Froyo for Motorola Milestone “Undecided”

And the hits just keep on hitting for Motorola Android handset owners. In a post on the Motorola Owners forum, Moto's Eurpean Marketing Director James King makes the following statement about the status of the Milestone getting Froyo in the near future:
Next European Milestone and 2.2 (Froyo). I have expressed over the last few days that the decision is pending. The team here has been collating key pieces of information and views from this community in the last month and providing input to relevant teams in Motorola so they are aware. I am pushing for that decision to be made as quickly as possible, and we can then all go from there. Some others ask why the decisions on upgrades take so long, and why does implementation then take much longer still. What I can say and have stated recently is that upgrades are not a walk in the park.
Sure there are short cuts that people can take, but when you have to integrate software to a specific hardware, then test it and integrate with third party applications, let alone any innovation from ourselves, plus then get approvals to make this all official and safe… its is a big undertaking that requires planning and resource and third party coordination to see this all through. As I say, once we have decision, we will inform. JK
So for those of you who bought the device because it was advertised as a "Flash-ready" device, it seems your wait is going to be an extended one. From this statement, it does not even look like Motorola has even begun development on an upgrade package.
This statement highlights the need for Google to develop an outstanding UI with Gingerbread, so that handset makers won't need to put non-vanilla Android on their units. Updates to phones with Motoblur are delayed because of the issues stated above and along with that is the bottom line, upgrades cost the handset maker money, money on which they will not see a return.
For you Milestone owners, you have our sympathy, it seems like Motorola is making some missteps lately with their handsets, promising one thing but delivering another. I hope that you do get your Froyo update in the near future. More info as we get it.

What the hell is this crap? The Droid is getting 2.2, of course we should be getting it as well.

I really REALLY hope they aren't thinking of not updating the Milestone to 2.2.
I mean, why would they not want to update the Milestone? The Droid is going to get 2.2, why not us? Not only do they trap us with their locked bootloader, but they want to keep us with an old firmware version?
Another point: Even if we do get 2.2, why not be open with us? Just after Froyo's announcement at Google I/O, HTC comes out and declares which of their phones will get a 2.2 update. Not to mention their devices do not have a locked bootloader.
What exactly do they stand to lose if they became open with the community and say: "We are currently working on an Android 2.2 update for the Motorola Milestone."
This was my first phone from Motorola, but it is definitely going to be my LAST one.

If they fail to deliver Froyo they will face legal action...they advertised this phone as Flash 10.1 compatible, it says it right on my box!

Yeah, no. "Flash 10.1 ready" != whatever you think it means.

I hope certainly they will bring out this update, It's a good device with great potential, it would be dump if motorola doesn't update this one. They will lose a lot of customers.

its a shame, no other phone out in the market right now that is a slider qwerty and this sleek and thin.
they announce it to get us all hyped up.. then they release it.. with a catch..
motorola decides to screw around with its devoted customers. they don't realize how much money they can make from the milestone. open it up or release froyo.. or both! sigh

Because all the speed and the better baterry managment and all the goodies anyway,are not in the rom itself but in the kernel.
Kernel cannot be changed if there is a locked bootloader.
So we may have an almost working froyo port,but without the new kernel,it doesnt do all it is capable of.

Nothing is sure....
For example Droid's bootloader is unlocked, Milestone's is locked...
As we have seen Motorola doesn't treat the same to their twins brothers (Droid and Milestone), giving to American users more than they are giving to Europeans
So if they don't give us an official report about froyo, nothing is sure...

Milestone is like a bastard child of motorola, occasionally if moto is in a good mood they might give some TLC. But all the attention is given to the real child droid, droid x.
Milestone was like an accident to them.... now with too many kids to support they decided to ignore the bastard child.....

If I remember correctly, milestone got 2.1 earlier than droid and now droid gonna get 2.2 much earlier than milestone. Perhaps there is a reason for that considering the fact that droid was released only for american market thus less customizations and localizations compared to the milestone which was released in several parts of the globe, requiring more changes and tests. Even now they are still rolling out the 2.1 update, my guess, we won't see milestone getting 2.2 not until q4, with hope that they do work on the update.

I guess we won't have a problem if motorola said that 2.2 is coming to milestone and they can't confirm the date. But the fact is that they now said that its not confirm that its even coming. I guess thats what people are making a fuss about and not to mention the complete silence treatment is not helping.

