I am using Myn's Warm Donut, but from what I can tell I've had this problem on most if not all distributions I tried.
When I connect my HTC Touch to my computer via USB (Win7 x64), I can't get windows to detect it, and so I can't access the SD Card.
However, I have found that I can successfully access it by using the replimenu when booting. It does take about a minute before it manages to connect though, but it always works.
Here's what happens when I select Start Recovery Mode:
Code:
USB Connected
Start Charging
msm_hsusb_set_vbus_state(1)
hsusb: OFFLINE -> ONLINE
hsusb: reset controller c5cccc00
usb: notify offline
set address to 1

[USB finally connects and the sdcard is mounted in windows. Total time elapsed since USB was plugged in: about 60 secs]
It always starts working after the fourth try, at address 2.
Do you have any idea what is going on?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
P.S. I have tried on two different Win7 x64 computers and one XP x86

are you using free automount app or the paid dual mount app?
I tried auto mount without any success. Maybe there's system logs I could fetch from somewhere?
Also, do you know if it is normal that it needs about one minute and 4 tries in order to successfully connect in Recovery Mode?

did you check the box in the app to enable it after installing it?
Yes
What seems to happen is an endless loop of:
Code:
USB Connected...
Preparing SD Card...
[Wait 15 seconds and repeat]
In the same manner I described earlier.. except it doesn't end up connecting after 4 tries like in recovery mode
EDIT: Oh! I let it go a while longer and after something like 2-3 minutes it finally managed to connect.
Am I the only one experiencing this delay or is it "normal" for our device?
just wait longer. walk away from it for like 5 mins. When im using eclair it takes alot longer than donut. It sems to connect and disconnect like 50 times before actually connecting. This is normal.
It works indeed.
I would be interested in looking at the logs and trying to understand what is happening (and maybe even fix it!).
Does anyone know where I should be looking at?

I cannot get ActiveSync to detect my phone.
I get the XP message "USB Device Not Recognized" when I plug in the phone.
I have checked my USB drivers. They are more up to date (2004) than the ones listed on the Microsoft support page listed in the ActiveSync readme.doc
I am running ActiveSync 4.5 on a Windows XP laptop
Windows Mobile 6 CE OS 5.2.1620 (Build 18125.0.4.2)
on an Orange Tytn II (ok, I will flash the rom once I have a working ActiveSync!)
I have tried switching off the firewall on the laptop - no luck.
Changing the in "Enable advanced network functionality" through the 'USB to PC' connections makes no difference.
In the Get Connected Window USB is listed as having status "USB is available" after clicking Next on Checking COM ports (it takes a while).
I have uninstalled and reinstalled ActiveSync 4.5 (obtained from both the CD and the Microsoft web site).
I have done the usual cycle of switching everything off and rebooting (several times).
I have tried all four of the USB ports on my ASUS A6000.
New suggestions for things to try most welcome.
I did have the same problem myself when I first got mine. I also tried turning firewalls off etc. The only method that seemed to regularly work was to reset the kaiser and ultimately a hard reset
i had a similar problem and i found it was because i still had the nokia phone sync software on my pc too .. removing it sorted the problem
Soft reset the device, reboot the pc.
If USB syncing doesnt work, try bluetooth.
Works for approx 30 secs after reboot
I think I have a faulty phone.
ActiveSync works for about 30 seconds after a reboot, as does gps tracking, and then the connection is lost (and gps fixes on the last tracked location). I have tried soft/hard resets, all to no avail.
Unfortunately I bought the phone in London and I will have to wait until I am next in London to take it back to the Orange shop for a replacement :-(
I am having the same issue but I cant get activesync to work at all
I could recognise the kaiser on one PC but not on another, messed around and go it working then it stoped , all along it was mt Firewall, disabled the fire wall never had any more problems with activesync. that was my issue might be something for you to look into

I think your phone is ok. ActiveSync always gives all kind of problems.
I sync my kaiser on my desktop, my laptop and at work. For some reason, my desktop had exactly the same problem than yours. I tried everything!
Finally I found something that made it work much better. Go to Settings->Connections->USB to PC and uncheck the option 'Enable advanced network functionality'
After that, I still get some random disconnects, but only happens like every 3 or 4 days.
Hope it helps.
I had this same problem (device not being recognised) but fixed it by connecting the USB directly to the PC not via a USB hub. This makes me think that the TyTN II requires the maximum current from its USB connector to work; a hub reduces the available power; some PC connections may not have enough and this could account for the problems some users are experiencing perhaps??

