I am noticing that there is still no way to search messages in the default email app. Also, still no way to move messages to a different folder. This is such a shame since the default app is so much faster than Touchdown. Has anyone used Moxier? Is it better than Touchdown?
How can we let Google know that we need search and ability to move messages with the default app?

hello everyone!
this may seem a bit strange but is there a way to remove the native gmail app from android 2.1 (nexus one)? since i use the native exchange email client, i am getting a lot of duplicate emails; really annoying!! i have root access. please help, thanks.
well its not what youre looking for but you can just apply a filter on gmail so it wont show up in your phones inbox. but i also dont think you can remove gmail :\
Or, unsync Gmail.
I would just like to keep it from starting up unless I start it. I dont use it but since there is no way that I have found to get the market to switch over to sending my reciept for paid apps to email accounts I actually use it has to remain accessible.
This is probably an android noob thing, but I cannot seem to understand how to use the "email" app and the "gmail" app.
I want to use the stock/default android email app, you know, the one with the black background? However, I am seriously annoyed by the fact that when I receive a single new email, I get two notifications in the notifications bar; One from the gmail app and one from the stock/default email app.
How do I use this? It's required to set up a gmail account for marketplace to work. But I hate replicate notifications.
Do I just delete one entirely from the app folder?
Whats the best way to work along/around this?
You can turn off the Gmail apps notifications by delving into it's settings.
Go to gmail app, hit menu, go to more, select settings, uncheck Email Notifications. Gmail app will no longer notify you.
but if you just turn off the notification it will still be syncing in the background so if you dont want to use the gmail app go into accounts & sync and under your mail address uncheck sync gmail
the gmail app is used for just that, gmail. the email app is used to connected to exchange servers, pop3 accounts, imap accounts, basically any email that isnt gmail.

you get two notifications because you have set up your gmail account on Email app. Gmail app is way better than Email app (my opinion)
Option1: Delete gmail account from Email app and just use the Gmail app.
Option2: Go to Gmail app settings and disable notifications and use Email app (it will still be synchronizing).
Option3: Uninstall Gmail app and use Email app.

Agreed!
If only I could make my ActiveSync account (work Exchange) to use the Gmail app for mail display instead of Email.apk's viewer.
Personally I think the Gmail app sucks ****. Its so annoying to see the Gmail notification (like push email) and then only go into Mail to actually read it after hitting refresh.
Real cockup in my opinion, but then again I don't hold android in the highest light anyway.
I personally like the gmail app. I never need to press refresh. My push works great. I see the notification or the green trackball (color I set for gmail) then pull down menu and select the notification for Gmail and it loads that message right up.

That's pretty much wrong if I understand you correctly. If I get a notification from the Gmail app of a new mail, I press it and it's right there in my inbox without having to refresh it first.
I also like the Gmail app better than the built-in e-mail app.
The Gmail Push?
I have nexus one, it normally syncs every hour (i set it so)..
Why dont I get the push option? (my operator supports push mail)
If you use Gmail app - the push is automatic and the only way. You don't configure the sync time, because it has no such option.
If you use Email app for Gmail - check if you can set it to Automatic(Push) option (it's the topmost option on the list).
If you set Gmail as Exchange, it can push. If it's set as IMAP then it has to be set to poll.
Ok did that, and and yeh, its push.
Its a lil slow though (it gets a lil delayed).. but Im glad it works..
Anyone using an app for their contacts that's better than the stock Captivate app?
My problem with the app is likely due to how I use it, but it's driving me crazy. I have 3 accounts syncing their contacts to it. 90% of each account is a dupe of the other accounts, but I need to have all 3 for that 10%. If I don't, then I have to pick one and constantly take the time to manually make sure it's up to date. Instead I think the spool should just work.
My problems are so far it only lets you combine 4 contacts. I *could* go through all 3 accounts and clean them up, but again, I think the app should be more flexible and let me combine as many as I want. Also, it doesn't let me choose a group of contacts within gmail. WHY does it think I need the contact info of EVERY person I've ever communicated with?! Let me just limit which groups within the account I want synced, especially to limit it to "my contacts" within gmail.
Anyone with similar frustrations find something better?
Thanks!

the one included in the Cognition ROM is pretty awesome. i just noticed it today (i don't use that app too often). it looks the same but you can swipe left to text a contact or swipe right to call. i found this very slick!

pocket informant would be great! hope it comes out soon...
I would try dialer one. It's free and an amazing app. I'm not sure it will do what you want but there are tons of options. My favorite is the swiping to go to contacts, favorites, and call log. I started using it because I wanted my favorites to come up first thing without a dial pad when I hit the phone. Hope it helps.
all the contact apps are half done as is e mail
How can you take Android seriously without a decent contacts manger or e mail client?
I have tried them all the contact apps and they are all difficult if not impossible to use. Some do not enable all the fields you need and on others the search is incorrect. None of them mesh with or incorporate the phone & text function well. Right now I'm working with the 2.2 contacts manager, 2.2 messaging and Touchdown. It takes all three to marginally achieve what I need. This is an opportunity for someone.
I just installed the CyanogenMod e mail to try and find a decent e mail client. It is not much better then the 2.2 e mail (it does include your message when you reply), Touchdown or any of the others. Touchdown would be good if it would handle multiple accounts of each and every variety. There is another opportunity here.

If you are syncing 3 contact sources and there are some dupes, then those are linked - you can see all 3 individually, but picking the contact source you want to view, or you can unlink those 10%.
As for groups, 2.2 appears to fix this, but for now, one solution is to export all your contacts to your SD card then import them all to your "phone". The phone address book allows you to create and manage groups.
Maybe the stock Android contact manager is better. I am holding out for 2.2 as what i have seen, looks like they fixed most issues involving groups and google groups.
Hi Guys,
Does anyone know if there is a way to set the folders where deleted and sent emails are stored in the default email app.
I am using it mainly for a gmail email account but don't like the gmail app (mainly because it can't send to groups).
I also use Thunderbird on a PC and laptop.
I have set up Thunderbird to use the default gmail folders/labels but the phone email app doesn't seem to have a setting to change the folders, at least not one I can find. So I end up with two sent items and two deleted items folders which is a bit of a pain to manage.
Is there a way to set/change these folders in the email app?
Or, if not, is there another email app that will allow me to set it up to integrate with gmail folders/labels properly and allows sending of emails to groups
not sure but try k9mail
Just got the note 3 a few days ago. Came from HTC One m7. I have not been able to disable the default email and use the gmail app. If I go to delete the email account in the default app it says it will delete all my contacts etc. How to get around this? Thanks.
If you're rooted try using titanium backup and freeze the default email app and see what happens. Worst case just unfreeze the app and you'll be back to where you started.
Thanks for the reply. I just removed the email account from the app. It did not seem to mess things up. My contacts did refresh, but all there. Why they don't just let you disable it and use gmail app?
Honestly for me my email never used that app. It went automatically into gmail app. I had to setup my other email through the app though since it was a @Live.com email I wanted to use as well.
