Need help with T-Mobile Plans - Off-topic

I just wonder if anyone knows of any "unannouced, behind-the-scene" heavily discounted deal that T-Mobile might have and not published on the www. Sorta something equivalent to a sprint SERO plan. Trying to get some good deal for my sister (and possibly my parents as they are all on a family plan, but I guess if there's a good individual plan, can probably have my sister on it)
Much appreciate any suggestions.. I've been with Sprint forever but a complete newbie when it comes to other carriers....

Unlocking your N1 for any service.

Hey gang,
If anyone can help I will donate via paypal...anyone have a good sticky or tutorial on unlocking your N1 for any service provider? Do I just need to root it or is there more steps involvled? Thank you for helping a novice N1 user!

rayman,
The nexus one is already unlocked, but there are two types of N1s.
Here is a link explaining more in detail:

Thanks buddy a lot! My brother bought his N1 through t-mobile about 3 weeks ago off google.com/phone...and is already wanting to sale it for the iPhone 4G. So I guess its already unlocked he will just have to pay the cancellation fee to t-mobile when he sales it and switches over.
Thanks so much buddy.
I'm guessing that fee will not be insignificant.... And then to throw down $300 on a new phone, AND switch to AT&T in the process?
Ouch.

Some people just have money to waste and I think Apple targets people like that.
I love my N1. I don't think anyone could, reasonably, pay me enough to use an iphone 4 over my N1.
OP, you should show your brother how to put on Froyo 2.2 or root it and put on something like Cyanogen Mod. Soooo many more possibility than the icrap.
Dont forget that you will also have to pay the T-Mobile ETF and you also have to pay Google an ERF. So you have to Fee's to pay..
That is why iphone is the #1 selling phone out there...their targeted customers?
DUMB IGNORANT LAZY RICH PEOPLE...and a few poor ones that just want to look rich.
Lol we are no way rich...but if sold on ebay for $500.00 like some of the others won't you break even? Didn't know google had an etf...thought it was just t-mobile?
In your opionion since we are discussing what do you think N1 has over iPhone 4G? I have to admit I love the video chat thing on iPhone...only thing AT&T sucks...I think T-mobile probably has better service.
did you buy the phone unsubsidized or off contract? I
If you got it subsidized you have a T-mo ETF and the google ERF (equipment recovery fee). If you are withing the 14 days (which i dont think you are) you can send the phone back to HTC and cancel the T-Mo account with no fees.
If you are past 14 days, be prepared to drop some dough.
Yeah I told him that...hes not gonna switch now lol...I guess you gotta wait 4 months before you can get outta of googles etf...him and I both love the N1 just wish it had more games like iPhone...but theres so many things I like about the N1 that the iPhone doesn't have.
Dont change your contract. Just keep your tmobile account connected and buy an iphone outright when they are released and Jailbrek / unlock it to work with your tmobile sim (altho the simcard itself will need to be converted to Mini sim)
Thats a great idea...hopefully they won't go over $500 in price.

iPhones (including the new iPhone 4) are $599 and $699 full retail price (16gb/32gb).
They're $199/$299 on 2 year contract with AT&T.

Trade T-mobile Nexus One for ATnT

Hi,
I am looking to trade my T-mobile Nexus One for one which works on ATnT frequencies. I will be arriving in the US in 15 days, and will be residing in Troy, New York (zip 12180).
The bootloader has been unlocked, but otherwise there is no modification/damage whatsoever. The phone is around 20 days old. I've been using a screen protector on it from day 0, so no scratches at all.
Would anyone be interested in a switch?
Note: I am looking for a switch only, please; not interested in selling. I'd prefer that the switch happens in-person. I'll post photos of the phone if anyone is interested, but really, it's brand new, no damage at all
Cheers.

Alternatively, if someone from India has that ATnT Nexus One and is willing to exchange in the next few days, that works out perfectly for me too. Note that in India, 3G will work on either ATT or T-Mobile Nexus One.
Just FYI, if you come to the states and don't have any credit history or SSN for the US, AT&T is going to charge you a HUGE "deposit" in order to open an account.
Whereas, T-Mobile will offer you a Contract Free plan without deposits, but no discounts on phones. This won't be an issue as you already have an N1.
You can get an Unlimited Everything plan (Minutes, Text and Data) for $79.99/mo.

