Is there any current way to root the Nexus One on FRG83 (2.2.1) to where you don't have to unlock the bootloader?
Basically looking to be able to flash a ROM without voiding my warranty for good by unlocking the bootloader, since that cannot be restored to factory no matter what.
Any help would be appreciated, I have searched all the N1 forums but haven't seemed to find this out.

Let me know if it works out for you!
I'm not the author but when I stumbled upon this app (since I was only looking for Nexus specific apps), but when I found it I was pretty damned happy that it worked as quickly and painlessly as it did!

Sorry for the delay! Yes, I am running the CyanogenMod nightly and ClockWork Recovery on it !
JWhipple how did you flash the rom on your phone, I have tried this as will but I'm stuck at the ! screen.
The way I tried was to root my phone using this app (which worked)
Downloaded lasted nightly build
rename to update.zip
copy to sdcard
power phone up in bootloader
choose recovery
At this stage all I see is the andriod and a ! , it doesn't seem to flash.
I am on 2.2.0
alos how log did the flash take juat is case I'm not waiting long enough
cheers
I used RomManager to install the ClockWorkRecovery , and then installed using ClockWorkRecovery.
Cheers, just figured that out
Rom booting up now.
Can't want to try some others as well
Did you find the google addon, they don't seem to be on the Cyanogen web site?

Should be able to download it using rommanager as well!
Rom Manager didn't find them either
Right now I'm watching the Cyanogen logo just pop up send a lighting blot around the andriod then pop off (over and over).
I take it this is what you saw? Also been about 5 mnutes now.

I saw that but it didn't take more than a minute for the first boot.
Sorted now.
Process for me was to
root phone using the software on the first page
download the lasted nightly build
copy it to sdcard
download Rom manager
Allow Rom manager to install its recovery image
DO BACKUP
boot into bootloader
start up recovery which started rom manager's recovery
clean all old data (hence why it wasn't booting correctly)
flash rom
I can also confirm it is now possible to run custom roms without unlocking your device (no padlock on bootup screen).
Thanks JWhipple

After the initial jubilation of finally getting Gingerbread on my stock Nexus one, I have come to the conclusion that its a little half baked and setting aside all the little annoyances, the current battery life bug that seems to be affecting some people (myself included) is just terrible.
So my question is, how to I get back to stock 2.2 (or 2.2.2) now that I have 2.3.3 installed.
I don't want to root, or open the boot loader or do anything to invalidate the warranty. Is there a way ?
Thanks, and sorry if this has already been covered somewhere else (could not find it)

Worked for lots of people, don't know if it works for 2.3, it worked for 2.2.
So.. ya might just wanna keep an open mind.
Anyway, some of the links on the page are dead, you might need to dig around for what you need.
Google is your friend

I tried this also (just to see for myself, instead of listening to the rumors), and can confirm it works.
The only comment I would make is that the filename is NOT case sensitive (I got it to work as PASSIMG.zip, passimg.zip, and also combinations like PassImG.zip)
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Passimg method is working? Nice find! I imagine this will be of great help to many people.
Thanks for all the suggestions and help, I will give it a go.
In terms of the most recent version that I can go back to, I assume it has to be a manufacturer shipment ROM or full system image.
The latest release on shipped roms is FRG33 http shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Passion%20(Nexus%20One
I found on the HTC developers site (http developer.htc.com/) FRG83 but the link seems to be broken http dl4.htc.com/RomCode/Source_and_Binaries/signed-passion-img-FRG83_0923.zip
Assuming I can find a copy of FRG83 system image, am I correct in assuming I can also rename this to passimg.zip and downgrade or does it have to be the FRG33 manufacture shipped rom?
ps, sorry i cant post url links hence the http
If it's a shipped image, then yes.
If you look in the zip, and see a bunch of image files, instead of a folder structure, then it will probably work...
Let me know if you find FRG83.
I know someone who would LOVE to find it!

Hi,
I know this question may sound stupid but I have this doubt and I would like to understand better one thing:
Can someone please explain me why it's not possible to restore 2.2 from 2.3.3 using directly a nandroid restore skipping the PASSIMG.zip part?
I'm new to this and I'm still learning some things, but if the nandroid is a backup of the entire system, why can't I just wipe out everything and restore from that file?
Thank you so much for your help!
If you have nandroid - great.
If you flashed stock image - you don't have it anymore, because stock image overwrites your custom recovery, and without unlocked bootloader or option to root, there is no way to restore it.
Thank you so much for the reply
So, just to be sure: since my bootloader is unlocked this means that if I wipe everything, then I can flash a custom recovery and then restore from a nandroid backup without having to flash first another stock ROM and root again, right?
That is correct.
However, keep in mind that rebooting your phone when you soil have the stock ROM will cause the stock recovery to be restored, so as soon as you install your custom recovery, you need to boot into recovery without rebooting the phone...

