So my friend has this issue with his Eee 1005HA Netbook, and it's bothering him.
When he minimizes a program, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Powerpoint, and Word, the program "minimize animation" stutters and we could see the program "disappearing" from the top to bottom. Following that, the Desktop Icons appear to be permanently highlighted.
If anyone knows of a fix without having to reload the whole OS, we'd appreciate it.

lol
Had this on my PC when I put XP on it, I'm sure there is a setting to turn of animations in control panel though

The weird thing is switching between windows and launching programs is smooth. It's just minimizing that has the stuttering, and it's weird that the Desktop icons are highlighted.
He's using Ubuntu atm, but he'd rather use XP.

Nope. Everything is smooth with the exception of the minimize animation, which causes the highlighting of the Desktop icons.
It's a small problem, but it does get irritating when he minimizes windows.
He now says the netbook has gotten really slow. He said the registry editor used to launch in seconds, but it now took 8 minutes to launch. A soft-reset didn't do much.

Hm.. Not what I had then.. If it's slow maybe he has caught some sort of Virus , I recomend reinstalling the OS, although I know he doesnt want to

no its slow because the hard drive is probably full..
causing it to lag out..
the icon problem is:
right click the desktop/properties/appearance/advanced
or i suppose if you change the theme that should bring it back to normal..

Hard drive, when I personally checked it was about two-thirds filled -- that's more available space than on my Toshiba laptop, and my laptop's still normal.
We'll see about the icon problem. Like I said, the icons only become permanently highlighted once he minimizes a program; they're normal after a boot.
...
i suggest not to put anything on your hard drive..
there is only a small hard drive in a netbook..
i also suggest you invest into an external hard drive and install everything to it.. eg.. external hd/programs folder/all programs here..
try and keep your C: drive as clean as possable..
just thinking but it might be worth tweaking the page pool of windows on your netbook.. it might make your netbook a lot faster than what it is...

maybe try reinstalling the display drivers. or he has too many programs running and not enough memory.
i don't know why he is still using xp. ive been using 7 since jan 2009.
every xp pc i use i get depressed. even though xp is reliable its 9 years old!!!
...
im still using windows xp..
when i get depressed with it i just re-install it and start again..
im gona hate the day i have to install windows 7, and that will be the day that they stop making games for xp (which will probably be coming sooner than we think)
anyway, thats why i use it, its the most reliable..
and it dont rape my ram like what vista and 7 will do

Is IE unusable on the kaiser with the bug i hear about? I usually use the joypad for scrolling down, is it still the same?
Compared to the Hermes, how fast is the Kaiser at building pages up? On any big pages (eg. ebay) the Hermes really grinds to a snails pace and even when you think it's finished if you scroll down it's still (slowly) inserting images. Sometimes it can take nearly 60secs to finish showing an eBay page.
cheers, John
Which bug?
I use PIE with PIEPlus 2.2 and it works fine.
It is slow though, compared to my old Magician WM2003SE But thats obvious (WM2003SE is not flash based OS, no persistent-memory, thats why faster).
I am waiting Opera Mobile 9, which I am not sure will ever be released!
Duke Nukem Forever
I don't notice any difference with the Hermes. What bug are you talking about exactly?
By the by: opera mini beta 4 runs great on the Kaiser.

Yes it works, but the scrolling gets laggy once you have scrolled down a bit. The page download times are probably on a par with the TyTn. The Touchflo finger scrolling works better (once you get the hang of it).
Opera Mini works faster and scrolls OK.
Mike
Im not having any issues with PIE in general and I'm already getting used to the scroll feature. In fact I picked up my Trinity today and found it annoying when I had to use those fiddly scroll bars.
I wonder how it compares to the experience on the new iPod Touch?
I heard from a friend that the browsing experience on that was very intuitive - but then he is an apple nerd!
My bigger issue with the Tytn II is still the radio used. I am having real problems with the gprs/3G switch and both phone and internet connection have major problems coping when I am in 1 or 2 bars of 3G.
And I am still rarely getting a full 3G signal which was not the probelm with the later radios I have on my Tytn and Trinity.
I will try my Vodafone SIM tomorrow and see if it makes a difference.

