Problem with the modded recovery - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have a N1 with the stock firmware, updated to Froyo 2.2 build FRF91, but I have a modded recovery, Amon RA v.1.70. Now i wanna restore my recovery and flash the stock one, but i can't. I followed some tutorials but it's useless. Every time i type in the terminal fastboot flash recovery recovery.img, after went to the directory that I stored my unzipped files, it says FAILED signature. I don't know what I have to do. Help me please.

NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE CORRECT WAY, DO AT YOUR OWN RISK :
I renamed the image to PASSIMG.zip and booted into bootloader. The bootloader automatically searches for PASSIMG and when it found it went through an update/installing process which took about 5minutes. When it booted phone was unrooted again, and had the stock recovery.
Once that was done, i installed the FRF85 (i think) update.zip from bootloader recovery, then did the same with update.zip for FRF91.
Again not sure if this was the correct way as i have never seen posts directing to do it this way - have posted questions about it in the past week or two, but never got any responses...

Stock FRF91 unrooted to rooted FRF91?

I searched and read through some of the threads and really didn't find a conclusive answer to what I am looking for. So I decided to create a new thread.
My question is: Is there any way to root the N1 that has Stock FRF91? I'm not a noob in rooting, just wanted to make sure. I don't really care about unlocking the bootloader (warranty isn't an issue for me).
Can I just use the fastboot oem unlock command to unlock bootloader then install the custom recovery and install custom roms? Or is there a new method to rooting Stock FRF91 currently.
Thanks
Yes.

The instructions in that link wont work for stock FRF91 with stock recovery. I couldnt get the Amon recovery to load onto my phone in order to flash the root. I have tried to ADB it 5 times and each time it says successful, but when i go into recovery all i get is the android with the !.
By all means OP, you can try this and if you get it to work, let me know what you did. I tried 5 times and couldnt get it to work.
my bootloader is unlocked also.

after you pushed custom recovery, did you press Volume Down button while rebooting to go directly into recovery? because after you install custom recovery and let the phone reboot, the stock recovery will remain; you should try to go into recovery immediately after pushing the amon ra recovery without letting the phone boot up
let me know if that works
What is the method for rooting "without using SDK tools"? There are emulator apps in the market but they refuse to work without super user permissions? I have stock frf91 and looking for a way to root my nexus one?

[Q] Blank Nexus One (SLCD)

Hello,
Kind of a noob here. tech-savvy but new with android. Had my N1 for 3 days now.
SLCD version with Amon Ra 1.9.0 alpha recovery. Didn't unlock the bootlader
I'm having fun with custom ROMs. Installed CM6 and now wanted to go back to stock. Didn't realise the FRF91 ROM was not compatible with my SLCD phone and I flashed it on my device. Now it boots into a blank FRF91. I can get it to go into recovery console (power + volume down), but when I select Recovery, I see the nexus on logo and the screen goes black (maybe the recovery is not working anymore or it's juste not showing?).
I can't get adb to work since I need to enable USB Debugging. Is there any way I can enable it without the screen. I don't even know if the touchscreen works (I think it doesn't). So to enable it I need to navigate with the trackball I guess. But I don't know where to go to enable it when I don't see anything.
This is fun and all but I like my phones with something on the screen
Can anybody help?
EDIT RESOLVED :
I used the PASSIMG.ZIP trick to flash a stock rom onto it (FRG33 I think) via the HBOOT menu.
Thank you danger-rat and Jack-R1 for your help!

I can't get adb to work, it doesn't detect my phone. I guess it's because I haven't enabled usb debugging on the phone or because I'm not root.
How can I do those things without a screen?
You may have lost root when you reverted to stock (was it a rooted stock image?)
What is not working with adb? Have you tried "adb devices"? What response are you getting?

By connect I suppose you mean launching the adb app in android-sdk/tools? Then yes I tried it when I was in the HBOOT menu and after when I was in the black Amon_RA recovery. Still no devices detected.
The ROM I flashed was an unrooted stock ROM.
When I boot into the black Amon_RA recovery or the black FRF91, my computer detects the nexus one device that is connected but I can't see it in adb.
It seems I need to enable USB debugging on my black FRF91 and root it to be able to use adb with it.
I hate the 5 min posting limit
The problem is that you don't have the black Amon_RA's recovery. You have the stock FRF91 recovery, because you've flashed a stock image - and it overwrites everything, including recovery. Amon_RA wouldn't require to enable USB debugging to have ADB working in recovery.
I hope you have the ADB driver installed correctly. Please double-check that.
And after you do, if it's installed and you can't do anything - please look at my signature, go to the link, find "unroot / restore your Nexus", and execute. Download the latest FRG83 ROM from HTC, the link is also in the Wiki.

My drivers are installed correctly, since I used them to flash Amon_RA earlier today.
Gonna try the unroot thing in the wiki.
Tried the superboot and :
I get FAILED( remote : not allowed) in the FASTBOOT USB recovery page
It hangs at downloading boot.img .... on the HBOOT recovery page. Should it take more the 3-4 mins?
On the superboot thread, he says an unlocked bootloader is required. Don't think it will work.
What superboot?
It was "UNROOT", not "ROOT"! Using PASSIMG method.
DO NOT revert HBOOT to older version. I've updated the page.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...des_&_Tutorials#Unroot_.2F_Restore_your_Nexus
Use the passimg method, and use a card reader on your PC to get the zip to your SD card...
I think you want FRG83 (not sure what shipped with the SLCD)?

