Long story short my phone originally came without the three button mode, yet I applied the fix and used to work but now it's gone.
Phone won't boot to either to download or recovery mode. I've tried all possible key configurations yet without any result.
My phone could only boot to the "Galaxy S" screen and stays their or the "Forced upload by key pressing".
Whenever I use Odin it stays at the "SetupConnection.." line.
Your feedback would be highly appreciated whether there is fix or sadly no.
Thanks.
I guess there is no straight answer for this issue....

Boot Loader Update to fix the 3 Button Download and Recovery. It requires Odin to flash.

Since you have had issues at SetupConnection, I would recommend you to stick with the First method because it is the safest. A Failed Bootloader Flash Attempt will Brick the Phone and there would be now way of recovering the phone except for servicing it by Samsung or using the JTAG.
Make the USB Jig and keep it. It would be more than enough to recover from a Bad Flash.

I see what you mean but if your connection is good enough to install a new ROM, wouldn't it automatically also not be good enough to install a new bootloader?

Hi, I have i9000 with unworking 3 keys combo, and i use the adb reboot download turn the phone into 'downlpoad mode', then use Odin3_v1.0.exe to flash new firmware. But it just stop at "DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!", and 30mins nothing happen, then i remove the phone. The phone get Bricks, cant turn on anymore. any one can help me? and can anyone upgrade the phone 3 keys combo disabled??
Offical service
adb reboot DOWNLOAD????
i think it could work.
I'm sorry if this sounds a bit hard, but: There is a million warnings on this forum about flashing if your download mode key combo doesn't work. If you get the phone>!>pc screen, your phone is bricked (because you cannot use the button combo) and your only chance will be to try to return it and hope that the retailer is nice enough to replace it.

Where's fun if can't flash it?
Try:
Boot it to download mode with ADB.
Once in download mode, plug out the phone and start Odin.
Once Odin has started, plug in the phone.
Otherwise Odin will hang.

And if the flash fails for some reason and the phone reboots, you have a bunch of spare parts for the new SGS you buy...
that is how the OP got his phone bricked! did you not read the rest of what he said?
he already did it via this method

sending the phone in to the store for service is the only way to "fix" it, as they will likely have to replace the phone for you, expect 4 weeks wait time
I have a friend with this prob too, I made a ROM backup of my phone and flashed his that way.

Point being that the phone must be plugged in after Odin has been started not before.
Even my phone hangs if it is plugged in before Odin is running.
Hi everyone! I have Captivate(1008 batch) with Phoenix Ultimate firmware. Today I tried to flash it with batch Gingerbread. Seems like my mistake was that I forgot to turn off lagfix. Odin halted. Now I'm getting "phone-!-PC" screen each time I connect phone to PC...
I can not get cappy into download mobe(tried all 3 ways)
Odin doesn't see phone...
Do I have any chaces to repair my phone or it's a brick? Is there a chance that jig will help?
There's a new thread in the dev section about a one click unbrick from that screen. I read that it's just downlad the software, plug in phone and click run.
AdamOutler made this -

Ok, thanks I'll try that! BTW which fimware should I flash if my cappy is back to download mode? As I understand Phoenix formated my phone memory into ext4 filesystem. Is that possible to flash stock Gingerbread on ext4 filesystem?
UPD: Unfortunately software unbrick doesn't help I got "Phone is not connected" message. My PC doesn't see phone at all
The Jig should work, assuming you don't have mixed bootloaders. If you do have mixed bootloaders, JTAG service will be what you need.
If you do manage to get back to download mode, use the JF6 Odin 1-click.
You can get it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Here's another suggestion that I did with a 1008 that I had a while back. open Odin 1 click to prepare for download mode. (make sure it's not one with the three button fix - if you one click from gingerbread to 3 button fix stock, it is a certain hard brick).
Remove battery, count to 10, replace battery.
hold the vol up and vol down buttons at the same time until you see the screen flash. It should flash every 5-7 seconds as long as you continiuosly hold the buttons.
When you see the screen flash, insert usb cord (with it already connected to computer).
This got me to download mode. It mat take a few tries. sometimes it's a challenge to get to DL mode from this screen. This procedure worked on my 1008. Hope it works.
A jig may work too, but it n ever worked for me on the 1008.
Thank you guys. Hope your suggestions will help!
With the phone and PC screen the Jig will work for sure try and make one or u can buy it.
You can also try this, Remove the battery open odin 1 cick and plug the cable to the usb port at the back of the PC and then the phone and now put the battery see if the odin lits up if yes you are done.
I solved the problem(even without jig). So writing my solution, hope this will help someone.
1) I went home to use another PC. Installed Samsung drivers there.
2) I tried different key combos. Vol Up + Vol Down didn't worked but Vol Down + USB entered Download mode.
3) One guy from russian android forum told me to try with Odin 1 click 2.1 stock firmware. Only this version of firmware connected to my soft bricked phone.
One more time thanks everyone for your replies
For future reference.
If your phone turns on (you can see anything on the screen), then you do not have a perminate brick, and a jig will work.
And your filesystem/lagfix does not matter with odin 1click. It resets everything to the way it came, nomater what you came from. (It even works on cm7 witch repartisioned it and used MTD).
I have the same problem as you. I can't get get the one-click unbrick to work (doesn't detect a device). I ordered a jig yesterday, hopefully it comes soon. I have a 1010 though, which I heard had more problems than others.
use a JIG
i made my custom JIG for 60 cents, save my Cappy after a failed cyanogen install.
So awhile ago I made a post about me not being able to get into download mode..
What happened was:
Had apex 7.1 or 7.2
One clicked back to stock
Installed MIUI
Now I cannot get into either download mode or recovery via 3-button method.
Did I do this?
If for whatever reason you decide to use Odin to flash a stock GTI9000 ROM and manually add the kernels and modems using a "pure" 2.2.1 sammy rom. BEWARE.
Researching a lot, it seems the consensus is that the sbl in the 2.2.1 versions of the GTI9000 has *hard* download mode crippled.. Meaning if there is a software screw up YOU CANNOT USE A USB JIG OR ANY OTHER METHOD OF GETTING THE PHONE IN DOWNLOAD MODE!!! To fix it you'll need a new one or JTAG to replace the bootloader.

