Galaxy S Dead (not like the other ones) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all guy's,
i have a realy strange problem , i tried to find a solution on this forum and on the net but i didn't find nothing
Today i was trying to change firmware by Odin (it was not my first time) , i used not my home pc ( like i did many time) but another one, opned odin, load the firmware , plugged in the galaxy in download mode and i clicked on start (obiviusly odin showed my galaxy s) but program stuck and on galaxy screen there wasn't the progress bar as usually. After five minutes i unplugged the phone and i rebooted it, on screen there was the computer and the phone with the yellow esclmation point.
i unplugged the battery and than i putted the galaxy s in download mode (vol down+ power+ home button), than i rebooted the pc, i deleted all the tons samsung modem drvier installed on windows xp (i think this was the problem of the bad flash on odin) , opend again odin, plugged the phone on the pc but nothing happned, the pc didn't recognized the phone (not like the others) , i connected the phone to usb to the computer and nothing happned how if i wouldn't connect nothing on pc. Obiviusly Odin didn't recognized the phone and kies also. I went on another pc , i installed kies , than odin, and i connected my phone and i had the same truble, when i conect my phone to the computers is like if i don't connect nothing, becouse nothing happen on computer. My galaxy go in download mode but the computer's don't recognize it!

did you try another usb cable? maybe your cable is damage... just covering solutions...

I don't think your galaxy is dead, as long as you can access the download mode you should be ok.
Try with different usb ports/cables/computers.
But it sounds most likely that your drivers aren't installed properly. You shouldn't have uninstalled them in the first place if they were working lol (it's unlikely the driver caused bad flash, it either works or it doesnt!)

plug it in the computer without the battery or simcard or memorycard, do it in windows and not in Odin. Then try to connect to Odin.

Welcome to SGS Bricked Club (unofficial)
Your phone is not dead, just bricked.
Do this
1. Re-install all your Kies to get SGS USB driver (you shouldn't have uninstall it in the first place)
2. Switch your phone to download mode
3. On Odin, select 512 pit (ONLY), and checked "Re-partition" option
4. Connect your phone and USB (remember, download mode first > Odin > USB Connect)
5. Click Start on Odin
6. Wait until Odin turn green with "SUCCESS"
7. Click Reset on Odin
8. flash what ever firmware you want, accordingly

Without trying to be too optimistic, as well as not being too much of a downer, I've had that particular "phone ! computer" screen a few times and not had any problems flashing with Odin later. Usually takes a couple of PC and phone reboots but like someone said, as long as you can get to the recovery (android at work) screen one way or another, you *should* be fine.

I've got that problem also many times and have seen the "phone-to-pc" screen, too. Take a look into your Device Manager under modem before you plug in the phone. After you plugged in the phone is there a modem displayed? My Problem is that Windows change the Driver through CDMA Modem for Samsung and with that Driver odin doesn't work. I've managed that problem by changing the machine or the port for a new driver select.

frak!!! krap! i think my phone is krapped out.
although i can get to download mode, i can not get to recovery mode
when you flash official firmware, are you supposed to flash with re-partition checked, the pit and the pda file all at once?
cuz i get stuck on...

sorry to hear this mate, I personally never experience this.
Mind share your Odin setup for flashing?