I would very much want to go for T-mobile. But the problem is, most students in my area will be using ATT. Then if I have tmo, no one will call me, or vice-versa
Also, ATT has some sort of agreement with my university (RPI) where they don't charge a steep deposit for students without SSN.
I did a lot of research, and found that tmo is perfect for me, but due to, let's say, "peer pressure", I'll have to go for ATT
just so you know, ATT does not have no contract plans like Tmo does, you will be stuck in a contract if you go the ATT route, unless ATT has changed their tactics recently.
I would definitely want to avoid ATnT, fervently. But, unlike here in India, in USA even incoming calls are charged, so if most people around me are on ATT, I will have to use that, right?
also, isnt there a student (college) discount for tmobile? Im pretty sure there is.

That's not the real issue.. The problem is the majority. Is there any way to get around it?
Also, my cousin who is already staying there will add me to a family plan of ATT, which will bring down my cost a bit.
Actually, I don't really need 3G at all.. But problem is, ATT will force it on to me
What is the reasoning behind wanting to change to ATT in the first place?

I'm currently in India, I will be coming to the US in 15 days. Because most of my seniors and students around my area are on ATnT, won't I have to use ATT? Otherwise no one would be able to call me without both of us incurring charge, except for nights and weekends.
Well if you are on tmo and call someone on att then you will be wasting minutes, but thats normal. My advise if you are still unsure what to do is use tmobile for a month(off contract) then if you needs are not set, either by using all your minutes or what have you, then trade your nexus one in for an att version. Why make a long term 2 year contract without testing the non contract option first.
Thank you Blueman101, nice idea By "off-contract", are you suggesting I go for prepaid? Or "Even More Plus" with Flexpay?

Before you do so, consider this in your decision.
- T-Mobile has unlimited data plan and free tethering atm while Att doesn't.
- T-Mobile has cheaper plans that att. Although ATT to T-Mobile phone calls aren't free, there is a certain amount of minutes in your plan you can use during peak hours or calling other phones from another carrier. I don't think you'll go over 500-700 minutes chit chatting with your pals that's what text msgs are for.
- T-Mobile HSDPA (if theres coverage) so depending on your location is faster than att 3G.

Thank you. As a student, I don't think I'll be able to afford data/3G on my phone at all, and neither do I really need it. My only intention in switching to ATnT Nexus One is that if ATnT forces a data plan onto me, I'll be able to utilise it. But if there was a way to avoid a data plan altogether, I'd much rather prefer that!
Hmm yes you do have a point that 500 minutes won't be depleted, and I can talk during the off-peak hours. I think I need to re-evaluate my decision. Sigh, this is confusing!

Reading this thread, I think your best bet is:
1. If you cannot find someone to trade before you get here, fly in here, post on Craig's List LOCALLY and trade face to face, it will be faster and no costs to do so.
2. Since you are going to be added to a family plan, then your costs will be MUCH lower and since you are not getting a subsidized phone, they really can't force a data plan on you either way.
3. IF you decide on T-Mobile, see if your friends have the A-List option on their plans. If they do, they add your number and poof, no minutes to call anytime.
Regardless of what you decide, you really don't have to rush to trade your phone before you get here. It will work on AT&T or T-Mobile and it will be faster and easier to swap once you get here. Just keep it in good condition and make sure the one you get works.
Oh yah I remember... If you have the T-Mobile version of the nexus one then it will also work with att. You just can't have 3g on it, which you do not need in the first place. So you really don't need to trade after all.

As I said, I really don't want to swap (especially because this N1 has some sentimental value attached to it, too). My only reason behind doing is that ATT will force a data plan on me, and then I will be paying for a facility which I can't use anyway. However, I am relieved to hear that they can't force a data plan if I don't have a subsidized phone. Do I specifically need to request this, or spend hours with a customer support tech fighting over it?