this is the bug i was talking/hearing about.
With the extra power and extra chips I was hoping the page building issue would have truly gone, it's my biggest gripe with my Hermes. My other gripe was the poor video playback on my Hermes (which has improved thanks to many WM6 roms), I hear this hasn't improved much either. I think I'll wait until a new ROM or a new device...
Touchflo doesnt work with my installation of Opera Mobile (8.60). Would have thought there would be 20 million threads on it by now so am thinking its just me with the issue.
Is touchflo something that has to be written into third party software of should it would with anything?
Opera Mini is the Java version correct?
New ROM will not fix that because it will be still the same IE.
IE is just slow, that's all.
Try Opera Mini and enjoy the super fast browsing experience.
You will never look back to IE, trust me.

Yes, Opera Mini is a Java application.
But it is running fine and superb.
Here what I got it installed in my device:
1. Install JBED-JAVA_MIDLET_MANAGER.2007.08.02.2.1
Get it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=49222&d=1188897204
2. Use IE and browse to mini.opera.com/beta
And follow the instruction to install it.
Note: Choose "High memory" version.
You are done.
Now, read this article below :
http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-...ed-includes-info-new-java-midlet-manager.html
You will be able to:
1. Make a shortcut to the "Programs" folder
Then using the "Settings->Button" you can change the IE softkey to execute this shortcut.
2. Get rid of the network security warning.
That's it

Phew! Took a bit of work, but worth it
All thats left is for it to be set as the default browser and take links from emails.
Cheers for that buddy.
The shortcut part just doesn't work for me. I use Esmertec and my shortcut based on what I see in the appsdb folder is
#30"\windows\jeodek.exe" -run s3_
Whatever I do it gives me the message - Could not find MIDlet suite s3_
The file in appsdb is s3_suite.jar. Even still, I tried from number s0_ to s3_ to no avail.
Hope somebody can help.

i could only get it to work witn Cloudyfa's JBed, not with the default JMM.
I finally got it to work with Cloudyfa's JBed. For some reason, JBed wasn't installed properly. It wasn't showing up and Remove Programs. I reinstalled it, reinstalled Opera, applied the shortcut/network warning fix, and all is working perfectly.
For other people having this problem, make sure JBed is showing up in the Programs list and in Remove Programs before you install Opera. Seemed to do the trick.
I will be doing all of this tonight, Thanks for the tips.
Same here, I too get the error message could not find suite s0_. The number is correct, but i noticed i dont have any .jar files in the appdb folder... Any ideas?
I also didn't have any .jar files in my appdb folder. I did see some files with s2_ extensions (eg. s2_.jah and _s2.obj) so I changed my suite link to s2_ and it worked. Once I got the link to work, I then copied the selector.utf file from appdb to my PC and ran the Fix.exe editor on it and copied it back to the Kaiser. Works perfectly with no more permission dialog, thanks so much for sharing!
My squence;
1-Install Jbed
2-Install Opera Mini and test to verify it works.
3-Create link in programs folder and test
4-Copy off selector.utf and "fix", copy back and it should all be good, with no more permissions required.
5-Map the program link to a hard key.
6-Crack a cold beverage of choice, life is good
So i backed up all the files in windows startup. Some i knew what they were and some i had no idea like:
-autoshortcut
-htcstartup
-poutlook.
The rest i knew like s2u2 etc..
So i erased them all and restarted kicks a** diamond. Shaves 3 seconds of boot up before i erased. Ver Nice.
And the best part of it all is that the memory shows a solid 60%.
If any of you noticed i belive 60% is the magic number, when the diamond runs on 60% it just feels powerful and quick.
Greetings boys. Hope it helps. Disable all your startups.

