Can PaulOBrians Froyo update work on a AT&T model phone?
I have the Tmobile version but a mate at work has the At&t Model and wants me to flash it for him tomorrow..
Any issues with flashing the new radio?
I have an AT&T N1 and Pauls Froyo works great on mine, I am not on 3G though, some users are reporting hideous speeds on 3G and so they are just downgrading their radios only. Wait for a few more replies just to be sure

I have had a t-mobile G1 since they first came out, only problem is that i`ve been using it on the Rogers network in Canada. The problem with this is that I can not get 3g on my phone, only Edge...which at times is rather painful. I know you can root the Rogers G1 but from what i`m reading there are limitations to the Roms you can put on it. I`m using cyanogenMod (latest) and i use switchrom to try out any new roms that are put out there. Also use A2SD.
What are the limitations, can i still do all that on the rogers G1. If not, is it worth it to sacrifice the 3g to keep these features
There are two ways to root the rogers dream. The first way keeps the original radio but you can only flash roms with a 32A kernel. There are ports for cyanogen and others, check out the sapphire development section. The second way will flash the G1 radio and you can flash any rom you could on the G1. There are some connection problems reported with the second method (mainly a bit slower edge speeds). I originally rooted my phone using this method and it is definitely still usable especially in 3g areas.
I recently bought a Roger's branded Dream off Ebay and rooted via the Haykuro method (which changes the radio). I am a Roger's customer who is coming from a BB Bold 9000 and I can tell you that 3g makes a small difference in cities.
First note is that a stock Roger's Dream has, frustrating at best, 3g connectivity when you are under three bars of service. IMO, EDGE in cities (I am in Toronto) provides what you need. ROMS correct the 3g discrepancy, however 3g is a power hungry beast on the Dream and EDGE has been doing me well.
Second note is that a newer Roger's Dream is a pain in the ass to root compared to our southern neighbours. I lucked out on my Ebay purchase and had a .0009 SPL. Cyanogen offers a method on their Wiki which allows you to keep the Roger's radio but it limits what you can flash as previously stated. The Haykuro method which changes the radio allows you to flash almost any ROM but I have yet to run anything stable.
Just a little food for thought, hope this helped
THIS IS A QUICK QUESTION:
can the rogers dream run all roms posted here? or are there limitations?
if yes, how?
only if you have the danger spl and the newest radio.
but if you are on the Rogers network you may experience connection issues with the new radio...
I would hold off, you don't want to brick your phone. Our rogers Dreams have a different radio EBI1. Most of the roms on here were from the EBI0 radios meaning it will not work. I'm assuming you have a stock phone right now so use this guide. I used this for my rogers Dream and its working great. Add the http for the link.
wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_Rogers_Dream_EBI1_to_CyanogenMod
if you flash the 2.x radio properly along with a proper recovery image, you SHOULDNT brick your phone. i had flashed the 2.x radio and was loading any/every rom you can think of, except i had a whole load of connectivity problems.
so i reverted back to the 3.x radio and have been fine ever since, just using cyans newest with ebi1 kernel.
would love to be able to get a superd rom on here with ebi1 kernel support
HM... ok.
I'm planning to use this on AT&T in the USA... has anyone had experience with this?
is the EBI0 radio acceptable for use with att?
because i'm using my g1 on att right now, and kinda want the 3g speeds. rogers dream does support those frequencies.

The only thing is that you may have slow edge speeds. If you get 3g most of the time that probably doesn't matter.
are slower EDGE speeds with the EBI0 radio confirmed?
See: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Talk:Full_Update_Guide_-_Rogers_Dream_EBI1_to_CyanogenMod
I don't know exactly why this is or if it happens for everyone.
FWIW, I just tried DSL reports speed test and got 115kbps on AT&T EDGE with the 26I radio on cyanogen. 3G was 992kbps and WIFI 2734kbps.
This compares to 91kbps/625kbps/3659kbps on my stock iphone 3G (3.1.2) tested immediately after the Rogers Dream with 26I on Cyanogen.
At least in terms of speed, I have to conclude that it's a non-issue, at least on AT&T. Time will tell with regards to network stability.
I noticed that there are a lot of random threads regarding the Samsung Captivate for Rogers (SGH-i896) and would like to make a common one that answers a few questions and asks a few.
I made a Wiki Page for the Rogers Captivate Model. You can add your FAQ and ROMs and what not there:
Samsung Rogers Captivate - SGH I896
I hope this becomes the main post for the Rogers Captivate where all questions would be answered so we won't have to look around. I will also add links and guides to rooting your Rogers version and hope that I get input from you guys as to which ROM is working and which is not.
Cheers.
Sure you can...change the model in the update-script from SGH-i897 to SGH-i896, done =]
I figured buying AT&T version, I'll have less hassle with flashing ROMs (using captivate with Fido). Bought one off craigslist and I'm very satisfied with it
I was thinking about that too but then if I buy the Rogers version then selling it within Canada becomes a lot easier too if you wanna upgrade. I know it would be a hassle to find custom ROMs but once we get used to editing ATT ROMs we should be good

Haha yes it does make it less of a hassle. But seeing how we can just enter Rogers/Fido APNs and have a full working 3G, I think it'll be alright. Selling my European magic is a lot harder because of no 3G..

