Just saw on Engadget how Samsung accomplished the goal that Google failed at: Getting its Galaxy phone line on all 4 carriers
Why again didnt Google just play nice and be flexible to the carriers demands?
Why not allow Verizon and Sprint to have a little control over their versions of the N1 in order to ensure the N1 becomes a national success?
If Samsung can accomplish this, why couldnt Google?
Seems like such a waste of a perfect opportunity

Because the entire point of the Nexus One was to prove that customers wanted a phone that was not bound by "carrier demands" thats why all the Droids have the pay for tethering, while the Nexus One supports it freely.
Why not just be flexible?
Let the T-Mobile and Att versions be completely free of carrier control and be flexible with the Verizon/Sprint versions. I'd much rather have a non-tethering N1 on Sprint and Verizon as options than nothing at all...
If Samsung could do it, why not Google?
Because each version of the Galaxy is a totally different version, because this carrier didnt like this option on the phone, they took it out and renamed the phone. There are 4 versions of this phone each one less of a total package then the one before it. The Nexus One didn't want to be "flexible" it wanted to be allowed at the party as it designed to be. Plus the Nexus One was originally planned to be on Sprint and Version, it was the carriers who then dropped support for it. Also i was just throwing tehtering out there as an example there are many other things that the Nexus One can do that other phones have had stripped because of carrier control.
Those phones are gonna be hindered by carrier approval for updates.
The main thing that will be gimped is the native tethering option of android.
Samsung is in the game for $$$ with a guaranteed business plan.
Google was attempting to change the typical business plan. It was always an gamble.

Verizon publicly came out and said they wanted the nexus but it was Google that did not come thru for unknown reasons. Who are we to believe, I agree I don't trust any of them. But its definitely weird that Verizon went on record saying that. Why would they lie? And the next question is if that was the truth, why would Google have backed out?

Thats true, no one really knows who was at fault. Google isnt know for their Dev phones coming to CDMA. Its also possible that Google turned it down when the CDMA carriers refused to offer the Nexus One full freedom.

Most of the normal customers will have no idea the phones are related directly. They are all a little different and have different names. Each carrier has say with software unlike the n1. That means no tethering etc. I dont see why US carries like to cripple phones and brand them... I get that they want their own image or to not look like just a network provider but customized phones blow... My htc pure has no front facing cam and all the td2s tp2s needed different skins/cases and that also means more expensive repairs and ****. Carriers around the world just stamp their logo and inject some crapware (sometimes) and leave everything else the same!

Maybe someone will figure how to make a vanilla android rom for it.
I think the problem with the N1 is that the only carrier that subsidized it is T-Mobile. The two largest carriers are At&t and Verizon. Verizon doesn't carry it. For At&t, how many ppl are gonna shell out $529 for a phone, when you can get an iphone for like $199. All of us in this forum would, but for others it's too big of a difference.
well especially these days with this economy, $530 is a lot to swallow.
When did "US Cellular" become one of "the 4" carriers??? They're #7 according to here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mobile_network_operators_of_the_Americas#United_States
Verizon got the HTC Desire
Sprint got the HTC EVO
If they got those phones, why would they want the N1 for? Those HTC phones are, in the carrier's eyes, better than the N1 and they aren't restricted to the plans that Google made T-Mobile customers switch over to in order to get the N1 for a lower price.
If those two phones came to Tmobile, I wouldn't have a N1 to be honest.

Quite ironically that's only true in western developed countries. And the major reason is that people are just too dependent on the whole contract and credit system. In India, we always pay for unlocked phone. There are no contracts. Therefore if we buy a smartphone we know what we are buying and how much that is worth. And in return we get cheap phone service (2 cents per minute). US carriers will give you "free" cheap phone and then charge you $45 for 450 minutes. That is $36 extra per month or $864 extra for the two year contract period.
$530 for a phone seems to be a reasonable price for us... even if we are still a developing country.
This is just the announcement right? In mid March 2010, Sprint and Verizon announced they were getting the N1, until they changed their mind. Like you guys said earlier something about the "Evo" and the "Moto shadow". Shadow is pretty sweet, 4.3 inch display plus QWERTY!

