Any way to retrieve files from Soft-bricked phone? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone wont go past the Samsung Galaxy S splash screen and the keys stay lit but no display. I'm getting ready to Odin restore but would like retrieve the pictures and vids I have on the internal SD card before I wipe it out- Is there a way to do this??
I can get the phone into recovery mode using the 3button/usb cord method so I know I can flash new firmware.
I can get Droid explorer to see the phone when the phone is in recovery mode, but Droid explorer wont show any folders/paths.
Is there another program that can see whats on the internal SD card while its in recovery mode?
Any help greatly appreciated!!

I had the same problem yesterday...weird.
Don't worry odin doesn't over write the entire internal memory so pictures will still be there. Even your internal titanium backups are still there. Texts are gone though. Look at my post called thank you in general forum to see what I did.

Relieved to hear that, going to do it now.

[Q] Anyway to master clear???

Ok, so I have some corrupted files on my internal sd that won't let my phone boot normally and I was wondering if there's any way too completely wipe internal sd without being able to boot far enough for usb to be detected? Another words my phone freezes as soon as it tries to prepare internal sd. Also I can get into download and recovery just fine and I've already OC Jf6 back to stock. there was no lagfix involved so not sure what became corrupted. I know CWR is still on internal sd because I can still access it via 2e recovery reinstall pkgs. Any help greatly appreciated.
Can't you just boot into recovery mode and select format internal SD?

Master Reset Instructions
Following are master reset instructions DM'd to me from USA Galaxy S Twitter support. Copy paste instructions.
This’ll result in the loss of all info not saved on SIM or external SD card. Back up files to PC if you don’t have an external SD.
Sync Contacts & Calendar w Gmail. Make a list of Market apps, as they'll only show up in the list of Downloads the 1st time you log in
Power off phone and remove SIM and microSD (if applicable). Power phone back on. Tap Phone. Dial *2767*3855#
Phone will power off and back on. When fully powered back on, turn off and re-insert card(s). Any questions, let me know!

Yeah! I tried that already. It was a no go however it did remove everything from internal sd but still freezes at boot as soon as it says preparing internal sd in notification bar. Guess I borked it somehow unless someone smarter than me knows a way to get it back. Thanks

FALSE. Do not give him bad information. Odin's master clear only works after your phone has been booted fully.

did you try odin oneclick back to stock?
My suggestion would be to do a oneclick back to stock. It only requires you to be in DL mode not booted up. It will clear your phone, but Im not sure how different that clear is versus the "master clear" option. Either way youll be able to use your fone again if you do the odin oneclick back to stock.

The master clear in odin is the same as formatting your internal sd card. When you flash, everything gets deleted and overwritten except for the internal sd card. However, I don't suspect that his problem is stemming from a corrupt file, but something screwy with the OS. Reflashing will most likely solve his problem. Bite the bullet and do it!
Well people, I've done everything I can think of which consist of everything mentioned in this thread and I'm guessing something went badly wrong when I OC Jf6 back to stock the other day. When I can get it to boot all the way up it starts force closing tw launcher, phone, android, ect. and vibrating and the screen going on and off trying to restart processes so not sure what else to do short of refurbed warranty phone which I despise the idea of because I bought a new phone. But anyway thanks for all the help and if ya think of anything else I'll still have it a few more days.
In the Stock Recovery, try these two options:
Delete All User Data
Delete Cache Data

[Q] Phone won't startup - stuck on GalaxyS screen

Hey there,
I've got this SGS I9000 of a friend and tried to install a different ROM,
I already did it many times to other GS, though this one seems to be a tough one to crack.
For starters, He did not have the download mode, I've fixed it and placed the files on the SD of the phone.
Then I failed the root through Z4 and SOC, so I did it through Odin.
I got into the recovery (after made it 2e and not 3e), did the root and since then the phone won't got through the "Galaxy S GT-I9000 Samsung" screen.
Enters Download Mode, Enters Recovery, Nothing else.
I already did the factory and cache wipe, still nothing new.
I looked over through all the guides with nothing new, I let the phone "rest" on the screen I've mentioned above, not for 10 minutes, for 8 hours. Still, no cigar.
Any suggestions?
Just go to download mode connect it to pc and flash it via odin
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Do you mean flash in the new rom?
Though after I rooted the device it still won't start up, and I havnt backed up the efs yet (through SGS TB).
Is it safe to skip that stage and flashing the rom directly?
I wanted to make sure after I did all the resets the phone still working and all the things I've placed on the SD are still there, and that the settings I've made were still the same.
If i was on your place i would flash it. It is not working so you don't have much to loose except apps, messages and contacts if they are on the phone.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Thats just it, I dont care of contacts messages etc. I already backed em up through KIES.
(Which is closed if I forgot to mention).
The problem is I don't want to lose any important information (thats why I'm eager to backup the efs and check if the root through the recovery worked.)
After I wiped to factory reset wasnt it supposed to start up? (Which I remember from other GS that happened?)
But if you have wiped your device all data is already lost.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
so how do I know if the root worked? The efs Data still supposed to be there (since I realized it's on the SD, and data on SD was not wiped after I saw all the files I placed there still there.)
Any more offers? Anyone?

