i buy the phone HTC DREAM from the internet (i'm from malaysia) so i don't have T MOBILE SIM, but it's already unlocked.
what happen if i rooted or flash the phone with custom rom such as JACHeroski and etc.
will the phone become locked again ??
if the phone is locked, can i still able to like root and flash the phone ??
a rooted phone with custom rom, can eliminate the unlocking process ???

No. A custom ROM wouldn't lock or unlock the phone. It can be unlocked for any SIM and still be stock firmware, it can also be unlocked for any SIM and have a custom rom.
The two things are completely different.

You can do whatever you want to any rom, and that won't affect anything that makes it unlocked

so meaning, currently the phone is unlocked, and i downgrade to RC29
so it wont be locked again ?
because need to downgrade to root-ed the firmware....
is this mean, downgrade my unlocked phone firmware to RC29
in the process, it will not reset my phone from unlock back to lock status ??
if it will not make my phone locked back again during the process
and i success downgrade to RC29 i can gain root access, then i can update to custom firmware
so another question, in the upgrading process (flasing to custom firmware or cupcake 1.5) will it set back from unlock to locked ??

Hi. I also have an unlocked phone. It was unlocked prior I downgraded it, and flashed new custom roms, and it is still unlocked. As the others said no need to worry, if i'm right the locking thing is in deeper level. Of course everything you do with your phone is your responsibility.

Can T-mobile still unlock the phone after I rooted it or would they know that I put a custom rom on it??

Yes, you can still unlock it through T-Mo. No one at T-Mo needs to have physical access to your phone, they can give you an unlock code over the phone.

One has nothing to do with the other. ROMs have nothing to do with the SIM cards and SIM cards have nothing to do with ROMs. T-Mobile isn't going to come to your house and spank you for having a custom ROM because they "know"

I am an Android Developer, but so far I've avoided rooting my phone or trying custom kernels, but lately I get the feeling I could learn so much more by really getting behind the curtain so to speak. I keep reading that if you root the phone you may void your warranty and no longer get over the air updates.
I'm on AT&T an paid full price for my Nexus One. I also got the phone engraved so I'm wondering what value if any the warranty actually has. Is it worth mucking around with custom kernels on the Nexus one, or should I get a cheaper dev phone like the G1 ?
Looking forward to hearing advice from other developers and what you've learned versus the risks involved.
Oh, Do you still get OTA updates as well?
I'm interested in hearing from people who decided the warranty was or was not work the risk. Looks pretty easy from what I can see.

Does using the technique of not unlocking the bootloader also mean you can run custom ROMs and/or recoveries? Or just gain root access to the stock ROM?

You CAN root your Nexus One without losing your warrenty.
I had my bootloader Unlocked, then i got a issue with mounting SD cards.
I sent the phone to HTC Repair center and just got it back today with the issues gone and Bootloader locked
Unlocking your Nexus One bootloader does void your warrenty with HTC, but if you experience hardware issues, they dont care if you unlocked your bootloader !!
By unlocking your Bootloader you can put whatever ROM on your phone you like, doesn't have to be stock
About the OTA's.
Yes you will get them if you run Stock ROM's.
You will not be able to install them however since you are not using a stock recovery image.
Wow, didn't know they didn't care about unlocked bootloader as long as your problem is in hardware. My GPS doesn't work at all and I'd like to send in my phone for repairs but the bootloader is unlocked.How long did it take for you to get your phone back?

I sent my phone from Denmark to UK, it took 1½ week quite fast
Can you point me to a link with instructions on how to do this?
I've found a few videos and articles that say this can be done, but reading to the end they all say seem to be closed or say not to do it.
Is it still possible to root the phone without unlocking the bootloader? I've searched google, but keep coming up with dead ends.

i have a quick question.
what exactly is the difference (featurewise) when it comes to rooting with an unlocked bootloader and rooting with a locked one?
i'm pretty new to android (iOS user until last saturday), did some research today, but didn't really find much usefull information.
main reason i want to root (at least for now. i'm sure i would find more after spending more time with my xperia), is because i want to format my 64gb SD to exfat and move apps over to it.

edit: and no, i'm currently not thinking about getting a different theme/loader on it (this is one of the things you can only do with an unlocked one, right?)

