probably a noob question... - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I've always wondered, why we Hero users aren't getting an official Froyo update from sprint? Is it because our phones can't handle it?

It is because Sprint and/or HTC don't think our phones can handle it, or they are too lazy to optimize it for our device, or both.
In case you didn't know there has already been testing for a CyanogenMod ROM based on froyo for our device http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=722122

Cool thanks. Yeah I know Darch is building one up from scratch, but I was just curious. Thanks.

2.3 Gingerbread CDMA hero?

I heard there are requirments for 2.3 gingerbread like a 1ghz processor do you think 2.3 will come to the htc hero cdma via XDA
Hopefully itll be ported to the cdma htc hero SOME how without lag
What do you guys think? Will the htc hero roms have 2.3 gingerbread?
Those "requirements" are not official, and probably not true. Who knows if we will see a port of any kind.
I'm pretty sure that those required specs are bogus atm, I mean the amount of android phones without a 1ghz processor out weigh the ones with it. And Google just started getting headway on the fragmentation issue so why would they intentionally cause it again

Overclock your processor and you should be able to run it fun.
Yes. Both aosp and CM have gingerbread ROMs for our heros. I've been running it since January
Edit: Woops... should have looked at the date of the op first :duh:

[Q] Bored with the Captivate?

Was just wondering if anyone else was bored with their Captivate.
The next "big" thing will be when Samsung/AT&T decide to give us our last update for this phone. Then what?
I stopped depending on AT&T after the whole froyo fiasco. I've been a flash-aholic ever since and can't see myself ever going back.
Once Samsung releases the source code for GB, custom roms will only be even better.
Thx devs!

If you haven't ever flashed a custom rom then I can see how boredom could set in. I have been a flashoholic since the first month I got the phone. Tried out fixed 2.1 roms, then all the original 2.2 roms, then CM7 on one phone and 2.3.4/2.3.4 roms on my second cappy. The ONLY WAY any phone will be better is the SGS2 when it comes out. While at a ATT store I tested my cappy running g CM7 OC/uv'd to 1400Mhz against the newest Motorola and my phone was just a Tad faster out of three speedtest and CPU test I performed. I showed it to the att workers and they were surprised how good mine works compared to the Motorola that has dual core cpu's. So I WONT BE giving up on my Cappy until SGS2 comes out and then it will be my backup fo sho. Secondly if you become a flashoholic it is like having a NEW and improved phone almost every day. Thanks to CM7 and Apex

Don't get me wrong, I've flashed more than my share of roms. Maybe it's time to try my hand at themeing.

Liberty Themes

Why is it so hard to find themes for the liberty rom? I keep finding broken links.

because Eclipse is where it's at
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
where as liberty is an excelent rom, it is out of date. eclipse is the most current rom.
Eclipse runs slower for me and doesn't pick up 4g (I live at the border of a 4g area, get 4g with liberty, get 3g with eclipse.
I dont really see liberty as being outdated but more of a completed rom that doesn't need to be worked on. I really don't see too much more they can do to it until Motorola releases ICS. performance and battery life have been great (battery was better before they got the 4g to my house but that's to be expected)

Eclipse runs better for me. Liberty was my favorite rom on the Droid X so that's what I thought I'd stick with. I started running it as soon as I got my bionic and it was an improvement over stock and I thought that with a few more releases that it would be a beast but support was dropped and it was still lacking performance. Then I tried Eclipse and I was pleasantly surprised, it runs as good as I expected Liberty to run.
But even if liberty is outdated, its a bad sign for our community that we can't find themes for it. I'm still able find themes for the Droid Eris that I used 2 years ago but can't find a theme for a newer phone.

you can find themes for your phone, just not the rom you want. the system version has nothing to do with your data connection, thats what the radio is for. there will be so performance differance between users, but for the most part people should get similar results.
http://gunnermike53.com/Bionic/Liberty/
thats the links to my 2 liberty bionic themes. some of the apps will be out dated, but the systemui and frameworks will be the same.
if you are satisfied with liberty then by all means stick with it, i am in no way minimizing team liberty's skills. they just havent done any work on the bionic since they all got thier new toy.