Need help with internal storage!

Well guys....i think this problem stems from me prematurely removing the usb cord. I Understand that. But here is the other couple of predicaments. lol Ok i'm on ICS Stunna 4.3 ......well after something went wrong i'm unable to "repair" my internal storage. Everything still works smooth....but i can't add things to my internal card. Every time i hook up to the computer it says it needs to scan and fix the card.Well the problem is starts to fix it.....but never does....progress bar never finishes. Tried this on 3 different computers. Nothing. So try to install a different rom....i have some on my internal and external. Always aborts in cmw....never finishes. So on top of all this Stunna has started acting odd. Likely read errors.....but problem is i can't switch roms! lol I have tried everything. I was wondering should i format both cards? But if i do that how can i back everything up if i can't access my card? Any help would be appreciated guys. Hoping i don't have to Odin back to stock.
Cliffs- Internal storage won't repair on any computer-Can't install anything in CMW because of it
I have the exact same problem now, as you do. CWM can't install any .zip files, I can't flash Abyss kernel, so it's just stuck in that end.
I installed ICS Stunner 4.5 coming from GB with full wipe. This happened to me after I tried to copy some files over to external SD Card and it failed, seemed like the phone froze (SOD), so I figured flashing another modem would do the trick (read it in ICS Stunner thread's 1st post). Tried to transfer the file over a cable, but same thing happened. After rebooting I just grabbed it from dropbox and installed the modem successfully. I went ahead to try and fix the mounting problem, so I plug in the cable and it offers me to scan and fix both partitions (internal and external). External card finishes successfully, but not the internal one. And after that I'm in the same situation as OP.
Any ideas anyone?
Enable usb debugging(setting-appl-development)
Connect to pc
Select to copy file to fr computer from notification
You will find separate drive letter for int n ext card
Rt click on int sd card letter n format(you can backup imp data to pc b4 this)
Hope it shud b fixed

Gonna try it now. Have lots of pictures to backup first tho
EDIT: Same thing happens as with scan and fix procedure. It starts and just sits there, nothing happens. When I try to stop "USB Storage in use" it just shows the spinner and hangs in there. Only holding the power button helps solve this. My guess is something in the internal SD card partition is broken... just can't say what or how to fix it.

Same problem^^^^ Not sure what to do about all this
Short story:
Formatting didn't work.
Long story:
Okay, so following the idea to format the internal sd card's partition, I achieved it not through Windows format dialog, but through the half-broken CWM. Both my SD Cards were formated (internal and external) in the process. So since I used the external one for backing up important info I had to use [email protected] UNDELETE to get it back (after booting to ICS). In the process the native SD Card mount service seemed like broken, I had to perform a few hard resets. Hangs seemed to occur whenever I tried writing to one of the cards. I downloaded multi-mount SD card app from Play Store and transfered AbyssKernel's .zip and now when I try to install it from CWM it says
Installing: /sdcard/AbyssNotekernel42RedTouchOriginalLogo.zip

I don't know if this will help or not but give it a try.
Enter into the download mode and flash any stock firmware using PC Odin. This way you don't need to access any of the cards. After flashing stock ROM, try fixing the internal SD again and if it still doesn't fix, send in your note to Samsung for repairs.
Sounds too simple to be working though but worth a shot.

