I read the whole thread and is it post #1 or post #111? Or is the same thing? sorry I'm a super noob
4.03 did not boot on a lot of devices so it was updated to 4.03.1 to fix the issue now we have 4.04 so load on that and wipe and flash 4.04 if you do not have a card reader you can acess your sd by going into recovery console typing ums_ enable to mount your sd and when you are done type ums_disable to unmount, type reboot and hold down your camera and power buttons to get into recovery and flash
If you really want to unroot find the dreaimg.nbh rc29 fot the us and rc7 for the uk and elsewhere, put it on the root of your sd and reboot, hold camera and power to acess the bootloader and it will flash the factory software, than just wait for the ota update to take you back to the latest software, could be up to a day or 2 to get

Ok, I went to flash a new recovery image on my phone. (recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2-blue.img). following the prompts here; http:hero-roms.blogspot.com/p/amon-ra-recovery-image.html#uds-search-results[/url]
My phone is now in a bootloop. I cannot access the new flashed recovery or the old one (obviously). The only menu I can get is the original recovery screen. HELP! I need to get my phone back up and running soon, or I will have to take it into sprint.
The only other Idea is to somehow create an issue on the phone so that when i take it in (Im within the 30day purchase policy) so that they cannot tell i rooted and flashed ROMs on the phone. Id like to avoid this!
HELP!
I have searched the forums for other solutions already, and I cant help but wonder if i have made it worse.
Edit: If at all possible, I need someone experienced to help walk me through. PLEASE!! I need to get my phone up and running ASAP. Its my bday (Hell of a day to be doing this)

Funny?
Im not sure what you mean. Format the phones memory or the sd card? The sd card has already been formatted (one of the mothods of attempted recovery that was tried and ultimately failed) so now I no longer have the partitioned drive that i did when the phone was working. I dont think thats any issue though, as the problem is in the phones memory, not the SD Card.
Here is what the phone says in the boot screen i get;
HERC XC

MICROP-0110

Okay I don't know how to flash a recovery except when the rom is running so what you'll need to do is a manual install follow these steps below (credit to zelfie and my search button) :
unplug your phone from your computer and turn it off before you do this
First download the ruu installer.exe
run the ruu installer.exe
open up taskmanager and go to processess
in processess you'll see "ARUWizard.exe" click on it and open file location
scroll through the temp file till you see rom.zip and copy it to your desktop
end the ruu.exe
now rename the rom.zip to HERCIMG.zip
place that on the root of your sdcard (on your sdcard but not in any folders)
Now turn your phone off (if not already)
put the sdcard back in and press volume up and the power button
when it comes back on press the volume down button
it will prompt you to push the action button (the trackball)
give it some time and it will do what needs to be done then start the process of getting root all over again. Don't use the page you mentioned before use this one.
Since I'm teaching you stuff I noticed that you don't know how to use the insert link button. Copy the link your gonna use then when you post a reply you'll notice a little globe with a chainlink, click on that and paste the link in there. Your not the only one who's done it lately otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it

Got it to update. I think Im still stuck in a bootloop though. HELP!! Its been pulling up the Sprint Logo and the HTC screen, but its stuck there!!
I rooted my phone like couple of month ago, then I updated the new AT&T partial update then today, I ran the froyo 2.2 update through the rom manager everything went ok but when i tried to use the rom manager again to restore my app. it restored then when it rebooted it came to the AT&T screen then froze, i tried to put it in recover mood but i could not, I had to take the battery off to force to power off, then when i put the battery back and power on it only come to the AT&T screen and froze. I do not know what to do?
1. Download Odin One Click to Stock JF6.
2. Launch Odin
3. Remove the battery from your phone
4. Plug the phone into the computer
5. Hold down both volume buttons
6. Put the battery in the phone while still holding both volume buttons
After step 6 the phone should enter download mode and Odin should have a box that says: COM:# and then press start. It should flash you back to JF6.
I Could put it in the download mode but everytime i use the odin it fails

