It still works, but the screen is cracked pretty badly, I'll definitely need to upgrade soon. I loooooved my nexus one, don't know what phone will live up to it. My friend is pushing the vibrant pretty hard, but I'm not a fan of samsung's android phones. So I'm thinking G2 or mytouch 4g. neither the front facing camera or physical keyboard is anything I need, so they're kinda even in my book.
What is important to me is future upgrades, I want to make sure my new phone will last a while and not get screwed over with newest android releases.
also I'm a big fan of custom develpment, I was constantly changing the roms on my nexus one, so hopefully my new phone will have a lot of xda support.
So, fellow Nexus One lovers, if you had to get a new phone, what would it be? What do you guys recommend?
Well, if the Nexus Two rumors are true next week, I would get that. Remember, Google made it easy to root and hack the Nexus One, something that carriers are reluctant to allow with their android phones.
Having said that, I'm inclined to recommend the G2 first and mytouch 4g second.
Bummer...wait till next week to see if there is actually an oficial N2...
good point about the nexus one being easy to be rooted. I did read this about the Nexus Two today, so that might not become an option after all. I suppose I can wait a few weeks, see how developer's tackle the mytouch, see what happens.

if it works other than the screen you could probably fix it. the digitizer (touch screen) and LCD/AMOLED have replacements for sale everywhere on the net.
its the other parts that are hard to find and pretty much require a broken doner phone to replace like the mainboard.
you can find these things on ebay, the upper board is also for sale on ebay everywhere (the board that contains the camera/speaker and some other modules)
The G2 has turned out to be a very difficult phone to root. There is only a temporary method last time i checked. If the Mytouch 4G is more easily rooted, I would recommend going with that phone based on your preference for customization.

yea the touch screen works fine, it's just cracked pretty good. Do you know exactly what part I'd be looking for?
this is the digitizer (the touchscreen which includes the exterior glass panel)
http://cgi.ebay.com/USA-DIGITIZER-T...673812?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item2a0b90ed94
this part is NOT the LCD/AMOLED screen. it is the exterior glass you actually touch. inspect it carfully to make sure the LCD/AMOLED panel is not also cracked.

Definitely wait till Christmas. If anything cool will be announced this year, it'd be Christmas-time.
Wouldn't u hate it if you got MyTouch 4G or w/e, only to cry when some new phone (N2 or Galaxy S2?) are released later on?
cool thanks for everyone's advice. I'm gonna go ahead and try and replace the screen for now, and whenever the next big thing comes out I'll probably pick it up.
quick update, I successfully replaced the digitizer on my phone! It was kinda tricky taking everything apart, but for only $35 it was well worth it! thanks for those who suggested I fix it myself, saved me a ton of money and I get to keep using the best Android phone in existence, the Nexus One!!!

Ive been considering getting an android phone for quite a while so im thinking of the g1 becuase it is cheap and it has a keyboard, what are your guys thoughts, i have a fuze right now.
Don't buy a g1. I've had this phone since november 2008 and I can't wait to get rid of it. You should spend the money and get a better android phone, such as the droid, nexus, or wait for the htc desire. You will definitely have a better android experience with one of these phones. Its just to much hacking you have to do to make a G1 good.

Yeah I would stay away from the Cliq. There are roms for it, but there isn't as much development for it as there is for the G1. You'll find it to be quite boring and it's stuck on 1.5. If it's a choice between the two, get the G1.
Lol... Its pretty funny how everyone is saying the G1 is bad and don't buy it. Give it a month, there will be something then the N1 and everyone's going to say, "Don't buy the N1 its such garbage." G1 is a good phone. It won't take you to the moon, but it's not bad. =] I personally have the myTouch. I honestly wish I would have got G1 for keyboard, though. That's another reason I hate the N1... Yea, it's sexy... but touch screen keyboards have proved to be nothing but trouble for me. Besides misclicking (which you get better at) they usually lag. Sometimes slightly - sometimes horribly. They're NEVER as fast as a physical keyboard, though. They also prove to be trouble for games or things that use a keyboard. Most have full touch screen support, but I personally like to use a keyboard to play a game if it's an option. That's just my opinion.
I bought one off eBay for under $200 and I love it. I don't see how any other phone is better than it right now. It was a five row keyboard, trackball, and with all the custom roms available, it fits every niche that I want.

