[Q] rooting a g1 for fun - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had this G1 around and I want to root it. I'm currenting using my HD2, so this was sitting in the draw. Now I read alot of the threads on how to root it. First I believe you have to downgrade to RC29 build. The phone had DMD64. That may have been the first mistake. I read on The unlockr site that they had a procedure that may work with DMD64. TOO LATE!
I borrowed a sim card from a family member and went through the steps and had it at the point that the RC29 was in the phone. I never had a chance to finish rooting it, because I had to give back their sim. I used mine, and all I get is that the phone can't connect to the google servers, and E:can't open/cache/recovery/command" is at the top of the screen. I use my HD2 everyday, so the sim is good.
Since I can get into the bootloader and the recovery screen, I would think the phone is noy a brick yet. My sim card works fine in my HD2. I already flashed a custom rom in that.
I read the threads about rooting without a sim card and data plan, I think shouldn't have to, since I have a working sim.
The last thing I did try was the ALL-IN ONE-ROOTING KIT BY Abosutex3.
Is it the radio?
Recovery img not loaded?
Any help would be great. If not, I'll just toss it. I would like to see if I can fix it.
Thanks

Please Help phone wont start up

Fisrt let me start by saying hello to one and all great forum.
Right, to my problem i have had my g1 a month now and love it
have not rooted it yet as i have been reading over and over so that when
i do come to do it i wont f**k it up.
I was downloading and installing app from the market and i think i have installed one that is for a rooted phone only(well thats what the discriptive said) i didnt realise this until i had installed it and so i was testing the apps last nite then turned off my phone as usual when i went to bed, Well so turned it on this morning and it wont load past the Android Screen, i tryed to go into bootloader and itsjust a color screen with serial10 on it.
please tell me i havnt bricked my phone i didnt do anything to it
anyone help me please
You did not brick your phone, if worst comes to worst you can go ahead with the rooting steps and download the dreaimg.nbh from your rc package that is meant for your area and boot it through the bootloader
thanks whats happened to it, the serial 10 has now gone and its just the 4 coulours on screen with some text at top, i havnt taken out the battery i thought i might damage it is it ok to remove it
The multi color screen you are describing is the stock bootloader, I prefer people do not pull the battery out if at all possible, your phone is quite similar to a computer, would you unplug your computer when it crashes
no, your right i wouldnt, so really i have not a clue here what should i do now, i actually need this up and running its my only phone thanks
not bieng lazy either dude, trying to search but like i say i dont kow what i have done wrong so dont bnow solution to seach for
Find a thread on rooting your phone, there you can find your rc, and go from there, go ahead and root your phone while you are at it
not bieng funny mate but i dont want to root my phone until i am confident enought to do it, i upgraded this from 1.0 to 1.5 when i got it can i just not do that again with the 1.5 firmware, thanks
Sure, use the steps to downgrade for rooting, then just leave it go and within the next 72 hours you will get the cupcake ota update, so to recap, downgrade, wait for updates
ok, and thanks alot for the advice mate, i will root it but like i said when i understand exactly what i am doing, cheers
No problem, and thank you for taking your time to learn the system and getting familiar with what needs to be done, instead of rushing in and asking common questions
cheers mate, its the only way to learn, thanks again
sorry mate to bother agian, i just tryed to downgrade with 1.0 and white screen comes up it just says "not allowed" really stuck now
Did you do it in the bootloader(tri color screen) did you put the dreaimg.nbh on the root of your sd card and not change it to update.zip
What part of the world are you in so I can make sure you are using the right rc or it is a possiblity that you might have to make a gold card(which is a pain in the ass.....so I hear)
just realised now have to change it to update.zip
I am in Ireland
P.S. just changed the DREAMIMG-RC7.zip to update.zip and it didnt work
do i change the .NBH to update.zip
Nope,do not change it to update.zip, download rc7, extract the .nbh from inside and put it on the root of your sd, then use it through the bootloader
no. did that mate put the nbh on card into bootloader just said "not allowed" sorry for keeping you up man
does it make any difference that i deleted everything of the memory card by the way
i just thought of something this phone was bought in the U.S.A. would this make a difference when i iupdated it
it was with a U.K. 1.5 O/S
Hmmm, is your sdcard formated to fat32, it's the only filesystem that it will read in the bootloader, walk me through what it is doing
yes i formatted it, then copied the files back onto it that i had backed up, then i deleted them all again, so just putting the nbh onto a blank card
then start up the phone and bootloader, white screen comes up with "checking" then comes up "not allowed"
Hmmm....... I wonder why it is not allowing, maybe you are one of the unlucky ones who need a gold card, or maybe we can get a stock cupcake build to work in the recovery since it will be signed by your provider, let me look around a little bit and see if I can dig anything up

Rogers Dream: Bad radio flashed, bricked?