My phone boots up fine, at&t logo...I just cannot get into recovery or download mode via hard buttons. I can go into a terminal and type reboot recovery and it will. reboot download however does not work. Neither does ADB from my pc.
So is it jtag fix for me? would a JIG work?
just buy a simple 10 dollar usb jig for the captivate off ebay... And it should fix you right up...
Also, im unsure if your MIUI is booting up or whether its stuck in a boot loop... If it is booting up, then DONT INSTALL 3 button combo. (i tried it, and it doesnt work with GB based roms... and i got a hard brick) you may want someone else to verify this though...
And my last option, (also still a guess), in recovery mode, isnt there an option amongst one of the sub-sections to reboot into download mode?
meh... hope i helped
My phone is booting up fine. It all works completely except download and recovery mode.
I cannot find a reboot download in recovery mode.
Also I did flash the three button fix, as it made sense to me to flash it.
My phone still works tho.
So a jig *should* work? Or because I flashed the 3 button recovery is it jtag?
that 3 button warning is for gb based roms athat have gb based bootloaders, miui still uses the old boots so you're ok. if you weren't you would know it cause an improper mixing of bootloaders will cause a brick. a real brick, as in not a damn thing happens.
ive never seen that warning you quoted, however a jig is either fairly cheap to buy and/or easy to make so its definatly worth a try. if it doesnt work then mobiletechvideos.com offers jtag for $50 u.s.
Well this does indeed get my hopes up that a cheap jig will hopefully fix it.
Thanks.
So, the phone worked well with CM9 for a while. Then the guy that owned the device attempted to update it, I'm not sure what went wrong but the fact of the matter is that it kept bootlooping on the CM9 splash screen. Entering into recovery was unresponsive and doing the three button combo to enter into Download Mode was unresponsive.
I followed a guide on here on how to make on my own jig. I successfully made the jig and I am able to enter into Download mode now. However, I am unsure what to do from here. I attempted to use Odin and flash a Corn kernel for the captivate, thinking I'd be able to boot into recovery and then flash a rom from that point. Unfortunately, I am unable to do this. Nothing boots up except the ATT screen now. Maybe there is a failsafe way in getting the phone back to working order?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Have you tried pulling the battery, holding down both volume buttons, and plugging the USB cable in to enter download mode? Once there, try flashing it back to the original state with Odin One-Click or similar. I have bricked and unbricked my phone at least twice, and each time was able to get it to recover by using this method. Hope it works for you. Good luck!
Thanks, it worked. I think I'm on Froyo now, but at least its working. I originally downloaded Odin-one Click but didn't recognize the interface. Thanks!
Ok, so I hard bricked my Captivate, used the Radioshack homemade jig to force it into download mode, and flashed Gingerbread 2.3.6 XXJVU. After further research, I realized I wanted to downgrade to 2.3 for a more effective custom ROM flash, so I flashed a stock Eclair 2.1 ROM using Odin one click (with bootloaders, I'm assuming). The flash was successful as far as Odin was concerned, but now the phone gets stuck in a boot loop for quite some time. If I let the loop run its course, it will eventually load the 2.1 ROM, but the phone will power off after about 5 seconds after I plug either a USB cable OR a charger (the charger is recognized as a USB cord by the phone). I cannot get the phone into recovery or download mode; the 10 plus button combinations do not work, and the jig sends it into the boot loop. I even tried holding the volume down key through the entire boot loop sequence, but it never stops (as opposed to not holding the volume down key, where it boots eventually). I tried reformatting the internal SD card, and I looked into putting it into download mode through ADB, but I do not have it installed and even if I did, I can't get the phone to stay on while connected via USB. The computer even recognizes it through USB until the phone shuts off. Through much research, I've come to the conclusion that I must re-brick my phone somehow from within the stock ROM I have installed. I have no idea if this is even possible or if it's the right solution, but I'm at the end of the line at this point. Any suggestions to help with this?

No such thing as "more effective custom ROM flash". All you need is stock GB with GB bootloaders.
You need to get to Download mode and flash stock GB. Tons of information in this forum, please read it.
I've been browsing these forums for days for information on this subject, and none of the solutions I've found fix my problem.
And where exactly did you read you need to downgrade 2.3.x to 2.1 in order to flash a custom ROM?
Calm down, turn the phone off and leave it on a charger for few hours in order to recharge the battery. Disconnect the charger, remove the battery, remove SIM and SD. Reinstall battery only, hold both volume keys and plug the phone to the PC. See Download mode now?
I didn't read that I needed to downgrade, but the guides I was reading were one click solutions for root and flash for 2.3, and I guess should've ignored them and done it manually. I did a one click on a #1110 phone, which is why it's now acting lame, I assume.
Ha, I am pretty calm. I have a Verizon Galaxy S that I've been using to charge the battery, since my AT&T Captivate won't even charge the battery via USB or straight charger when it's off, so it's pretty full. I've tried every method, including the one you just mentioned, and none of them work to bring me to download mode.

Have ya tried to make a Jig ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9238587&postcount=1
The jig I used to get it from fully bricked state into download mode would put it back into the boot loop. I solved my problem with the adb reboot download command. I managed to activate the command before the phone randomly shut off, as it does when I insert the USB cable. Thanks everyone!