You're right, I don't want to
Ok, I downloaded signed-passion-img-FRG83_0923.zip from the htc website, renamed it to PASSIMG.ZIP. Copied it to the root of my sd card then booted into recovery. As soon as it enters it scans for various PASSIMG.XXX files, find the PASSIMG.ZIP file and starts a progress bar which lasts 20 sec. When the progress bar completes, it returns to the recovery menu and I can reboot. It never really asks me anything.
But reboot still leads me to the black screen.
I think it didn't do the update

[Q] Root on Stock Gingerbread

Tried SuperOneClick using both methods and it didn't work. Any suggestions?
I also would like to know this before I update.
Sent from my Nexus One
I couldn't get it to work either... had to revert back to 2.2 and root using Super One Click from there to restore back to my CM7 backup.
I would suggest waiting for superoneclick to be updated to support gingerbread.
Yep, that's what I was going to do but was hoping someone had a way beforehand so I could my backups going again
Install the Gingerbread update using a custom recovery, then install this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828 BEFORE rebooting.
Or if you want to root manually, follow the instructions for rageagainsthecage in my signature.

Tried to root manually with your instructions w/ rageagainstthecage but its not cooperating... Once I run rageagainstthecage, it will exit out of shell, then USB bugging dissapears on the N1 notification bar, and can't get it back without rebooting the N1, also it won't show up in windows device manager until N1 is rebooted...
Did you use this method to root your phone with 2.3.3 or did you flash the update then flash the other update to get root?
Thanks,
How did you revert back to 2.2? What Passimg.zip did you use? Or are you unlocked?

No need to unlock the bootloader. Just download the file, rename it to PASSIMG.zip, put it on the root of your SD card and boot into the bootloader. It will scan the file for a minute or so and then ask if you want to flash it. Just hit the up volume button to flash.
I've got what appears to be temp root with rage ($ changes to #), but I can't get the system to mount as rw, which is wierd...

It comes up with the message "Main Version is Older!" "Update Fail!"
My phone is not rooted and on official 2.3.3 flashed through stock recovery via update.zip
EDIT: Used first method, reflashed with passimg.zip (frg33) then updated one by one back to fgr83g, rooted (superoneclick) installed amon_ra, recovery via rom manager, put 2.3.3 gingerbread update on SD as update.zip, also put the su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip on SD.
Flashed 2.3.3 update via amon_ra recovery (had to turn off signature verification), once it reset (not rebooted) back to recovery picked to flash zip, picked su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip, (had to turn off signature verification again), rebooted, and now have root!! Now i can finally restore my apps

im also rooting but grj22 build, what do i need to download to my sd before i unlock my boot loader?
To unlock your bootloader, you don't need anything on the sdcard. To continue with rooting, you would need to have a custom recovery on your computer and use fastboot to install it after you unlock it, then flash the zip that was mentioned above (which would need to be on the sdcard) to actually root your phone from the custom recovery.

ok col, now heres the kicker...i flashed recovery-RA-nexus-v2.1.1.img as my recovery , and im pretty sure i put cryogen 7 on the sd so i fudged it up pretty good.whats the best recovery to flash i, if had gingerbread 2.3.4 which came ota au natural? also im finding the su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip file either, anyone have a proper link to it?
If you're going to flash cm7 or ANY pre-rooted rom you do not need to bother with the su.zip. Just flash the rom from custom recovery.
i keep getting the no img wrong img message in fastboot when i try to hboot?
Fastboot is used to flash the custom recovery. The recovery flashes the rom.

[Q] stuck at X

Ok, I'm a noob and I tried to root my phone. However, I messed it up and I'm not sure how.
I successfully unlocked the bootloader.
I then flashed the recovery with Amon_RA's image. All is still good.
I attempted to root installing from zip using this step "Use trackball -> "Flash zip from from sdcard" -> nexus-addon-0.1-signed.zip"
I then rebooted and now I'm stuck at X. It won't boot past that.
I can access the bootloader and all that other crap. I'm a noob so type slow and in small words to I can fix this. Until I see a reply, i'll play around with it to see if I can return the image to stock.

If you want to go back to stock search for passimg.zip or you can use any ROM you like.
my adb isn't recognizing my device. Fastboot is but not adb. This is why I can't push anything to the phone at the moment. This is getting frustrating.
take the sd card out and put the passimg.zip file on it
I did that and nothing happened. Is there something special I need to do in order for it to take?
It was working just fine until I installed the google addon zip described above from the sdcard. Is there any way to uninstall the addon from recovery?
The PASSIMG.zip method doesn't work for me. It briefly says it can't find image or something like that. It flashes on the screen very fast so I can't get the details. Any other suggestions for me to try? Like I said, I can boot to recovery just fine. I can even install from zip through recovery. I should have backed up that image before I started messing around with it. I'm learning as I go though.
Phew!!! Back in business with the passimg method. My mistake was adding another .zip when I renamed the file. so to the phone it looked like PASSIMG.zip.zip and wasn't recognizing it. Once I got that fixed it updated just fine. I'm booted now. I'll update then try and root once again.
Good to hear.
