wow, where to begin?

Well, I ditched my iphone to try out the nexus one... I just got the phone today and I barely know how to use it stock (2.1). Phone is untouched, brand new from google...
I guess I would like to take advantage of the phones power and more importantly, try out version 2.2.... any advice where to begin, tutorials etc? thx in advance, I will go back to reading this site!

First, get to know your phone. Use it as long as you can before rooting, until you get used to it and EVERYTHING it does. When it starts to get boring, ROOT it! By that time you should know every secret the phone offers!

not a big fan of patience... I would like to learn to root it and play around... but nothing brick like...
2.2 would be nice and anything else people recommend, lol....

Inside there's a link, follow the Pre-requisites on that link first... and setup ADB first.

If you barely know how to use it stock.... you should probably figure that out before you go around rooting it, flashing custom ROMs, and trying the latest BETA OS release. Once you've got the stock OS figured out and are getting bored with it, THEN root and move on.

Learn how the phone works. This is no iPhone and the settings with this phone are plentyfull. Have in mind that after you flash a Cyanogen ROM for instance, you will have 4 times more settings to play with, hence the advice to learn the basic functions on your N1. But anyways, you will come to a certain point where the GEEK in you wakes up and you wanting MORE..
DO also know that when you want to root your phone, you need to unlock you phone. Doing this will VOID YOUR WARRANTY. I will also advise you to use your phone for a period of time to see that there are no issues with hardware and build of the phone (buttons, dust under screen, trackball not working, not chargin, loose connectors etc etc..), just to be safe. Coz once you unlock it, there is NO going back to lock it again (at this point)
Setting up ADB and Recovery can be the most struggling with drivers and interface but once that is passed and you start using recovery on a daily or weekly basis, is all smooth ride from there. I guarantee you many hours customizing and experimenting with this phone than any other non-andoid phones you have had in the past.. is pretty much an addiction. i have rebooted this phone more the last 3 months than any other phones in my whole lifetime .
Rule of thumb is always have a recent Nandroid (backup done in recovery) before flashing. Flashing ROM's are usually safe as safe can be. Kernels are not risky to flash either, but remember that Kernels are the ones that controls voltages and speed of you Processor and other things, and flashing wrong Kernels can result in non functioning behavious in your OS and worst case, the processor overheating, so know what you are doing when flashing Kernels. At one point you will start trying out kernels because if you are on a hunt for more battery life, the ROM + Kernel combination are the main things that makes this happens.
Then , a last note: I addvise you to NOT update radios if you don't have any problems with the one you have. The Radio's are the one that controls your ability to call controls your phone's antenna and Wi-Fi. If you DO flash radios and happen to terminate the process, i guarantee you a bricked phone. So beware. If you upgrade to FROYO, one of the processes is flashing a new radio. So let things runs it course once in process.
Have fun trying to optimize your phone to last as long as it can on one battery charge...

I do buy and sell phones a lot... might be best to wait and see if there is a way to reverse the process and keep warranty intact first?

It should definitely be soon, and will give you a chance to have new software and features without voiding your warranty. Win-win :-D

I really recommand to do that exact thing:
learn nandroid (backups )
then play with your 2.1
2.2 will be out before you could have learned everything you wanted from 2.1

thx again, I am pretty excited about 2.2... coming from a 3gs... I kind of thought I would not like my n1.. but I see no problems with 2.1.... I cannot imagine the performance increase it claims.... gonna be sweeeeet.
So, anything non warranty killing you guys recommend? apps/tweaks etc? thx

You can download Launcher Pro from the Market to replace the current home Launcher. It will allow you to have up to 7 home screens and makes everything a whole lot smoother when you swipe between the screens.

