[Q] nandroid question - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

Hi everyone,
DISCLAIMER - I have an Eris, and don't know anything about Motorola Droids. I am asking for a friend.
I have a friend with an original Droid. He is on Froyo via OTA, and he is rooted. He is thinking of playing around with ROMs and I told him to make a nandroid backup before he starts, but he doesn't have that option when he boots into recovery.
What is the easiest way for him to get to the point where he can make a nandroid backup (or something similar)?
Thanks in advance

[Q] Losing root...

Hey guys -
I'm a recent convert to Milestone (owned horrible WM devices over the years before just recently switching to Android). Love this community and hope it continues to grow!
A couple of quick questions:
1.) I have a rooted Telus Milestone but want to apply the latest Telus update (I believe it was released Aug. 10th). Now, I've tried doing this OTA but no luck because I'm rooted apparently (I believe I can sill do it via cable)... but if I CAN do this successfully, will I lose root?
2.) If I can't apply the update without un-rooting my phone first, I suppose that this would be my process. Can you tell me if this will work?
1. Make a nandroid backup
2. Un-root the phone
3. Apply the firmware update
4. Root the phone
5. Restore my nandroid backup.
... BUT here's my fear: I'll be restoring my nandroid backup overtop of a different OS / build... and isn't that a recipe for disaster? (I could never do this with WM devices, anyway).
Can anyone tell me if this process will work? Having a hard time finding answers here.
Really appreciate it. Thanks!

When you restore the nandroid backup you'll be back where you were before on the old version of 2.1.
You can get the update by flashing the newest Telus service SBF from here:
http://and-developers.com/sbf:milestone
(scroll way down to the end)
If you need to then root again you'll want to reflash the vulnerable recovery SBF from:
http://android.doshaska.net/rootable
and then apply any of the various update.zip methods for root.
Also you could go for the G.O.T. leaked version of the exact same firmware update:
http://groupoften.wordpress.com/2010/07/07/update-for-france-and-telus-released/
which skips the need to reflash the vulnerable recovery SBF. Then proceed again with a root update.zip.
I might also recommend taking a full Titanium backup before the upgrade in addition to nandroid. If any of the root mods you've made are incompatible with flashing the update via SBF, it'll give you another way to restore your data on the new OS update.

Restoring original ROM?

OK, when I first started into this stuff, I tried to follow all the guidance that has been given before flashing my first ROM. I did a ROM Manager backup of my ROM the way I got it from AT&T. I did not write down my ID # or anything else. I'm assuming the backup has all the information that came with it. My question is how to re-load that original ROM. I've flashed quite a few ROMs now using the Odin one-click to go back to stock and Master Clear and never had a problem. I'm running P9 right now (w/ no problems) and decided to try something else. After seeing some of the threads on here about your original phone IDs, I wanted to try and recover that info by restoring the original backup. I did that straight from P9, but now I just get locked up on the DG boot screens. I'm going to One Click it again but I'm wondering how I can restore back to my original with the backup that I have. Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks
My apolopies if this is already posted somewhere but I can't find it
Your can not restore a 2.1 backup when on a 2.2 rom, if I understand you correctly. In fact I would only restore a backup if you are on the same rom as the backup, and even then you should disable the lag fix prior to restoring
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Not to sure, I tried going to original with nandroid backup after flashing another rom and soft bricked. I actually got stuck at the AT&T screen which on Perc 9 (that what I was running) was the designgears boot screen. Odin 3 one click saved my sanity. if you can go 2.2 to 2.1 I don't know, but I'm not going to try it again. I just one clicked, master cleared, rooted, flashed Axura 2.5 and have been happy ever since. This was my fault, not Perc 9's, let me say that real clear.
Got it
Thanks. I did have to One Click restore to stock, Master Clear, and then restored my original backup. Now I gotta figure out what information I need off of it before I flash a new ROM. Probably a waste of time since I can't imagine going back to AT&T for anything, but thought I would get it since I was waiting to change to P10 soon.

Um.. what information did you want off of it? If you just want your Android ID - there is an app for it on the Market (strangely enough called Android ID) You can then write it down and re-enter it at any time after flashing.

[Q] Motorola Droid

After rooting 2.2.1/FRG83d w/ superoneclick how do make nandroid back up?
Noob here. I agree. I rooted with SuperOneClick and overclocking the SetCPU, now the next step is a Nandroid backup. Anything I've found is actually kinda old and does not relate to 2.2.1/FRG83D.

Well you can but its always best to do one before you install a different rom. Are you planning one installing a different rom?
nandroid back up
After looking and looking, I think rom manager has this built into it. They use clockworkmod recovery to do this, instead of sprecovery. The pro's out there can correct me if I'm wrong and I hope they do!!
^Yes. Download rom manager from the market & flash Clockwork or spr. Boot into your new recovery & make a nandroid backup.

Verizon Tab Rom's/Nandroid/Clockwork???

So for us Verizon (CDMA) tab users, What is our options for flashing a rom? I mean I keep reading but nothing really sticks out here. Can a whole buch of you guys suggest a few roms out here or there that I can flash?
Plus whats the deal with clockwork? I installed bootstrapper and it jacked up my tab!!! Thought I bricked it... I went ahead and did a backup or I think a nandroid backup went into recovery mode hit restore backup and I got stuck. Any one have answer for that? As to why that would happen?
So once again, How many roms do us verizon tab users have to flash? Plus how can we get a working Nandroid backup? Any links provided would also be greatly appreciated.
Thankl You for your time.
So no one here has a Verizon Galaxy Tab running a different rom other than stock?

Newbie Back up question

I just purchased a N7000 and am waiting for delivery. I'm fairly new to Samsung Phones and this will be my first GSM phone.
What is the best way to backup the stock, unrooted image and /EFS? I did do a search and nothing specific to the Note came up and I would have thought the Wiki would have included something but I didn't see it. In the past I would have looked for block devices and just dd the partitions over to my PC. Does this hold true for Samsungs? Is there an easier way to do it from Odin?
I would appreciate any links and insights on starting my Note experience on the right foot.
Thanks

You can do virtually nothing of the above unless your Note is rooted. However, once you get root permission, you can
1. backup your complete system from ClockworkMod Recovery (so-called nandroid backup)
2. backup all the apps you install and their data with Titanium Backup or some other backup app
3. backup EFS with EFS Pro
But you don't actually have to backup your stock Rom at all. There's tons of them here at XDA, and all of them are easily flashable via PC Odin. The only thing you stand to lose if something bad happens is your apps, and that's not the end of the world. You can always reinstall them manually, it's no biggie.
Hope this helps.
Thanks, I new about rooting and nandroid. EFS backup is new to me. How are these posted unrooted stock images being created? Are they just updates or are people pulling them from phones? If they are pulling them from a phones, that's what I am looking to learn how todo.
I use to have Nook Color and backing up without rooting could be done but in that case your could boot into ClockWork from a bootable sdcard. Too bad phone Manufacturers are not so nice to allow booting from an sdcard.
