By installing the new ROM my phone works better and faster, no lagg.
But I understand that it can be even better...
I have deleted bloatware (using root explorer) and at this point have not reinstalled many of my apps (waiting for the next DC ROM release)
How can I find how much free space / memory I have left on my phone?
RAM, MB, etc?
I have read that if you monitor the use of space then it will be a fine tune machine.
I read about Ap2sd and that might help? Others say it doesnt beacuse it slows the response time when running an app.
Any words of wisdom?
Thanks
Any help will be appreciated.

should be in q/a or general forum. not here for future reference this forum is really for devs and ROM discussion only...not general questions like this.
with that said...
each person could probably give you their own ways of tinkering with their ROM and making it "faster".
You can download systraymonitor from the market, which gives you RAM/MEMORY/BATTERY, etc.
A2SD could be beneficial if you are installing more than 25+ apps, as it allows your system memory to combine with a partition of your SD card, thus keeping available memory higher, which leaves plenty of room for browser cache, app cache, etc.
Welcome to the wonderful world of ROMs for our Hero.

ap2sd only helps really if you have a fast sd (ie aftermarket class 6 or 10) but ap2sd is mainly to free up space, you won't notice a preformance boost this way.... at least I haven't even with a class 6 card. It's just to allow you to install tons of apps.
android self manages it's ram but there are times where it doesn't do it very efficently, there's roms out there esp from flipz and darch that optimize the internal task killer/memory management to give a more fluid expereince.
I would reccomend agianst a task manager as I've had nothing but problems with it.
as far as making it faster look for roms that have JIT, BFS, and/or overclock. Mind you each one of these removes stability from a stock based rom, they're not perfect but they are pretty nice. And in my opinion the leeway you give is worth the benifit with that type of thing. But each one of those has a significant preformance boost advantage. BFS being what I reccognize as the biggest improvement in overall system preformance.
I would personally reccomend fresh toast, really research how to install it correctly but it's one of the best most stable I've personally tried. Next being my personal favorites darchdroid.
hope this helps.

Grease Lightning yo!!!!
In all seriousness, if you wanna rev up your performance but at the expense of our already limited battery life, try out FreshToast 2.1 or if you want a clean trimmed vanilla feel try out DarchDroid and make sure you follow the directions for getting the OC app configured (OC Widget or SetCPU)
That'll definitely give you the max possible bang out of your phone. Buyer beware, these roms are not without their quirks, so please for the love of NY Cheesecake (oh hush, haven't eaten since 8am this morning heh) read through each of the respective threads to hunt down and possibly cure the kinks that plague your configuration.

Ive had my phone overclocked to the max the last few days. Running smooth. I underclock while phone is sleeping
I made mine 3x faster by picking a rom with no sense, rm EVERY apk that I don't use ( friendstream, flickr, tweet, etc...everything except what I USE) and apps2sd. I run a buke naked pure hero, installed apps i DO want, and it never lags. I Only get 2.2 mflops

I am a Tilt 2 user... I have been playing with alot of the different roms out there and i find them all to be very similar. I dont know what the difference is in Manilla, and Sence. I kinda fingured out what HTC messaging is... Not a big fan of it.
Here is what I am looking for:
SPEED.... when I press a button... i want it to get to that screen fast! I dont use many apps other than basic features. MMS, SMS, EMAIL, PHONE, and Camera. I do sometimes use the GPS. but not often. I could care less about the stocks feautre.
I prefer the windows threaded mesages... not the HTC one.
I do like the Facebook integration on some of the roms but that is not required.
What would you guys say is my best option at this time? Titanium?
I second this. I have never worked with a phone that is so SLOW.
I have no choice but to use this phone as it is supplied by work.
Fast rom needed.
HALP!
yes, go with the energy titanium rom, it's quite zippy if you're looking for that. but realize this phone only has a 528 processor so it still won't be all that fast if you're comparing to other people.
I realize that it wont be as fast as the 1GHz HD2 that is out now... but i just want to squeeze a bit more out of the device i already have.
The phone itself isn't slow... Bad made ROMs make it slow.
Try LBFAR or Simplicity. In my *PERSONAL* opinion they are a lot of faster then any Energy ROM.
Also they aren't bloated with crap...

Massive +1 to this. I use Simplicity myself most of the time. It's pretty light and fast. (Not to say that LBFAR isn't light or fast. It is both. It's just a little bit too psychadelically colored for me.)
Also, Jackos's ROMs are pretty nice as well, and are generally what I'm running if I am not on Simplicity. They're not built specifically for speed, but they're really well crafted and end up being faster than many other ROMs because of it. They're also rock solid. Just tossing that out there, as Jackos seems to have passed on the opportunity to toot his own horn.