Have you fixed the problem yet? I'm having the same problem and tried everything suggested here.
I tried it on 2 computers with Vista. First it worked, but since my laptop with XP isn't reacting on my Kaiser anymore, Vista can't find the Kaiser too. Only a friend of mine, who has a Trinity, can use activesync. Is flashing a good fix?
Found solution to my problem
I have finally found a solution that works for me (having tried everything that everybody has suggested, plus more).
I found that if you have a password enabled (ie, something that has to be typed when the phone is first switched on; available via Settings -> Personal -> Lock) and a firewall running, then an ActiveSync connection fails for no obvious reason.
Disable the firewall and your phone will prompt you for the password after which ActiveSync works.
Disable the password and there is no prompt with/without firewall and ActiveSync works.
In my case I also had to untick the 'enable advanced network functionality'.
i am starting to thing there maybe a big problems here , i have the same thing and nothing has helped,,diffant pc`s i have hard reset the phone, unticked Enable advanced network. and still nothing.
The problem that I found was the notifications queue for ActiveSync on my phone had been corrupted.
I downloaded memmaid and used the "recreate Activesync" under the database menu.
Unplug from the USB, run MemMaid and on the "JumpTo" softkey go to "Databases\Notification queue". Tap on the arrow to the right of "Add..." and tap "Recreate ActiveSync". Soft reset your phone wait 60 seconds after everything is loaded and plug the USB cable in. You should be good to go.
This is a known problem with ActiveSync and happens on a plethora of WMD's, not just the Kaiser or HTC. I used to have the same problem on an iPaq PPC. Microsoft's official answer to this was it was the OEM's fault for not following strict rules on implementing properly coded USB drivers.

Sorry partner, I guess it's not always the same problem.
So I connect my Tilt to my laptop via usb & then it proceeds to do approximately 5 consecutive complete synchronizations. If I leave my phone connected via usb, the phone will make the ActiveSync tone (which I chose) seemingly randomly once every 2 - 10 minutes even though in the ActiveSync window on my laptop there is no change or movement from the previously completed synchronization (all 5 of them ).
htc is stumped, we arrived at the last resort of just disabling the tone altogether. I think that's kind of lame...raising the white flag, so to speak. I kind of like the tone even though it isn't vital.
Help me out here, guys. Any ideas?
Am I the only one that's experienced this?
Any ideas?
Can anyone help me out?
i think i have the same. while I am listening to streaming radio, i hear that activesync sound from time to time. but the phone is not synchronizing at that time.
anyways, there is nothing wrong in the end right?! it does not bother me.

I got the same problem. Find any solution ?
Same problem, would like to know the underlying cause.
When you phone is plugged in, it immediately Syncs, then every 5 minutes or so It Resyncs.
If you are running XP, I assume you would be using ActiveSync you can turn off the sounds all together.
On your PC. Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Sounds (Tab) -> Scroll all the way to the bottom find Micorsoft Active Sync, Click the Connect Confirm, Set to None in the Drop down, Same the With Disconnect Confirm. Ok and that should stop the sound.
Peoples,
I am finding that whenever I attempt to copy a large file (>50Mb) to my device and SD card from PC using Activesync that it copys "normally", then times out, and tries to do it again! This happens for quite a while until I cancel the transfer.....
I am thinking that somewhere I have to change a setting so that this can happen (increase timeout length?, whatever.....)
Appreciate any help here, as I have had this issue with not only my Kaiser but other devices as well (Orbit).....
Many thanks!!
Have you tried waiting a looong time?
If you mean the Activesync progress bar jumps back to the beginning and then appears to start again, it's not actually timing out. The problem is simply that Activesync's progress bar misbehaves under large file transfers. If you just leave it for ever and a day (thats the normal time for large file transfers under Activesync) you'll find it should complete the transfer. If you need to get the files across onto the microSDHC card much quicker then just use the card reader it came with (at least for Sandisk 6 GB cards here in the UK).
get a cheap microsd to usb adapter as a reader
Thanks guys, I usually use a card reader but sometimes get lazy and think I can just "quickly" copy accross....appreciate the info, just never was patient enough to wait out what looked like a failing transfer!!
Cheers!!

