way, you don't have to be CID unlocked or have hardspl installed to update your radio so you shouldn't have an issue with the RUU giving you an error. If you do, let me know and I'll upload a different RUU for you to try.

So the Rom is broken up into major parts. Those parts must ineract with one another, so that would be why my radio version may be at cause?
Yep. The ROM can contain the IPL, SPL, OS, Splash Screens, GSM (the radio), and extended ROM, any of which can be changed or upgraded individually without affecting the other parts of the ROM (for all intents and purposes anyway). That means you can change your radio version without it deleting all of your settings or your installed apps in your OS, etc etc.
Since you still upgrade each individual part using a RUU that is able to update any of the parts you still get a warning when you run it that it will delete all of your files, but as long as the update that you're running doesn't include a new OS you can ignore those warnings.
I decided to back out of the entire upgrade and move back to WM5 Official Cingular HTC ROM. I am stoked that I now know the full process of taking a G4 through hardSPL, ROM updates and restoral.
I was too scared to try any radio updates or fixes. Maybe when I upgrade phones I will come back to playing with the 8125 but for now, I just need a good functioning phone for work.
Do these Cingular radio fix cabs apply to a standard phone or only to upgraded ones?
Hi two days ago i decided to put the jachero rom on my g1 and it said i had to update the radio so i did then put the latest spl so i did and after i renamed the spl to update.zip and applied it. my phone got bricked and i cant apply the dreaimg.nbh to wipe everything and cant go to recovery and i dont know if it will never work again?? please heelpppp!!! oh yyeah and im 13.

it seems like you're pretty bricked.
Please give more information on your procedure.
If you cannot boot into recovery (home + power) or the bootloader (camera + power) then it is most likely bricked. If you have insurance, just tell T-Mobile that your phone told you that there was an update available, and when you clicked OK, the phone restarted and then you were stuck at the G1 screen.
um
well i dont know anything how to flash cyanogen
on the jachero page it said get the latest spl so i updated and after that canot go into recovery
so i only have warranty no insurance

if you dont even know what your putting on your phone, you kinda deserved it...
Use your warranty, tell them there was an over the air update and ur phone ran out of battery in the middle of it.... and read up/think before doing something like that again...
theres really nothing you can do now. You need to give us more detailed procedures if you want a second opinion
well
i did know what to do but since i already have the latest radio then i just put the spl and if i get another g1 if i already have the hard spl do i need to put the latest because igot the hard spl from another forum but since the jachero page told me to update it i did that maybe i dont have the latest radio but no since anymore and thank you i will tell tmobile i got a ota but didnt the ota thing stop like 3 weeks ago i dont think they will believe me that i just got an ota barely

So? Just say that you had your phone off for a few weeks cuz you went on vacation and chose to bring another phone for safety's sake, and when you got back, you turned on the phone and presto! OTA update...

1) Use full stops, 'cos that's near impossible to read.
2) No, hard SPL will not work you need Haykuro's SPL.
3) Your phone will only have bricked it you had the old radio OR you did not have a PVT board. Did you look in the bootloader before you flashed the new one? I'm guessing not.
4) Luckily there was a security (I think it was security) update that was just released, so they shouldn't qustion it.
ok sorry
Ithink the warranty will cover it
I would go with the OTA story especially since there was just an OTA update released that has been pushed to phones over the last few days. I know a few people who also didn't read up before they started flashing and they too bricked their phones however, the OTA story worked most of the time. This is really your only choice seeing that you don't have insurance on the phone. Good luck
Just use the OTA story again lol
Tmobile wont hassle you too much about it.
Make sure you download the Radio that Haykuro provided, flash it, then boot into the bootloader to make sure it reads properly. Also verify that you have a PVT board.
Put the update.zip with the SPL on your phone AND VERIFY THE MD5 CHECKSUM (you should do it with the radio too actually)
and continue to follow the proper directions.
If you brick after following that, use the OTA story again but stick to HardSPL lol
what is checksum and pvt board?

PVT board is the board that won't brick when flashed with the Danger SPL. Just another design. You can check your board revision by booting into bootloader (camera+power).
md5 checksum is a special key that is tied to the file that is generated based on that file. If the file that you downloaded is corrupt or different compared to the original file, the md5checksum will be different, letting you know that you need to re-download the file or risk a brick.