i believe that there exists a non-warranty-voiding method of updating to froyo. it's much faster than 2.1, and battery life is also improved.
for apps, there are threads about it but, some that are just pretty darn neat would include:
google skymap
barcode scanner
google goggles
some augmented reality apps would be:
layar
wikitude
for a better typing (rather swiping) experience, get swype. you should be able to find instructions on how to put it on around here, and there is a non-timed release in the apps/themes section
i use 'and explorer' as a file explorer
pandora is a must if you like internet media
google listen isn't bad (although i hear good things about other apps) for pulling down any podcasts you like
and, go give the navigation app a try. it's the bees knees. not only does it give turn by turn directions, but as long as you load the trip while in a 3g or wifi connection, it caches the whole thing, so you can drive through dead zones and won't lose the the path, as long as you have gps signal. plus, it switches to street view to show you the destination, when you get there

yeah, i updated mine via the non-warranty-voiding method, but since i like some of the apps that require root, i had it rooted
to update to frf50 (Froyo) without voiding warranty, you need to download the OTA file and rename to update.zip and place in the root of the SD card
1. power off phone
2. hold down volume down button and press power
3. scroll to recovery and hit power (should take you to screen with an exclamation mark or something similar
4. while holding down power button, press volume up
5. this should take you to stock recovery and you can now apply update.zip from sd card
those may be the correct steps, i don't think i'm missing anything; there's some guide located in the general forum

Really! Is it a must you root your phone?

I have been reading a lot about this rooting of the phone just so you can install a fix that will get rid of all the so-called Lag issue. Now, I really like to know why is it a MUST to be able to root your phone just to increase the speed of your phone? I do not get it. Are'rt the available programs in the market, to shut down unwanted programs down, sufficient? Like Task killer etc.
I am ordered my phone and hopefully will be getting it soon. But it worried me that the first thing I have to do is 'Root' my phone because of programs running in the background? Does not sound too logical to me.
Samsung is coming out with a new firmware or update next month, so is it really neccessary that I start messing up my phone for something that will be officially available to the public?
Is this lag on every single new Samsung Galaxy S phone on the market?

Is definitely NOT a must to root your phone! It depends from what you need!
New android devices this days, specially those who have a Snapdragon Cpu, I think they don't have ANY lag problems because they are superfast!!
And the purpose of the root is definitely NOT a multitasking problem or how many app they are running in the background....
I don't know about the Samsung in particular, but I think that you won't have any lag problem or whatever if you buy it...
Rooting your phone invalidate your warranty and could brick it, and since now you are "new" to the rooting experience (from what I understood), I recommend you to wait and see if you just like it with the official rom..
Just to make you understand what a root is... I have and HTC Hero and my CPU is a Qualcomm 525 mhz (pretty old ) and I wanted to give that extra power needed to use also new apps and updates from this days that otherwise I won't be able to use at their best with my old phone.
With the root gained I could overclock my CPU up to 730 mhz, use apps like "titanium backup" or "APP2SD", update my old 1.5 android to a new and superfast Froyo 2.2 that otherwise my Hero would never get, and basically customize my phone in many differents way.... understood?

Thanks for the reply. I understand you clearly but haven't read the new Samsung Galaxy S many posts and that how majority of the folks are rooting because of lag issues, is what made me make this thread in the first place.
As mentioned in my first post I will be a new Samsung Galaxy S owner and was trying to prepare myself by reading many( and I do mean many) post about Samsung Galaxy S, just to get myself familiar with the phone through the eyes of other owners while I wait for my phone to arrive.
Most seem to be rooting their phones so they can install some lagfix. Well it seems whatever lag they are experiencing seems to have been all cured up after this wonderful lagfix. I just wanted to know if it was really necessary to start on this course, immediately after getting my new phone?

Stock firmware isn't that awful.
Take into acount that in december Froyo going to come and some performance issues going to be solved.
Some people just love to get all the juice out of their device, just like with PCs and overclockers.
It's not must thing for everyone. Aspecially if you got no time for it or real need.
I rooted my device to add hebrew fonts for example. Never applied lag fix.

BTW, I heard the SGS has a GPS issue that will be fixed with an update from Samsung.

Many ppl will recomend you some kind of task killers as the first must program...but I dont really think that is needed in android os (actually it can decrease performance).
So maybe the only must app is...Barcode Scanner to help you download all the other cool apps!
About the GPS problem, yes there seem to be some kind of a problem, but I never noticed anything that horrible. Maybe because I use GPS only once or twice a week, or maybe my geo location is blassed with multiple satelites, I really don't know.
If you going to relay on your SGS as main navigation device, maybe you should wait for froyo update to see whats fixed and what isn't.