I talked to kejar and he told me that liberty was intended to be something other developers could build off of. I'm not sure.what else they could do to it because the performance I get is outstanding. Unfortunately we don't have too many rom development enthusiasts on the bionic to play with it.
I also don't believe it to be a radio issue because I get 4g on liberty and only 3g with eclipse with the same radio. If I was having problems with 4g on liberty, I would agree. But the radio works just fine with one rom and doesn't on the other. I'm on liberty gold I believe it is, the last version they released.

yes it was built for others to work with. again, that change when the new builds came out.
it doesnt matter what you believe about the data issue. the fact is that the radio is what controls your data connection. if you want to go on beliveing something that isnt true, well, thats up to you. ive told you what the facts are, its up to you what you do with it.
If it is the radio, why does it only impact the one rom but not the other? It seems that if the problem was the radio, I would have issues with both roms.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
And I know that the radio controls the data, but that still does not explain why I don't have the same data issues on both roms. The radio hasn't changed on my phone. Only thing different is the rom. If radio isn't giving me problems with one rom, why is it giving me problems with another. That's why I don't believe the issue is with the radio itself. It could have something to do with how the rom reads the radio.

im not going to continue to argue with you. the fact is your wrong. you can argue that all you want. the most likely thing is that you did something wrong and thats why you had problems. either way i dont care. run what ever rom you want. but you have your answer as to the lack of themes for liberty.
I'm not trying to argue. I'm just curious why its an issue with one rom and not another. Apparently there isn't anyone who can give me an explanation of why? Just saying its a radio issue doesn't really explain why it works fine on the other rom.

I don't reckon most Droid 3 owners give a **** about ICS on their phones, nor do they have any clue what it even is. That is a shame though, because for Android enthusiasts like us, it is a big deal, especially when we are running ICS on it already and it makes MotoBlur look like the old LG Env interface.
Most people don't root, and Verizon isn't going to promote an OS version over a new handset. I love my D3, but it's utter nonsense that it won't get official ICS just months after Google called the version the great unifier that can and will run on every phone.

I'm still running the alpha 6 and all seriousness if it weren't for a few things I would swear it was better than alpha. If motorola only knew what a pure ics experience was like on their hardware they could easily bury samsung and the crap nexus they released.

I compared the hardware specs between XT860 and Galaxy Nexus and the only differences I really saw was that we only have 512mb ram. Same GPU almost the same CPU, I think moto is buying time so Goog can save them

Moto still has not confirmed that the D3 is not getting ICS. As the DX and D2 both received GB well after they were no longer being sold, I think it's a good possibility that it will. We'll see, though.

I doubt that we will ever see bootloaders unlocked on our current phones. I suspect that it could not be done without sending the phones back to Motorola and having them replace the "one time" programmable firmware. Why else would having a Dev Razr be useless for unlocking other Razrs. I think the only way we would ever be able to put anything we wanted on these phones would be if Moto released their encrypted key so that the phone would accept it. FAT chance of that happening, but I bet that hasn't crossed anyone's mind at Moto. Maybe we could suggest that to them.

OK, can someone answer a possibly dumb question for me? I've spent the last year happily rooting my original Droid and running custom roms - finally settling on Cyanogen Mod. Now, I'm no expert but I've found it pretty easy to do by just following the instructions that are available many places online. I now have my Droid 3 and so far am just running it stock - waiting for CM9 to get to a release version.
So, from the discussion I'm assuming that rooting the Device and loading Cyanogen is somehow something less than "unlocking the boot loader". But if it is, does that matter? Whatever that actually means it doesn't seem to be preventing anyone from running custom ROM's - or am I missing something?

But I used to run custom kernels on my Droid 1 too. I was running CM7.1 with a Chevy#1 (think that's what it was) kernel which was what let me use Set CPU to overclock. Is that not loading a "custom kernel"? Or was the boot loader unlocked on my Droid 2?
I'm not criticizing or saying anyone else is wrong - I'm just trying to understand what the differences are between what I have been doing and having a true "unlocked boot loader". What are the things that would allow me to do that can't be done now?
droid 1 is the only true unlocked bootloader moto phone with the exception of the atrix, which was accomplished with many many hours of work.

ICS Devs

Currently have a vivid and a gs2. I'm hoping for some reassurance that the devs we have here would hopefully be able to work on a cm9 or aosp ics later when all the sources drop. I've got to decide which phone to keep and ive seen that the gs2 has more devs working on stuff than we have for the vivid. Just a question. Any feedback from developers is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm working on porting ICS to the Velocity/Vivid/Raider myself. I will let you know how I go.
Also, I'm more than happy to let you test when I get as much bugs out as possible.
Upon trying to flash the system.img from Android 4.0, the handset got stuck at the HTC screen.
DHS2 is no more far along than we are in asop. Both are new still and it will take some time for either. Cm will have builds for us possibly in a month maybe sooner. Blog said something about them posting source for qsd8660 sometime in the near future I believe. That's our processor so it'd be a huge boost.

Yes, talking with an official CM Dev on IRC he confirmed it was likely that the Amaze/Rezound/Vivid line of phones (MSM8660) would receive official CM support. At the moment the 8660 is next in the list, right now CM is working on other devices, specificially the galaxy line.
CM9 is coming, it's just a work-in-progress. Check the thread in the Development subforum to see my current progress. Updates will be posted there as they happen.
Yeah, I wouldn't mind testing out ICS when someone gets it up and running on the vivid.

Telstra are really slack with their schedule as it is almost mid-March and not what we would consider "Early March"
