I didnt know where to search for this answer. I had a nexus one and sold it and i wanted another so i just bought one on ebay. What are other advantages to rooting if i have no interest in custom ROMs. i searched and found bits and pieces of an answer to my question but what i am looking for is a consolidated concise answer from you knowledgeable forum members.
Thanks

I would consider pointless and a waste of the warranty. There aren't a lot of mods in the dev section that will work on a stock (non-custom rom), so you wouldn't really be gaining anything there.

Sorry man, just saw that I said would work, what I meant was wouldn't work. A lot of the mods are built from source code that isn't compatible with stock ROMs.
Themes, Trackball Notification colors, Trackball Wake, Updated Launcher... Those are a few I can think of, off the top of my head.
Oh oh, you can install "WaveSecure" as a System application. Thus making it more difficult to remove from the phone. (Can't just go visit the market to remove )
Edit:
Screenshots via ShootMe, N1 Torch (Hey... I did have to use this when my workplace hallways were lacking power... Otherwise I'd consider it a novelty)
Why do you not want a custom ROM? if you are worried about the UI, cyanogen mod is identical to the stock UI (minus a few colour changes), but adds a whole lot more functionality and memory. The only advantage i can see having a rooted phone with stock over cyanogen is that you will still recieve OTA updates.

... of which are usually leaked well beforehand and integrated into a ROM, before the official OTA goes out.
Personally, it was the CyanogenROM that made the risk of rooting worth it. There's plenty of great apps and utils out there that require root, but none (even cumulatively) worth risking $530 to get.
If you're not interested in the ROMs, then take the blue pill.
being able to push the track ball to turn the phone on was plenty reason for me ;o
The decision to root was a hard one for me also, but let me go down the reasons why I loved that I did it.
1) Auto-Rotating launcher. Landscape view is pretty friggin sweet. Plus all my iphone friends get so jelous when I want to show them something so i just flip my phone and my screen rotates 180 degrees. Coolest thing ever...
2) Colored trackball notifications. I don't know about you, but i like that i know what a notification is before i ever take the time to turn the screen on.
3) SetCPU. I made a profile so that when my screen is off, my processor runs slower, thus giving me more battery life.
4) N1 Torch. Turns the N1 into a great flash light.
5) Launcher with shortcuts. I didn't really have a problem with the dots, but having 4 shortcuts to apps there so that they are on every homescreen is very nice.
6) I now have a black notification bar at the top rather than a grey one. This makes the phone alot sexier...
7) Modifcations to HTC_IME. I love the transparent background. This only words if clicker.apk and htc_ime.apk are in the system/app/ folder which you can only modifiy with root access.
8) nandroid backup. very nice.
9) Wake screen on trackball push. Good little shortcut which makes things a little easier.
10) *most important reason* The overall speed of my phone is so much faster... On the stock rom is was plenty fast and i had no complaints, but now it is even more so. The bakedgoods rom is like putting a supercharger in your phone.
The decision to root was a hard one for me, but looking back, I have only 1 regret. Not doing it sooner

Most of the benefits you just mentioned require custom ROMs if I'm not mistaken. The thread only wanna stick with stock ROM. I'm noob btw.

only reason 10 requires a custom rom.
WiFi TETHERING!!!!!!!
apps on the sd. I still ran out if memory installing the apps I use regularly. That is the main reason for me. Enabling all the phones memory was a big reason too. Plus who needs a warranty with insurance?
if you have no interest in custom ROMS, i think it would be a waste of warranty... unless you want to install any apps which require root access (like N1 Torch)... or the several modded/developed system apps that require rw access to the system partition which you can only get using insecure boot... so make ur choice... the N1 stock is great... the N1 cooked... wayyy better than the best!!!
Its in my sig now
I think its funny how people complained that the MT3g, cliq...yadda yadda didnt have enough speed..SO they put in a snapdragon...and people are still not happy. Voiding your warranty is certainly good enough to keep me from rooting my phone for a flashlight, or a trackball color change...Whoop dee doo. When we rooted the mytouch...etc, they had legit reasons. Mutli touch, speed, space saver, cool themes, and tether. They only thing that the nexus doesnt have now is tether. So In due time I will def go back to the rooting field, but not at the cost of voiding my warranty.
But then again the HTC warranty is a joke. I am not sending you my phone and waiting for you to fix a problem that shouldn't have been there in the first place, then wait for you to send it back. Screw that, I would rather pay my deductible and get a refurb.
Contradicting..
But everyone has their own opionon. Oh and just an FYI, from experience HTC can tell if its been rooted

