TouchScreen doesn't react, need a backup - Touch Diamond2, Pure Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
since friday my mobiles touchscreen doesn't react anymore. Don't know why, but it worked totally fine and when I took it to write a message, nothing happened. As you can imagine the phone isn't worth a penny without it's touchscreen, so I took an old one, put in my sim and am now using that one.
Here comes my problem, of course all my contacts are saved in my phone and there are several mms and so on, which I'd like to save to my pc.
Is there any change of getting them out there? I don't know, something like a remote control for my device? To use it from my pc or something like that? I'm open to any ideas.
Thanks a lot
Alex
edit: The leftovers of my device still work perfectly! It turns around the screen, when putting it on the side, opens the Windows Start Windows, when pushing the button etc.

My Mobiler (free) or Pocket Controller (pay) allow you to control the device from your PC.
You can use M$ MyPhone to backup your SMS, etc.
I suggest doing a hard reset to try to get your screen back to verify its a hardware issue.

Okay, thanks for your fast answer. Loaded the programm, but it requires to start my mobile in active sync mode. But that's nearly impossible to me, cause everytime i plug in the usb cable, it asks me, to start as active sync, disk drive or internet sharing. For bad luck the default is disk drive and I can't change it to active sync. Any ideas?
Thanks

Yes, that's a hard place to get out of.
I was just helping another user with this same issue.
First, please confirm you've performed a hard reset.
The only other thing to attempt is to load your stock ROM onto the root of your storage card and try to reflash that way.

Lucky for me, I finally had the great idea of taking out my storage card and then the disk drive option isn't given anymore. Thanks for helping such a dork like me out!!!

Ofcourse! That was a great idea.
It certainly makes sense but I never thought of it.
That's good to know for future reference. Thanks!

Mine did this once to me after I put in a new game. I removed the stylus pen which caused the screen to light up long enough to use the touch features. I was working on a doc file and REALLY needed to save it.. a soft reset and haven't had the issue since. Figured it was just a fluke so never mentioned it before now.

Near Brick - Touchscreen Unresponsize

I think my phone is on its last leg. The screen has just recently become unresponsive. However, the hardware buttons (minus power) and the keyboard all still function.
I would try a reinstall of a new ROM to see if it is a hardware or software issue, but here is my dilemma. I am unable to connect to ActiveSync, so I am unable to get any contacts synced with my desktop and there were several new contacts from my last sync that I don't want to lose.
So, does anyone know of a trick to get the information (PIM is all I care about) off of the device even though ActiveSync isn't working? There is the PIMBackup (v1.9) program that I already had installed, but unfortunately it *requires* taps to activate. D-Pad and/or keyboard navigation does not work, so I can't backup to an SD card.
FYI, I'm using Helmi_BA_WM2k5_AKU3.5_v1.4.CF2 ROM if that helps.
Any help is greatly appreciated as I cannot make outgoing calls until this is resolved.
I'll try a ROM reflash as a last resort, but I would really like to be able to backup first. I'm even willing to mess around with hardware if people could walk me through it.
why can't you use activesync?
It says it cannot recognize the device. This is a somewhat recent happening, but not direclty related to this failure as that stopped working last week. I made the backup last week and never got around to investigating further.
Unless someone has a really great idea worth waiting for, I'm going to open it up when I get home (no tools small enough at work) and make sure that all of the connections are good. If that doesn't solve it, then I'm going to try reflashing a new ROM. If that doesn't work, then I've got insurance on the device (through Sate Farm) and I'll have to see what my options for repair/replacement are.
Hope it doesn't come down to it, but does anyone have any experience with phone insurance?
Would this work?
I just came across this thread/utility which will dump the entire ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=238945
If I were to dump the rom, could someone with a "working" device upload it and then extract the PIM data (using PimBackup, whatever)? If so, I would be very grateful, heck I might even send some $$$ via PayPal.
Are there any other solutions?
Ok, I just got through disassembling the device and making sure that all of the connections were tight. Still, the touchscreen is unresponsive.
I've got ROM dumps, so if someone would be so kind as to flash those ROMs and extract the PIM data, I would be very appreciative. I don't want to just post the links for everyone to be able to download (since it does contain all of my information). If you would be willing to do this, then I'll give $20 via PayPal or another payment method. Either post here or PM me if you are interested.
Thanks,
Jonathon
have you tryed backup solutions like sprite backup or spb backup ?
I have not. I'm assuming that I would have to use the 2577 trick to install the program. Do you know if you can operate those programs without a touchscreen?
Someone tell me if I am wrong but only copying the file \pim.vol should be sufficient for backing up all PIM data. You can do this with Resco explorer, it can be controlled only with keys I think.