Thanks Mike. No, I do not use GPS often so I can survive without to a point, maybe. Perhaps, maybe if I need to find a particular location while on foot, that I do find it handy. Otherwise I use a proper scale GPS system in my car.
So, I can wait for the Froyo update that s suppose to come next month.

My brother in law has an unrooted SGS running the stock Australian firmware. He still replaced the launcher with LauncherPro, which made his phone a little smoother. It's definitely still quite fast and usable.... just not as fast and usable as mine with the JM5 firmware and lag fix

Appreciate the input Jimmy. I think I'll wait until the Froyo update and GPS fix to be officially release and see how it behaves before making any major changes to my phone. As long as it does not stop me from enjoying all the benefits of the apps market and whatever enjoyment there is for this phone.

You need to root your phone if you want to install the latest firmware.
If you are using any of the latest firmwares, you don't need to use Task Killer. Android is smart enough and able to manage resources without any problem.
I'm on JM2 firmware with lagfix. Blazing fast.
If you just bought your phone and didn't do anything with it, it's slow as hell.

Umm.. That's WRONG! Once again, ROOTING IS NOT REQUIRED TO CHANGE FIRMWARE OR INSTALL OTHER FIRMWARE!!! And I wish people would stop saying this..
That being said, you don't really need to do much these days. You possibly need to root for lagfixes (I've never used them though). I don't really care about the lag that much honestly. But unless you are messing with the operating system, there generally isn't any need to root. I am running an unrooted phone now, and it does everything I want. But each to their own...

That's exactly what I do not understand. Samsung makes a firmware that will be updated in the phone( without rooting). So why do people root to install a firmware?????
Can't the lagfix be install regardless? Didn't Sansung make the unofficial( or beta) firmware that you all are installing into your phones?

I'm waiting for my phone to come through but I'm not going to this as I'm not confident enough and I don't want to brick, btw when we get the phone should we charge it for 24hrs or use it till it dead and charge till its full and used till its dead and do this twice so the battery apparently gets better I read this in another post and was wondering what is better?

Like I said, I'm going to wait for the official Samsung Froyo update that is suppose to retify all the issues, both Lag and GPS.

From what I can gather (im quite a newbie when it comes to rooting / firmware), most of the firmware listed on here and samsung-firmware.webs.com require your phone to be rooted.
They are not officially released from Samsung, but instead are beta firmware which has been leaked out to the community.
I myself am running official Samsung firmware which was released through Kies (Australian JG4 via Optus) and my phone is not rooted.
Please correct me if im wrong, as I am still quite new to the SGS

I like to have reboot button on home screen rather than holding power buttons for 6 seconds.
I like to have adfree app, to get rid of all annoying adds.
I like to use lag-free fix to make it even faster.
I like to use autokills app to configured how galaxy s manage its memories.
I like to use MyBackupPro to backup my apps, when I am upgrading factory firmware through kies and not having to re-install all my applications one by one.
Considering that rooting is painless safe and reversible. I don't see the advantage of not rooting your phone.

I guess that prettyuch sums it up But what happens when Samsung releases the new and official firmware that supposely does all that you have mentioned( I am assuming so); don't you have to go back to the original Firmware to be able to update to the new one?

Ok.. Clearly, there is a lot of wrong info out there.. Root access is not needed at all for running beta firmware.

[Q] Poll On Successful Update to Froyo for I9000(m)

I would like to know how many of you had successfully updated their SGS (Samsung Galaxy S) to Froyo. I think this will help us understand the failure rates so people who do not want to risk bricking their phone.
1) Updated with no problems
2) Updated with problems
3) Tried to update and having problems
4) Did not update at all

If you are talking about roms.. Well most are a 1. I habent heard of an official froyo update. And.if.you by chance do.brick it, there are ways to unbrick it pretty easily.

I have the Bell Vibrant which is the I9000M.
I thought that Bell released an official update for their new Froyo. Check it out here

Did update my Bell Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000M with Bell release Froyo available using Kies and all seemed to be running smoothly until I had issues connecting my bluetooth and trying the voicedialing features that did not work in my case and after got Force close on every apps. Did a shutdown and got the device in a loop at boot up.
Will try tonight to reload the device with 2.1 and see from there to retry 2.2.