Ok unlocked bootloaders = you lose DRM keys forever and Bravia Engine doesn't work. Relocking won't get them back. You can also overclock/underclock CPU with unlocked bootloader. You can also flash custom ROMs/kernels with unlocked bootloader.
Now with locked bootloader you can still have root but you don't lose your DRM keys. You can't flash custom ROMs/kernels or do any overclocking/underclocking.
That's all I can think of.
yeah, i read about that whole DRM thing. i don't care so much about the Bravia Engine and DRM, but i wouldn't mind it staying (first time i said that about DRM), so thats one of the main reason i didn't just went on with unlocking.

Well it's up to you. You can either flash custom ROMs/kernels if you want but you will need to unlock the bootloader to do that. Locked bootloader you can only have root and that's it sad to say. But you don't have to flash a custom ROM or kernel if you have root. because you can't anyway with a locked bootloader. Having root just means you can use apps that need root access.

i have the samsung galaxy s4 active sgh-i537, i have looked all over and could not find the answer. what bootloader do i use because i see many but not for my phone, i tried safestrap but not rooted. tried to get rooted and that failed so what am i supposed to do next?

You can't do that with the i537, it has a locked bootloader.
i think i got my bootloader unloacked, when i start my phone up it shows a unlocked lock with the word custom under it or does everyone have that?

That typically happens when you root the phone. Trust me, if you were ever able to unlock your bootloader you would be entitled to thousands of dollars.

The only thing you can do is use SafeStrap which will allow you to boot custom TouchWiz-based ROMs. It is impossible to install any ROM that requires a custom kernel (CyanogenMod, Paranoid Android, AOSP, etc.) on the i537.
I looked on Cyanogenmod's website below:

and it just has 1 ROM for Nexus 6. I have Nexus 6 for Sprint. Is there only 1 version of the ROM that works for all carriers ?
My old Galaxy S4 has many different builds for Sprint, ATT, Verizon, etc.... wasn't sure if Nexus has the same set up.

thats because every sgs4 has a different setup for different carriers. we only have one nexus 6, and its the same for every carrier.

I didn't have a locked bootloader with Sprint Galaxy S4. If I were to restore the Nexus 6 back to stock to do an OTA update to update everything, then re-root and put a new custom ROM does the bootloader need to be re-locked, or can the factory .img be suffice to do an OTA ?
I'm still trying to learn how to do this as it is much different than the Samsung GS4. I saw there is a Nexus Toolkit by wug fresh. Is there any benefit to doing these processes by adb vs just using this progra which seems easier ?

you dont use adb for it, you use fastboot. and doung it right vs a toolkit.. toolkits dont teach you anything, and can mess things up.

bootloader can be locked or unlocked, it doesnt matter. but i recommend that you keep it unlocked forever, as it can save your phone in certain situations. and having it locked can be the end of your device, in the same situations.

Ok. That's what I was planning on doing once it becomes unlocked. I was going to have it set like my previous GS4 and just toggle custom ROMs from there. When you mention having it locked, are you referring to when people have re-locked the bootloader then had an error flashing the stock custom ROM thus bricking the phone ? That's what worries me. Looks like the security is more stringent on the new Nexus vs. older versions.

i was actually refering to it because of the unlock setting that has to be ticked to unlock. some stock users got caught in a bootloop, then cant boot up to tick the setting, to fix their bootloop. since it cant get unlocked, their phones are a "brick".

Since the stock rom did not have developer options "checked" then the bootloader can't be unlocked ? How can you tick the OEM unlock if it is in a bootloop ?

Ok that makes sense. What is the purpose of having the bootloader come locked in a stock phone then ? What does it actually do ? Prevents root ? I probably took it for granted mine was always unlocked before so all I had to do was worry about flashing the proper carrier ROM

Security.
Security in that if stolen your phone cannot be made to work for someone else...
Someone can (and likely will [emoji14]) correct me if I am wrong... But does little to secure your data...ESPECIALLY if you stay encrypted.

It does nothing to secure data from remote access, but it will protect data (if set with a password) from physical access, providing they do not know the password. The bootloader being unlocked, with no password on encryption would allow them to flash a custom recovery and pull the data off. This will be decrypted on the fly. So it works in conjunction with Encryption. To secure data from physical access, you need both.
IF your bootloader is unlocked and you have no password, you may aswell not be encrypted