Beat THAT!
HTC DREAM (people... please call it what it actually IS and not what it has been DE-branded to...) is a very flexible device. Perfectly capable of running the latest builds of android.
The problem that some people are having is that the manufacturer (HTC) has decided to stop supporting it. This is no different than what will happen with the GN1 or other android phones made by HTC.
And the main thing to keep in mind is that this is a PHONE, not a supercomputer. Does it REALLY NEED to be the latest super-duper over powered crazy thing? NO. It really doesn't.
DREAM is very well known, and hacked up the wahzoo. There is virtually nothing that you can't make it do. Right down to being jtag-able.
Fact is simple; if you want maximum flexibility in your phone (more important than peak performance), DREAM is the ticket.

I would say overall that I am very happy with this phone.
Especially with the hacks and mods that I've done to it.
Its fast, stable and looks great.
I am more than happy with this phone, (Especially since I traded a Sidekick LX for it) I haven't been this happy with a phone in a while.
I used to have the HTC Excalibur and coming from Windows Mobile to Android is phenomenal, everything is so simple once you learn and get the hang of it.
So if you have the cash and you are curious just buy it and learn the basics!
Well worth it!
What attracted to me about this phone is that it is able to use the keyboard( hard keyboard is obviously easier to use) to type and gaming. Moreover, the phone is able to be modded and a variety of ROMs that might suit your style to choose from.
I would actually want to buy a second HTC Dream if I could. Seriously, if you really want to utilise your PDA phone properly, the Dream can do it all for you. However, if you really want high end gaming and more sensitive touch screen & proximity sensors to show off, then it's better to get the latest phone. I find that as it is, I am utilising only 50% of what the Dream is capable of. So I have been using it since last year and will continue on until I cannot do certain things that are important for work. Just my 2cents.
Coming from all different kinds of OS's, Sony, WM for many years, and finally the awesome Android OS.
Its hard to compete against it. I like the idea of a quality physical keyboard and screen. There is so much development and quality Rom releases here for our phone.
Devs know this and that is why they stay and keep doing what they do so well for all of us. Themers as well deserve much respect for their hard work and commitment.
Bottom Line: Buy a G1, you'll be hard pressed to find a better android phone at this time.
Anybody going to trade up to the Dell Streak?
I love everything about it (especially now that it's rooted!).
The only drawbacks are the 1.6 version of the OS and that there may be a certain tool-factor when holding that big thing on your face to take a call.
I'm in the US and waiting for the unlocked version to come to this side of the pond the the next month or so.
If it get's FroYo I would be mighty tempted, and T-Mobile 3G bands is a must which I don't think it supports
Ya it's only going to support AT&T. I have T-Mobile, but still thinking of getting an AT&T sim and throwing it in there. Though their new data plans are kind of weird now.. :/
I thought I read that Dell is releasing one with AWS bands as well for T-mobile. That being said, I don't think it can properly be called a "trade up" vis a vis the Nexus One.
I wont. The streak is to big for me. I like something around 3.5-4.0 for the screen size.

How is going to a big tank with Android 1.5 a trade up? No thanks, it's just too big for me, even if it had 2.2. The N1 may not be the absolute bleeding edge hardware design anymore, but it's more than adequate for my purposes, and it's large enough for my purposes.
also guys lets not forget ATT's recent data pricing fiasco.
I dont plan on letting go of my n1 until either some dual core or 1.5ghz processors come out, and i would probably only do it if they had a HW keyboard, otherwise the n1 can/will keep up with all the new phones coming out.

I'd thought about it, but would much prefer a larger tablet device. I'm still waiting for a Snapdragon or Tegra2 powered tablet with a 9-11" screen.
I'll be grabbing one, but won't be leaving my N1 very far away. I suspect I will switch between the two depending on the day. Want something that replaces my smartphone but still pocket portable, and not an addon like a large tablet/iPad, that is very data centric and the Streak seems to fit that perfectly with a 5inch screen. Apparently according to the latest engadget review the Streak gets better battery life than the N1, kind of amazing with the screen difference, maybe cause its 1.6 right now, who knows.
They already have root from Paul at modaco so I would expect that 1.6 will be upgraded real soon, think Dell was already making waves about a 2.x from them within the next month or two as well!
Hopefully its not going to be too much trouble to get one shipped to Canada.
Yeah, same here.
Am staying with my N1 for at LEAST a year.
I managed to hang onto the dying G1 for almost 15 months.
Between learning to root, and flashing all those ROMs, it was always "like a new phone" for me.
And now with the N1, being that it is ALSO a Google released phone, it's like falling in love all over again.
No Streak for me & it's to big. My Nexus One rocks and still feels new
Ill wait for something better and faster more likely a Tegra 2 tablet or smartphone