Yes, HTC is smart and like any other company, would like to avoid warranty claims. So I believe they do check every phone to make sure it's not rooted.
I see you point, but I just don't quite agreed with it... but hey, that's my opinion vs. yours and no one's gonna win this battle ;-p).0 But quite frankly, I don't think I'd enjoy my N1 half as much if it was not rooted... I like the stuff Cyanogen ,Enomther, Paul & the other amazing devs have done... I like to fiddle around with the phone... try out new stuff... experiment... the same thing I would do with any linux box... even did it on the Motorola Linux phone I previously had...
So it all boils down to opinion... if you like to fiddle around, root it... if you like the mods, root it... else stick with stock...

Hey, this is my first time posting, I've been browsing a bit since I got my galaxy. I cant really find an answer to what I'm looking for.
I'm not a big fan of samsung's UI on my galaxy, I'd much prefer the Android 2.1 stock that comes on the nexus one... no fancy stuff. Just basic... How would I go abouts doing this? I'm totally new to this, I know I'd have to root my device, after that I'm lost.
Thanks A lot!
Some guys have created a stock Android ROM for the SGS, but it's not fully functional, no camera and no video.
Android can run on many devices (even iPhone and Palm) but the problem are the drivers. If there's no driver, you'll find yourself without camera, wifi, GPS or whatever, and possibly the battery use will be greater.
Yep, there was a vanilla rom but nothing worked, pointless for everyday use.

So what would be your recommendation for a rom? seeing as they're are so many out there.
there are a couple of ROMS in the dev section without the touchwiz launcher
example:
[ROM]Rombie v2a -*I9000XXJPH*- Themed|no TouchWiz|Pre-Rooted|
personally i have never used one so i can't give any feedback on the matter. if you dont want to mess around too much you could always use a launcher like ADWlauncher or LauncherPro, these basically reskin the home screens to a more likeable layout (by many), there is even a home replacement called launcher2 i think, which looks very basic.
I'm looking for something similar. I'm already rooted, unlocked and running ADW, but I just can't cope with Samsung's stock phone and sms apps. They're truly bloody awful.
all i can say is: wait for http://www.cyanogenmod.com/ ...
it's great and it can not take very long any more (i hope)

You can say that again the sms app is a complete fail!!!
I don't mind the dialer so much. but the rest of touchwiz and the widgets is a waste of space..
It seems really slow getting things off the ground. Apart from decdexed and roto who seem to have hit a brick wall, no-one else appears to be developing. To me, this seems really odd considering Samsung claim to have shifted a million plus units. Is there an underlying reason that devs haven't got behind the tab? Is it proving a difficult beast to master?
The whole reason i got the tab was because i assumed the dev community would fully back it. It doesn't seem to be the case which is making me consider jumping ship to a tab which i know will be supported.
What is everyone's thoughts?
I fully appreciate the work Rot and decodexed have done and hope they have more success in the near future.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
For sure there will be devs to focus the mod of ROM. But frankly speaking, after compared with the performance of my galaxy s, I can say only that the original tab rom is good enough even without deodexed an zipaligned.
Of course if there is better ROM, I feel happy too.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
I tend to agree - unlike other phones, stock performance is pretty good and there's little else that I personally need from the Tab.

Dave
I think this device is absolutely perfect for cyanogenmod. With its speed and opensource goodness, this thing will truly hit its stride.

Price of tab
A few of the devs I spoke with pretty much said they would love to work on it, but its a bit pricey and none of them had one. Maybe once a few of them get ahold of one, they will start developing for it.
i agree. Development has been slow. But i kind of figured it would be. Its because of the price of the device. i think the tab is good but not great. I was expecting more, i feel like it needs to be tweaked. i mean the hardware is there its just the software, imo, thats lacking or not keeping up. I multitask like crazy on this thing! I feel like it cant keep up with me which is a shame. I think we should start a mini pot. Meaning everyone donates a couple bucks. We gather the money and buy a tab. then we give the tab to one capable dev who cant afford one. This will kickstart development. Kinda like how google gave nexus' to devs. What you think?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using Tapatalk
I think it is because the device with stock rom is fairly good and since jm6 it is very close to being perfect unlike the sgs who needed so many tweaks and hacks to get to this stage.