I want to put a new ROM on my fresh ADP. Do I need to put a new radio on before I update to HardSPL?
This thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
seems to suggest I might need to, but this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=455860
doesnt mention it.
How can I find out, or is there a simple yes / no ?
Thanks.
If it is hardspl then no you don't need the new radio. If its the new danger spl then yes. But it is a good idea to update your radio anyways.
Thanks.
danger SPL sounds like i might want to leave it alone...
If I was going to update the radio anyway then is the one in the linked noobs guide above the one? Or are there options? Ive had a dig and although its easy to find the SPLs and Roms and other guides, I havent seen much about radios.
flash the radio http://sapphire-port-dream.googlecode.com/files/ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip
without flashing a new radio then bluetooth will not work in then new rom
Thanks for the help everyone. Thats awesome.
er.... is there a way to check if it worked and what radio it's using? It seemed to be so quick I'm not sure if it can have been right?
It only showed the unpacking animation with the open box and the status bar for like a quarter of a second... and then it went back to the triangle with the exclamation mark in it.
I did Home + back to reboot and its loaded up fine all working. But no clue if it did anything...
To check is real easy,
Look under settings> About phone>
It is listed in the Baseband Version. If it ends in 26I you are all good.
Yea its a small file so it won't take long at all to flash. Sounds like it worked.
Thanks guys.
I used the radio marked as most recent:
ota-radio-2_22_19_26I
Baseband version on my phone says:
62.33.20.08H_1.22.12.29
Doesnt end in 26I... Just spotted that radio is shown in fastboot screen and it lists the old one as well.
Odd.
Wierd, It is a small file and shouldn't take long to flash.
You are definitly on the old radio still.
After you update it should tell you to push a key combination to apply the radio.
Turns out my update.zip was called update.zip.zip ... oops. So it hadnt done anything.
Fixed that and the radio update took a few secs and is working fine. Its listed correctly now as you said it would be in the settings / about screen.
Thanks again for the help folks.
No problem. Might want to show extensions on your pc so it don't happen again.
i was rooting a friends g1, i missed a step n tried flashing a rom without having the danger spl installed first, i cant get into my spl menu by holding camera and power nor can i get into my recovery nor can i get into adb... my phone turns on and stays at the g1 logo... any advice?
bricked.. look in the development section for un-bricking guides... although it'll cost some money i think.. i'll look for one myself and post back with a link

Just because the phone is rooted doesn't mean it is magical and can't be bricked. You have to have the latest radio before you can flash the danger SPL. Depending on which method you used(likely RC29 method) that radio would not be anywhere close to what is needed. And, yes, once you flash the danger SPL without the newest radio, you have a brick and no way getting back from it.
Hopefully your friend is understanding and it isn't a major disaster getting a replacement G1 for him.
Flash Danger SPL without Latest Radio = Bricked.
I hope that your friend can get a replacement without much complications, because that one is screwed.
You could give him your phone...
the phone already had the newest radio installed... it was a brand new G1.. =X did i still have to flash it with the radio on this forums?

Most likely yes usually when something is brand new it was manufactured months ago. Its unlikely that it included the proper radio. try blaming your friend lol good luck!

Brand new or not, most every root method has you downgrade to RC29, which takes you back to a radio that is about a year old now.
I have the Rogers HTC Dream and I was going to update the radio blah blah to the 2.22.19.26I one so I put the radio on the sd card and in preparation I was going to do nadriod. But I wasn't paying attention at all and flashed the radio instead (I am an idiot).
Now it is just stuck on the Rogers screen and holding the home button or the camera button doesn't do anything.
I am fooked arn't I
Any help?
Bricked....try looking into this....its cheapier than buying a new phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576628
Im sorry for your phone...
Can you get into adb at all? I didn't do that exact issue, but one time I did something that screwed up some things, I couldn't boot the phone or get into recovery, but I was able to adb into it, reapply the recovery.img and then get into recovery to reflash a ROM and everything else.
Computer doesn't recognize the phone at all
I phoned and told them that the new update for the 911 fix bricked it. They said they will send me a new one and if there is no water or hardware damage it will be covered. It's not water damage and it's not hardware damage (it's software ) so I will see what happens.
They didn't mention anything about software and they might not check so I might get lucky.
so your comp doesn't recognize it in fastboot also?
i thought i was bricked till i realized that RA Recovery 1.5.2R didn't work when i downgraded my EBI1 radio to .26I one. had to load 1.5.2w/o R to make things work again.
then again, im all new at this stuff (just a few days). so i might not even know what the hell im doing.
yes your right that I would need a new recovery also but it is too late now as I can't get into fastboot or recovery and computer doesn't recognize my phone while it is stuck on the Rogers Logo.
I assume the new dream that they send will already have the new SPL, radio and rom so hopefully someone will be able to root the new "perfected" SPL by the time that I get it .
I saw in the Saphire section that you should beable to use a goldcard but I am not sure if that works for the Dream also... I guess I will find out once I get my new Dream.
Are you sure its not finished installing yet? It took two reboots and a few minutes to install the radio on my phone. I couldnt do anything and I was really scared, but then I just left it on and it finished on its own=p GL