The key is to realise it's not a failing transfer (despite what Activesync appears to show). I've used Activesync for large file transfers (using both USB and bluetooth) and since installing my USB 2.0 adapter card in my PC (to replace the onboard VIA USB 1.1 ports) I've made many large file transfers to the microSD card in the device and it always gets through in the end. Usually I just start the transfers before I go to bed and its ready in the morning. Will mention this bug to HTC in my next letter (one of many to add to the list).
Glad I could help.

In my case, I believe that it is actually timing out....
This happened to me several times, when I tried to copy a slightly larger file, it looked like Activesync timed out the connection.
A few times I tried transferring files of a few mb in size to/from my Hermes or Kaiser while connected via activesync, and it disconnected before the file was done.
If I am not transferring files, it seems to stay connected. Is there any way to prevent it from happening?
If it's just transferring files, there are many workarounds. However, I've got problem sync'ing my Kaiser with Lotus Notes via EasySync (from IBM). I have about 6000 calendar entries. Lately, every time when I tried to sync, EasySync went through about half of that, then quit - complaining about unknown error. I suspect that ActiveSync (which EasySync relies on providing the connection) timed out on the connection.
I did a lot of search on the web, and this forum. there were many hits on Google. But most of the questions and answers were more related to Exchange Sever timeout.
MSDN library does have a discussion thread. there is supposed to be a registry key called: "GetObject Timeout " on the PC side in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners\DeviceID\Services\Synchronization. However, I cannot find this anywhere.
Any suggestions?
thanks very much!!!

If your Activesync connection is disconnecting altogether then thats not timing out. I had this problem when using my old VIA Motherboard USB ports and it was simply because the USB hardware/drivers weren't up to the task. Since installing my new NEC Chipset USB 2.0 Hi Speed PCI card the difference is like night and day in terms of Activesync connection reliability. What USB ports on what device are you using? What happens if you try the transfer using a Bluetooth Activesync connection (other than it taking even longer)?
Check out this application I put together. It is a simple stand alone app for true tethering over bluetooth...
http://www.androidactivity.com/
You must have a rooted phone for this app to work.
Installing app now... Any chance of getting this to work with OSX as a Bluetooth PAN device? Or is it limited by the profiles? Would love to use it without booting into VMWare.
UPDATE: Works flawlessly (so far) under VMWare in Windows (MacBookPro). Not having any luck getting it to work natively as a Bluetooth PAN device in OSX though.
can one of you do some speed tests?
sounds great anyway, well done.
I couldn't get the network to show up in XP.
I paired ok, but windows says "no bluetooth devices or computers that support pan...". I even disabled the company cisco security agent.
The phone shows up in the list of devices with pass-keys in windows, but it shows the phone is not advertising any services.
Any other how-tos out there?
My phone runs the JF1.41 for ADP1 if that matters.
I'm going to try in Linux and see how that goes...
Update:
Works fine from Linux, so I guess I won't worry about it not working for me in XP.

pand --connect aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff ; # put in your phone's bluetooth address to connect to
dhclient bnep0; # pull the ip address from the phone (should be 10.0.1.5)

I works like a charm....not as fast as I would like on a 3G connection in Minneapolis but it works. I'm pretty sure this app will get better with time. Oh and I'm using(shamefully using) Vista. I might try it out on the window7 beta once I install it.
Works in linux and winxp. I have not tried in mac or other windows. Winxp may be a little finicky, make sure you have service pack 3. Sp3 adds a refresh button to it bluetooth network connects window, you may have to hit this a few times. If you are still having trouble in winxp try repairing the device.
Works good. Like was said, not the fastest, but works.