It is getting increasingly temperamental. Do you know if you can extract that from the ROM dump files? If so, can someone at least point me in the right direction as that would be much appreciated.

Have you checked your USB cable, or tried to sync via blue tooth?
I had a similar issue. Every time I'd plug the phone into any computer, it would say that there was an error with the device and would not do anything with it.
It turned out that I had a broken wire in my cable. I replaced that cable with a working one (sacrificed a very old smart media card reader), and I was able to sync it.
From there, it was easy to pull the digitizer settings into a file (found a free program that was designed for people who have vision problems), flash the phone and reset the old settings as my touch screen is cracked and a manual alignment will not work any longer.
Plus, there are 'remote control' programs out there for WM that let you use it, even with a dead touchscreen.
No, I haven't checked the cable but I'll see what i can do. I don't currently have a computer that I can sync with Bluetooth, but I'll see if I can't get that working as well. I've already got 'remote control' programs installed, so if I do manage to get ActiveSync running, then I'll be golden. Thanks for the input.
Does nobody know if you can extract the pim.vol file from the ROM dump?
Just Sharing :
My friend have similar problem. Both of us use BA. Our Solution was :
- My friend have a PIM backup using SPB Backup (exe files)
- I ran the exe file in my BA to get the PIM
- Sync it to my PC and save the PIM with MS Outlook (pst file)
- My friend can open this pst file on his PC
I got it!!!
Here is what I did. Note, you can remap the softkeys to hardware buttons, so at least a few more commands are available.
First, I installed Pim Backup
http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/en/index.php?soft=1806
Then I installed Resco File Explorer. I was able to put the Pim Backup executable on the storage card and run it without using the touchscreen. I stored the backup on the SD card, then just ran restore on a different device.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
Good to hear that you were able to backup, but were you able to do something about the unresponsive touchscreen?
Concerning the touchscreen, I am wondering if it isn't a software issue. It comes and goes, but interestingly enough there are certain things that seem to trigger it more than others. For instance, directly touching the Today screen will almost always lock it up and then nothing responds. However, other applications seem to work fine for brief periods of time.
I have just been swamped and a little hestitant to try reflashing to a new ROM. However, you can still navigate most applications (especialy basic ones) by just mapping the softkeys to hardware buttons and using the d-pad and keyboard.
Has anyone else had a similar problem in that the software was locking up the touchscreen? The only reason (other than being busy) is that if it is hardware then I won't be able to even get past the setup portion. I can't connect via ActiveSync (again making me think it is a software issue), so some types of backups are just not feasible. Oh yeah, I did try a different sync cable and it didn't work as well.