I am downloading Jackos right now... if the silly file host didnt limit me to 1 file per hour i would have already had it.. but its going now. I am going to try a couple of differnt ones... as well as over clocking app.

I didn't say that he shouldn't perhaps pick a new ROM that he likes, first. But I also wouldn't call overclocking an "extreme" tool - OCT seems to work very well and my phone is 100% stable, without dynamic overclocking.
I would never recommended an overclocking tool for a new user.
Firstly, how can you be sure that the tool doesn't deal damage to the processor? It's out for just around 2 months.
Secondly, it does shorten the battery life (it may does dmg to the battery too).
Thirdly, it may cause lockups, power management problems, SoD etc.
Yes I would call the current OCT1.5 tool stable enough running at 710Mhz and yes it does speedup our devices, but I still wouldn't recommend it.

Yeah, totally valid points. I kinda fired that suggestion out off-the-cuff right before class started last night, and very obviously didn't flesh it out appropriately.
Overclocking IS an advanced tool and it does impact the stability of a device. Some handsets tolerate it much better than others, but without first having a good working understanding and feel for both the hardware and the ROM you're using, it can cause no end of frustration trying to figure out what settings work for a setup individually (it's like voodoo magic; all settings very much have been found NOT to work for all people).
The first step should be to find a stable ROM and become familiar with how it works, and then start dabbling carefully only AFTER reading the bejeezus out of the OC thread (seriously, RTFM), should a person still be interested.
That being said, in my experience the settings that work seem to be more hardware-dependent than ROM-dependent. After pretty thorough experimentation to find the settings that work well for my TP2, I've been able to carry those settings across several different ROMs without issue. Of course, that being said, I will fully admit that I believe that no amount of care will cause an overclock setup to be as stable as a non-overclocked setup.
Also, yes, overclocking definitely burns through battery life, just like turbocharging burns through gasoline, and this almost assuredly decreases the useful lifespan of your battery. While I'm less certain about the potential for processor damage, that does very possibly exist as well.
That being said, I'm a reckless jerk and always load OCT as one of the first steps on a new flash. However, I do so after having taken all of the above into consideration. It was hasty and ill-advised to recommend that a new user jump in uninformed. My bad.
I haven't noticed a big difference with overclock, so I decided not to use it... The truth is that the phone is perfectly fine. The biggest culprit in all of the slowness is HTC "Bloatware" Sense. I'm seriously considering paying for SPB mobile shell or something similiar and scrapping Sense completely right now, it just doesn't make up for how demanding it is.
/rant off.
I am open to the possibility that at least some of what I perceive could be a placebo affect, but I definitely feel that there is a difference when my TP2 is overclocked to 787mhz, and I currently feel no compulsion to discontinue doing so.
Thing is, I have to admit that the perception is primarily felt when trying to feed the Sense 2.5/CHT resource devourer combo, and even then the TP2 falls noticeably short. It is painfully obvious that Sense was not meant for the TP2, and OC is really just the slap-patch that allows it to limp along at an arguably acceptable pace.
I've been internally debating about going back to SPB MS myself. The amount of functionality that it has is incredible considering the scant resources it uses. I actually meant to drop it back in this past weekend before I got swept up in other nonsense, as I found a little app/toggle somewhere here on xda that claims to switch between manila and SPB MS. I've got CHT on right now, because it is oh-so-pretty, and I am quite fond of my current layout's aesthetics, but it is a total dog, even on Simplicity.
I downloaded the leaked froyo firmware to my captivate hoping it would solve a lot of the issues of lag but it still lags a lot like it's a phone from 2006. I downloaded the Ryan ZA one click lag fix and it still lags. I wanted to put voodoo on it but I have froyo and I don't think it will allow me to do it...what the heck is the problem and why is there so much hacking I have to do to get it to run smooth. The HTC Aria runs blazingly fast and quick from what I read and this Super Phone Galaxy S runs slower than a Hero? If anybody has an answer I'd like to know or if someone can offer some suggestions on how to improve this. It's pretty annoying.