What new features or improvements do you imagine in an alternative ROM for the Tab?
If you can't name a few, then what exactly is the point of developing one? As soon as the juicy new features of Gingerbread and maybe even Honeycomb start spreading around a bit, I'm sure a lot of Tab users will see stuff they'd like a piece of. That's when the dev scene will take off.
I would like a modified kernel. One that undervolts and overclocks the processor. I would like to see better memory management. I don't know what they can do there but my RAM is almost always full and I need to kill tasks. Didn't think I would need to do this but I do. Maybe include BFS (I heard its better for multitasking). I would to see a modified modem.bin file. One that allows both 3G and phone. That's about it. I'm on JM6 and it does run well but I have been having a few issues with this tab. Not enough for me to return it or anything close to that. I do love it. But I feel like it has more to offer.
Edit:
Thought of something else. Maybe push the camera to record better videos. Enable video recording from the front facing camera would be nice.

Slow going
I thought for sure would see some great roms by now. This is the reason i picked up the tab. I'm hopeful development will pick up soon!

- integrated openvpn
- quiet hours settings
- fix for current home screen artefacting
- better inbuilt camera
- better music app / music widget
- phone function for all and correct APNs
- smoother scrolling and window transitions
- improved battery life
- inbuilt status and notification bar customizations
- flexible performance settings
- fix for exchange email start up and listing lag
- inbuilt torch
- improved stock browser
Etc. (CM nightlies)
Practically all that has been done for Nexus One, and Nexus was awesome when its came out stock either
From the little info i've seen on the Nexus S it seems that Gingerbread does the Hummingbird justice and it would be nice to see the Tab a bit smoother and better front camera implementation.
All the things that shmigao listed...
I've come to this from a Nexus One like others. The mod community really pushed that little fellow to be one of the best pocketable Android devices that currently exists. Just a bit of that love aimed at the Tab would be awesome . Still early days yet...
i think too that alternatives roms development is too slow...i dont know why especially since sgs and sgt are identical platforms..i have seen insanity rom on an sgs and i cant wait to flash it to my taqb too...please xda-dev an insanity rom 4 my tab!!!
build in cifs would be nice
rom based on 2.3 as we will have to wait few months for Samsung..

Native SIP
This is my first Android device and the only thing I miss so far is native SIP which is promised already in 2.3:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.3-highlights.html#UserFeatures
The most important feature to me is making/taking VoIP calls using bluetooth headset.
So Sipdroid is not doing it properly.

i would be happy once i am able to use my Tab for voice and data with my current Vibrant SIM. I am able to use voice after flashing the Euro Rom but still no data. COME ON SOMEONE PLEASE GET THIS WORKED OUT!!!! that is all i need nothing else....
I could be wrong but I think the main thing that is holding back development on the Tab is the lack of a stable recovery ROM. Just today, Koush from ClockworkMod tweeted that he would be happy to write a custom recovery for the Tab if someone would be willing to send him their Tab for a few days.
I don't have a Tab yet or I would send him mine. Perhaps a better idea would be to buy him one. Then not only would we get a good stable custom recovery but we would reap the benefits of his future development using the before mentioned TAB.
Put me down for $25. Anyone else?

+1 on the list
The tab isn't that expensive, it's practically the same $$$ for an iPad. I agree that the Tab is pretty darn good out of the box, but being an avid XDA- Dev poster and follower for all ROM's on the Droid Incredible, rooting and flashing ROM's is essential in which a simple animation here and there keeps the look and feel of the device feel brand new like is the case with my D-Inc. For a while I was considering switching to a Fascinate, but it only runs Android 2.1 plus other differences, but being rooted and flashing the most up to date version of Android keeps things fresh and helps me wait out for the newest version of the Incredible (Incredible HD).
I have a nook that I auto-nootered for my wife.
Now the in-laws want one and they want me to set it up. They also have an iPad, so that's what they're used to.
Of the current ROM/autonooter options, what is going to give them the best user experience (for market apps, eReader) and will minimize my having to provide tech support.
With my auto-nootered nook (with ADW) I find the user interface a rough ride.
What are the differences between the various ROM options?
Suggestions?
Thanks!
Just my opinion, but a modded Nook is not a good choice for non-tech people. I remember trying to explain all the features my CM7 Nook has to my fatherm, and I realized that he would be totally lost if I just handed it to him. For a mainstream user, I think the stock UI is good enough. A bit laggy, but it's pretty intuitive and user friendly. At most, I'd say a rooted version of the stock ROM, but even then that could bring some issues they may not know how to deal with.