Loosing access to 4GB Flash when connecting as USB disk

Hello there
As this is my first post here, allow me to thank you all for a great forum, with loads of help and interesting applications. You've certanly made my life better
I've searched for this but had no luck in finding anything similar, so please excuse me if there is an old thread outthere, and help me find it.
My problem is that I've primarily used Active sync to connect to my PC and have transferred much music, programs and other stuff through this channel.
Now I have become interested in using my Diamond as a usb pen drive for my car radio etc. and also want to use it to move files from place to place.
I change the usb connection type to Disk Drive, and connect the wire to the PC, and let it install drivers so that I can access the disk drive it detects.
But then I loose access to the 4 GB memory, and can only access the internal memory of the device. Neither from the phone itself, or from the PC.
I know it have worked previously, because I have tried it some time ago. But now it seems like it's broken down.
When I look at fileexplorer on the phone, the name of the folder just disappears as soon as the cable is attached!
What is wrong, and how do I fix it?
Needless to say the phone freaks out after this, since all my applications are installed on the extended memory, so nothing works anymore, but a soft reset and it's all back to normal. Untill I try the connection again :-/
As mentioned, there is no problem with Active sync connections.
I really hope you can help me with this, because it would make the phone even more useful to me.
That being said I DO love the phone, it really has the ability to do almost anything I'd like it to. Incredible!
Thank you in advance for your help, and for at great source of knowledge.
Best regards
Thomas Hansen
It's normal, the phones switchs the memory readable directly from PC, as a pen drive to gain more speed.
If u are using the USB Disk function, u can't read the memory in the phone, bcuz u don't have "inserted" into it...
Bye!

Thank you for you answer, but I probably wasn't clear enough about the problem:
The 4 GB flash memory is inaccessable from both PC and phone after I plug in the usb cable (it disappears), but I CAN access the "system memory" (where windows is installed) from both ends.
So no, I dont think that is what I am experiencing. I hope this made it more clear.
How do I fix my problem?
Thank you for your help though.
Best regards
Thomas Hansen
sounds like the 1st free drive letter on your system is reserved for a network path.
try to disconnect the network drive or map the USB Drive manually.
regards
Draque
ps: Try it on a complete different system if this doesnt work.
I had tried it on 4 different PCs, all running XP.
Have no network drives on this one.
But, I'm confused now...
Because now it works correctly...
It opens the correct folder, for the 4 GB storage card...
And the phone doesnt crash afterwards...
I suspect an "Insufficient User IQ" kind of error... I just don't know what I did wrong?
If I learn more about this wierd issue I will post it here, and if you have any info, please post it, because I dont know what went wrong...
But right now my problem is solved! Hope it stays like this!
Well, Thank you for your advise everybody.
Best regards

O2 XDA Stellar: Booting problem following Windows Live install

Hi guys, need your help.
Short version:
i own the XDA Stellar, running vanilla WM6.0. tried to install Windows Live but had to soft reset before it ended. now stuck at the green boot screen.
what besides hard reseting can i do? i don't mind breaking the device if i have to, but i want my data back. particularly my text messages. everything else that i need is backed up.
while am on the green boot screen, if i receive an sms, the phone actually rings. but thats basically all it does. when i connect the USB to my computer, nothing pops up.
anyway i can get access to the files directory?
what i've tried:
- soft reseting a number of times
- remove SD card
- removing sim card
- removing Battery for a couple of minutes before putting it back in
- connecting USB cable. "nothing pops-up on computer"
- SMSing it. "it rings"
- pressing all buttons on surface of device.
no success
thanks for any help
Long version:
i own the XDA Stellar, running vanilla 6.0. today i downloaded Windows Live for windows mobile to update the one i already had on my device. while it was installing before it reached the end, i got a pop-up telling me that i was running out of space. and it just stayed like that, progress bar wouldn't move. so i went to the device deleted a couple of pictures and tried to cut/paste the voice notes from device to storage card. it refused to allow it. so i decided to soft reset.
when i did soft reset, it got to the green boot screen and is stuck there.
after along wait, i get a white screen telling me the device can't boot because i might have "turned off the device incorrectly" or installed an insecure software and that my only option is to hard reset and lose everything.
while am on the green boot screen, if i receive an sms, the phone actually rings. but thats basically all it does. when i connect the USB to my computer, nothing pops up.
anyway i can get access to the files directory?
Thanks
And no mention of a Hard-Reset?
are you saying that there is absolutely no way to read the memory on the phone beside doing it when the WinMobile OS is running right?
that sounds like a completely stupid design. its like having windows without a start disk that gives you access to a command prompt.
having to lose all your data over some OS data corruption is ridiculous
i would really appreciate it if anyone knows a way, even an expensive one.
i just had text messages from someone dear to me that passed away that i'd rather not lose.
thank you
Some other things to try
Yes you can check whether the sms messages are stored on the sim card (by putting it in another phone/using a sim card reader). On my TyTN II, the SMS Messages are stored there and it's only emails that use phone or memory card memory. You could also try removing the Sim before booting (one thing not on your 'tried' list but if all this fails, the only other thing I can think of short of a hard reset, is contacting Microsoft about their Windows Live software. There's a website for support of these products and Microsoft staff will actually get back to you (I had need to contact them over a bug in the email portion of their software some time ago). Best wishes
seeing as i have over 2000+ messages in there, i don't think the sim card could actually help me in this case.
but thanks anyway
i still can't believe they made a phone with a memory that could only be accessed through the OS