I could really see Moto trying to start moving to using Android subversions as a selling point.
Oh, that phone's old, it has Android 2.2 - better buy a new phone that has 3.0
Requires no work on their part (except locking the bootloader) and they force users into buying new handsets to get software features. Look at all the handsets on the market- they're basically all the same hardware wise: 3.something inch screen, 1Ghz processor, 512ish RAM. Only the OS distinguishes this flood of phones.
Of course I'm talking about your non-power users here.
And as to the "why froyo?" post earlier: because the sholes_2.31 kernel (current UK rom) is buggy as hell and only a new kernel will fix those bugs, like not being able to wake itself up to ring an alarm...

The 2.36 update will solve that.

Buy now or wait???

My upgrade is coming up in January but i want the Vibrant so badly that i think imma treat myself and pay full price for it, coz my current phone (omnia 2) is a so ****ty.
But reading all these lag/gps threads has put some second thoughts in my head and thinking of holding off and just upgrading in January and save a bit of cash as well or maybe even the torch.
What are your thoughts wait it out and see if samsung fixes the issues and not be out $500 or its worth buying now because the lag fixes fix everything and gps is not so bad?

been using it for over a month using stock ROMs every feature works and no lags
GPS is a must thing for me, and it works as soon as i turn it on within 5~10sec
if you don't need a phone now
then wait for better phones coming out next year

well i don't want another phone and i think the vibrant is very nice better then my freezing and laggy omnia.

Get the vibrant now and save your upgrade for the next best thing next year. At $520 tax in its a steal now that you can unlock it for free.

My advise is wait for the September update, to see what happens. I don't care about the lag personally, but the GPS could be better (even though I don't use it really).
We'll know for sure then if the GPS will work. Because it is likely other devices with competing specs to this phone will be released, and if they support GPS better (and have ATMEL too), you'd be better off waiting.

Any of the new HTC phones, including the Desire HD. They admittedly have the now infamous 1Ghz snapdragon but theres a good possibility they are paired with an Adreno 205 (which has a graphics chipset based on Power VR SGX 535). That would give the HTC phones equal performance considering froyo + will be better optimised for snapdragon processors.
Graphics performance is not as good as the galaxy s chipset but good enough.
HTC's in general I've found are better built but now were encroaching on personal preference territory. This may be simply because HTC have had more time to perfect android or just Ive had a more solid experience with HTC android phones.
rest assured there will be a whole flood of non-samsung androids come christmas so perhaps hold off till end of September and pick the best price/feature phone at that time. More exciting is the prospect of google tv, greater adoption and connection of android devices.
p.s. theres also windows mobile and its host of offerings.

In regards to Windows Mobile, unfortunately, Microsoft seems to have joined the party much too late (which is a pity actually). I don't believe WM7 will survive, because Blackberry owns the corporate market, Apple owns the home market, Symbian/custom OS's owns the cheaper smartphone market and Android owns the technical market (although, it is now accelerating it's growth).
Btw, the SGS isn't the only phone having issues. On the iPhone, people are still having issues with the proximity sensor, and the only solution for iPhone users for the antenna is to use a bumper if they suffer for the issue (or become right handed).

The main issue seems to be GPS though on this phone, as people who oppose the lag found switching to EXT fixes their issue.. But GPS, there was no known solution. So whilst there may be similar phones released in september, I forgot to mention you should either wait to see what GPS does, or wait a while before grabbing another phone (because they might have other serious issues on release).
But be cautious about claims made in forums, and wait until you see proof (even here). One idiot who owned a Sony Ericson blog claimed with authority that this phone definitely had 360MB RAM (rather than the full 512), I see people constantly grab quadrant and take note of every 0.5%-1% increase in score they see and try to correlate them to speed of the ROM (because 1% increase in quadrant would be visibly noticeable?) and I've seen people claim that because NMEA sends dodgy packets, the problem is DEFINITELY hardware, without checking if the drivers, or the device is sending them.
Make sure you wait for sufficient evidence. If the GPS DOES get fixed though, and tracking software consistently shows accurate tracks (when sitting down and moving), I'd personally recommend selecting this phone, because unlike the current competing devices, it has good hardware (even a proper multitouch controller), and we mostly know it's problems and limitations now.