I disagree. I find the stock experience to be quite confusing with multiple docks and the difference between the stock apps and market apps. Plus, I found the stock experience to be an exercise in frustration. It's laggy and very quirky.
I'd throw CM7 with mad murdock's tab mods, plus Dalingrin's OC kernel on there. Then I'd build a custom homescreen experience using apps organizer, desktop visualizer and a custom homescreen launcher like Launcher Pro to categorize essential apps. Reduce the number of homescreens and pre-select apps that they are likely to enjoy.
Here's a neat example of what can be done using those apps to customize.
Show them the basics of how to use the market and avoid getting into any customization details until they ask.
so about 6 months ago my girlfriend got an ipad. We were at her parents house and her father stole it from her and loved it. he loved it. He is not super techy but he embraces the technology and works to figure things out. He really was interested in something like the ipad, but without the cost associated. So i told him about android tablets, but we all knew they were just not "there yet" for a good product. Fast forward a bit, after playing with a friends autonootered nook, i decided to get one. I autonooterd it with 2.12.25(the best at the time) I brought it over to his house and he fell in love with it. 2 days later he had one, and was calling me up to come root it. He never puts the thing down. He really likes the nook app(only available on stock atm.) he uses the web and kindle apps too, thats about it. now that cm7 is out and really stable i would like to upgrade him, but hes really happy with what he has, i dont want to mess with that.
I suggest showing them what you have, and seeing if they like it. you dont need to be as techy as you think to use it. I know people like us like to play and tweak and mess with stuff, but putting the most recent build of cm7 over clocked, and keys mod is a big plus. Give them a quick over view on how to use it. and they are off.
Just like lyam23 with desktop visualizer and some neat icons you could really dumb down, but your adding a layer of complexity that could break and cause experience issues for them. I suggest you set it up as stock as possible put a few icons on the desktop, and say if you want to read a book use this, if you want to go to the web use this. and go from there. really depends on the user tho.
If they are not techy, or at-least embracing technology, you might as well not waste your time.
To be honest, both CM7 and less so nookie froyo, are for power users. It may be easy to install, but maintaining and upgrading can be a hassel for people who don't keep up to date with this forum, or android central. However much of a clusterf*ck the stock rom is, atleast there is no maintaining it; if you can use an android phone the stock rom is manageable. Plus if it ever messes up it just reverts back to stock, and can just be re-rooted. If you do go with rooted-stock, remember to install CWM, as to block OTA updates. We still don't know how the two will interact.

I agree that the stock rooted is a good way to go. but cm7 is stable enough for a standard user i dont think you have to worry about updating it constantly. And if you have to update it, its really quick. If you already have a nook, and your giving it to the inlaws, as long as you see them once and a while, you can quick update it when your there, takes less then 5 min.
in the end no matter which way you go theres shortcomings. it really depends on the user.
Here is rundown for Nooks with normal people:
Stock Rooted
+Can use real Nook software
+Has less rough edges
-No Flash
-Is kinda laggy compared to others
Froyo
-No real plusses over CM7
CM7 + Tablet Tweaks
+Most usable version for normals
+Most responsive version
-Requires your extensive setup
-Lower battery life than stock
-No native Nook app if they care