Well people usually avoid it because you can't use your warranty in Canada and I do need that! This was the only reason deterring me from buying the ATT version else I would have had it a couple of months back instead of waiting it out at Rogers. Put up your magic on eBay

eBay is more of a hassle
Anyways back to the topic lol
I am having so much fun already with this phone from AT&T (I am w/ Fido).
I think the user base from US is much greater than Canada, especially we are pretty slow in getting anything (don't get me started ), so buying AT&T one gives us first hand on every dev goodies in XDA
The biggest question:
Does the Rogers Captivate have HSUPA enabled?
would love to try the stock rogers rom.. i'd like to see a more "samsung" rom rather than the amazingly bad ATT bloatware..
the stock roms have much longer batt life for me than the other roms here.

Rogers have HSUPA on the network, weather or not they are disabled like AT&T, only those who has the actual phone can tell.

Rogers has the capability but we don't if it is unlocked on the phone. Will know tomorrow once we have it..Here are the specs from the ROGERS website. (rogers (dot) com/captivate)
Connectivity:
HSPA Bands: UMTS 850/1900/2100 MHz
Network Speed (HSPA): Up to 7.2 Mbps*
Yall, know what this means.
UN RESTRICTED CAPTIVATE KERNAL FOR HSUPA MOBILE AP AND ALL. NO MORE FLASHING TO I9000
correct band froyo hsupa modems for all. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
AT&T branded with Rogers ROM
I currently have the AT&T Captivate but with the SGH-I896 Rogers official ROM on it and have been using this one for a month now. I love the device.
HSPA+ works 100%(check pics and you will see the H symbol instead of 3G)!! I love it but it does chew up alot more data. Doesn't matter for me as I have 6GB but for others that might be an issue. Barely any Rogers Bloatware at all.
SGH-I896 Pics
Pics of my AT&T branded SGH-I896 Rogers Samsung Captivate.
Dump the modem.bin we need it.
Hey Guys,
I just updated the main post with a link to the Wiki Page for this version of the device. Please try and add as much info as you can so that people won't have to look around.
Cheers

Mind sharing the ROM so the developers can work it?
I have a t-mobile galaxy tab that I am now using on Att, I installed the newest overcome rom, have been trying different modems but so far cannot seem to be able to get 3g to work. To clarify I am using att sim card in a att 3g area. Is there a specific modem to achieve this or some settings I need to set?
My t-mobile vibrant that is unlocked, works perfectly fine with the same att sim and I get 3g, can make calls and use data simultaneously.
Have you gone through your vpn settings?
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA Premium App
I have checked the APN settings and everything looks the same as what is set on my vibrant that is getting 3g.
I understand there ARE hardware differences between AT&T and T-Mo versions. As a result....only Edge on T-Mo network with AT&T tab....and only Edge on AT&T network with T-Mo tab.
I know...sux!
Oh, I was hoping that the hardware was just the same and the software was different on each carrier, like each one only enabled certain frequencies. Especially since the Vibrant is able to get 3g with At&t.
Big differences in the radios. They are compatible on each others voice frequencies, but they don't have the correct data frequencies.
what are your apn settings to make the att sim work and get data??
I flashed overcome v2.0.0 gold on my tmobile tab and flashed the jk3 modem for att... is that the modem I need to flash to work with at&t? I only get voice and 2G only. Someone said maybe I need to flash jpz modem? would that get 3g data on my tmobile tab with at&t sim?
I give up. What's the point of posting accurate information if people won't read it?

Standing right beside you Captain.
I feel sad Cap, the crush on galaxy tab made me buy a Tmo TAB and I am a ATT user. I just want to sell my current one and get a ATT to enable 3G data...damn...
I have two tabs: the t-mobile tab I first bought, and the at&t tab I bought after I learned.
I'm currently downloading the following GPE ROM and I notice it says that you can flash the radio but it is not required. Just wondering what this means exactly? Is it the drivers for the radio device in the headset that gives you your signal? Is it best practice to flash the radio or do most people leave it? What are the pros and cons etc? Is it dangerous to do?

Thanks
Radios control things like Cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS.
Each version has its unique radios.
The software that controls them would tell the device to get HSPDA+ on band x or LTE on band Y.. stuff like that.
For example. ME i have T-Mobile. I have a T-Mobile branded HTC One. For a while i ran my One fully stock GPe with the TMO radios. Why? Because when TMO sent out an update a while back (prior to 4.3) they updated their radios and i saw noticeable improvement on LTE for TMO..
SO naturally when i converted mine to GPe i wanted to keep my TMO radios. The GPe might not have the tweaks to its radios that TMO sent out and at the time the version on my GPe was older. So i put the newer TMO radio on it and i felt like it was working great.
Someone else chime in with pros and cons.