ok guy's some of you didn't focus my problem (maybe becouse of my crap english) anyway the problem wasn't how to go in download mode but the problem was another one, once i was in download mode the computer didn't recognize the phone, it was like if i wouldn't put nothing in the usb, and well it wasn't a usb clabel, usb port, driver or some other things but it was soemthing fuked up with my phone.
The following procedure is not needed if you have some problem with driver but only if your computer defintly don't show nothing when u plug the phone in download mode after a bad flash.
Turn off the phone and unplug the battery, connect the phone to the computer, wait a minute than click the 3 keys for put the phone in download mode (vol down+home+power) and plug in the battery. Your computer should recognize soemthing and u will be able with the correct driver and Odin program to flash the phone again. Your phone should be usb connected all the time or the procedure don't work.
I have another bug now and i don't know if it's related to the firmware(i tried on jm6 and jm7) or there is something wrong with my phone usb.
When i turn on my phone randomly don't work the sound selection on the menu and when i tap the number on the phone keyboard. If i plug in the phone on the pc i'm not able to use kies or other things like mass storage but on the phone start the music player (like if i would plug in the headphone) and the bug get fix.
When the bug come if i not plug in the phone on the computer the ringtone work if i get a call but n the phone there is the handsfree option activate.
I don't know what to do and i hope u understand my problem even if my english sux hard
Thanks for your attenction
EDIT: guy's the bug is not related to the firmware (i didn't have it first of yesterday), i tried now the jg5 and i still to have the same problem as on the jm6 and jm7 , sometimes randomly the button sounds don't work when i'm in the menu or when i'm making a telephon number even if the option is enable in the menu. for fix it how i write up herei need plug in the phone cable on the computer or turn off and than turn in again till it get fix.

hI,
i BRING UP A NEW PROBLEM THAT I AM MY SELF INTO.
As many of you i used odin to flash my room but this time i used an odin called "I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low",everithing looks fine after flashing but is not,in phone info shows that my model is samsung SGH-i897,and every time i try to charge or connect via usb the phone turns off, doesn't go in download or recovery mode, basically is dead couse i cannot change nothing and the phone buttons does not have the same function.
How can i go back to galaxy s?

You haven't got a captivate then?
the proper ROM wouldn't be on this forum but the captivate's one, but when guessing you're actually in possession of a i9000m; why not a i9000 rom from the i9000 section?
cos a i897 is a galaxy captivate, doesn't seems wrong when you have one? =/

And once again epic fail.
Your phone is bricked now, go and exchange it.

I think that last hope is try to forcing download mode with "resistor on usb port" method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551

Thanks guys,
What is bad is,that every time i try to connect with usb or charger the phone turns off and nothing shows on the screen, once i remove the cable the phone turns on normaly.Maybe i can still go in download mode by changing the configuration of the buttons, couse cativante has 4 buttons and galaxy 3,the think is that home button has no function and back touch button become home thats way i cannot go into download mode no home button. If nothing will work i gues i have to follow Jonsat's advice.I still have hope that someone nows and shares with as.
Thanks !!!!!!!!!!!

Man, i have an idea:
1) Download z4root from market, root ur phone;
2) Download Rom Manager and flash recovery;
3) Download a Rom in which u have the extend power menu;
4) Flash Rom;
5) Boot into Rom and enter in the extend power menu;
6) From the extended power menu press "Reboot into download mode";
7) Flash from Odin.
PS: if your power menu button doesn't go well u should download from the market apps that emulate the power button menu!
I know it's a crazy idea but in my opinion you should try!

I have exactly the same problem, the pc recognize the phone just as unkown device.
Witch driver do I need to get Odin to work?
Thanks in advance

I need some help here. My phone went dead during charging yesterday..... it was fine one moment and last check was at 80%. Then about 10 min later when I wanted to unplu & use... it was not responding at all. Noticed that the phone was rather warm as well.
I've been running "Insane" kernel for a week with overclock to 1200 and under volt about -75 across the board. Did I fry the chip???
Phone is not respondingf at all. Doesn't charge, cannot boot, cannot do into download or recovery mode, PC does not even see it when plugged in, pulled battery & re-insert does not help.
What other options do I have??? Last resort is to bring back to the service centre, but I'm afraid that they will not give warranty for it if checked that I have an "Insane" kernel.
Advise & feedback please. Any other areas to check?

[Q] Help! Woke up this morning and phone won't turn on!