Bought a new in box white Rogers HTC Dream, from someone who had an extra. Having owned a Dash, TyTN and Diamond before, I knew I wanted to flash a custom ROM, but was not familiar with Android.
I searched Google and came across this: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/howtos/howto_hack_your_android_g1_phone?page=0,0
This turned out to be a really bad guide for me. I found out Rogers phones require special attention AFTER I bricked my phone, and now I'm stuck on the Rogers logo with no access to Fastboot or Recovery Mode. In the linked guide, I flashed the recovery image and booted into Recovery Mode. I then selected the update.zip radio file I downloaded and flashed it, finishing the process with Home+Back to reboot my device, winding up where I am now. Is there any hope for me, since it's just a radio and not an SPL? If not, do you think rogers might do something? I still have the retail box and everything, it just wasn't purchased on my account.
Thanks in advance for any help!
eeesh...Flashing the wrong radio is NEVER good...There might...might be a chance to fix. I'd search the forums for the word "Brick" and see what you can find there is a lot of threads on the subject. I recall reading something about a warranty of sorts offered by HTC, you could look into that as well.
you can TRY this, but im not sure if it will work (like 1% chance maybe, but this guy also had rogers)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=568938
if that doesnt work, then idk how to help you.... rogers have a different radio than the regular g1..i think if you flashed 26I, you maybe ok.. but then again idk
please post your results here back
PS: thats the same article that pissed cyanogen off lol
Thanks for the link, I'd actually already found and tried that myself. I guess you can put that thread to rest now, as I am in the exact same situation. His described steps, including any and all variations I could think of, did nothing for my poor Dream. I'd have to say the OP in that thread did indeed have only a semi-brick with some other extenuating circumstances.
Anyways, I got in contact with the one who sold me the phone and we successfully switched the ownership and IMEI over to my Rogers account, so now the phone is registered to me and I have full warranty. As the phone is older than 30 days old a factory refurbished Dream is in the mail and should arrive sometime next week with a return package for the recently deceased.
This time I'm going to make sure to root/flash the phone properly, with this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4280573#post4280573 (or the linked guide depending on SPL version...)
Once that's done, do I need a specific ROM too? I've read about 3G problems on the Rogers network with some ROM's...
Thanks for your help!

Some questions after flashing HardSPL/cooked ROM (can't unlock, MicroSD troubles)

So, I went through the guide here to install HardSPL and a custom ROM (djkoa's 6.5) on my Tilt, mostly in preparation for wanting to give Android a shot.
It mostly went alright, I hit a snag with CID/SIM unlocking, in that I'm not sure whether it worked or not. The first time it ran it did some thing at least, popped up a program on my Tilt which I allowed to run, but I think there was an error or something, and since then attempts to re-run the unlocker just give me an "incompatible device" error.
But I considered it not worth much worry since I can't get a decent plan for this thing around here anyway. AT&T doesn't sell here, Sprint's too expensive, US cellular doesn't use SIMs, and I'm not sure T-Mobile's 3G is compatible with it anyway, unlocked or not. I just use it as a Wi-fi PDA basically.
What is worrying me though is that somewhere in the process I seem to have broken my 4GB SDHC card. Despite doing my best to follow the instructions in the guide on when to take out and put back the SD card, it got corrupted somehow in the process, with everything showing up as gibberish broken files that couldn't be removed.
I downloaded StorageTools, looking for a way to format the card without a card reader. I ran the Verify first and it did tell me there were errors, but rather than tell it to repair, I figured it be safer to just format the thing and start fresh.
So I formatted it, which took a while, but then when I went to copy over the android files, I got an error telling me the device was unavailable in the middle of copying one of the files.
So I decide to run another verify and repair, to make sure the install went OK. The same scan that had taken me a minute before took over an hour. It didn't throw up any errors, but since then everything I do with the SD card takes for goddamn ever.
Did I break my SD card somehow? Is the ROM/Radio(1.70.19.09) I'm using just have terrible/broken SD support?
How do I fix this, or do I just need to get another card?
OK, I seem to have solved my SD card issue. I think it was just a poor ROM, as I switched to another 6.1 ROM and now it runs fine.
I still have no idea if I successfully unlocked it though, nor do I know how to check.
Read the stickies.

Soft Brick.

