Hi rooted my wildfire with unrevoked. Now i would unroot it to update with OTA and, I hope before Xmas, with Froyo.
In Superoneclick thread i read:
"Some devices have a NAND lock. SuperOneClick will only give a Shell root until you remove this lock.
The following phones can use unrevoked to remove this lock:
[...]
- HTC Wildfire (HTC Buzz)"
If i'll install Superoneclick on my Wildfire rooted with unrevoked (and i think with nand unlock), will I be able to unroot in order to install OTA and then re-root?
Froyo still didnt hit WildFire, you can use this tool to download the OTA update manually
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786352
You can unroot by simply installing a corresponding RUU firmware (ie stock). This reflashes recovery, removing root.
However, I would strongly recommend you stayed away from returning to stock; we can't root stock 2.2 yet (not that it's even out yet). If you want to taste Froyo, simply flash Wildpuzzle, Cyanogen or Openfire (Wildpuzzle is closest to stock).
Furthermore, to reply to your post's question directly; there is no point in installing SuperOneClick. If you're already rooted, you can flash ROMs all you like, but without an AUFS kernel or similar, you still can't live write to system. There is no point to adding more root tools, to simply unroot, wait for Froyo, and then to not be able to reroot. If what you're wanting to do is update your Eclair OTA, so you don't have to wipe it but still get the update, then just OTA it in it's current state, and if needs be, unrevoke it again. There's little rigmarole necessary. Personally, the OTA does very little, though as I run custom like most on here, I get the latest Eclair build in my Wildpuzzle.
First off, the Hero I am trying to root is not mine. (as you can tell from my signature)
So, I am not familiar with the Hero's development world.
Rooting Part:
I've found multiple methods of rooting and was wondering which way is the best and most complete way of rooting this phone.
The phone is currently running 2.31.651.7.
I would like it to: Root, S-Off(Permanent Root), Install a recovery, Nand unlock, Busybox, and SuperUser App.
Here is my list:
Manual Rooting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
Unrevoked root method. http://unrevoked.com -> Confirmed with .5 only. (Thanks user7618)
Universal Root App: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747598
z4root app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833954
SuperOneClick: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 -> Confirmed to work on .7 (Thanks Firehawk_1066)
Important parts of rooting that the methods above might not do:
Install a Recovery.
Download "ROM Manager" from the market and install from inside of the app.
Install BusyBox
Download "BusyBox Installer" from the Market.
SuperUser
If you use a "One Click" Method this should be installed automatically.
Alternatively, you can install from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828
Nand Lock
The Sprint HTC Hero is Not Nand Locked, so there is no need to unlock it for /system r/w.
Now for the Un-Rooting part.
If I ever had to take the phone back to sprint, how do you remove root from the phone and set it back to S-On?
Update:
Un-rooting seems to be as simple as running the official RUU file to revert everything back to stock. (Thanks theimpaler747 & user7618)
[Guide] UnRoot using the stock RUU: http://theunlockr.com/-how-to-unroot-the-htc-hero (Thanks theimpaler747)
Unrevoked's Root is Permanent, making it safer to accept OTA's and Immune to RUUs. S-Off with other methods may also be permanent.
The RUU's can be located HERE (!!Make sure you get the correct CDMA Sprint version!!)

Installing a recovery is more of a convince to me, so it's not a major issue if I have to manually install it.
Now for the Un-Rooting part.

Could anyone make any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Unrooting is easy. Flash the sprint 2.1 ruu. As for rooting, I used the unrevoked method on .5. Cake and pie.
Sent from my CDMA Hero. I got some hot Froyo-on-Hero action here!

Does the RUU reset it to S-On?
and do you know if UnrEVOked will work on .7?
btw, love the "Hot Froyo-on-Hero action" signature.
Well, like you, I'm not here for myself but for a friend as well so my expertise isn't the greatest but we both own an EVO and both phones seem the same when it comes to rooting(when doing it manually).
From what I've read the z4root and superoneclick seem to work but I prefer to do phones manually with ADB. So, I would try the first link by tehdarkknight and if you run into to trouble then try a different method.
It won't install a recovery but you seem comfortable flashing a recovery so that is all good. I flashed amon-ra's 1.6.2 recovery for my friend and had no problems.
It also won't install busybox either but that is easy just download titanium backup and hit problems. It will install busybox for you...which you might have already known.
If you have any other questions just ask...