$530 is too much? ok buy a g1 for 279. or a flip phone for 35 at a pawn shop. remember, this is something you OWN, not something that you lease with heavily financed contracts and etc s to mess with.
a potato chip is rediculously expensive if you compare it to the price of potatoes. cmon, find a logical argument folks or would you rather a company NOT profit, fail and leave you with no. support?

I think you missed his point a bit.
Google was attempting to do a few things with the N1. First, they wanted to offer a completely raw phone, free of all carrier branding and bloatware and crippling. To do so meant selling it themselves, or in stores like Best Buy or whatever. This would push the second item: showing those in the states how a lot of other countries operate, buying unlocked phones without a carrier subsidy and contract. I love this idea. Both ideas.
However, the timing was rather unfortunate. $530 in this economy is rough for a lot of people. Doesn't mean the idea is horrible, doesn't mean anyone is blaming Google. It simply means that there are a lot of people that won't buy the N1 (or any brand new completely unlocked phone) right now because of the economy. I personally have several friends that love my N1. They wish they could buy one but are either unemployed or under-employed (took jobs making much less than they're used to, simply to get a check coming in).
I love Google's approach on this. I think it's great that they (supposedly) told Verizon and Sprint go suck an egg, and that the N1 was not to be messed with. This is my first truly unlocked, unbranded phone and I don't think I'll ever go back to buying them from the carrier.
Plain and simple most carriers were not thrilled with the idea of a totally unbranded/un-carrier approved handset being activated on their network.
With the GSM variant, there is little that any carrier can do, but CDMA is a different animal and I am really not surprised that VZW/SPRINT said heck no.

Same as in the UK, I have a cheap sim-only with unlimited data and just buy phones unlocked sim-free (no carrier restrictions) from the hundreds of stores (Play, Amazon etc). The money I save over the normal 18 months is enough to buy a Nexus One and have money left over.
But still some people in UK see the 'free phone' and sign up to a stupid long-term contract.
Hi,
I am looking to trade my T-mobile Nexus One for one which works on ATnT frequencies. I will be arriving in the US in 15 days, and will be residing in Troy, New York (zip 12180).
The bootloader has been unlocked, but otherwise there is no modification/damage whatsoever. The phone is around 20 days old. I've been using a screen protector on it from day 0, so no scratches at all.
Would anyone be interested in a switch?
Note: I am looking for a switch only, please; not interested in selling. I'd prefer that the switch happens in-person. I'll post photos of the phone if anyone is interested, but really, it's brand new, no damage at all
Cheers.

Alternatively, if someone from India has that ATnT Nexus One and is willing to exchange in the next few days, that works out perfectly for me too. Note that in India, 3G will work on either ATT or T-Mobile Nexus One.
Just FYI, if you come to the states and don't have any credit history or SSN for the US, AT&T is going to charge you a HUGE "deposit" in order to open an account.
Whereas, T-Mobile will offer you a Contract Free plan without deposits, but no discounts on phones. This won't be an issue as you already have an N1.
You can get an Unlimited Everything plan (Minutes, Text and Data) for $79.99/mo.

I would very much want to go for T-mobile. But the problem is, most students in my area will be using ATT. Then if I have tmo, no one will call me, or vice-versa
Also, ATT has some sort of agreement with my university (RPI) where they don't charge a steep deposit for students without SSN.
I did a lot of research, and found that tmo is perfect for me, but due to, let's say, "peer pressure", I'll have to go for ATT
just so you know, ATT does not have no contract plans like Tmo does, you will be stuck in a contract if you go the ATT route, unless ATT has changed their tactics recently.
I would definitely want to avoid ATnT, fervently. But, unlike here in India, in USA even incoming calls are charged, so if most people around me are on ATT, I will have to use that, right?
also, isnt there a student (college) discount for tmobile? Im pretty sure there is.

That's not the real issue.. The problem is the majority. Is there any way to get around it?
Also, my cousin who is already staying there will add me to a family plan of ATT, which will bring down my cost a bit.
Actually, I don't really need 3G at all.. But problem is, ATT will force it on to me
What is the reasoning behind wanting to change to ATT in the first place?

I'm currently in India, I will be coming to the US in 15 days. Because most of my seniors and students around my area are on ATnT, won't I have to use ATT? Otherwise no one would be able to call me without both of us incurring charge, except for nights and weekends.
Well if you are on tmo and call someone on att then you will be wasting minutes, but thats normal. My advise if you are still unsure what to do is use tmobile for a month(off contract) then if you needs are not set, either by using all your minutes or what have you, then trade your nexus one in for an att version. Why make a long term 2 year contract without testing the non contract option first.
Thank you Blueman101, nice idea By "off-contract", are you suggesting I go for prepaid? Or "Even More Plus" with Flexpay?