Its called RFS... call up samsung and complain to them about it...
so many problems with this
a) wrong section, Q&A or general please
b) notice that word "leaked" in what you said? it means this isn't OFFICIAL, which means it likely ISN'T the final release, so it's bound to have at least some bugs.
c) ryanza lagfix is placebo and awful and doesn't work at all (on top of that, ext2 is a bad choice)
d) if you understood how/where the lag was coming from, you'd know why voodoo is "necessary" on 2.1
e) the aria is built EXTREMELY different from the captivate, it's like comparing the iphone to the nokia n8... yes they're both android, but they're built different which leads to complications
f) voodoo is not yet available for 2.2 because we don't have source code for 2.2 (again, if you knew how voodoo worked, you'd know why it wasn't instant)... we can hack it in with initramfs, and there are people working on it... but it isn't top priority
g) and shockingly a SMALLER piece of hardware with a SMALLER resolution made by a company known for making quality android phones runs smoother? shocker. honestly.
h) if you actually had any other real world interactions with other android phones, you'd know the lag is occasional but not unusual (hell I've seen just as bad or worse on the droid x before)
i) I suggest you read, read, read, search, read, read, and think before you make posts like the above (why on earth you thought this belongs in development is beyond me)

There are two kinds of lag. I/O lag is caused by the delays in accessing data stored on your phone in some partition. This is largely due to the use of RFS by Samsung, and the voodoo lag fix gets rid of most of that. Unfortunately there is no voodoo on Captivate leaked Froyo yet, as the source code has not yet been released by Samsung. The OCLF type fixes will help some by masking this lag when the amount of data being written and read is small. When a large amount of data is involved, these fixes will lag, as they still sit on top of RFS.
There is a second kind of lag due to memory shortage. This will hit you after the phone has been on for a while. This is similar to the paging seen on Windows, where the data has to be fetched from the hard disk. This type of lag is best fixed by installing a memory management application. The one I use is called Autokiller. Despite its name, it is not a task killer. What it does is make sure that a certain amount of RAM is always free. I use the strict profile, and my phone can go days without having to be rebooted.
troll. go get an aria then^^
save a galaxy s for a person who can truly appreciate it.
by accident I posted this in the development area, I didn't realize until after the fact, my bad.
So do you think I should put my phone back to 2.1 on my phone and apply voodoo? My phone lags quite a bit, it's bad.
I'll try out that app you suggested, thanks.

I had the same issue when I installed the leaked 2.2.
I did a master reset, flashed back to stock, master reset again, flashed to 2.2 cognition. Now I don't know if the second master reset was necessary, but my phone is faster than ever. Very few problems, in fact... less problem than the 2.2 leak.
Just flash to cog 2.1.6/2.1.7. I have absolutely no lag at all. Though even at stock my phone wasnt crazy laggy like your claiming your phone is.

Autokiller is NOT a task killer. It changes the memory management profile that defines when the apps are closed. This is a combination of the amount of free RAM and the type of app and the state it is in. I also disagree that free RAM is wasted RAM. If you are trying to open a webpage and the amount of RAM is low, the system has to decide to close something else to free the space you need. If the profile of what to close is inefficient, you will frequently run into low memory situations, when the system has to continue to close some apps to free up the memory, and you will see lag as the system works it out for you. What makes you think that the profile that Samsung chose to determine when to close an app is necessarily the best one?
I had posted this on the Q&A forum and it was suggested I come here. Didn't want to seem completely inept, but alas, I am. Here is my questions from the original post:
I really need massive help. Obviously I am brand new to this forum and have absolutely NO idea what the jargon or codes mean in these threads. Overclocking? Rebooting into recovery? SU? Kernal version requirements? I am merely a car guy and will gladly assist in ANY and all car questions. This is what I would like to accomplish. Root the phone to delete the useless programs that are just taking up space. Namely, Amazon MP3, Facebook (don't even have an account), Goggles, Google Search, Latitude,Talk, Twitter, Voice Dialer and finally Voice Search. I figure I don't need many of these since when I do actually use most of those Voice type programs Vlingo is used. Am I wrong to delete so much? A ROM is basically the screen design layout and buttons correct? I am needing set by step (Barney style) instructions on how to accomplish what I would like to do. I currently have a Droid 1 with version 2.2.1; Build FRG83D; Kernel 2.6.32.9-g68eeef5 . If that makes any sense or helps in my quest great, if not please let me know what else is needed. I have Windows XP if that matters as well. So like I said, if you have car issues or just want a little more performance or gas mileage I can help. I'm partial to domestics, Chevy especially, but can definately assist with them all. Thanks in advance all!
I will answer the general questions and leave droid specific answers to other as i have a milestone (international version of droid).
First question:
Do you have any other reason to root besides deleting apps?
Are you running out of space?
Deleting apps will mostly let you reclaim space on your phone in order to install more applications. If you are not running out of space, this may be unnessary. This is especially true now that apps can be installed on SDCARDS. Space is now less valuable than it once was.
Another typical reason to root your phone is overclocking. This means running your phone at a higher speed than normal. This will help with games and general responsivness/snappiness of the phone. Potential side effect are higher heat and reduced lifespan of the phone. but if you are following advice here, you are most likely safe.
By the way, a ROM is a combination of operating system and applications. People customize a system image (programs, speed, themes, art, configurations) and distribue it as a ROM.
I hope this clears a few things up.
I am only asking because most people root their phones t