I don't think I can afford an unlimited plan on Tmo either. And anyway people on ATT will still be charged, so others will be reluctant to call me/accept my calls. The concept of an A-list looks pretty good, though.
So, in the end it all boils down to whether (and how) I can avoid the unnecessary data plan they might add to my line in the family plan

Need some quick buying advice about mobile broadband in the US...

Hello all! I regard myself as reasonably tech-savvy when it comes to Mobile Internet in my own country (the UK) but I have a friend in America who is need of buying advice, and my knowledge of the american market is rather weak - I'm not even entirely clear who the major players are, and know nothing about their area coverage or price-plans. I'm wondering if someone could either offer some advice, or at least point us towards some reliable comparison websites...?
We're looking for something that allows mobile Internet access on a laptop PC, perhaps something like a 3G "dongle" that can be plugged into the USB port. The location will be in and around St Louis, Missouri. Data usage is likely to be fairly low, I would think - extensive web browsing and email, but not large-scale video downloads. Most importantly, we don't want to get locked into a long contract - it'll probably only be two months before my friend will be off to another (US) location which has fixed-line Internet available.
Any and all suggestions and discussions welcome.
The big 4 in the US are Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. I'm not sure if you can get a month by month contract with them. I would suggest Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, or maybe a regional carrier like CellSouth or US Cellular. Does your friend already have a phone? If so, what is it? If not, be advised that on a no contract service agreement the carrier most likely will not subsidize the handset and you will pay full price for it.

Yeah, that's true, but I don't believe coverage will be an issue, as St. Louis is a major metro area. Pretty much everyone will cover it.

Thanks for the contributions so far. Please note that we are not looking for a phone, here, we're looking for a way to get a laptop computer to acquire a portable broadband connection. If we were in the UK then I would suggest a 3G "dongle" - I guess they must have those in the US too...?
As for budget, that's fairly limited - but I'd like to get a feel for what the options are, as in "x amount of money will buy you service y"; and, if possible get a suggestion about which deals are better value and which are not.

I don't think it is. Just tell your friend to move next door to someone with an unsecure router and snag their signal. Free and no contract. Other than that, I don't think you can get what you're looking for without a contract. Still, if they sign on with a major carrier, they could take it with them when they move.

Virgin Mobile does prepaid mobile broadband without a contract. I believe you have to buy one of their USB dongles though.
Checkout Cricket Wireless. Their 3G Dongles start at $50 and they have monthly plans starting at $40/month.

is it with contract or no contract, cuz the OP's friend want without contact i'm sure as its temporary and also rebates sound like a contract
Thanks guys. Cricket looks like the best deal so far. Virgin comes in a strong second. (Cricket pulls ahead thanks to the cheaper dongle price - still a little cheaper even if the dongle rebate falls through). Virgin's data allowance may be a bit more generous than Cricket's ("unlimited" vs "2.5GB") but I don't think this will affect my friend; Virgin's coverage outside metropolitan areas might also be better (although that's less clear).

Verizon and Motorola

So Verizon will no longer offer unlimited data plans to customers, but you can keep yours. When getting a new phone however you must purchase it in full. THat means around 500dollars per phone usually.
Motorola is also releasing updates now to their unlocked devices and locking them.
**** Verizon and Motorola.
My next phone will be a HTC or Samsung on (insert network name here that offers best data plan). i wont be bullied anymore. This is beyond ridiculous.
Just buy phones locally then. Plus, off contract phones are better then being locked down.