That should improve startup time by quite a bit
No Touch flow is still there I mean it still boots on start.
I like touch flow.
After doing it only 1 % more memory free. Suspect this 1 % is not even for the erase but due to the soft reseting.
So no big improvement at all?

I have these in my startup also and noticed them the other day when perusing. However, I would really like to know what they do before disabling (i.e. moving) them. Will I lose some of the device functionality when doing this?
I don't use TF3D by the way but do rely on email which is received via Synchrologic from Notes - obviously, poutlook seems suspiciously like an email "thing").

I have no idea how to program, but I will do my best to give you a little help..
Open this address/URL in your G1 browser..
http://support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1
Press your Menu button, and then touch "Bookmarks" and then "Add Bookmarks" and then "OK"
If using ADP 1.5 (or maybe other versions) you can now Long Press (hold) the "New bookmark" and choose "Add shortcut to Home"
Now you have a direct shortcut to the "Microsoft Knowledge Base" and if you click the icon on your desktop (or the bookmarks within the browser) you can search for any stop code, such as... "0x0000000A" and get your error and how to resolve it. (You can also search for any other windows error or known issue)
Peace,
Rick
wow, thats awesome. i add this to my bookmark. thank you so much.
Theme: To me, a theme just consists of button overlays to match the visual appearance of an OS environment.
Environment: To me, an environment consists of a working realtime customizable desktop, with custom scripts executed on button taps/ holds etc to simulate the useability of a OS environment.
EDIT: Sorry, so theme is the wrong word. I mean't environment in the subject title.
Well, I have searched the entire internet, but can't believe there is nothing that is worth using. Wisbar is lacking in vital functions needed to simulate a working Windows XP environment such as moveable windows which resize and minimize, draggable icons on the desktop, the list goes on. Projects are either no longer available, been suspended or even when they are available they are incompatible. I have tried various vista environments, and while they are somewhat visually similar to the real OS, they just aren't functional enough to use in everyday use. So, would anyone else agree that this is it as far as XP and vista environments go? If not, please reply and post some quality links to show what I haven't searched hard enough for and I'll kiss your boots .
dont you think that draggable resizable windows are a bit redundant on a windows mobile screen?
how many windows can you fit in such a small screen and actually work on them?
if you need that, i think that it is best that you look for a tablet with win7 in the near future
Because mobiles aren't desktops. You use alternative ways to navigate. You no longer focus on displaying as much info as possible, but instead focus on displaying it clearly and nicely.
well, I don't have a 24" screen on my phone, so what you are suggesting would be so tiny on your telephone it is rather impossible to work with neither will it be fingerfriendly for all day use. I already found the wisbar themes to tiny to use smoothly.
Of course a complete simulation will look nice, but for daily use it will be the most annoying thing to work with I guess.
Cheers,
Arnold
Hey thanks for replies. Yea, I guess you're right. It would be a pain to navigate etc. Suppose I'm a windows desktop fanatic who loves customisation too much . I don't know I just don't find windows mobile very customizable. I can't believe how hack-free the WM ROM is. I imagined being able to hack all the system files with resource hacker and change loads of things, but, none of that seems to work and the files are very well embedded into the system and are nothing but read-only.
What I'll try for now is playing around with Wisbar Advance and see if I can make it look similar to my winXP.
Cheers.

From my gatherings, you'll have to be either very lucky or you'll just have to wait until something useable is developed. I'm working on a skin, but it'll only be for the TG01 and I can't program so it won't be amazing. It'll just really be a visual representation of my windows desktop, but I'm not using WAD because as soon as you lauch a WM dedicated program, you leave the windows environment. The only way this will ever work I think is for people to sort of embed the programs within a windows xp window within WAD, but from I have seen, WAD is unable to do this.
By the way, don't you think it's funny how Microsoft have put the start menu at the top of the screen? Seems like it's a way to make it impossible to have a start menu at the bottom of the screen.
I'll use wisbar advance 2 and see what i can come up with and if it's any good, I'll post it up.
P.S. Every single vista theme I have downloaded has not been compaible for my TG01 .