Go to development, select a rom, download the .zip file, but do NOT rename it to update.zip and just copy it over to the root of the sd card.
I would recommend reading!
1. Root
2. Download Rom Manager
3. Flash CWM
4. Reboot into recovery
a. Install packages
b. It'll bring you back to 2e recovery
c. Install packages again and it'll load CWM Recovery
5. Install .zip from sd card and select the rom.zip
Make sure you have the three button recovery or can use a jig before flashing Froyo, I recommend Perception ROMS, they have most bugs fixed and DG gives great support, also he made a nice kernel. The ROM is I9000 Froyo based and it works great. I've tried out several other ROMS but some have too many bugs, for me, or are too vanilla. I ran Tayutama's ROM for quite a while. I am waiting for CM6.1 to be less buggie, I'd love to try it but I need a working phone.

there are much better options than the leaked FroYo. custom roms have been streamlined, and crafted together to give us a better FroYo experience. i would recommend just about ANY custom rom over the leaked 2.2
do you recommend a specific one?
i did that and it never came back could not get to recovery, ithink that if you do get a second chance, be sure that you are in usb debugging mode first

This guide may or may not be outdated since i am no longer maintaining it! Sorry for that!
I TAKE NO CREDIT FOR ANYTHING IN THIS THREAD
Except the guide itself...
The windows version is under review, sorry guys! But the linux one still is up
*Thanks to everyone who made this possible, GREAT WORK!!!*
First things first, you need to S-OFF your phone and in human terms that means remove the big bad boulder thats stopping you from installing what you want on your phone.
Prepare the computer
1. Go here here and download it for windows ( in this guide i will use the windows version ). and extract it.
2. Install HTC-Sync from here
3. Remove HTC-sync WHAT!? yeah you only needed the drivers but you have to install HTC-sync for that.
4. reboot your computer
Prepare the phone
1.Go to settings/applications/development and make sure USB Debugging is ON
2.Turn on Airplane mode ( you don't need anyone calling you during the process anyway... )
3.Download this and put it on your SD-card ( not in any folder ). This is the recovery Clockworkmod for Incredible S taken from here
S-OFF'ing YAY!
1. Connect your phone to the computer with your USB-cable
2. Start alpharevx.exe that you downloaded before
3. Go to here again
4. Press download again, the file itself is not important just the form.
5. Fill in your information, you will see the serial you must fill in in the alpharevx.exe you launched before. And the hboot version is also visible in the program ( look for 1.09 or 1.13 the one it says is the one you got )
6. Submit the form and you should get a nice long serial-key, copy paste or write it into the alpharevx program and press enter!
7. Wait a while ( atleast 15 min ) if it dosen't seem to work see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130346 for more information
8. You should now have S-OFF!!
Recovery
1. If i remember correctly the phone starts automagically in h-boot and it should automagically install the recovery you downloaded earlier otherwise just start your phone in h-boot ( hold volume-down and press power ) and it will do it automagically.
2. Start up your phone, connect the phone to your computer and remove the recovery file from your SD-CARD
3. Reboot your phone in h-boot again, scroll with volume up and down and choose recovery with the power and now you are in recovery. Neat huh
If this way to get recovery dosen't work try this
John Anderton said:
Shouldn't this be more like..
1. Download CMW's zip file (Available in this thread here)
2. Make sure the file is named "PG32IMG.zip" without quotes.
3. Put file in your SD card
4. Switch off phone
5. Pull out the battery and wait 5 seconds. Put the battery back in again. (This step is needed in case fast boot is enabled..)
6. Press vol down+power. HBoot (white screen with 3 android logos at the bottom) should load.
7. Wait a while.. it should pick up on your PG32IMG.zip automatically and install your custom recovery
8. Reboot into your OS and remove the zip
9. Go back into HBoot and then recovery. Use as you please (I suggest you take a backup first then proceed to flashing or doing anything else you might fancy )