ROM Manager and CWM do NOT work on Milestone.. Even though it does say it works, it doesn't. OpenRecovery and any mod of it is the only thing that works.
Right now, you have a semi-brick. You need to reflash a stock SBF for your country (to get 3G/data) and then restart the rooting process with the VR, installing OR, etc.
http://and-developers.com/sbf:milestone221
There should really be a sticky for this. It wouldn't be too hard, and should be read by all before they flash a new ROM or ask this question
Oh god! Thanks...
So after 1,5 years i would have to start from scratch! :-(
At least i am not using 3g and at least i can use it as a phone...

Regardless, any custom ROM is better than stock 2.2.1, so I would say it's worth the effort to re-root and flash another custom ROM.

i run my country's SBF through RSD, but i am stuck on the "android" logo at the start of the phone.

OK Solved - had to find a non service SBF....
By the way almost all the links for the sbf's are not valid anymore! It would be a nightmare for someone trying to find old SBF's now...

I got the pre-rooted ics rom on my Vivid. Now, everytime I restart my phone, it goes into this "Android is upgrading" screen and starts "optimizing" applications. IS there any workaround to this?
*EDIT*
I forgot to mention, my phone still boots up after that, but it gets annoying having to sit through that screen every time I restart my phone.
Also, I get no audio from any apps but my music app... No music from videos, games, or any other app... What is with this???
mines does the same thing, and mine wont let me message, just says please wait.....
Same thing here. Mine takes about 30seconds to reboot, so i don't mind. Got used to that years ago, when i had a BB9000.
same here, but only when I choose restart. If I soft boot, power off and manually turn it on it does not do that.

Here you go guys. Just update to the official release. Should solve the problems.
So I'm guessing no root for now?
I think its an ics thing. Was not rooted before updating to ics and my vivid does this. I think its an ics self check deal

No, you can but you have to have the correct recovery.

Hello. I am new to this forum. I did do searching before I came here. I am sort of a noob so sorry for dumb questions. I wanted an MIUI theme on my phone. I tried MiHome but it doesn't change the UI so I want to get the MIUI ROM on my phone but I wasn't sure how. I know you have to root your phone first, but I read somewhere that MIUI isn't compatible with different rooting procedures like CyanogenMod. If thats true, which one is it compatible with? Is it possible for me to get MIUI on my phone? I have an HTC Vivid (of course) with Android ICS 4.0.3. Can anyone provide me with a guide on how to do get MIUI on my phone, preferably a video with a step-by-step description (yes, thats how noobish I am). Also, what are the odds of me rooting my phone if I follow the steps exactly as told? Sorry for a ton of questions. To sum things up, I would like to get MIUI ROM on my phone but have no idea how. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Alright....you need to do ALOT of reading...I only say that so you don't brick your phone...but here's some info as well as how to get miui
It doesn't matter how you root your phone, you can still flash any Rom...you don't even need to be rooted to flash roms
Cyanogenmod is not a rooting method, it is an aosp rom...you cam flash from cyanogen but our device doeant even have a cyanogenmod Rom (well there is one but it was discontinued...for now)
In order to get miui you will need to do the following:
1) unlock bootloader
2) get recovery
3) download miui onto your phone (can't be any miui...has to be one made for our phone...you can find it on rootzwiki.com)
4) flash miui
More detail:
In order to unlock bootloader and get a recovery I suggest using Hansen vivid toolkit that is stickier in the dev section...its the easiest most newb friendly way to unlock bootloader and get a recovery...for the most part all you do is plug in your phone and click a few buttons...here's the toolkit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498003

I guess I'm forced to use my slow PC. Hopefully it won't shut down in the process or else I'll be screwed. :/ Thanks again! I'll let you know if it works out if you want.
Just some ideas , if your pc is slow you can download and of the files you need on your phone then transfer them over to the pc , also if you download the tool kit you shouldn't need anything else but the Rom , if you get s off you will need to do a couple of things , but as mg said do some reading on this subject to kinda get an idea as to what your working with , make sure you kinda understand it so you don't brick your ph. Better safe than sorry .
Good luck and if you have questions there is a lot of good people here and would be glad to help.