And what happens when the widgets all of the sudden don't want to load? I've had this happen at least 4-5 times. Since I set them up, I can get my folder links, etc. back up in no time. Minor inconvinience. But to the layman, it's a showstopper. Plus, when you customize something for a friend/relative YOU become the IT support. I believe I'm a pretty nice guy, but I can't say I enjoy troubleshooting on the phone with someone who has limited knowledge in computers/Android. So my advice is save yourself the trouble and leave it stock (maybe rooted).
If they want an android tablet then I would suggest that you place Cynomod 7 Release Candidate 1 on the tablet and leave it at that until Release Candidate 2 or later is available. It is a very stable version, equal or better than most of the android releases out there on commercial releases on other tablets (Visio, Xoom, etc).
You can set up the main screen with shortcuts to those programs he wants to utilize, and show him how to add more (lock the screen for him in the meantime).
If they only want an ereader and care not for the android functionality, then simply leave it stock.
Simple.
I personally would think... given their experience... definately root it... or better yet CM7 it (you'll have to update it frequently right now)... not sure of the feasibility of that for you right now... can update to that down the road when it is "officially released"
HOWEVER... if you decide to go nootered stock... remember that when B&N forces updates it will have to be done again... I would block OTA updates... then after the new OS is nootered or rootable update their nook...
just my opinion... nothing more.

The only problem with leaving it stock, is that you have the difficult prospect of explaining what that toolbar at the bottom is. And why are some apps there, and some in extras? And if you install a home replacement to ease things, well then, why are there two places for apps? Which is the right one? How do I make these toolbars disappear? How come I can't read some text next to checkboxes? Why do some of these settings not work? etc...
My point is, no matter what you do, unless you don't do a thing to their NC, you will be tech support. Might as well make it easy with a decent , stable, and simple user interface.
IMO, this can be accomplished better in CM7 with tab tweaks than any other ROM.
Hey Yall, I'm a longtime cappy user,
Have had a couple already but I have moved on to the Atrix, great phone btw,
But the cappy still holds a special place for me. Anyhow, I would like to get everyone's help in deciding roms for my Dad and Wife, Which I'm giving cappy's to as presents.
Now The main reason is that I would like to keep in touch using the gtalk voice application. (I travel alot and this is very usefull when I'm abroad).
So , in you guys oppinion, what would be the best ROM for people who don't mess with the phones and just want them to work and being able to use 2.3+
Thanks
Gabe
its all about personal preference. cant really have a 3rd party tell em whats best for them. threads like this gets closed quickly.wth that said already, there's stock 2.3.3 KF1 for i897. i think stock is best for non-phonemodders
Yeah, I tend to agree with that stock would be best. But the thing is that I think google talk voice and video capabilities are dependant on it being 2.3.4 or +.I'm not sure,
Basically I would like to know about the roms that aren't as jumpy as other. Because As I Agree with it being a personal user problem, whn my fam have phne problems it usually falls in my lap.
Thanks,
PS: I hope this tread dosen't get closed as fast as you say, I figure it's the Q/A forum, if it cant be posted here, where can it, right?

They are looked down upon. Each developer puts their own time and hard work in to their roms. And having whoever say this one is best and that one sucks is not called for. Because everyone has their own opinions and no two are the same. Same for every rom they have their differences. which people may like and may not like.
Is why i look down on best rom threads.
I respect that.
I have hoped to have worded differently where What I meant was:
The ROM that has been toughly tested, and isn't dependent of users expertise on CPU OC, Configuration Files, Knowledge of ROOT explorer, SQL Browsers, ETC. (under the hood stuff)
Something that doesn't necessarily offer all the configurations options, that might get someone in trouble, that also offers the current latest android subversion.
I guess it's too much of a complicated question for a just simple yes or no.
So I guess I'll just find myself content in have asked.
I ment no harm in my comment but,
If you don't want them messing with so so or having this or that as an option then just leave them on stock like CremeFraiche had said (And maybe with lag fix kernel, if its still around) or teach them (if they are willing to learn) what stuff means, dose, and how it works. They in turn can decide on what they would want to suit them best.
I hope some of this can help you out

I think a great fit for ur Dad and wife would be Cognition 5 v1.00
Based on the leaked I897UCKF1 Gingerbread 2.3.3
MIUI definately!!!!!
Sent from my I897 using XDA Premium App
I would say Apex 8.2 or Serendipity 7
As far as GB ROMs go, I've only tried Apex. I liked it, it has good performance and runs pretty smooth. I haven't gotten around to trying out the other GB ROMs yet so I can't say anything about them. However a rooted ROM might not be the best to go with for them. Both of my parents got Captivates so I could be their goto guy for instruction and debug. I think giving them a Rooted phone is just asking for additional trouble. I think a stock ROM with a nice theme (if you want them to be a little different) is the way to go for them.