Before you do so, consider this in your decision.
- T-Mobile has unlimited data plan and free tethering atm while Att doesn't.
- T-Mobile has cheaper plans that att. Although ATT to T-Mobile phone calls aren't free, there is a certain amount of minutes in your plan you can use during peak hours or calling other phones from another carrier. I don't think you'll go over 500-700 minutes chit chatting with your pals that's what text msgs are for.
- T-Mobile HSDPA (if theres coverage) so depending on your location is faster than att 3G.

Thank you. As a student, I don't think I'll be able to afford data/3G on my phone at all, and neither do I really need it. My only intention in switching to ATnT Nexus One is that if ATnT forces a data plan onto me, I'll be able to utilise it. But if there was a way to avoid a data plan altogether, I'd much rather prefer that!
Hmm yes you do have a point that 500 minutes won't be depleted, and I can talk during the off-peak hours. I think I need to re-evaluate my decision. Sigh, this is confusing!

Reading this thread, I think your best bet is:
1. If you cannot find someone to trade before you get here, fly in here, post on Craig's List LOCALLY and trade face to face, it will be faster and no costs to do so.
2. Since you are going to be added to a family plan, then your costs will be MUCH lower and since you are not getting a subsidized phone, they really can't force a data plan on you either way.
3. IF you decide on T-Mobile, see if your friends have the A-List option on their plans. If they do, they add your number and poof, no minutes to call anytime.
Regardless of what you decide, you really don't have to rush to trade your phone before you get here. It will work on AT&T or T-Mobile and it will be faster and easier to swap once you get here. Just keep it in good condition and make sure the one you get works.
Oh yah I remember... If you have the T-Mobile version of the nexus one then it will also work with att. You just can't have 3g on it, which you do not need in the first place. So you really don't need to trade after all.

As I said, I really don't want to swap (especially because this N1 has some sentimental value attached to it, too). My only reason behind doing is that ATT will force a data plan on me, and then I will be paying for a facility which I can't use anyway. However, I am relieved to hear that they can't force a data plan if I don't have a subsidized phone. Do I specifically need to request this, or spend hours with a customer support tech fighting over it?

I don't think I can afford an unlimited plan on Tmo either. And anyway people on ATT will still be charged, so others will be reluctant to call me/accept my calls. The concept of an A-list looks pretty good, though.
So, in the end it all boils down to whether (and how) I can avoid the unnecessary data plan they might add to my line in the family plan
Ok, I've got a decision to make. I'm currently under a TMO loyalty family plan but the family member has recently decided to stop paying for the account. I have the option....
A: to do an acceptance of responsible and take over my single account allowing me to keep my number along with the phones contract.
B: I could open my own TMO account, no contract, which means I get a new number. The payment for that bill would be about $92 a month including taxes.
C: I could also open a TMO account, on contract, and get myself something new like a tab. (I have 14 days to get something) I'll just use the G2 instead of the tab. With a monthly bill a little over $100
D: My last option is leave TMO and get a sprint account with the same family member that is dropping TMO and join their family plan which is only $37 a month.
What would you do?
You could always open a new account and keep your same number, trust me, it's very possible.

Damn, I did it a different way (Keep my old number) so you're probably right. I just started a new contact and asked if I could keep my number. You could always raise hell, I've seen people get free **** that way haha but then again you also take the risk of getting tazed and dragged out by the police or security.

You can keep your number if you pay for the bill a month after the 2 yr contact ends,
I work at a AT&T store and this is what we tell customers who want to port over to use but are still in a contact with another carrier and do not want to pay the early termination fess.
You would be doing is paying for a month after the 2 yr contact ended so the number is still yours, and you can port it over without a early termination fee.
In the long run, its always best to have your own account. Just saves trouble with other account holders. Just my personall experience.