I don't know what else is possible honestly to do after rooting other than deletion of the apps. My phone has at bet 60M or so of space when using task killer. I see the new phones have huge internal memory by comparison. I have moved every app over to my SD that I can. It does seem to move much more slowly than it did when I first got the phone back in April, maybe overclocking is a good idea? How much does it hurt your phone permanently. I'm used to holding a phone for two years at a time now. Thank you very much for the input. Is Milestone so far different that your methods won't work for me?

Overclocking will make you phone feel like a new phone.
It is not VERY risky, but it most likely voids your warranty.
It is also not an all or nothinh deal. There are degrees of overclocking. For example, most phones in the droid/milestone series are set (factory setting) to around 550mhz. Many people set their phones all the way up to 1ghz (1000mhz). I don't.
I run mine at a max of 800. The phone runs cooler and the battery lasts longer.
I dont know how different the droid and milestone are. I really dont want to mislead you with bad info. You should break down your searches into bite sized pieces. Root first, then overclock.
I am certain that good guides are available on the site to root/overclock a droid.

First of all, "I feel sorry for the people on MIUI Forums, disregarding every bug and making people feel as if we should pay Xiaomi for using their devices "
Coming to the point, we all are aware how bad MIUI is at multitasking on MI 3. Heck, I feel jealous of my Galaxy Core(2+ years old) having 1GB of RAM but still able to hold 3 CHROME tabs along with other apps at once.(My MI 3 on the other hand, -_- )
I am least bothered about the "low ram visible to us" thing people complain.I just want proper multtasking capability on my 2 GIGS of ram, and by multitasking, I mean background caching of apps.
Thus , me being a noob, need help to promote this thread so as to find a way ( like buildprop file tweak etc.) which we can use for the MEMORY MANAGEMENT problems on our STOCK MIUI Roms.
I really have lost all hope that we'll be getting proper sources for bug free ROMS, so this is a humble request to all capable developers that we have here.

Changed the option to OFF.REBOOTED the device. Will test for one day, and let others know!

UPDATE

Thanks in advance!! :fingers-crossed:

So as an update, after changing Memory Optimisation to "NONE" , the situation has improved only by 8-10% or so, and the RAM management issue remains the same.So I am probably stuck with the phone for another year. Atleast the phone does not lag one bit.

First thing I did when I got this phone, was to flash a custom ROM. I came form a Nexus 4, where very few people use the stock ROM.
Right now, there are plenty of excellent options for the Mi3.
I have been using EOS for about 2 months now, and I highly recommend it. I installed an app called Resource Monitor Pro, which allows you to display available RAM on the screen - I have positioned it to just next to the (centred) clock.
Between updating to later versions of this ROM, I have had 300 hours of uptime without any sort of lag, using all sorts of apps and games: RAM management has been exactly as expected - between 400mb and 600mb free. That is, the ROM is doing a good job of managing memory, killing old tasks and keeping recent tasks in memory until something else comes along.
If I were you, I would read up on how to get into the dangerously addictive world of custom ROMs...
Okay, one more solution if you want to stick to miui (as it is the most stable rom) and not lollipop roms.
Use a third party MiUi rom. These guys have really improved multitasking on the modded miui roms. I don't know if its allowed to post link here, but there you go :

The only reason keeping me from trying a custom rom is a working camera with good pictures, and certain deal breaker bugs.Do you suggest to try the ROM inspite of the above?

Yup.. I'm using it for past 2 weeks. Its very fast as compared to original miui.
1) multitasking is better. On original miui, suppose you have chrome opened with 3 tabs, you get a sms containing OTP, you open the msg, copy the OTP, switch back to chrome and you find that all three tabs start to load again, and whatever transaction you are in between on lost.
But in this ROM tabs dont reload. When you open a lot of apps together, then only old apps are closed automatically..
Try it.. You can flash it on your current MiUi without wiping system or data. Remember to flash Gapps after flashing this rom.. It dont have GApps built in..