I upgraded with no problems but I did do a factory reset as things started to get a bit slow and from what Ive read it is a good idea to do a reset to get rid of any residual 2.1 stuff on the device. Since then the update has been working well for me...

I have 2 SGS phones so you'll just have to add another vote to the "successful upgrade" option in addition to the one I was able to cast
I've flashed the following 2.2's without any problems so far:
- unofficial JK3 (Canada) via ODIN
- official JK4 (Canada) via Kies
- straight JPU via ODIN
- JPU Doc RomMOD v2 via update.zip recovery
No problems with flashing.
And yes, clearing data & cache is helpful (mandatory?). Backups are good!

there is NO problem upgrading.
the Internal SD failure comes AFTER you have SUCCESSFULLY upgraded the phone, a few hours to a few days later

Cool. That makes this type of poll misleading then because someone reporting success today may have issues tomorrow (we can't change our vote correct?).
That's right. I saw your post about your phone going bust. Sorry to hear that.

I just can't get Kies to work -- it just says "connecting to device" and it hangs
Also can't install MPT USB drivers -- always fails. I installed the correct x64 bit Windows 7 drivers and everything.

Wow. I didn't think people would have problems after the update. Man, I really should wait until we all know that its okay to update. I am new when it comes to the SGS so if I fail at it, I don't want to start crying. This is such a nice phone....so if it works, why break it?

Same - I am hessitant now to upgrade.
I had one of the original phones, it sucked, no GPS, etc. and it died on me.
I got a new phone, for free, my buddy works at bell, GPS works fine, and this one I think had the internal card failure b/c one day it just went black - reboot and the bottom lights light up but it doesn't boot in.
I did a recovery mode -> hard reset seemed to fix it -- tho i lost all my apps and contacts etc.
Now I haven't rooted or lag fixed, but I REALLY want froyo.
But what's the point ? I already had to do a reset b/c of internal card failures in the past, that means im almost guaranteed to lose this one if i upgrade,...

If your card is gonna die its gonna die no matter if you upgrade or not....Flashing just seems to speed up the corruption.

Thats a good question. People seem to be having big issues with this new Froyo update here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=867157. I really hope Bell gets a fix for this new "firmware Froyo 2.2" that they just released.
If the Nexus S is the so similar to the SGS I9000M why dont we have Gingerbread (2.3) yet?

If I was you I'd flash the crap outta your phone. If your black screen was due to a weak internal SD then it's gunna go. So flash it and hope it goes so you can get a new(repaired) one. Of course the wait time is a bit long right now for repairs. And there's no guarantee that the newly repaired one won't blow.
Damn this phone....

my phone upgrade went well..but i have occasional force closure on apps. Then one day it just hang using Msn Talk Pro and I had to pull the battery out to reboot and it never came back on - stuck after the bootup S logo. grrrr..
how long does the warranty repair usually takes?
Anyone in Vancouver Canada that are non Bell subscriber have any problem bringing it in? Which store do you guys go to? I will try the same store for hassle free repair job. Thanks

Took mine into the bell store at guilford mall, originally purchased at wireless wave.Unlocked and being used on the fido network. No issue at all, the guy took down my cell number as a way to track its progress.

There's no way to know for sure. Some ppl seem to have a bunch of force closes bfore it dies and others just turn it on and it's dead.

[Q] I rooted Captivate w/Froyo 2.2 - Now lots of problems

I finally updated to the official AT&T Froyo 2.2 probably about a month ago. Everything was working great. I wanted to root/enable sideloading apps/unlock. I used SuperOneClick 2.1.1. The root worked fine (at least I think so). I was not able to enable sideloading apps so I read online how to change the value of sideloading apps from 0 to 1. I also unlocked the phone using the Galaxy S unlock app from the the Market.
Almost right after the SD Scan would take a long time and then I would get a red SD card symbol saying "Low on Space - Database storage is getting low". I tried clearing cache's to fix the problem. It didn't fix anything. Soon thereafter I started getting "Message Memory Full - Incoming messages rejected due to full...." I cleared phone log/txt messages but it hasn't fixed anything. I looked at my internal and external SD card. My external card is 3.68 total with 17MB available. My internal has 12.67GB available.
Today all of a sudden if I try to look at my missed call I get "samsung captivate the application phone (process com.sec.android.app.dialertab) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again". I get similar messages trying to open Gmail. I haven't gotten it on any other apps yet as far as I know. It vibrates like crazy when the apps crash.
Can anyone help me with the problem? It's making my phone useless right now and my battery is dying much quicker than before. Thanks!