As long as the downsides of being on a CDMA network instead of a GSM one aren't an issue for you (as they aren't for me, basically) then I'd say Sprint is fairly decent.
Of course, there is a $10/mo charge to anyone for having data on their plan. It's the same $10/extra you pay if you get a 4G phone. But, of course, as you and everyone else on here probably know, Sprint's 4G service coverage pretty much sucks right now.
Sprint's cheaper than Verizon, and really only TMo is cheaper than Sprint (though that's a relative statement because it depends on what you've got and all that jazz). Vis a vis phone numbers, if I were you I'd get someone to invite you to Google Voice and then switch everyone over to that number, then you really don't have to care in the future what your *actual* voice number is.
U can convert ur line to a prepaid plan.... 50/month ftw! !! Source.... ME ;D

Dude im in the same situation as you. I'm on a family plan also with a family member who decided to download over $200 worth of paid apps on his samsung vibrant. And decided he wasn't paying so our phones got shut off and he switched over to Verizon and got the same type of phone Samsung Fascinate...And since i lost my job i had to pretty much sell some of my stuff to come up with the money for our cell phone bills. But now that i got it all paid down. I got a offered that idk if i should take. My best friend is on Sprint on a family plan and for only $50/month Ill have 1500 minutes unlimited text, internet with the HTC Evo. but idk if its worth it to switch.
So Verizon will no longer offer unlimited data plans to customers, but you can keep yours. When getting a new phone however you must purchase it in full. THat means around 500dollars per phone usually.
Motorola is also releasing updates now to their unlocked devices and locking them.
**** Verizon and Motorola.
My next phone will be a HTC or Samsung on (insert network name here that offers best data plan). i wont be bullied anymore. This is beyond ridiculous.
Just buy phones locally then. Plus, off contract phones are better then being locked down.

how is the coverage with straighttalk though? the plans seem to much of a great deal to not have some drawback somewhere. otherwise why are they not leading the market lol

So Verizon will no longer offer unlimited data plans to customers, but you can keep yours. When getting a new phone however you must purchase it in full. THat means around 500dollars per phone usually.

I think you have a couple of misconceptions going on there. You are confusing the brand of phone and the carrier. It's verizon billing you for data. Motorola has nothing to do with that. Buy an HTC or Samsung phone on Verizon and the price for data is the same as if you bought a Motorola phone. Buy a Motorola phone on a different carrier and the price for data on that phone will be the same as any other phone on that carrier.
Also how do you figure $500 per phone? Currently I'm one of the people grandfathered in on an unlimited data plan. That's $30 per month for unlimited data. So over the course of a 24 month contract, I'll actually pay $720 for data. People who are not grandfathered are still paying the same $720 over 24 months but are only getting 2 GB per month. Since 2 GB is plenty for me, it doesn't much matter.
The only difference with the new plans coming out this summer is that data is charged per account rather than per phone. If you add a tablet for example, you don't necessarily have to pay for any more data if both devices together stay within the cap. The thing is everyone is panicking and complaining before we even know what the caps will be and what the price will be for each tier.
For example if it were still $30 for two gigabytes I could actually save $30 per month. currently my wife has her $30 and I have my $30 for a total of $60 between us. But we each on our own have never exceeded 900 MB so we could switch to a pool of 2 GB total to share between us and end up paying half as much total. but we need to know the facts and figures to make those comparisons...
And right now, everyone complaining doesn't have any more idea than I do.
I'm just done with Verizon. I'm going with prepaid now. :|
Lol ratman you read my post wrong. Ill explain
Motorola sent a update locking an unlocked phone. Im assuming the trend dwill continue as they havent started unlocking phones they said they would. But instead doing the opposite and locking unlocked phones..
Seperately, verizon is getting rid of unlimited or 2gb data plan. You can keep it if you already have it but if you want to get a new phone (using it for your unlimited) you must buy it completely. Meaning around 500 dollars. Thats how much phones actually cost if you dont buy with a plan.
I believe you still can upgrade for free however on your plan

Straight talk has good coverage there is one drawback after you go over 2 gb of net they slow your speed down but its still fast as hell even when they do my bro has it and uses it for the net with his laptop with his droid 3 and same speed as me if not faster and so its a good deal but to get good phones like the razer droid 3 and iphone you have to buy them out right and also somthing cool you can have any att phone and you do not have to get it unlocked they have a sim that works with it!