Even the HTC Desired have (had) the problem with the proximity sensor, good thing our great team at XDA made a hack to fix that.
unfortunately or fortunately depending how you look at it, iphone people are not as free to do as they please with their phones.

This Phone is SWEET.
sending a playlist to my windows 7 computer, which connects to my stereo with an outdoor speaker, while sitting outside drinking wine and smoking a cigar. Priceless.

I ordered one yesterday, coming from an Omnia HD with Symbian on it I reckon this will be a pretty huge upgrade. Even given the minor bugs there is. I'll put my trust in that Samsung will fix those bugs in Froyo which is coming in less than a month anyway.

Am I the only one here who came from a K750i, or another ancient dumbphone?

OP - Mine was delivered yesterday - I'd say buy one. It's awesome!

I'd definitely recommend waiting, but not because of the lag/gps ; Gingerbread should allow for some awesome phones come this holiday season(mainly phones with a higher res).

Also figured I'd mention that coming from AMOLED; I don't think I'd able to downgrade that. The washed out blacks are so dreadful. Super AMOLED promising even better contrasts (and actually working in sunlight) can only be a winner. I did consider waiting for Desire HD, but choose not to, purely because of the screen.

What do you guys think are the chances of i9000 getting gingerbread ???
Samsung said official 2.2 will be around september, and 3.0 will be launched around mid-october , so maybe we will have 3.0 for i9000 around february
Desire HD will launch around mid-september , it will come with 2.2, and will probably get 3.0 in december - january

Nobody knows.. Nobody even knows what the specs for gingerbread are. Any reply would be guesses izmenar. The only reason we probably wouldn't get it, is if it required dual core, but dual core mobile CPU's aren't being released for a while

Hi there,
i have my Galaxy S for about 2 Weeks and i am happy with it.
The Display is very clear (even with an lower resolution than the IP4).
No jailbreaking or something else to get some stuff working on this nice phone.
Nice functions and a good UI.
Great phone!
...only GPS sucks a little bit, but i hope this will be fixed

I just read a thread on Tmonews that got me thinking, it has been 3 months since WP7 launched and there have been no updates. Microsoft was discussing updates even before launch with regards to copy and paste.
What are your opinions on the lack of updates? Is 3 months too long for the first update?
I think Microsoft is taking too long getting the first update out, since they are trying to rebuild their reputation in the mobile OS field. Also they are missing out on sales from customers waiting for features to be added that have been promised in updates (copy/ paste and multiple calendar syncing).

Could be worse. Lol. Just saying. Other than updates is it a decent phone?

It's been way too long. At first it was January, then early next year and now the latest rumours are Q1.
I'm hoping something comes before MWC otherwsie all those new phone for the platform will not have too much of a chance.
Microsoft really needs to improve this. Rather release small bug fixes then wait months to apply a 'service pack'.

I have yet to come across an instance where I needed copy/paste or missed it.
So, I don't care. They could never release an update and I'll still think this OS rocks.

Extremely disappointed in the fact we haven't had no updates from microsoft after 3 months and not even a confirmed date or month for the first so called update I'm so fed up with having to reboot my phone because marketplace is not working they should think more about us early adopters and release bug fixes on a more regular basis.

Does it really effect what you do/need or is it important to you because you feel inadequate in the ongoing mobile device internet d!ck measuring contests?

Where have you heard Febuary 7?
I have not heard anything officially or unofficially since the original rumor of January, which did not materialize.

I'm not so much concerned about the timing of this update as the lack of information on future updates.
We've been told about Mango but that's scheduled for way later in the year (plus the timing will slip).
The first update is pretty minor considering the number of things that need fixing, features that need adding and API's that need opening up.
MS will screw this up if they can't pump out some significant improvements and fast.

I'm kind of bothered by the lack of updates here's why:
They made such a big deal pre-launch about the updates and kind of used it as selling poing in most interviews I've seen
There are some well documented bugs some of which seem really important
It's the least they could do, "Harvest" was a launch title that MS used to really push the platform, and everyone knows that the game crashes (beyond resolution some times) forcing you to start all over. I'm not a big gamer, and I eventually beat the game but c'mon!
I think WP7 users have been really patient they should show us some love, if not by releasing the update in a timely manner, then at least by keeping us informed on the progress, and not keeping us in the dark
My phone evolution = WM<Android<WP7 but I'm growing really concerned. Especially when I have to keep my Nexus1 bedside because my phone gets frozen when my alarm tries to go off, or the sound stops working and requires a reboot (well documented issues).
I'm not really complaining because I can always put my SIM card in my Nexus1, HD1, HD2, or some other phones I have, but I really love WP7 and have hope for the OS.