I woke up this morning and my phone won't turn on! I hold down power and see the Samsung splash screen... then the display goes off and nothing happens. I can't launch into recovery mode... I can launch into Download Mode, but can't do anything from there... (no response to any buttons)
I tried pulling out the battery and SIM - to no avail...
I am running a rooted Bell phone with the lag fix.
Please give me suggestions! What do I need to do to recover this using my PC and adb?
Time to recharge your SGS?
Before i give you the bad news
try Flashing the phone with Odin, see if you can complete a successful flash
However you'll most likely see an Odin error concerning mounting the drive, your Internal SD drive is most likely dead, and it'll need to be replaced by Samsung/Bell service center.
there are many known cases like this related to the lag fix

if you hold the power button, does it turn on at all?
how far does it go into the boot process?
does it get stuck after the pretty Galaxy S swirling logo?

I don't get the swirling logo... I just get the static splash page "Samsung Galaxy S" - it stays for about a second, then the screen goes black.
I'm trying to figure out what to do once I'm in download mode... I have Samsung Kies (which won't detect it...) and Odin (which won't detect it)

that doesn't sounds right
try installing Odin on another machine
seems like the PC you are trying to use has the USB port locked up.
i've had that happen on mine before
if you turn off the PC, remove the power cord
power it on, then put the power cord
and power it on again
that should reset it
Ok, Odin seems to recognize the phone (it installed all the drivers when it was in Download Mode) - I clicked "start" and got the following:
<ID:0/008> Added!!
<ID:0/008> Odin v.3 engine (ID:8)..
<ID:0/008> File analysis..
<ID:0/008> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/008> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/008> Removed!!
then the phone went back into the flashing battery symbol... I need to grab the official Bell Samsung Galaxy S .pit file I guess.
Samsung Kies just sat there trying to connect when the phone was in Download Mode...
Okay, so I've downloaded the 0803.pit file... I just need to know which firmware to flash it with under PHONE, PDA, CSC, and DUMP...
Would really appreciate the help!
JH2 firmware for all 3 and flash with correct pit file and click partition (but will wipe all data).

I'm just going to try to find JG9 and upgrade via Samsung Kies... that's if I can find JG9 - these are so hard to find!
Hi Mate,
I just had the same problem - could not reboot from normal recovery, could not reboot from clockworkmod recovery. I had to launch nandroid recovery.
On my unit, it seems that the problem was caused by a conflict between setcpu profiles and the alter minfree settings from ryanza's oclf.
If you have clockworkmod installed and have backed up your rom, you should be able to use nandroid recovery.
I have now changed setcpu not to run on boot, and have not used alter minfree - prob seems to be sorted.
Hope this helps (you or somebody else).
Regards, Paul.

Saw that.. but there's no I-Series... I can't see any firmwares for Samsung Galaxy S there - am I blind?
EDIT: Found it - thanks.
This JH2 on his site is the "updated" version of JH2 that fixes the 3-button recovery as per the Facebook page right?

[Q] Help!! Cant flash phone... Bricked?

I was getting ready to flash my Captivate with new Cognition Froyo from Eclair that I had on there. First I decided to remove the ext4 lagfix I had. To save space on internal SD card. opened up sl4a, hit remove fix. Phone rebooted and stayed on with black screen for an hour. Buttons would light up. So I knew it was on. I figured it was moving folders around and such. So I gave it time. in ext thread - it doesnt say anything about how long should removing take and what should you expect... it would ve been helpful http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765820 But 1 hour seemed too long. I dont have many files on there at all. I pulled the battery. Now when I start the phone its the same story - ATT splash screen comes up, big S shows up that flashes as a normal start up sequence - then it goes to black screen and stays there.
I tried flashing the phone back to stock. Recently formatted my PC, so now I have Win 7 64 bit. Installed the 64 bit drivers. When phone is off and I plug it in - it shows up in Device Manager as unknown device for 30 seconds then disconnects. Also in the properties window it says "drivers are not installed for this device" which then chages to "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)
To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer." If i push the power button - my computer sees the device no problem and says drivers are installed. ADB and modem and such. If I open up cmd window to try adb with phone on or off it says "error: device offline"
How do I fix this...... OMG

Try this:
1. Open the Odin One-Click from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
2. Pull the battery out of the phone, and then replace it
3. Plug the phone into the computer while holding down both volume buttons. It should boot into download mode. When Odin recognizes the phone click start and it should flash back to stock JF6 and you'll be able to start again.
I guess u can restore to stock using odin by getting into dowload mode.
Try searching odin master clear. It will have all the steps in the thread.