Hey guys its been a while since I've even tried to fix my phone cause everyone was saying its dead. But I've been reading stories of people coming back from the G1 logo. So i could really use your help.
Heres the problem, A while back I dropped my old G1 and had to get a new one. Upon looking for the video I used last time to root my phone, I couldn't find it. I searched high and low but to no avail. I figured any video would work as long as it rooted me. So I started up the video. however once i was "done" with it i noticed nothing had changed. So i figured the video was garbage and found another one and started it up. I know, STUPID. Well when i booted my phone after wiping and flashing. It stayed on the G1 logo. I knew the worst had happened. So now i don't know what to do. There have been one or two occasions that I've gotten it to boot loader. So i know i can get there. but what do i do when I get it?
Also, no, I never got to flashing raido's or anything like that. I thought I wasn't rooted so i didn't move on.
I know it was long but I'm getting all the info out there. Please help, I think its possible, and if it is I want my phone back!!!
What were you installing by the way?
EDIT: Made a mistake, thought you were able to boot into recovery.
He does not get to recovery, but into bootloader mode (cam + power on). This is good, as there is a good chance to recover from that.
Try the first section of this guide:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
You have to flash the correct dreamimg.nbh via bootloader. You might need a Goldcard to do so, in certain countries, but lets just hope that is not the case (would be more work...)

The guide on cyanogens wiki is considered dangerous at the optional update to HardSPL

[Q] Chinese Incredible S, want to flash non-Chinese ROM

Hi all, I've searched for help on this and not found anything, please don't crucify me if the solution is extremely simple. I wanted to post my problem in the relevant thread but it wouldn't let me do that so I made a new one.
My girlfriend recently won an Incredible S in a competition here in Shanghai. Great phone but it seems that the Chinese ROM is crippled in some ways - most importantly no Google syncronisation. She can set up her Gmail account in the usual way but it doesn't sync her contacts/calendar/email etc. like her Desire does. It's also got a bunch of Chinese crap that she doesn't need (Weibo, RenRen, etc.).
All I want to do is put a non-Chinese stock Sense ROM on it. I don't really care about custom ROMs as she really likes the Sense UI. It's currently running Gingerbread 2.3.3.
So I downloaded the 2.3.3 Virgin Mobile Australia ROM from this thread (since it seemed to be the most popular and apparently is free from any Virgin Mobile branding or bloatware). I researched and realised that I need to make a gold card. I did this using Goldcard Tool 0.7, and I double-checked with a hex editor that it was correct according to the .IMG I got from the site where you input your CID and get the IMG. Everything seems to check out.
So now I have the gold card in the phone, I connect it with USB debugging on, and put it into mass storage mode (I've tried in charge only mode too, didn't work). I then run the Virgin Mobile RUU file on my Windows 7 PC (RUU_Vivo_Gingerbread_S_Virgin_Mobile_AU_2.12.981.2_R_Radio_20.2803.30.085AU_3805.04.03.12_M_release_185029_signed).
And every time I try, I get the same error: Error [131]: Customer ID error.
I researched this and it seems this is what happens if you try to flash another carrier's ROM to your phone without a gold card. The full error text is "The ROM Update Utility cannot update your Android phone. Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again."
I also note that the Virgin Australia ROM has a lower version number (2.12.981.2) than the ROM that is currently on the phone (2.21.1400.8), could this be the reason why it won't update?
My main question is... what do I do from here to get the Virgin Mobile ROM running on the phone? Is it possible that they've made this phone so you can't flash any other ROM on it, even with a gold card?
Apologies for any noobishness. I have spent hours researching this, but to no avail. I previously rooted my girlfriend's HTC Desire and didn't have too many issues (and learned a lot about Android in the process), but this seems to be kicking my ass as I'm following instructions to the letter and it's still not working.
Any advice? I would really appreciate any help.

This usually indicates a bad goldcard. What size SD card did you make the goldcard with? Also, when you ran the GoldCard tool, did you use the MMC0 or MMC1 value? Either way that is the problem because the IncS actually uses MMC2, so you need to use SimpleGoldCard:

Thank you SO much for replying! I was using MMC1 (MMC0 didn't work). I will try SimpleGoldCard and report back.
I tried with a 2Gb and a 1Gb card (both Sandisk), neither worked.
Thanks again for your help! Hope it works this time.
Well... progress! I think the gold card is working now, because I'm now getting a different error - Error 140, wrong bootloader. Guess it's back to Googling solutions...

That could indeed be due to the fact you are on a 2.21 ROM and you are trying to flash a 2.12 RUU. The HBOOT versions are probably different.

Well, I ended up using revolutionary.io to S-OFF the phone and install ClockworkMod Recovery, then tried the RUU again for good measure... and guess what?
IT'S WORKING
It's currently 30% through the "Updating system" phase, which is further than it's got before. There's also a progress bar under the HTC logo on the phone's screen, which hasn't appeared before.
I'll check back once it's worked or bricked the phone. Thanks again for your help!
VICTORY!
Thanks again for your help, mate. Now got the Virgin Mobile ROM up and running, and all the Google stuff is there. She's really happy with it!
Feel free to close this thread now guys, nothing more to see here.
Thanks again tpbklake!