Thats probably why im running sp2 right now. Will update and try again, thanks!
Wow! Four months into the making and he uses the words "simple application" to describe this awsome piece of work. LOL. I can't wait to try. I was very hesitant to even get the G1 because I tether a lot with my laptop when I'm out. I'm so tired of pulling my sim out to put it in my Wing or Tilt just to get online with that slow EDGE network. This just made my day and its even going on my home screen! You sir, are the man!
Uhhh... okay. I don't suppose that you have any support for Vista do you? My bluetooth adapter won't recognize ANY services for some reason for my G1. Damn! I was so looking forward to using this too! Any ideas?
Okay... I was persistant enough and managed to get connected ONCE. I took advantage of it and took a screen shot to show you what I saw. I did a "whatismyip" search on google and it indeed came up as T-Mobile US. It seems a bit finicky. Good start though. This DEFINITLY could be released to Market as soon as some kinks get worked out.
I did not try this in vista myself. But someone did say they got it working in vista, read the earlier posts of this thread. For those trying winxp sp2, I did get it working, but it is a lot tougher in sp2. I have to pair the device again. It is easier to go to sp3 or at least install the hotfix.
As for the list of services issue in vista, this problem occurs in xp as well, no service comes up, bur it still works. It has to do with a windows issue. The g1 doesn't publish the service at first when it is paired, but later when you start my application and hit start, it starts publishing. The problem is windows never updates the service list and think no service exists.
Update: If you must get this working in winxp Service Pack 2, view this MS knowledge base article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926720. This describes the workaround and provides a hotfix to get the refresh button. I had this problem in service pack 2 and I did not install the hotfix, instead I just upgraded to Service Pack 3.
Anyone get this working with Windows 7 beta? No luck here so far when they are paired.
Any help on getting this connected on OSX would be appreciated. I can get the G1 paired with my Macbook but it will not connect and the tethering app says it is starting then goes back to the 2 buttons and there is no connection.

baderfgt got it working in OS X, you may want to PM him and see what he did.
As far as my app is concerned, there is currently no status if it is running or not. If you hit start and it does not give you an error, the service is running. So when it goes back to the 2 buttons it is running and that is how it is supposed to work.
After you pair your device you can then hit start on my application. Then you need to go back to your Mac and click the bluetooth icon and then click Join Network On [android device name]. I never done it myself on OS X, but that is how it should work. Read this article http://blog.karppinen.fi/2007/04/bluetooth-pan-supported-in-mac-os-x-1049.html
If in OS X you do not see Join Network On [device], make sure you have version 10.4.9 or later. If it is still not working you need to somehow refresh it (I am not sure how to do this in OS X).
DUN
I believe this creates a PAN connection. In order to hook up with my TomTom for data services, I believe I need to create a DUN connection. I attempted this yesterday before I found the application you wrote, with no success. It seems with JF1.41 dund is compiled, so it shouldn't be any more difficult than pand to get going, but I don't know what parameters to pass and there isn't a way to hook up to the IFUP and IFDOWN delegates like there is with pand.
Hello;
A curios thing happens every time I plug my kaiser to the PC with USB:
The proxy adresse of my 3G+ connection changes automatically from 195.115.25.129 (SFR/Vodafone France) to cpmeursault.d075.cp (or to cpchaume.d097.cp.... this change everytime)
Please see the attached screenshot.
Even if I replace it with the right one, it changes again a couple of minutes after that and as long as the phone is plugged to the USB.
Once I unplug it and I put 195.115.25.129 as a proxy, it stays like that!
This occurs to me only with my company's computer, not with my personnal computer.
I changed my ROM several times but it still happens, that means it comes from the computer not from an application/virus on my kaiser!
What makes me crazy is that the proxy changes always to something different, this means also that it does not come from my company, we have only one proxy here and it has a significant name!
Does someone please have an idea?
Thank you all.

thank you for advice,

actually, now, the proxy is not replaced by another one, it is just removed!
Every time I plug my Kaiser to the computer my proxy desappears and the text box becomes blanc!
