[Q] CoPilot doesn't show small streets? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently got CoPilot on my phone and tried it out for the first time. I noticed that it did not show any streets at all, automatically putting me on a highway at least 10 streets away. It may be that I'm in Canada but I"m pretty sure their North American map should fully cover Canada..

no, there is a Canada map set, also small canadian cities and town map sets
if you don't have them, it will just put you on the hwy view

Ah found it. For some reason my US. Mexico and Canada map sets are blank so I have to guess each one. Thanks! Is it possible for CoPilot to show both the US and Canada at the same time though? Or do i have to switch it as i cross the border...?

yes just keep both maps in the internal SD
i only keep the States and Provinces i travel to the most
because the full USA map is 1.6 GB (waste of internal SD space) and Canada is around 400 Mb so basically 2 GB is gone if iwanted to keep the entire map for USA+Canada
that's why only saving all the states that you want is easier, and waste less space
you can always keep them on the External SD then manually swap them into the Internal SD when you need them
that's what i do

Using MMC for TomTom instead of SD?

Hi all,
I know that some of you have had great success with using MMC cards instead of SD cards for TomTom on the Xda2i.
Looking at getting one and wondered if there is any information that I/others need to know?
eg. Format (FAT/FAT32, sectors etc)
MMC-Mobile/MMC-Plus/MMC?
any particular brands?
Link to one of the cards I'm looking at:

Thanks in advance!!!

I've just got that card a couple of days ago done a few short trips and hasn't locked up yet i would go for it you won't regret it
Have used one for 3 weeks, works perfectly. Paid a little more for my card. Quite a few people have now tried MMCs and found them to work. I had been at the end of my tether with using tom tom on a SD card, now it's a pleasure to use.
I posted this 10 days ago in "TomTom 5.21 lock up
Very happy.
No lock ups or freezing using Kingston 1GB MMC+ (x48) with TT5.21 and POI Airport, Ferry, Parks Petrol, and speed cameras. Used for over a week around London and the south coast. Even after a phone call, all I had to do was tap the icon at the bottom of the screen, and TT returned without any problems.
MMC from Mouse2HouseDirect.com £20.95 free P&P
Spanners it was your post that prompted me to get an mmc card got the same one as you from mouse2house
Still no lock ups and as you said even after call tomtom just comes back to life

TomTom 5.21 on Alpine

Ah well that was a waste of a day.
Just got a Universal so I tried to set up my Alpine as a GPS unit as an excuse to keep it instead of being made to get rid of it by the other half, a combination of Hard Reset and then Soft Reset when it said "Customising in 3 seconds" I managed to get it with only 0.56MB used of Storage.
As I am using version 562 of the Great-Britain-Map I managed to squeeze the map folder onto the root directory of the Alpine (all 102MB of it), I then installed TomTom into the /Storage folder
Thinking "Ah ha! here we go!" I tried launching TomTom - went through all the "Language", "Voice" etc screens - and then disaster! "No maps found!", try as I might I can't get it to go past that screen. If I put in my SD card with the map on it then it finds the map but I don't want to have to use an SD card!!!
I've wasted 12 hours on this so far today, so if anyone has any bright ideas I'd greatly appreciate them, otherwise I'll bite the bullet and buy an additional card so I can use one for TomTom in the Alpine and one for Storage in the Universal.
G
Isn't it strange! You give up, go get a cup of tea and an idea pops into your head!
I created a folder called "storagecard" in the root directory of the Alpine (it won't let you create one called "storage card".
I moved the map from "/" to "/storagecard" started TomTom and voilla it works!!!
Alpine with no SD card running TomTom 5.21 - will see how it performs, but I now have an excuse for the missus!

Tea is great stuff, its what made this country great!
Just awaiting my delivery of TomTom and teh GPS so reading these thread with interest.
Tom
Interesting approach but I can't help asking why?
You are leaving very little memory for other applications and SD card prices are hardly extortionate these days. Can you get the Speed camera database in 'base' memory also?
Phil
Well I don't want to run any other applications so not too worried about there being a lack of memory and I wanted to find a use for the Alpine so that my wife wouldn't make me throw it out / sell it having just bought the Universal.
If I couldn't make it work then I'd have bought an SD card but it worked so I'm chuffed
Definition of annoying....
The GPS unit arrives - not the software!!!!!
What am I supposed to do this evening, sit and look at it?
Tom
Get VisualGPSCE (free, visualgps.net) and go for a walkabout, have a tinker just to see how the GPS receiver works

copilot 7 and traffic

anyone know how to purchase the traffic updates on copilot 7?
Havent got my phone on me at mo but if I remember rightly you have to purchase them through the app itself. I came across a screen think it was the about screen and it has ticks and crosses for what you have and what you dont have. There was an update button there. Sorry I cant be more specific will look when I am near my phone and let you know later if you cant find it.
cheers desktop i feel i have tried anything and im tearing my hair out now!! im tempted to jump ship to tomtom because this is ridiculous product should be easily useable! when i go to live and connect it doesnt even connect to the internet! have you had any problems with copilot 7?
if i go to the licensing screen it says upgrade and then i put my reg key in and it says i have am incorrect product key!!!! so frustrating!
I have only had the product since yesterday so not had a chance to really use it much yet. From driving round town with it yesterday I definately prefer it to copilot 6. Its easier to follow and warns you of speed cameras without losing the map of where you are. Seemed to take me on better routes than copilot 6 did too.
As for the live bit I havent tried that yet. Most people arent interested when I am going to arrive! Besides they'd just ring me on my other mobile to find out where I am!! lol
Have you managed to upgrade to traffic yet?
no still cant get the traffic to work can you check the steps to upgrade so i can have a go! cheers mate
Just one question about CoPilot Live 6 or 7. Do they support Text 2 Speech? When you are driving does it tell you the names of the streets?