My vote is to go with a custom ROM. It will solve all of these problems. Cognition is the most similar to stock and is quite easy to flash. As for the problems you are having, I don't know what to tell you.
Try Cognition 4.5.3. You won't be disappointed.

Flashing a Froyo rom is not too bad. Since you have stock 2.2 it will be a little more tricky than if you were still on 2.1.
First, what is your build number? look on the sticker under your battery to see a four digit number beginning with either 10 or 11.

Make sure you READ EVERY LINE OF THE OP. When you think you got it, read it again, then give it a shot. For the time being just factory reset your phone, should clear up some of your issues. Good luck

and if (or when) you manage to brick it do not panic,, go back and read some more,, seems that almost everything an idiot like me can do is fixable,, and most normal people are pretty safe,, they are not going to kill their phone,,,,if they read and follow instructions,,,not doing those two have found my phone in some pretty unresponsive states,, but I am running mosaic VI now and loving it,,but have been on so many I had to go look,,and have finally I hope learned the value of reading ( and those other people probably do know more than me so I should not think I know better ,,,yet)

Not sure how much of knowledge you have gained before doing these attempts of changing some values to enable side-loading...
I would suggest to do factory reset since you are still on FROYO and see if this does the magic.
If it gets locked back to AT&T, I suggest just talk to AT&T rep to unlock & side-enabling. Once all is well, you can do rooting as you did before. Hope this helps to solve your problem.
For any other help, we have XDA here and get some time to go through forums. As others suggested, please read, understand and act.

A day after I posted this the phone seemed to be working right. However Jackman pointed out if it happened once it's almost sure it will happen again. I tended to agree with him so did a factory reset and then flashed with Cognition 4.5.3 with a lot of Jack's help of course. Right now seems to be working flawlessly. I do like this whole custom ROM idea. Even thinking about buying a used Captivate on ebay just so I can mess around with other ROMs. Thanks everyone for your help & input. If you have any other suggestions my ears are always open...

Just for a bit of encouragement ive been using Cognition 4.5.3 as my daily driver for the past 4-5 months and have never had a single issue with great battery life. Ive tried numerous other roms on this forum and always have run into a boot loop, force close, or other random issue that makes my phone unstable but with Cognition I experience what my phone was meant to be like.

Installing new ROM - some help/advices

I've never done this before (did it a few times with old omnia i900 and WP6.5, never android) so I need as much help and advice you can give me
I know I need Odin, Kies, a rom and a kernel(??) and drivers. Found all the links from the video /watch?v=bd1zwH2-kX0
If there's a video on youtube showing everything that has good quality you can just redirect me there.
Anyways, my mom uses this phone so I need it to have as much battery life and ease of access possible so which ROMs do you recommend?
I also need to know what I need to have to flash the phone (USB cable and something else software wise, maybe) and what are the risks of flashing it. The reason I'm flashing it is because it feels slow for some reason and it keeps vibrating all the time. Does it need an sdcard because I don't have one.

strange to see you struggle with the same phone as i am the same day on an old phone like this, im trying to get google play to work on it, but it seems the custom backup installed rom is just messed up, google play just give blank screens or some weird errors, the internet and other things work, but https also messed up on some pages, and the date is set correctly =/ which is what usually is wrong on my pc when https is messed up
so im also looking for advice on a custom rom, the lighter its on resources the better, is it also possible to use ROEHSOFT_RAM_Expander on this phone? is the kernel limit of swap ram a software thing or a hardware think?