I think you have a couple of misconceptions going on there. You are confusing the brand of phone and the carrier. It's verizon billing you for data. Motorola has nothing to do with that. Buy an HTC or Samsung phone on Verizon and the price for data is the same as if you bought a Motorola phone. Buy a Motorola phone on a different carrier and the price for data on that phone will be the same as any other phone on that carrier.
Also how do you figure $500 per phone? Currently I'm one of the people grandfathered in on an unlimited data plan. That's $30 per month for unlimited data. So over the course of a 24 month contract, I'll actually pay $720 for data. People who are not grandfathered are still paying the same $720 over 24 months but are only getting 2 GB per month. Since 2 GB is plenty for me, it doesn't much matter.
The only difference with the new plans coming out this summer is that data is charged per account rather than per phone. If you add a tablet for example, you don't necessarily have to pay for any more data if both devices together stay within the cap. The thing is everyone is panicking and complaining before we even know what the caps will be and what the price will be for each tier.
For example if it were still $30 for two gigabytes I could actually save $30 per month. currently my wife has her $30 and I have my $30 for a total of $60 between us. But we each on our own have never exceeded 900 MB so we could switch to a pool of 2 GB total to share between us and end up paying half as much total. but we need to know the facts and figures to make those comparisons...
And right now, everyone complaining doesn't have any more idea than I do.
I'm just done with Verizon. I'm going with prepaid now. :|
Lol ratman you read my post wrong. Ill explain
Motorola sent a update locking an unlocked phone. Im assuming the trend dwill continue as they havent started unlocking phones they said they would. But instead doing the opposite and locking unlocked phones..
Seperately, verizon is getting rid of unlimited or 2gb data plan. You can keep it if you already have it but if you want to get a new phone (using it for your unlimited) you must buy it completely. Meaning around 500 dollars. Thats how much phones actually cost if you dont buy with a plan.
I believe you still can upgrade for free however on your plan

Straight talk has good coverage there is one drawback after you go over 2 gb of net they slow your speed down but its still fast as hell even when they do my bro has it and uses it for the net with his laptop with his droid 3 and same speed as me if not faster and so its a good deal but to get good phones like the razer droid 3 and iphone you have to buy them out right and also somthing cool you can have any att phone and you do not have to get it unlocked they have a sim that works with it!

yea i know, i used to live in europe and thats the way my parents bought them for me. but im a college student, i dont have half a G to spend on a nice phone :/ i wish these big corporations would stop tryin to mess us over. They have all the coverage so they can do what they want now.
how is the coverage with straighttalk though? the plans seem to much of a great deal to not have some drawback somewhere. otherwise why are they not leading the market lol

I currently use straight talk service with my droid 3 and it is awesome. With the droid 3 you get the option to get an att or a tmobile based sim card and you get all their normal coverage.
Looks like straight talk just earned a new customer :] well once i get my job lmao
When the time comes, I'll probably pay full price for my next phone. I just won't purchase it from Verizon. I'll buy something that'll work on their network, but without the stupid locked bootloader or bloatware.

[Q] Moving to from Sweden to Santa Monica, CA, what carrier?

Hi!
First off, I didn't know where this belongs, so I'm sorry in advance if this is the wrong part of the forum.
My wife and I are moving to Santa Monica in August, and one of my biggest struggles right now is figuring out what American carrier to go with (yep, this is MY issue to handle, since I'm the phonegeek in the family). I'll start off with telling you what we're used to here in Sweden, and I hope you can help us pick a carrier and maybe even a plan that will fit our usage after the big move.
We always buy our phones unlocked from electronics stores, ALWAYS. I'm currently using the OnePlus One which should be working fine in the U.S., but I am planning on getting an LG G4 in a few months. Wifey's got an iPhone 5S (European version, guessing she'll have to replace it in order to use 4G/LTE IB the U.S?) I suppose it depends on what carrier we choose, but if signing up for a plan and getting the phone along with it is a better option than cashing it we're of course willing to do so (I have absolutely no idea how this stuff works in America, as you might've understood by now...).
We're currently using Telenor, on a shared family plan. The cost for this is roughly $85 a month. It includes a shared 24GB of data, unlimited calls and unlimited texts. To be honest, this is way beyond what we ever use, so cutting the data amount in half should be no problem at all. We don't text or call that much either, but it's nice to have the ability to do so if needed.
From what I understand, Verizon locks their phones down tight. Locked bootloaders, SIM locked and whatnot. If this really is the case Verizon really isn't a viable option considering the fact that I'm an avid flasher of roms. My wife doesn't really care much about that stuff though, she's all iPhone all the way.
Any advice, thought or opinion is welcome and highly appreciated!

Tmobile. I hate verizon for the same reasons. But, I've heard people in that part of Cali say it's got good service.
But, if no verizon. Then tmobile
And, yes verizon does that.

Thanks for the reply! I've read good stuff about T-Mobile so I think that's what I'll go with. Apparently I'll get 4G with a European LG G4 with them aswell so that suits me great.