Well for now the phone works, but it's stuck on ICS Stunner. I was thinking to use PC Odin or Mobile ODIN, but what if it doesn't work because the partition is corrupted in some way (as it is now, because CWM can't flash anything).
I'd like to hear more insight before I go the odin-way

I'm downloading an old GB rom myself..
While I am, I can share a thought: I feel that ICS is not yet ready.. at least not for me. Feels nice and fast but buggy USB transfers is a big no-go for me. Also after trying AOSP derived ROM, I decided to wait for a good Samsung edition ICS because all the little tweaks add a good feeling to the experience, I tend to miss them on AOSP or AOKP or w/e

I think my problem is used a .tar instead of .pit.....where can i get the .pit?

Yeah. After quite a time of failed attempts we succeeded. ODIN > Stock GB ROM > ROOT + CMW > Anything you like. No re-partitioning was needed in the process
i have same problem but more complicated. iam on stock GB and its happened after flash bad kernel
the case in detail's :
i flashed wrong kernel on my device previously and now when iam trying to flash another kernel even use ODIN or CWM everything going well and completed but when check i found the old kernel still. i tried many times with same results and no error .
- system can read/write/mount the internal memory but the new pasted files deleted after restart. external card behave normal and i can preform flash using files pasted on it.
- in CWM wipe/format/flash operations running well but no effect on device even restarted to CWM only.
- device has yellow triangle. is it effected?
- the devil kernel stacked in machine is 2.6.35.7-gb4846d2 [email protected] #2 and the build no. is jpkj4
system running normal but cannot keep any changes i do if restarted.
-system rooted and no problem with root
-can access adb
- ODIN behave same CWM, operation work but no change.
can anyone help me guys?
i did repartition the memory useing PIT for note butno change also
thank you all in advance

[Q] Flash CWM via SD update in stock recovery problems T679

Hello all and thank you in advance for any help you can provide. I'll try not to post a wall of text.
In a nutshell the problem I'm having is - I cannot see my zip files in the stock recovery console under the sd update section. In fact it's like the sad card isn't seen at all. I've taken a zip of cwm, placed it on an sd card, inserted the card, boot into recovery and no zip file is seen. What I'd like is any and all details (perhaps a short tutorial with links to the right files) on how to do this.
Why? - well here's where it gets funny. Old android phone of mine I thought to be dead suddenly springs to life (sweet). It has a pattern lock which I don't remember (not sweet). Tried using google account, apparently I used a different one than the one I've been using for years... The short of it is I'd like to get my data off it or at least see what's there. I've heard I can flash cwm through the recovery console, then via cwm, flash a pattern lock reset (in theory). So I figured I'd give it a go. I hope I explained this well. Any help you guys can provide will be awesome. Thanks!
More info on the phone - no it's not setup for debugging mode. No I cannot access it via the PC. So adb and Odin are out. Also I know I can factory reset easily - not looking to do that though. Thanks again!
The stock recovery only sees the "Internal" SD card, so anything you put on your actual SD will not be detected by the recovery. Download a file manager from google play store. I don't remember which one I used in particular, but try Root Browser or ES File Manager. Copy the file from your External SD card into the Internal SD and try again. Hope this helps.
But... you say you don't know the password to the phone. I'm not sure what can be done besides factory reset...

I don't think you can flash cwm with stock recovery. If you aren't able to flash via Odin in download mode you are pretty short on options.

You can actually. That's how I did it. When I got this phone the USB to PC connection never worked, only for charging. I was disappointed that I'd be stuck with stock ROM, but I was able to install CWM via Stock Recovery.

Thanks for confirming. Sucks that the OP can't get it onto the internal, then.
If you google "a creative way to bypass pattern lock on android" the first result will show you where I got the idea from. (sorry, would have put a link here but the site won't let me)
that being said, unless the OP there is pulling our legs, it should be completely possible to access the external SD card from stock recovery as that's how he described he did it. now I don't know if stock recovery is the same on all Samsung android devices, but I would assume it likely is, or is at least close.
I'm almost sure if I had another t679 that I could get into, that I could format the card and have it work on the locked one. not sure if it's worth it to me though since at this point I'm mainly pursuing this for personal knowledge and notoriety lol. BTW thanks to all that provided insight thus far. here's to hoping someone has some additional information for me.

[Q] Hard Brick G900A: How to boot from extSdCard?