Cute story...
Just get into download mode and use Odin, when it goes black it just means the software crashed, not a big deal.
Open Odin
select the files
pull the battery, unplug the usb cable...
put in the battery
hold volume up and down at the same time
plug in the usb cable
keep holding the volume buttons undow you get into download mode
click start in odin
Have you put the phone into download mode yet? Worth the phone off Hold both volumes for 2 sec then plug in the data cable while still holding volumes, hold untill a big yellow sign shows on the screen. If you verify that you have download mode, then you can odin flash.
Ok I was late on this one

Did you put the files in the slots? click on the btton next to the slots and put the correct files there. Odin has to be running before you enter download mode. Put the files in the slots and then hit start. if you are using this http://www.ponack.net/designgears/index.html.
If you are trying to flash stock jsut use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 start Odin enter download mode and this requires you to enter nothing. Just click start.

Start odin, put files in appropriate slots, tick repatriation in case the lagfix ext4 partition remains, then put phone in download mode, then flash

Try this sir.
Unplug usb cable.. and turn off the phone, by pulling the battery if you need ot.
Close ODIN and REOPEN ODIN.
replace the battery HOLD down VOL+&- and plug in the usb cable. the phone should go into download mode. Odin should recognize the phone. At that point hit Start.
Odin acts strangely if it doesn't detect the phone at a certain time.
Always close Odin between attempts.

You should have Odin open before you enter download mode or Odin won't see it. At least that's how I understand it, it never works if the phone is in download mode before Odin is running for me. And I flash all the time. 6 times today.
Ok you have the one click, if it doesn't work if odin is started first, boot into recovery, master clear with odin, pull battery, boot into download, flash.
Use method from my prior post to enter download mode.

The OP appears to be using Odin one click and it is preloaded with JF6, no need to insert anything, but to update to the Cognition 2.2 beta 5.5 you need the stand alone Odin in the .zip you download and insert the files into the slots. Different Odin.
Please update if it works for you or not.
i got this symbol now "phone+!+computer"

Thats how mine worked putting into dowload mode first then start odin otherwise if i start odin first it was always stuck at file analysis. So after putting my phone dwnld mode first then start odin, i flashed my phone.( i know its kind of weird)
Can u turn on ur phone and see if u can use adb commands

How to Flash a Kernel

how come when i d/l a kernel
I897UCKJ3 Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread
Stock
from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
it's a 6mb file or something. How do i use a .tar? I tried opening Odin 1.85. but what do i load it as? PDA, PHONE?
Sincerely,
Semi-confused
like Boog's KJ3 Kernel. I don't have CWM, so i need to flash that kernel to move on with Illuimance. But how do i used ODIN to do that?
Place kernel in PDA and hit start. (MAKE SURE repartition is UNchecked).
i did, but it doesn't do anything to the phone.
Debugging or DL?
ODIN recognizes phone in debugging, but not DL mode for some reason...
repartition unchecked, and the .tar loaded to PDA slot.
i click start, but it just says (.../failed 1)

Put your phone in download mode first.
You have to be on download mode. Try rebooting your computer or using main USB port. Also checking drivers and cable also helps.