I have been using copiolt for over 3 years on my laptop and after calling them many many times I still can't get live services to work. I expect the same on the PPC version of the software and thats why I choose not to buy it. When talking to customer service they say they get their traffic updates from yahoo traffic and their servers must be down. BS!
My suggestion is to go with Telenav for the 30 day free trial and get the GarminXT Micro sd card when it comes out later this month for $99. I have mine on preorder and hope to get it before my 30 day trial runs out. Telenav works great but you can't navigate to a contact in your phone book. You must enter the address manuly, it uses your 3G or Edge connection constantly while navigating. And it's $10 a month after 30 days or $99 a year. A BIG + is that you can enter a address by voice though.
Another question for anyone who has owned CoPilot before. For the Live Traffic, do you pay annually or is it once after you buy it? Also, when I get the memory card (which is 2GB), if I copy everything to my 8GB microSDHC, will everything work?
I am really considering buying this software as TomTom is giving me a lot of problem with Live Traffic (it is due to the free map that I am using but I don't have space to put in the entire US map yet). Also, the interface looks much nicer and I really need the Text2Speech thing for my navigation as TomTom sometimes confuses me.

You dont have to pay for live service. At least not on the laptop version. But once again I haven't been able to get it to work.
Not working ...

I just got the CoPilot Live 7 software and I've tried everything possible to get it to work and nothing. I copied the 2GB microSD contents over to my 6GB card and executed an autorun and nothing. Tried again and launched the .cab file and nothing. Hooked it up to the laptop and installed the software from there saving it to the storage care ... nothing. I uninstalled between each load attempts and absolutely nothing. I don't want to put it on the phone as it runs from their dang SD card, so why won't it run from mine? Has to be some kind of proprietary thing or a bug. I don't want to load it on the main memory as I'm runing out. I've used CoPilot since version 3 and have always saved it onto the card.
If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciate it.

[Q] Simple, fast, onboard GPS software & maps for the US?

Hi folks.
I'm travelling to the US soon and I could use a hand in finding some reasonable GPS software to buy before my trip. I really only need maps of Boston, MA & Durham, NC, so I am not looking to buy some fullblown expensive map set. Any ideas? No, Google Maps would not apply since I will be roaming, I need something that will have its maps resident in the phone rather than downloaded on the fly.
Thanks for your help, in advance!
Search for Odyseey Mobile. That onboard navigation software can be activated for a single region of the US and a limited time only for not much money!
Regards.

Very little available storage at purchased time

Hey guys, I recently purchased an Incredible S and it seems to be an amazing phone so far. But the problem I noticed was that when I purchased the phone (Bell/virgin Canada), was that only about 2gb of free space was available for me on the sd card while about 1gb was available on internal phone storage. I didn't install anything or even put any music on it so why is the available only 2gb out of 8gb? surely the system applications cant take over 5gb. After putting some music on, I'm down to only 0.92gb.
So my question is, has anyone else experienced something similar? Is it possibly due to the bloat included but even so 5gb being taken by bloatware seems pretty excessive. I know to remove the bloat, root is required but at the same time, I've read that I may not receive OTA updates if I remove it.
Any help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Yes I was in the same situation as you, I think it's really stupid that they sell you a phone with a 8gb sd card that is almost full!
If I recall there is about 4gb that is taken by gps maps and they are located here:
\.data\navigator\data
I'm not entirely sure but I think those files are used by the Bell GPS app that comes with the phone and by the size of it it must be for the whole North America and not just Canada.
Anyways this app never worked for me I guess because my phone was unlocked and I'm using it on the Fido network so I did a backup of those files, formatted the SD card and did a factory data reset.
I gained a lot of space by doing that!
Hope this helps!
yep... gps is the main culprit... if you are not into bell bloatware, just format he sd card..
i am still pissed virgin mobile gives me a phone with bell crapware on it..
does the bell version of the phone has 1700/2100 AWS band for tmous ?
Thanks for the replies, that's probably what I will do (format) after a backup. Still can't believe that gps navigator app is like 5gb and it's not even free as you have to subscribe monthly for a fee of $10 on top of the data charges.
As for the frequencies used, I read the box and it says HSPDA 850/1900/2100
and the gsm is 850/900/1800 /1900 But no 1700.
Anyways really appreciate the quick replies.
The GPS stuff is not for the Bell maps... it's a TomTom derivative for the "Locations" application. It doesn't require any data in order to view the maps... just data to download local data/attractions. The only problem I have with the "Locations" software is the compass... it doesn't point true to the direction that I'm moving in. Called HTC and they stated to do a G-Sensor calibration, which worked with other compass applications, but the Locations still points slightly off of the direction I'm heading. The Google Navigation GPS works better, but does require a data plan.
Oh yeah, and if you still want functionality of the "Locations" software and create some room on your micro SD, then delete the maps that you don't think you'll ever use. I just left the Canada and the US East Coast maps, and deleted the rest... opened up a LOT of space.

Yeah the damn compass in "Locations" is nuts! At first I thought I had a defective unit... but then it works fine in Google Maps. I'm thinking that they might be doing that on purpose so we actually use data for gps