If i didnt love the UI i would have never bought it. But it seems i keep getting more disappointed every day. Just waiting for that update to fix all the issues. Wrecks my head sometimes

Can they give us a date or what fixes will go to the first update ?
I don't think we are asking much.
I love my HD7 and WM7 that's why I'm excited about the new update.

I know its fustrating now :S even had thoughs of selling the HD7 and get DHD. Though i will wait out till the update and see how things are then. It better be a damn good update!!
I see alot of software related bugs.
Marketplace freezes, Some sort of software bug makes screen go weird. The video cam settings wont stay at 720p. Just if they could increase the performance of pivot and panorama apps i would be happy. My most fav social feeds and facebook and twitter app lag like **** and make me use the browser version to go look at my feeds. Really MS needs to hire either more people or give the existing people a kick up their hole to speed up. The whole world watching and the longer they delay this the worse its gonna get for the users who gave them their money.

But then i saw it was all a lie, when updates come with a half year or longer in delay. And developers cant do anything before a leak (im not blaming developers), so whats the deal with an open os?
My next phone is a windows mobile phone for sure.

I just switched from Windows Phone ( HD7 ) to Galaxy Note. If you think the situation with updates looks any better on Windows Phone - you're wrong mate. Been waiting for Mango quite a long time - when it arrived, i had to flash a stock rom from other device cause they cut some features from it ( like internet sharing ) which are still oficially not there for some devices ( half a year later! ). There's next update Tango coming - which doesn't actually bring anything new except of low-end device support. And Apollo is scheduled for Q4 - and 1st gen devices "probably won't be getting it"
At least, with Android, you've got custom ROMs that get updated really quickly, big dev scene, the ability to install apps from all sources - and code/test/share your own apps without paying annual fee for having your phone dev-unlocked, and they don't cut features "just because there's a new device - so go buy it".
I love Windows Phone - as a regular phone. I kept waiting and waiting for changes - but the OS is still as locked down as it was in the beginning, no "not from market" apps, no drag-and-drop media, most of apps still dont support multitasking, cant even access your files, and apps from the market, believe me, are not that useful - that's why i moved away to Android.
I'd give it another thought mate - and about Note being laggy - try ICS AOSP rom, they run really smoothly.

I've never had any problems with Samsung's phones. The leaks provide enough of a base for us to get ICS working and Damn near perfect. I'm running an AOKP build with nearly Zero bugs and get almost 5-6 hours of SCREEN ON time per day with nearly 3 days of battery life with my usual texting and web surfing. Android is about being open, and as far as I'm concerned it is. Running ICS, I have had Zero lag, only one minor glitch (which is fixed in updated builds), better battery life than most of my friend's phones, a huge screen, and a OS that isn't crazy limited. If you change, it's obviously up to you, but I would go and test the many ICS roms out there like AOKP or ICStunner as they are simply amazing.
If you would rather have the WP7 then go for it. There's no point in us trying to convince you otherwise if you really have your mind set to it.

i was fan of android but the updates man o man do it 1 time in a month or so but every 2 a 3 day....update update....

I got my device in december, and I've received 3 updates (maybe 4) since then. That's a lot of updates. I have no complaints. What you're whining about is not getting the absolute latest OS build right away. I'd much rather have Samsung pushing updates that make it a stable device than Samsung sending us crappy builds. That would defer me, and I'm sure many others who don't like to flash custom ROMs and such, to other devices. I believe Samsung is doing the correct thing and waiting until the ROM is properly developed.
Enjoy WM7. A lot of people seem to enjoy it! I was actually thinking about it, too, a while ago, but it kind of follows Apple's model of multitasking and that doesn't do it for me. Blackberry and Android are the OSs that offer true multitasking (webOS, too, but that seems to be dead in the eyes of HP/Palm lol).