The ruu sets everything back to stock, so if s-on is stock, I would assume it does. I can't say for sure, as I have never unrooted.
Don't know if unrevoked works on .7. I know when I rooted I had to ruu back to .5 to make it work. It's possible, I suppose. Not much help there, huh? Thanks for the sig mention.

I think you are correct on unrooting.
The evo guide basically has you flash the full ruu to unroot if you didn't use unrevoked.

Thank you

Good, now that that's covered.
Which "One"-click method would be most efficient, easiest, and works with .7?
(For other beginners that might find this thread.)

S-OFF is permanent, as described in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=759955
I used superoneclick v1.5.5 on my sprint hero with the same version you have. Worked 100% and it has an unroot button also so you can root and unroot all you want.
I did unroot just to test and it does work.

Wow, since it's that easy to unroot I might use that method.
Thank you for the confirm.
Does superoneclick protect your root from future OTA updates? Like accepting the most recent 2.32.651.2 OTA?
And did unrooting turn the boot loader back to S-On?
I dont know if it protects from OTA updates...I doubt it. I dont have the newest update because of this reason.
I dont know about the boot loader either. My test consisted of unrooting and then trying to use programs which require root like LEDs hack and Rom manager but all of them told me I need root access so to me thats says im unrooted.
After reading a bit more here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682.
SuperOneClick uses the same root exploit as the manual one, just automates it.
What interests me is what process it uses to Unroot.

Since the Hero isn't in the list, it must not be Nand locked?
Can anyone confirm? (Are you able to flash a custom rom or write to /System?)
Got some answers on the SuperOneClick Thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9368111#post9368111
Modified for Q&A Readability.
Q: How would I unroot manually?
A: remove the su binary and the superuser apk.
Q: Is the Sprint HTC Hero Nand Locked?
A: no.
Q: Can I flash a new rom after using the app?
A: yes, you can.
You can also RUU to unroot
Added some updates to the first post.

I can confirm that the ruu does not remove s-off personal experience (Bored).

LOL, nothing like flashing a RUU to get rid of the boredness. xD
But seriously, Did you use Unrevoked to root?
Or do the other root methods also turn S-Off?
They would have to since the root remains though a reboot, right? (Semi-Rhetorical)
I asked on SuperOneClick's thread to see if it does.
You make a good point, thanks for bringing that up.
Hi,
I have a Bell Incredible S (Canada) and I am trying to install an ENG hboot to allow me to flash a new radio for a custom ROM. I should state that this is my first android phone, so I am learning as I go along. My phone is s-off and is rooted on the stock froyo rom. When trying to run the busybox installer, I first get an error message stating "Sorry! Superuser has stopped unexpectedly. Please tell HTC about this problem ", then I get a message stating "root access denied... Busybox installer was not allowed root access. This may be an issue with Superuser, try opening Superuser and making sure that you are allowing us root access."
If it is as simple as allowing root access, how do I go about doing that? I opened up Superuser but don't see anywhere to do this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!
No answers? Im having this same problem except on a Samsung Droid Charge running Gummycharged 1.91, How do I uninstall Busybox and start over the installation? Thats all I want to know!
You need to find the flashable superuser zip. This will give you root access. Then you can install busybox.
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
I thought you don't need eng h-boot to flash radio. I flashed my radio with regular S-off through recovery.

I had to use eng h-boot to flash my radio...
I know there are stickies but I am still unsure of where to start.
My phone is stock ICS + Sense 3.6
I want to root it so I can install root only apps. Further down the road I want to install CM9 or another rom.
I rooted my Desire with unrewoked last year, which was really easy, but for the Incredible I can't figure out where to start.
I am not sure if the stickies apply to ICS as well?
Help please

You are in uncharted waters my friend. ICS/Sense 3.6 introduced a new HBOOT 2.02.0002. Your only hope is that the Downgrade script that uses 'tacoroot' exploit stills works. Here is the link if you want to give it a shot and then report back on your success or failure.

The way I rooted mine was firstly unlock the bootloader via HTCdev, then flashed 4ext recovery via fastboot. I was then able to flash Superuser via recovery and finally installed Busybox from the market

Thanks for this post. I forgot that this was an option because so many people dismiss this option because they don't want HTC knowing that they unlocked their phone.