you my friend are looking at the N700 tablet just like I am aren't you?
The streak is way to massive for my pocket, as cool and impressive as this phone is, it is way to large
*thats what she said?
I'd like to say that I'm not going to get rid of my nexus anytime soon. But, being realistic, I know that's probably not the case. I go through phones pretty quickly. Example: I got a iPhone in 02/09, a G1 in 07/09, a CLIQ in 10/09, and a Nexus in 02/10. I won't get the streak at US launch, but I may get it a little later depending on how it develops. What I'd really like to see though is the streak rom ported to the nexus one.

Very true my friend. I had a Magic before i got my Nexus and was always switching between hero roms and CM roms and it always felt new. Same w my Nexus. I'm just looking for the next thing to have and if enough ppl get behind the Streak then I think it'll be a great (not so little toy)
So what if any issues have you had with your stock nexus1 ? Has rooting helped or hurt?
I love my G1 but it will be time to upgrade soon. Ive just done a wipe and upgrade to cm 5.0.8 DS and like it so far.
Id love to have a rooted N1 but the horror stories with post as recent as today about wifi, trackball & screen issues make me reconsider. So far I don't know of anything else in the same ballpark that will work on Tmobile.
Thanks for any input
G1 rooted with cyanogen 5.0.8 DS

I have not seen any issues with wifi, trackball nor screen. I been the owner of my Nexus One for over 2 months already and I can tell you, This was the best investment ever. Now, with custom ROMs you can improve the functionality of the Phone by a lot. 720p video, faster, wifi n, radio fm maybe? etc...
The N1 has very good hardware, it has things that may be officially unlocked in the near future who knows, though they are already unlocked for custom roms.
Also good to have if you plan to be the base for Android, Since Google will use the N1 as their main device, everything will be optimized for you. (That's my bet, we all saw it with Froyo Demos)
It's fine. 99% of the people wit thing are happy with it, the 1% with problems are understandably vocal. I have two N1's on my account mine (which is rooted) and my girlfriends (which isn't rooted, but has been running the Froyo test ROM for a while). Both work great.
I loved my G1. Probably the phone I loved most when I had it.
The N1 is a better phone in almost every single way ((I was able to change alot of the hardware kb/tb/covers etc on G1)) which is why i loved it.
Nexus One is a leap ahead of every phone prior to April its not even funny. Dont hesitate the N1 >> > and >> over any other phone on Tmobile right now. I love the Mytouch slide but the power ability of N1 are a much better choice.
IMO N1 still has best overall feature set in HW/SW available on the market. Even though that lead has slimmed its still the best you can get right now.
The only problem I have ever heard with the N1 is dust under the screen. But that seems few and far between.
I have had my N1 for about 2 months not and zero issues. I came from an iPhone 3gs (unlocked and jailbroken) and I'll never look back. The N1 is the best phone I have owned. Nothing comes close to it.
they arent problems, just people complaining vocally. the wifi works great, the screen works great, and i've never heard of any trackball issues. go for it you wont regret it.

My exact situation, and thoughts. I actually have my 3GS in the cabinet here at my desk because I thought I might want to switch back and forth, but I haven't touched my 3GS since the N1 showed up in the mail.
That's exact what I'd like in an N1 and get a 8" or less touchpad running android later lol
Now I need to decide on a renewal or pay full price

Ok so after checking the Google page I qualify for an upgrade and with overnight shipping ( which oddly is the same as ground shipping) for $313.38
Does T-mobile charge anything else?
My current plan is the MyFaves 1000 and I guess will be the Even more individual 500 plan. which wont be so bad now that everyone texts rather than calls, and there is wifi calling
issues
The N1 has issues with the voice cutting out frequently (at least, mine does, on Rogers/Fido). Look on the Google support forum to see lots of people complaining about this issue. Maybe T-Mobile units are unaffected?