I currently use straight talk service with my droid 3 and it is awesome. With the droid 3 you get the option to get an att or a tmobile based sim card and you get all their normal coverage.
Looks like straight talk just earned a new customer :] well once i get my job lmao
When the time comes, I'll probably pay full price for my next phone. I just won't purchase it from Verizon. I'll buy something that'll work on their network, but without the stupid locked bootloader or bloatware.
Picked up a Rogers Moto X on the weekend, unlocked the boot loader, now what is the easiest way to carrier unlock as well?
No way i'm ever going to actually use Rogers as a provider.
Thank yah.
Use a third party company who'll sell you an unlock code.
I have unlocked 2x Rogers Moto X via cellunlocker [.net] for use on Bell
It's like $8 and turnaround was 3 hours for the first and like 6 hours for the second (albeit I did both on the weekend)
Correct me if I am wrong but if you buy a phone outright isn't the carrier suppose to unlock the phone for you too?

There's a fee, different depending on which carrier you're talking about.

This! I used cellunlocker[.net] over the weekend to unlock my X. Cost $8 and took 15 minutes.
Are Rodgers selling them sim free?

Nop. For Rogers you have two options:
1. Buy just the phone for $599+tax and unlock it yourself (you lose your warranty as per Rogers). Not all stores will allow you to purchase it like this though. If they let you buy just the phone they only make $50, where as if they get you on a plan they make $200. I bought mine at Shops at Don Mills (Don Mills and Lawrence) in Toronto. They should still have stock.
2. Buy the phone for $549.99 and go on a month to month plan for 90 days (3 months). ONLY after that you can PAY Rogers $50 to unlock it. The first option was cheaper for me as I'm with Bell Mobility. You still lose warranty if Rogers unlocks it, as per Rogers.
3. Sign a contract. I don't do contracts. I like being off the leash nom sayin'?
I know this doesn't coincide with the new CRTC rules but Rogers hires lawyers to find basically everything they can get away with. The CRTC rules technically don't start till December 2nd.

Option #1 listed is probably the best option if you're not with Robbers, or do not want to sign a 2-yr contract with Robbers.

LOL Robbers, sounds about right. I wasn't impressed by their plans at all. I was gonna switch to Rogers cause their support and LTE speeds are slightly better, but their plans just flat out SUCK right now. I'm paying $74 after tax on Bell for a fat plan (6GB data, unlimited this and that, caller ID etc) and an equivalent plan on Rogers would cost me $105 + tax
I was like naw I'm good just sell me the phone lol
I'm hoping Verizon is determined to dominate Rogers by offering much better deals. Trust me, the coming competition between Verizon and Canadian carriers is great news for the consumer. Everyone's gonna price cut each other and we will laugh all the way to the bank =P

That'd be great in theory. But corporations exist to make money. While I do sincerely hope Verizon will bring competition; I also doubt they'll shake down the market. Why make less if you can rob people in broad day light?

Because with Verizon being a new player, they will have to undercut Rogers(Fido) and Bell(Virgin) to make sales. They have to offer a better value proposition to get people who are loyal to existing Canadian Carriers to switch over.
I know I wouldn't switch my carrier unless I got a better deal or better speeds/service.
But you could be right because Verizon can outbid all Canadian Carriers combined in the upcoming frequency band auction so they could just have same prices as everyone else and just brag about having the fastest speeds. Kind of like what Rogers is doing right now. Just to give you a number, Verizon has 100 million customers, Rogers has 10 million. They have deep pockets mang.

That's because they've moved to 2-year plans and jacked up the monthly cost to ensure they make up the subsidy within the contract term. Take a look at Bell's current plans and you'll see something similar. In comparsion, your current plan is probably based on a 3-year contract.
You can thank the CRTC for how this turned out.
+1 on cellunlocker[.net]

Another +1 for CellUnlocker. They came through for me overnight. They're the cheapest I've seen of any other unlock service (Unlockcode247, UnlockUnit).
Rogers unlock
Rogers says if you buy outright they will unlock for free as per CRTC rules starting in Dec. Rogers say they will honor the rules now on outright phone purchases. That being said the 8 bucks I paid to cellunlocker.net was well worth it, got the code in less then an hour and didn't have to deal with anyone from Rogers. The Moto x will work on fido out of the box as thats my carrier I just unlocked mine to use in the USA.

I think I read VZW pulled out for the time being of trying to buy a Canadian carrier.
Does anyone know of a reliable place to unlock the AT&T version?