I am totally put off. It only takes for the phone to hang as it's installing or something and that's it, there's no way of getting back onto the homescreen again. Have thought about it, not worth it to be honest, I'll wait for an official release (if ever ones becomes available). As it is, ROM Extractor has buggered up my device it seems . Was using it last night to extract some EXEs and this morning, the start button was totally inoperable. That's literally all I did . Haven't modified the original ROM files in any way; like anyone could anyway,. they're completely hack-proof.

Thanks very much for the link, but unfortunately, I created this thread after trying this out lol. No offense to the guy who created it, it looks nice visually and clearly resembles the windows 7 theme, but it just doesn't have any functionality. Once you load up a program, as always, you're out of the desktop environment and the taskbar at the top becomes visible again. I think, someone really needs to fix this issue and then the problem will be solved (well almost). As for moveable windows and such, I agree it would make navigation quite awkward on the small screen, I guess that's the beauty of windows mobile, but I just wish there was more software available like in the desktop versions.

the other logos were simple yet elegant this one looks like someone sucked at the job of logo making :silly:
Personally, I don't really like it. It is way too simple, I could replicate it in MS Paint. It looks unpolished, just like windows 8 does.
I don't like the way windows is going, and I will stick to Windows 7. Hopefully the software industry will move towards linux. I use too many applications that are Windows only, (or windows and mac only), so going to linux is not so easy.
I dual booted with windows 8, and it just seems unpolished... it feels like I'm using 2 interfaces glued together. All the metro applications seem very simplified, and lack in functionality, and the metro interface seems to get in the way of what I'm trying to do. The fact that metro applications use the ENTIRE screen at one time is extremely annoying.
Example: I wanted to play a folder in the metro music player. I opened the application, and I got into a Xbox music store, and the first thought that came to my mind... "I probably am in the wrong application?". After right clicking, the menu bar appears with 2 or 3 buttons, one of which is 'Open'. I click it. Then a file browser appears, so I browse to the folder I want to play. However, I cannot find any 'play entire folder' functionality, I could only open 1 song. After a little messing around I figured that to get it to play the entire folder, I had to include it in the 'Music' library, and after opening any song, I could use 'Next' to get it to play another one (from the entire library however). The next time I tried to open 'Music', it crashed after pressing the 'Open' button.
Example 2: It seems like I am using 2 interfaces at the same time: there are 2 control panels, 2 versions of internet explorer (opening it from the used-to-be-start-menu, I have no idea if the desktop or metro version will open), 2 music players (windows media player is still there) and so on.
Even things that were easy to do since Windows 1, like turning off the computer, take some time to figure out: to turn off I have to move the mouse in the upper right corner, and a few useless icons appear. Than I need to click 'Settings' (even though there are no actual settings there), and from there I can power off.
After using windows 7, I think the Windows 8 desktop theme looks ugly. The taskbar is a semitransparent rectangle with a solid color, and in my opinion it looks very ugly. Maybe I am too accustomed to the windows 7 aero theme, but I still like some of the Gnome or KDE themes...
Also another thing that Microsoft has been doing for some time is removing useful features, so that grandma could use the computer. They couldn't just put an 'Advanced user' mode in the control panel, they had to REMOVE it. Things like... search. In windows 7, file searching is awful, I need to learn a whole new search language to find what I am looking for, instead of the old 'advanced search' in versions up to XP. They are simply dumbing Windows down so that novice users could use it, and driving medium/advanced users insane.
There may be hope in future versions of windows, but for now I am a 'lost customer' to them. If windows 9 will be just as bad (or dumbed down), I will most likely switch to linux, I will make this sacrifice and try to use alternative software (which in many cases is terrible).
PS: Sorry for the long post, I feel relieved to get this off my chest