U have to be in download mode. Right click on Odin and run it as admin, also if it still fails try a different primary usb port (1st one on a laptop or the ones in the back of pc that connect to the motherboard). Removing sdcard (if u have one) and sim wouldn't hurt if ur still facing issues.
Dang it viny beat me to it
i run "I897UCKJ3 Stock without BL" as admin
i put phone in download mode (hold vol + and -, plugin usb, put in battery)
but nothing happens with ODIN
i changes USB ports, and now it shows up in ODIN. But it is stuck at :

Do U see a yellow indicator on Odin saying something like COM6 or some other number? If not than Odin is not seeing ur phone....high chances of faulty data cable...happened to me....i changed the cable worked like charm
EDIT: Even the above scenerio can be caused by faulty cable
yeah it sees it as COM5.
i plugged the phone in (download screen didn't pop up) but ODIn still recognized it, i hit start, and it's working now (just a blue status bar progressing across the bottom) So i guess it's going to work now? odd...
thanks though. I've had crazy misfortune with this phone so far.
yep... working like a charm. (finally)
Don't get me wrong, we are glad to help you and everyone else, but pls do a lil reading before u start flashing things next time (for your sake). These questions are answered almost if not daily, the first 2 pages usually have ur answers, if not then use the search button.
yes... it is working

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S won't come on after flash

Hello All,
I tried flashing my phone (to I9000XXJVS)
I've only gotten to step 11, which flashes the phone.
In ODIN, I selected PIT, PDA, PHONE and CSC. All 4 had files.
I selected the following options:
Re-Partition, Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time
While flashing, I got the following messages
<ID:0/005> boot.bin
<ID:0/005> Sbl.bin
<ID:0/005> param.lfs
<ID:0/005> factoryfs.rfs
<ID:0/005> dbdata.rfs
<ID:0/005> cache.rfs
<ID:0/005> zImage
<ID:0/005> modem.bin
<ID:0/005> cache.rfs
<ID:0/005> dbdata.rfs
<ID:0/005> Completed..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 1 / failed 0)
<ID:0/005> Removed!!
I switched off the phone and tried to turn it back on.
It won't come one at all. It's not showing anything.
It won't even go into recovery mode.
It won't go into download mode.
Pls help.
Take the battery out for 15 minutes and then replace and see if it powers back on.
If it still wont turn on or go into download mode using the key combination then try using a USB JIG.
What rom did you try flashing?
I'm trying to go to Gingerbread 2.3.5 I9000XXJVS.
I waited 15 mins. Still nothing.
Even when I put in the cable through USB, nothing shows up. Normally it shows that it's charging.
See screenshot of my ODIN configuration while flashing:
Try and plug your phone into the PC and then try the 3 button combo with the cable attached.
No difference. Still won't come on.
I hope the board is not fried.
Very strange...
I cant view the image you posted at the moment to see if files were put in the right places because im on works ancient internet browser but from what you wrote in the OP the flash appears to have gone ok...
Might be worth getting a JIG and trying that. If that doesnt work maybe its time for the unbrickable mod.
REALLY stupid question but you have flashed the right firmware for your device right?
I would give the JIG a try. You can buy one from ebay for like less than £5 GBP or you can throw one together youself.
Did the phone reboot fully after the flash before you turned it back off?
Yes, the flash went OK.
What do you mean by the right firmware? I got the firmware from samfirmware. I actually new to this.
And what's a JIG? How do I put one together?
The phone didn't reboot. The screen was blank but kinda slightly lighted. So I tried powering it up but it didn't so I removed the battery.
I got the JIG. I'll try to build one myself.
I'll let you know if it works.
One more thing: the battery was kinda low when I started this operation.
I'm thinking maybe the battery ran out.
But it's not even charging when I plug it in.
What i mean is do you have an i9000 and not an i9000M or another variant of the i9000 and have tried to flash a firmware from an i9000 onto an i9000M or i9000B for example.
I wish i could see that picture you posted to have a better look.
In the PDA box you should have had a file called PDA or CODE... The modem box should have had MODEM or PHONE... and then CSC should have had CSC...
There should have been a PIT file in the PIT box...
You should have had repartion ticked... auto reboot ticked and auto F reset ( ithink its called that ) ticked.
The update bootloader and other check boxes that are below the 3 i mentioned should all have been unticked.
I use a GT-i9003
in PDA i have CODE...
in PHONE i have MODEM...
in CSC i have GT...
in PIT i have a .pit file
I had all three boxes ticked (Re-Partition, Auto Reboot, F. Reset Time)
All other checkboxes were unchecked.
It looks like you have flashed incompatible firmware onto your device.
You have flashed firmware for the i9000 which wont work on the i9003.
You have gone into the wrong section on Samfirmware.com. There is a seperate section for the i9003.
You can still try the JIG trick but im not sure if that will work either on your device as the hardware may be slightly different and require a different resistor value to force download mode but im not sure about that part...
It looks like you have flashed bootloaders onto your device that wasnt designed for it which could mean a hard brick.
Maybe the unbrickable mod will help you out.
Im not too sure how to help you from this point on im afraid if you cant get download mode working...
Have a good search through google and see if you can find any helpful information.
Other thing is to say you had an update for it and it broke your phone and try and play dumb and see what happens =/.
I hope you can get it sorted mate.