Yes. I also have same problems, white screen for play store or errors saying it crashed or no connection. I think a different ROM would solve all these problems. You can try Cyanogenmod.

yes tried the one on http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...samsung-galaxy-pocket-gt-s5300-t3033992/page3 and messed up phone boot, the steps are not very clear on that link, will try whatever i can today, else hammer the phone and buy the kid a new one, not going to be stingy with the kid or waste a lot of time on the phone, but i was trying to ditch the throw away economy, and forcing the kid to buy his own phone that way he appreciates what he have a lot more.:laugh:

I like fixing and troubleshooting stuff more. But only if it's mine and I don't have much to lose. You might've missed to root the phone.

it was rooted i think i used this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2365697, and Superuser app was installed after that process so it seems it was rooted, i used airdroid screen cap function to test because that one ask superuser permission and it worked after the root
I got whatsapp and airdoid working without google play but really want google play to work, did you try Cyanogenmod or are you scared to mess up the phone?

I haven't tried anything today. My mom just got the phone today so I don't really want to brick/mess something up.
I tried only installing few apps like Facebook, Opera, Chrome, FB Messenger and Viber. Some worked right away, for some I had to download different apks because play store doesn't work. I haven't even tried rooting it. It could be rooted using kingoroot, I might try it.
I noticed that play store works only when you want to update an app. It didn't crash when it redirected me to YT app and FB app update.

i installed kitkat4.4 from this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtYI91-S8Tk
google play worked until it updated then the blanck screen stuff started to happen all over again, but at least the kitkat version does not eat up all the internal storage like the rom i had from stock, so it only uses 20% vs 80% 90% so for that reason ill keep it until i see a better alternative on the forum, may play with it again but out of time.

Did you do everything like from the video or did you do something that is usual thing to do before flashing that a noob like me would miss?
Have you tried flashing it again but this time without updating the app?
Also did you use sdcard for this or via usb on PC?

this is the way to go for me, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2698533 this one works wonderfully
it has chrome and flash working, it also works as smooth as silk vs the stock or the kitkat 4.4 roms, so don't waste your time and trying to get the other ones working.

2-then installed using the youtube video as a guide, i didn't do as the description said but rather did exactly what i saw in the video, the guy dees a bad jobin the description, he mentions step (5 - Select the vM00CWMv3f) but in the video he never touches it, so dont search for it or download it just ignore that step or do exacly as the video, use J K L to play pause advance or back the video and make sure you mirror him xD
if you do the odding thing your phone will be like the default mode, unrooted and so but no need to root it to install the rom of the video

PD : google play is still a messy mess with its blank screen with the kitkat version of the video , i uninstall/downgrade google_play_services and the google_play_store, then i open google play and accept the termns and install my intended app with the old google store, then google updates an installs its bugged app all over again without me wanting, then i go uninstall or downgrade the two apps all over again and install my next app with the old google play, its morroning all afternoon already ^_^

PD2: did not use an external sdcard, only the internal, and i used the usb cable with the oddin program, then after the odding ting, i did use the cable to upload files to the root, then i did what the video shows without cables or rooting

Why is the notification bar no the bottom on the CM7 one you sent?

BTW if you try flashing it again you might try recording it with an HD camera to see the full process on how to do it. I could also edit it and add annotations and you could post it to youtube if you want. If you do that please make sure it's bright enough in the room

im still playing wit hthe phone, i reflashed to stock several times already, the one that work smooth as silk is still the best and no need for external sd card to use that one, but im trying to get the one that i meesed my phone up with to work, i got a external sd to test it but im still cant get the cm11 to install when on external sd card

just show your mom this forum thread before you try anything with her device, remember i was ok with hammering my device, so i didn't care if i killed it, but it works very nice with any of those rom, the guys that worked on those know their stuff!!, and is probably worth the effort flashing the device, also leave your sim chip in when doing the rom flashing, it seems the provider sends the configuration automatically to the device when it starts the new installed rom, if not then be prepared to search the internet for the apn settings of your cellphone company or to call them and ask.

I know the APN settings for my provider. My mom doesn't speak english so it would look like chinese for her.

this phones vibration is dead, and it didn't get it working with any of the roms I've tried, so wont be able to answer you on that, this phones google play didn't work, not even with the stock rom, so that is why i started to flash it with the downloadable roms on this forum. Hyperion and the KitKat Smart R2 roms are really nice roms, i would say for a woman/girl use the 'KitKat Smart R2' rom and for a man/boy use the hyperion, the hyperion have a more drone electronic type theme, the phone will say with a robotic voice "ill be back" when you shut it down ^_^
