i can use voice recording or voice to text just fine. i can also make phone calls in speaker phone mode just fine. but when i turn speaker phone off the person on the other end can BARELLLLLY hear me
ugh so i've been trying to test it
i left myself some voicemails using the phone
if i talk normal i hear nothing with an occasional click or something. if i take my finger and rub it on the noise canceling mic while talking i can sort of hear myself talking but its really low and garbled sounding, and of course if i switch to speakeprhone then i hear myself fine
this sucks, its obviously some kind of software issue. does the phone not use the secondary mic for noise canceling during speakerphone? that would explain the issue i guess.

The mic on my first N1 was broken so it might be a hardware issue.
its either software or the secondary mic is broke and is causing it to filter out everything, because the main mic works great on speakerphone
this sucks

I'm not sure if anyone else has had this, but this is the first phone i've come across with this issue...
Whenever I'm gaming or something and my phone rings, I instantly pick up and balance it between my ear and my shoulder when i talk (you know, like old school phones when multitasking)...
But whenever i do this people say i sound like I'm talking in a tin can...
Is the second Mic (to drown out background noise) to blame?
make sure that mic isnt blocked. if you put it on your shoulder it will happen
No matter how I hold the phone people complain about this.
People have actually asked me what kind of ****ty phone/reception I have because the audio quality is so bad.
it may be a bad mic. have you always had this? maybe you should call gtc because all the major phone reviewers noted the nexus had one of the best quality calls of any phone. it should not sound that bad
Mine sound great at least. I know this since both me and my brother has a N1. Really good sound quality from my experience.
I've read this same issue before on the Google Android forum. Apparently it has something to do with the secondary mic and how the shoulder conducts sound thereby activating the noise cancellation of your own voice.
I also talk this way and don't have this issue atleast no one complaint.
I am waiting for my warranty replacement due to come in today.
Will report if that fixes it.
Have you guys tried using like a bluetooth headset or wired set to see if it's really the mic issue?

Thats the conclusion i came to... guess i'll start looking into a Bluetooth headset
People keep saying they cannot hear me when I talk to them. It's like I'm speaking through a can, from a distance. My warranty is not valid anymore as the phone is rooted, but I know it's been like this for a while, way before I rooted it. It's like water is stuck in the microphone somehow, or that an internal piece may have been depositioned and blocking the mic.
Is there anything I can do to solve this? Like a 3rd party app that increases the mic volume?
Thanks
Your Warranty is not voided because of Root. If you bootloader is locked you can just revert to stock.
BTW, Z1 have 2 microphones, are you sure you holding in the right position the phone?

So if I relock my boot loader with stock ROM the warranty will still be void?
2 microphones? As in one for calls and one for the camera? The camera mic works just fine but the one for calls seems to be completely broken no matter how I hold my phone. I just had a phone call and when I answered, the person on the other end could not hear me at all. I had to switch to speaker phones so it could use the camera mic instead.
EDIT: Okay, so I just tried to set my own voice mail in order to playback my calling voice. I'm not joking, I sound just like Stephen Hawking except that you can barely hear what I'm saying. It is very robot like and distorted. Also, it seems like there is a voice recognition thing on, which means whenever I stop speak, the mic will turn off to reduce ambient noise. However, this also removes the first word I say when it activates the mic again upon voice recognition. I turned the noise cancelation setting off but no major difference.
And btw, the problem only seems to exist when I'm in a call, not when recording my voice with an app like WhatsApp or any sound recorder from Google Play. Even the built-in voice recorder works fine. Does this have something to do with my carrier?

There is not 1 for camera and 1 for calls. There is 2 microphones, 1 at the bottom of the phone and one on top behind call speaker. They both working with any application to reduce noise in phone calls or recordings. Just search on Google, is not so hard.

As I don't have this problem in any circumstance I cannot tell, play with the settings to understand if you will get better sound quality.

Maybe but I don't know, as the problem persist then I will return the phone to your carrier, let them know the problem and repaired or replaced the phone.
There's already a thread about this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2763013

Hey folks,
I had the problem with the stock ROM and now I have the similar problem with jackeagels 5.5.1 (SM-G800F).
My microphone works sometimes and sometimes doesn't. People I want to call can't hear me. Eventually after a few calls they do. This is a state I don't want to stay in so does one has any idea what the problem could be? A while ago I pulled some dust out of the mic hole (with a needle) but that doesn't seem to be the problem here
Mines always been dust in the hole. Get compressed air can and blast it. Very annoying.
Hey Guys!
I have a similar problem but only when I use the internal mic, the problem does not occur when I use my headset.
Sometimes, the people I'm calling say that they can hear me very quietly.
Mostly, they say that they hear a constant noise or sound like a "bom bom bom" which is in the background. I can't hear this sound myself and as I said it does not occur when the headset is plugged in.
Any help is appreciated!
Regards, Jens
What phone model? What OS?
The main mic is at the bottom, near USB port. Recording a voice note without earphone, of course, works? The mic hole is dirt or blocked somehow?

Thanks for your reply.
It is a G800F with CyanogenMod 13.
I tested the issue after my initial post with the voice recorder in detail.
So the sound is a kind of buzzing like in the early days of mobile phones when you put your phone near a radio and you get an incoming call.
When I record with the voice recorder, then I hear the buzzing. It is stronger when I say something and quiter when I record silence. Then I also made the same test with my headset, and, unfortunately the buzzing also occured. The intensity was bit lower I think but the sound was there.
Unfortunately, I never tested it with the stock rom. Could this problem be related to a software problem? I'm not sure if I backup my CM and install a stock rom for testing...
Thx!
Yeah, the best way to mak sure it's not software is backup and going back to stock. If it still doesn't work then you have a hardware issue almost certainly...
This is the second time it happened, I busted my ass trying to fix it first time I encountered it, and I don't know how I fixed it. Total restart of the phone does not get rid of the issue. Bluetooth and speakerphone mode are not affected. Noise produced during calls, incoming or outgoing, sounds like someone is blowing air with full force into the mic, so the other party hears only noise. Recording with an app over the same mic does not produce the noise, so it seems only calls are affected. Anyone heard of something like this?
This is probably going to be the last drop in the sea of issues that plagues this flag**** phone, so I will be probably looking for something else that does not have Nokia stamped on it.
Hi all!
I noticed that when I use any earphone/headphone with a mic, I can hear my own voice during a call. How can I disable it? I'm quite sure it wasn't like this before, but I don't remember doing anything (and can't find the option either), I find it really annoying.
It's only when I use the caller. If I send an audio using whatsapp, for example, it works okay.
Thanks!!

I have Sony headphones and can't hear any such feedback, have you tried different headphones?
Yes I've tried differents headphones.
It happens when my mouth is close to the mic. If I touch the mic, I can hear the "touch" as well. Maybe it's happening since the last update, but I'm not sure
(maybe it's normal? can you try touching the mic while calling to hear if there is a sound?)

I only have one set of headphones that have a mic built in and no, no feedback at all. In fact I can't hear my voice at all, which is a little odd, but then again they are noise cancelling.
I see.
I'll keep checking the phone options then. I tried with the same headphones in another phone, and it works just normal, so it's something with my device.
Thanks for the help!