[Q] i9000b won't flash "Odin Xmitdata Fail" device bricked

hi there..
since i bought my phone it never got a firmware update, neither OTA nor a manual one. It came and stayed with android 2.2 with all these years.
Now that i am more into android i decided to use a custom rom, this one = http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012061
But before flashing this rom i had to flash it with an official 2.3 rom, since it was one of the requirements and it still had a 2.2 in it.
I went to samobile, grabbed this rom http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=4340, plus a .PIT that was necessary according to the tutorial i was following.. and on the first attempt i got the error and the device got bricked.. So i tried, and tried, and tried... but i always end up getting the same error within Odin. This one:
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
<ID:0/004> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/004> Initialzation..
<ID:0/004> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/004> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/004> aboot.mbn
<ID:0/004> __Xmit Write fail
<ID:0/004> XmitData Fail..
<ID:0/004> Complete(Write) operation failed.
The device is now bricked, i can't even enter in downloadmode anymore, so i bought a USBJIG to enter in downloadmode and it works, but i still get the same error when trying to flash. I've tried dozens of different roms (of course all of them were made for this device), different versions of Odin, different USB port, Samsung Kies is installed but it is completely closed. I don't know what else to do, i need help... Please help?

you cannot use i9000 ROM's only i9000B ROM's, you need to kill KIES , Open task manager and close these : Kies.exe , KiesTrayAgent.exe, and KiesPDLR.exe
preferably use Odin 1.85 or 3.04
FIRST STEP for ALL Problems:-
Whenever you have a problem with your Phone, power it down, remove battery, remove SIM card and Ext SD card and press and hold your power button for at least 30 seconds to a min, before reinserting battery and trying any solution
First reboot PC after a power cord unplug and also reboot the Phone after a battery pull. Always use a Fresh Odin after any attempt to flash, than make sure you "Uncheck Repartition", If you had checked it or clicked PIT when you are not using one. You should also be running Odin as an Admin and ensure that KIES is not running when using Odin. Most of all, only use Samsung USB cable and not others as they may be incompatible and trying it out on a lap top or another PC ( when it happens repeatedly)
i discovered what was causing the error. it was Windows 8, samsung drivers are not working correctly on it, i don't know if this is a localized or a global problem... my guess is it is a global one
i had Kies installed in windows 8,and all its process were killed before flashing pretty much on all of the time i was trying to flash.
yesteday by pure luck my sister came to my house for a visit, and she had hers notebook with her that btw has windows7, so i decided to try flashing the phone through it, i grabbed it installed samsung drivers and didn't install Kies, surprisingly, for me at least, the flashing went perfectly OK on the first attempt.
after the flash i had one error, "couldn't mount db/data", i googled it and easily fixed it already, but that is another thing for another thread.
thank you for helping

All PC's running any version of windows seem to get USB connection problems at one time or the other But lap tops and notebooks seldom have this problem.