Including any additional way of accessing it uses up more storage memory for the relevant program and on a mobile device (unlike a desktop PC), that's very valuable space. Maybe some of your sms messages (the most important ones) may be on the sim - you have little to loose by checking. What about trying to boot it without the sim card in or contacting Microsoft as I mentioned? Not all your options have run out yet but you seem to write as if they are....

@Flying Kiwi
thanks for replying. i actually did try to boot it without the sim card after you suggested it. it didn't work.
and with regards to contacting Microsoft, i'll give that a go but i doubt they'll be able to help if people here can't. as we all know, XDA Developers kick ass.
with regards to checking the sim for the messages, i don't have a spare phone to try it on just now, and if i remember correctly, sim cards don't usually hold more then 15 text, though i might be wrong.
the thing is, the fact that my phone still rings when it receives a messages, kinda makes me think the OS is partially loading. i was hoping someone could suggest a way for me to force enough of it on to reach my files..
am starting to lose hope.. *sigh*
am really thankful to the people who have replied so far.
P.S. oh yeah, Flying Kiwi, could you give me a link to the WM6 support page that where people actually reply to you since i can't find any support besides that to MSDN account holders, either that or paying £200 for one single phone call that last upto 8 hours at which point it could just end up with them just telling me to hard reset. thanks
can anyone help me out here? anyone with a link or an email address i can get support from Microsoft for WM6?
i have a similar problem, is there anyway to get data from phone if the OS is corrupt and the system is stuck at the green bootup screen?
please say yes.

Looking for advice/suggestions (Please)

I recently purchased a wizard/mda (tmobile) and have run into major problems trying to unlock and upgrade the device.
This forum is a wealth of information, but I have hit some major problems.
The main problem is being unable to unlock it.I researched various posts around here, and have not been able to get activesync working.I looked at various troubleshooting info from microsoft and around here as well and have not been able to sync the phone with my computer.
I thought that perhaps it may have something to do with the version of xp I have installed, after spending many hours (25+) trying to get it to work.I then tried on another couple of comps and still no luck.
I am beginning to suspect that the phone itself has a technical problem.I seen the workaround for transferring cab files between the comp and the phone, and am hoping that once I have a mini sd card there is some way to upgrade wm5 on the phone. Can I unlock the phone without syncing it, using a different technique?(perhaps bluetooth or ir?)
Looks like I will have to unlock the phone using an unlock code, without syncing to the computer, but I am looking for any and all suggestions that may help out. I even tried attaching files and emailing them to myself, but wm5 doesn't support attachments.
Throw a dog a bone, before he buries this phone!