Help! I managed to root my phone, which is good. I am currently using WCX. I am not sure how to flash the rom. I tried going to my internal sd card and installing the miui zip file from there. After it reboots my phone, an htc logo loads, then it takes me to some chinese. It has like big chinese words on top in red, then in the middle it has white words, and in between the white words, it loads from 0 to 100 but I have no idea what to do now. It just leaves me stuck on this page! Can anyone help me? Do I need to uninstall the rom then follow a correct process of installation or can I just do the correct process? Also, please don't redirect me to some page, because I did a lot of googling and I found one which would help me, but the site is down. I am sure it isn't a long process. This is what I did:
1. Manually put the zip file into my internal sd card.
2. Rebooted my phone to recovery.
3. Installed the zip file, which flashed the rom.
Is that correct? Can someone please help me! Thanks!

I tried what you said. I am using the All In One tool kit that someone told me to use so I flashed the kernel (boot.img) through that, assuming it is fastboot. I then rebooted my phone to recovery and selected the zip file, it flashed it. I rebooted my phone and it still takes me to that chinese screen. Is there a different MIUI ROM zip file download? With the ROM I used, since I am S-On (which I assume you are too since you did not do the wire jump thing from what I read) after you initially flash the boot.img file using fastboot, you need to flash the rom, which you said you did. Then go back in and reboot to bootloader, and flash the boot.img again. It may have been just specific to the Rom I used, but that is the instructions I followed for mine. I hope you made a nandroid before you flashed Miui in case you ran into these troubles....
Hello. I have unlocked bootloader successfully (it says "unlocked" at screen and also "tampered"). I have all the fastboot/adb software on my windows pc and can communicate with the phone. I flash recovery via fastboot and it is successful...includes a "recovery" option under bootloader options but it just flashes a disclaimer screen and quickly goes back to bootloader screen. Without custom recovery I cannot root this phone which is my goal. I have tried to reflash other recovery images, including cmw and twrp - I believe cmw is on it now but it won't open.
Hoping someone can assist me with this.
Thank you

Reflash whichever recovery you plan to use then remove the battery and put it back in then hold the volume down button and then press and hold the power button at the same time and the phone should then boot to recovery. Make a backup after so you have something to fall back on just in case.

Are you actually holding both buttons down at the same time until the screen turns on? Don't let them go hold them both down until your screen lights up. Then select recovery but if it doesn't work then try below.
Try flashing this version of twrp https://twrp.me/devices/htcdesire510usa32bit.html ... If you're not in the USA I need to know.
Flashing twrp didn't change anything unfortunately. I recently tried re-locking my bootloader and attempted to flash stock images back to the phone but when I press "yes" to the question about voiding the warranty before unlocking the bootloader again...the disclaimer just flashes and the phone won't let it.
Also, I cannot seem to restore it to stock through the menu...nor the bootloader screen.
So now I have "tampered" and "Relocked" banners on top of bootloader screen.
One the upside, the phone itself works fine (I currently only use it for wifi).
Only thing I can think of is I originally flashed a corrupt recovery img (or incompatible version).
Hoping you or someone else has any ideas as to how to get this thing working again. I'd be happy with reverting completly back to stock and starting the process over..

What service provider are you using?
Don't toss the unlock code you got from HTC you're gonna need the very first one you got keep it forever.
I'm using Boost but I think I figured it out. It ended up being a corrupt download of cmw. I actually used an ruu to get back stock and now the whole process went smoothly. Just looking for a rom that fits...got any recommendations in that area?

Not really since everyone has their own tastes but I'd advise you to create a backup in your recovery so you can use it in case something goes wrong. Currently me and a friend are working on CM13/12..

Funny enough I never made a backup before and constantly have to re-locate stock images due to soft bricking. I now am making backups so as not to go through that again.
I have a question perhaps you could answer -- if I install a rom that doesn't include any additional tweaks such as extended personaliation options in settings (transitions, etc, etc.)..is there a mod I can flash to achieve that?

For extended personalizing other than developer options, I'd use Xposed.

The USA model because myself and rb don't have the EU phone to even test anything on it.. We still have a lot of booting problems right now. I'd say if you wanted to help I'd have to ask what you know about building roms from source? Have you done it before?
P.S: There's already a CM-12.1 available for the EU model although it does have some issues.. You should read about it if you want to try it..

It's pretty cool and fun once you get the hang of making things and seeing them function right, and the other thing is... You'll need a pretty decent computer to compile/build with and it'll need to have at least 4GB ram (more is better) and about 50 to 100 GB hard drive space for building your rom plus the CM source code needs to be on your system too...

Well how fast is your internet? By the way.. I'm using a Linux operating system... What are you using? It cannot be done on Windows unless you use a VM.
Hey, I also faced this problem but I find the solution and successfully flash twrp
Hey, I also faced this problem but I find the solution and successfully flash tarp recovery.

Thank you