Is there a way to boot from the external sdcard without dismantling the phone and finding the strap?
Thanks!
Does the phone power on at all? Can you get into download mode or recovery? Also, everyone is going to want know how did you hard brick it, since your phone might be the first?
How i hard bricked my G900A
Well, i was using EFS Pro to backup my phone.
Everything went fine.
Afterwards i did a system + boot install from G900M so i could have it in my language. Went fine also.
I managed to save all stuff.
Then i reflashed to factory to restore the phone and wanted to check if my backups were fine.
But i forgot to uncheck the all partitions and when it started to flash cache it got stucked. Nothing works anymore.
Now phone is a total brick.
I managed to make a sdcard for recovery, but phone will not boot from the sd.

USB jig maybe?
The Gods Approve This Post, From The Ghost Of Sparta's S5 active.
USB jig should put you in download mode, and you could reflash whatever, or take out the battery, put it back in. Then put your USB cable in and try to go into recovery mode. Try doing it all at the same time, USB cable, and the recovery mode/download mode.
I do not think you are understanding.
I have a jig in my pocket alread for some years, this is NOT the problem.
Supose i did a nand erase, so there is nothing to boot from. Flash or Bios is BLANK, Gone, Kaput!
So i need to boot either from the USB or from the extSd.

No one has made a debrick image yet for this phone, because almost no one has hard bricked. Unless you somehow create a debrick.img image for your sdcard yourself, then you are pretty much out of luck.
It is NOT hard bricked if it powers on, soft brick is what it is. If you can use the jiig and it gets into download mode, you can recover. Looks as if you have a corrupt bootloader, does ODIN see the device at all?
I am having some Soft brick issues. I have tried multiple versions of ODIN and Kies. I have even tried to update from the stock recovery mode in the phone from the exsdcard. nothing seems to work.
Odin only gets so far then tells me it failed. tried flashing stock and others. Bunked up my phone good i think.
Any Help?
is there a firmware update that I can apply from the exsdcard via the recovery mode? I get to the Samsung Galaxy S5 screen then it sits there. even let it sit over night to see if it just needed extra time.
I have been using the USB cable that came with the phone.
Reading through the XDA portal posts, I did see this solution. Not for our S5, but supposedly this method should work for most phones. Worth taking a look at anyway just to find out. Maybe someone could make it work.

I have an att s5 g900a. Towelroot, safestrap, backed up to extSD, DLed the Nuclearfallout rom from the s5 att development forums, moved it to extSD(I moved it twice I think, because I didn't unzip one beforehand.) When I needed to boot from ext sd after wiping all data, I accidentally just "booted system" I believe. I'm stuck in a bootloop, but I can get into recovery and download mode. Admittedly, I'ma n00b. This is my first root, and everything else. In recovery mode, I can get into a bunch of stuff, but nothing does anything. nothing. I can get into DL mode. It just says downloading from source I think. Anyone know how I can even get my backup back on there? If I can learn that, I can try to get some custom roms myself afterward. I hope this is a good place to put this question, because I have been having a hell of a time even searching for my question. It could be that the answers aren't out there yet, but I was thinking maybe I don't know some of the jargon to ask my question correctly. If anyone has any questions, I can try and answer, but I don't know how much help i'll be. Here's a few pieces of info that I thought might help:
It is the ATT G900A, but I paid it in full as a GO phone up front, and switched it to straight talk after my first month.
It's possible that the 2nd Nuclearfallout was still zipped as well.
I made 2 backups with safestrap, and saved them to extSD. They were rooted and unlocked when I made them.(Leads me to think it's possible to get some program, script, or something to boot into my backup.
I literally clicked on every single thing in recovery mode. They all just took me to .__// or whatever it shows at the bottom of each folder stack. If it isn't there, DL mode is my only bet right?
Thanks for the help if you got it folks!!!

The reason Odin doesn't recognize your phone is because you didn't have developer options open and debugging selected. when you boot SafeStrap screen doesn't come up? You don't try to get into recovery by the traditional method that's just stock recovery which won't do you any good

trying this now, hope it works! thanks so much for posting this.
UPDATE: IT WORKS!!! I was afraid my device was too far gone because there was no activity for a bit and it seemed like the USB was connecting and disconnecting over and over again... with the >Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008< listed in the device manager, then BOOM download mode! Thanks again!

Hello! I'm having similar issues...Could you please DETAIL the procedure you used to rescue your device?
I've downloaded the .rar and have the file ready to go but not sure of the steps to "install".
I know how to flash, recover, etc... but not sure what this particular process is.
PLEASE EXPLAIN!
THANK YOU!