Im not an expert into this - all I can give you is couple of general ideas - maybe something you already knew but I'll give it a try
IMHO flashing via BT or IR can't be done or could be very risky.
Did you try hard reset? No change? Did you try hard reset and then skip installing those cabs that are installed automatically after HR?
You could try to download software WM5Storage into your htc, install it, activate and then you can access your phone as USB mass storage device from your PC. I've used it with my SD card only but it looks as it could use internal memory of your phone too. With this you can check if the data can be transfered via the mini USB.
Does your PC see the phone? Saying something like "installing new device drivers" or something like that. Check device manager.
Can you charge the battery in your phone from usb?
Btw I can't remember exact process of unlocking/flashing - is it really necessary to have synced the device before unlocking/flashing?
Following up.....
Thanks for the ideas, MuF123.
Some time has gone by.....
I tried the hard reset, and that didn't make a difference.
I was able to sync via bluetooth using a friends laptop, but was unable to sync via usb on the same computer or on my own.
I installed WM5storage and my computer doesn't see it as a mass storage device, even though it charges the phone via usb.
I am looking at this:internal error 2356 activesync.cab that comes up when I try repairing activesync, but it was a dead end the first time around.(maybe the answer is deeper there somewhere?)
I really like the phone alot, i think i will try picking up some external memory, and see if i can't use one of those unlocking services to get it up and working with a local cellular provider.
Thanks,
Nacho

Toooooo long loading times...

Hey guys,
I bought a HTC Touch Diamond in Dec 2008 and it was more or less fine until a few weeks ago when it just messed everything up. I brought it back to the store and got a new one last Friday. I was busy setting it up the whole weekend (installing Skype, Palringo, Fring, registry editor, .cab-file to get rid of the problem that the keyboard is not changing back to letters (was stuck in numeric mode), Google maps didn't work etc etc.
But now I have a new weird problem. After all the installations, everything worked fine. Then I started to put some pictures via bluetooth on the device, all fine, but out of a sudden, it's so sloooooooow!!! First I thought it's not working at all anymore, but by now I found out that it just takes ages to open programs, e.g. File Explorer, Browser, Settings... or when I receive a sms or email and click on it to open it fully... doesn't matter what I do, except using touch flo, this is working fine. And when the programs are finally running (after no joke about a minute), they are running very fast.
I have a Vodafone branding but am using it with an o2 sim. I never did a rom update or anything.
Does anybody know what that could be and could you help me???
Of course I could just return it again, but it would really suck as I just set it up, put all the contacs on etc (Active Sync isn't working as my pc has vista...), so it would be really great if anybody could help me!!!
Cheers,
mondiera

To save you a lot of time. You do not have to install some kind of ActiveSync on Vista. It is included and called DeviceCenter. Just a new name but with the same functionality as ActiveSync.
Did you soft-reset the device when noticing that it takes to much time to load an application?
Did you disable TouchFlo (eats a lot of RAM) for some time to see what happens?
Hey,
Thanks for answering so quickly... Yes, I did MANY resets, but it doesn't help. I also deleted a lot of files again, but didn't help either, and there's not much on the device anyway (data storage 51.45MB full, 34.37MB free, program storage 64.14MB full, 46.90 free, internal storage just 37.72MB full). And yes, I also enabled touchflo but it didn't help as well. As I said, touchflo is working fine, when the programs are running they are very quick within the application (quicker than my old device was), but UNTIL they are open, it really takes about 40-60 seconds - just not acceptable!
And thanks for the tip with the Vista Device Center, but I just connected the phone via usb, opened this Vista Device Center, clicked on settings, chose usb/bluetooth etc, the device asked whether to connect via Active Sync which I confirmed but now nothing is happening? And Vista Device Center says it's not connected...? This phone is really driving me insane! Seems like I have to return it again because I really can't work with it being sooo sloooooow :-(

I think you should. Maybe you should first try to connect to ActiveSync with your next device and after that start installing.
I'm sorry that I can't help you out.
You hav a faulty memory chip. Get it replaced.