The Note isn't laggy, Gingerbread is. ICS is silky smooth. Samsung needs to hurry up and get ICS on the Note because it shackles such a wonderful device. It's like Apple running the new iPad with iOS 3.0. Your phone is only as good as your software is, and Gingerbread is an antiquated POS.

I lose my patience on Android Market here in Finland, because it sucks compared to the USA Market and App Store.

Sell your Note and get a Windows Phone is my advice. That way you'll be moaning in somebody else's forum instead of ours.
I've had WinMo, iPhone, Symbian and more recently Android and Google's contribution is by far the best.

You can use market enabler and choose tmobile profile and then you can install every us app that you want. Restart and you will be using default provider flags again. So, there is no problem.
I am using lc1 stock rom, the best out there in my opinion, everything works and pretty fast too.
WP7 is no where near WM6.5 in terms of functionality and way behind Android, IOS too. Android is the best choose in terms of functionality and practicality from all the smartphone OSes out there.

I don't get folks like you. You actually purchase a phone for what it will be, as opposed to what it is.
Do you only live in the future? Don't forget the present mate.
If you're so unhappy with the lack of updates or the speed of updates, go get iOS and WP7. No one is grabbing you by the ball-sack to stay with Androids.

Actually I dont even want an update from Samsung any more,yesterday I recirved an update for the Samsung Apps after updating it stoped downloading applications alltogether!!,
"You cant download with this email from this country" bla ..bla..there was no way Icould fix that even after signing up for multiple new accounts.
If things will look like this I rather be left along with the GB.

What happened to the Kexec port? One core at 1.2 would be a fair trade for a new kernel IMO.

I tried the ics build that overclocked to 1.2 and the speed was nice but it used the gummy build which in my opinion is eww..they should have used the straight cm9 or preferably aokp nightly and it would have been a better mod..I think we all knew in the back of our minds even thought we didn't want to believe it d3 would never officially see ics..all the d3 ever was is an quickrelease to generate cashflow to help fund the finishing for the d4, which in my opinion should have waited til d5 lol sadly I don't think we will see a d5 as a lot. Of the makers move away from a physical keyboard.. and due to what's involved I don't believe we will ever see a fully working,hw codec working ics build
Oh and DAMB IT!!!!!

They will unlock it if we find an alternative way for them to rape us

I'm not a fan of ICS to be honest, but we should have the option of royally screwing up our phones at our descretion. If Verizon were to unlock us it would just bring them more full price replacement phone sales as we brick.

I don't really think upgrading the D3 would cut too deeply into D4 sales, especially if they released ICS for us after they did for the D4. The D4 is a 4G phone, so anyone who wants 4G would go for a D4 over a D3. The D4 is also newer, so anyone looking to upgrade that's a tech freak who needs the latest and greatest hardware would go for it (though they might in reality go for other phones, we'll just assume they're limited to the D3 and D4 here ). They're not going to be making many D4 sales off of current D3 users because we're still on contract for a good deal of time (assuming we all upgraded and thus renewed our contracts when we got our D3. I know this doesn't apply to everyone), and buying an unsubsidized phone is crazy. By the time we're eligible for an upgrade, they'll have come out with an even better phone than the D4 and we'll be going after that, and that would be what they want. If they're afraid of losing people who want a cheaper phone that's still good, well, I think anyone tight on budget would give up a few features and go for the D3 anyways, or maybe even a cheaper phone, so they're not really losing anything there. Our phone is still relatively new, so there's no reason that we shouldn't be getting an ICS upgrade other than Moto devs being lazy and Verizon having an unfounded fear of a loss of sales on a newer phone.

Thats why so many people are switching to Samsung ! Its simple, Samsung bootloaders are unlocked or extremely easy to unlock.

D3 was really a mistake. It is D4 that Motorola should have released first place. I guess that's why they released it so soon after D3 - just to address all those shortcomings people bashed the phone for.
And they are trying to put it to the grave now. I wish I didn't waste money on mine, but oh well...

What? What shortcomings? The only one I can think off is 1GB RAM. The only real shortcoming is the screen and they didn't upgrade that on the droid 4. I just saw the HTC one X this weekend and my droid 3 looks like its 3 years old. Kinda like when you use see your old phones screen after you get a new one after 2 year contract.

RAM and lack of much anticipated at the time LTE radio. They didn't have better screen at the time with acceptable battery drain and price. I suspect latter is the reason D4 didn't get Razr's screen.