Why? If you don't like it, return it. If you like it and you have a problem with it, HTC will fix or replace it under warranty.
Honestly, the "reports" on this or that regarding Nexus One deficiencies were broadcasted much louder than any other phone because of the hype surrounding the device. In reality, they are the same few and far between issues you'd find with any other phone on the market.
From someone who used to swap phones as frequently as once every month, I have been using the Nexus One since launch day, had problems with the first AT&T version I bought, and had HTC replace it. Not a problem since.
Where do these reputations come from? the dust issue is the only real one ive seen and htc has fixed the glue problem. its a great phone buy it.

Personally, I would wait for a phone that has a better touch surface. I was really looking for a multi-touch keyboard but was really disappointed to find out that the phone would never be able to do that. Other than that I love it.

1. Swype. I'll never go back.
2. The possibility is there for an app to have it.
Back to topic, I love my N1. I kept it stock for a few months, but I rooted it about a month ago and somehow, the phone is that much better. It's a staple of what I have the freedom to do now. AGPS + nav is phenomenal and comes with the phone. The camera is great. Video can now be shot at 720p (if rooted), and will soon come to Froyo. The hardware is crazy fast, Javascript 2.1 vs 2.2 vs iPad, 40+MFLOPS performance. And, since this is Google's baby, it will be the first to receive updates like Froyo.
The touch surface isn't as bad as people are making it seem, and if you're really up for gaming you can hook a wii-mote to it. Talking on the phone is fine. I occasionally have a weird call, but my friend with an iPhone drops/no-connects calls way more than me.
It has it's quirks. The antenna is located at the bottom of the phone. The reception isn't the best, and T-Mobile doesn't have the strongest signal. I work in a office building/warehouse, and getting 3G in some parts of the first floor (built on a hill, sometimes underground sometimes not) is difficult. A few N1s have had dust under the screen (fixed from what I've heard). Other than that... The phone is excellent.

I'd also suggest not renewing your contract so youccan chose any phone.... any carrier.

That's Funny
Haha, reluctant to go from the G1 to nexus? I guess I kinda understand. I went from my G1 to the Nexus 6 months ago and god damn I haven't thought twice about that decision! Rooting your phone just makes things that much more fun too!
Hi all. I was using my Nexus 6 per usual earlier today, on the home screen when it began to glitch out. I could see what my homescreen was but it was warping with lines, and then the screen went completely green with horizontal lines across the device (pic attached). I called Google, went through the troubleshooting and confirmed it was a hardware issue. Screen is still green in bootloader so definitely not software. I am wondering what could have caused this. Unfortunately I bought mine through Sprint so Google was unable to send me a new one, and Sprint is closed both today and tomorrow, so looks like I have no phone over Christmas. Any help would be appreciated and hopefully Sprint will give a new one without hassle.
Bad news for sure.. Looks like a bad phone and should be no issue getting a replacement.. Now the real issue is will they have one on hand?

Hopefully they do, I called Sprint the first week the Nexus 6 was available from them and went in the same day to buy this one. The vibrator on this one is also very noisy and I read that varies from device to device. Hopefully a replacement will give me better luck on that too.
Well I left it untouched for a few hours and the display works 100% again. Not sure what the problem was and if it'll show itself again. Maybe a bad display connection.
Use it until Friday bro. Then take it in and ask for a new device. It happened once, it will continue and get worse. Be sure to bring pics and tell them you went over troubleshooting with Google etc.
This is why I always keep a backup phone, right now my Note 2 is my backup phone just in case of something like this. Also I know Motorola's are not built as well as Samsung phones, which is why I bought insurance for my N6, I probably would not have bought insurance if I would have bought the Note 4 but I wanted something different and im happy with my N6.
Not sure of this had been a topic of discussion yet, but I love my Nexus 5 so much. I think its the smoothest, best looking, and best sized phone I've owned.
I was sad to see the contract go to Motorola..
I wish that I could just upgrade my nexus 5 hardware and not worry about a new phone for years to come..
I recently cracked my screen, which is like somebody KEYED my new paint-job on my Camaro.. Ugly.. And unfortunately, DIY replacement involves disassembling the ENTIRE phone literally..
My B.S. "insurance" I pay for wants a f*cling $150 deductible to replace the phone, which I can't justify doing at this time, since the digitizer still works perfectly.. (And im mega broke)
[emoji4] HOWEVER, I'm nervous that if I don't just go for it soon enough, there won't be anymore Nexus 5's available to replace it with and I'll be stuck with a Nexus 6 or something... (NO notification LED ?? Come on...)
Anyway.. This is the geekiest thing occupying my mind all week.. None of my friends care, or understand..
Thanks for reading..