I'm not an expert but I'd really have to say no (assuming by simlock you mean locking your phone to your carrier).
This method gives you s-off so you can get root.. there after, you can do what you please on the software side.
For unlocking your phone from your carrier, you need an unlock code (afaik).
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though.
Small correction suggestion

My post speaks about the technique for the IncS. Anything else, I've not tried on. The reason for this method is that AlphaRevX doesn't work on all ROMs (like the Indian/Asian GB update for the IncS). So my post talks about moving to the Optus/Virgin RUU ROM to get your phone AlphaRevXed

You should go into HBOOT and check because if it is S-OFF, you will need to know which version of HBOOT you have in order to download and generate the appropriate AlphaRevX key.

Volume down + power ( what i call hboot ) is where you wanna go i think, there you will see s-on or s-off and also what hboot version it is etc.

Alright! Thanks! So if it is s-on,I do the required steps to get s-off! But what if its s-off? I just root it and get custom recovery?

Yes, if you device is already S-OFF then you just need to flash a custom recovery and then you can flash a rooted ROM or you can add root your current ROM.

Installing Cognition has changed alot since I last applied one in December. I never updated it as I thought I bricked my phone the first time I did it lol. It worked I left it alone.
The other night I kept getting a "internal sd card damaged" error upon startup and could not access files. From what I read online my best possible solution was to restore it back to 2.1 eclair and start over. I used the Odin 1.00 tool that designgears linked to a year ago to restore my phone back to factory settings.
Now Im trying to update to Cog 5. I went to step 1 link on his Cog 5 thread. I downloaded the newer Odin, Zimage, Kernalkf1. I put the Zimage file in the PDA slot and click start after the phone was in download mode. I got the fish picture and the phone rebooted. I put the Phone in download mode again and put the Kernal file in the PDA slot clicked start. After it did its thing the phone reboots in a cycle to the white att screen to a scrambled screen full of colors back to the att screen and so on. Im thinking the scrambled screen use to be the image of that fish.
Perhaps I missed a step because its taking for granted that I kept up with all the Cog updates and should of done a step before hand? Was I suppose to restart from 2.1? Can I just root the phone the otherway with the update.zip file then install the kernal with Odin. Perhaps I was suppose to root the phone before hand then follow step 1? I thought Step 1 was a root and GB instructions all in 1? Any sugestions?
I was able to Odin back to 2.1 Eclair again. Do I need to master clear, it always fails when its almost done?
Thanks again!
Thanks all
It looks like u didn't use the one click Odin to get on the KF1 firmware.
In Step 1 of the Cognition 5 OP, go to the link and just click on the Download Link. That's all u need from there. This is the one click Odin that gets u on the "leaked" I897UCKF1. The other instructions in that link are for an "optional root", but since ur gonna install the Cog 5 Beta 2 Kernel u don't need this ( it is rooted, etc.). After u have one clicked Odin onto the i897uckf1, just go to Step 2 in the Cog 5 OP and then Step 3.
Exactly how its on the main thread..... you cant get much simpler than 3 steps....
OMG, how did I miss that, its even in big block letters! If you only knew how much I get in trouble at home because im told that something is in such and such drawer I I say I dont see it only to have her walkup behind me and get it herself....
Thanks alot cant wait to retry when I get home!
You are right it dont get much simpiler than that! No need to root if im doing cog 5 you say?

No because step 2 (flashing Cog kernel) has ClockWorkMod already. So just flash step two (uncheck reboot in odin) and boot up in recovery (Vol Up+down+power) =3
Ok, on step two..... that file does go in the PDA box correct? That is what I used. It did its thing. It looks the same as step 1. In the phone info should it say something like cog version yada yada? I also did the volume up/down power to get in the ClockworkMod Recovery v4.0.0.5. There was reboot system now and reboot recovery. Reboot recovery just keeps taking me back to Clockworkmod.
Im such a newb.
In clockwork u need to flash step 3 (the rom) wich should be in your phone
