Thanks. Exactly what I couldn't find. Someone should add that link to the i896 wiki.
Whats the difference between the firmware file and ROM file?

The rogers_stock.zip file is a cwm backup image and needs to be restored within the recovery screen upon bootup, the SGH-I896_I896UXJI2 Stock Firmware.zip file on the otherhand seems like it would need to be flashed with odin.

Hey. I've downloaded both, and they both look very similar and neither of them use Odin. Correct me if I'm wrong. They both look like .zip files that need to be booted from recovery.
Anyone?

Actually, it is linked in the wiki and has been for some time.

Thanks everyone for your replies.
Like I mentioned in my first post, the one linked in the Wiki is not stock ROM. From what I've read, it was recommended not to use for the purpose of flashing to stock. Is has also been known to cause problems. I'd rather not test that theory.
I guess what I'm looking for is the Rogers Captivate i896 stock ROM ODIN installer. The one linked in the wiki is the same as one of the two posted in the above link. Neither of them work with Oden, but through recovery.

The SGH-I896_I896UXJI2 Stock Firmware.zip has a tar file inside, those are always flashed with odin. If you look inside the tar file theres a modem and kernel, again both of those are flashed with odin. Im just not sure how you'd flash it with odin, whether you'd just put the tar file in the pda slot or something else.

I'm definitely still new at all this.
I thought Odin files came as .exes?

No that only the one click exe file from designgears, the regular odin app is simply a tool that flashes the kernel/modem/pit/csc and some other files to the phone.

I need to get my i896 to the stock rom as well and when i was reading this thread, it seems like it just died down.
So the files posted need to be flashed with odin right?
i thought you need a .tar file and a .pit file, not a .dll file which was included in the .zip file.
Can someone clarify please?

Any help would be greately appreciated.

i think i figured it out... :/
sooo when you open the .zip file theres gunna be .tar and a .dll file.
I extracted the .tar file and used it in odin along with the .pit file from the flashable cognition rom and tried to flash the rom onto my phone.
Then it work!
the only problem is that when i boot i get an att splash screen, then it goes to the sgs, then rogers splash screen

There's no authentic rogers flash so this is the best you're going to get.

Yes, same for me! I I used the PIT file from Odin and the SGH-I896_I896UXJI2 Firmware and I'm back to stock after a software brick... Nice!
The only weirdness is that it doesn't have Rogers APN. Do you?

You should be able to add the APN.
Under the APN settings, just add below:
Name: Rogers
APN: internet.com
Username: wapuser1
Password: wap
MCC: 302 (should already be filled in)
MNC: either 720 or 72 depending on your SIM card (should already be filled in)
Type: Text and MMS.
Leave all other settings blank.
Worked like a charm for me.

Problem with return

I'm having to return my Galaxy S for a replacement, however before i realised there was a hardware issue, i flashed it.
Since i'm in Australia, on Optus, there isn't a leaked DTJF3 image. So i can't just flash back to the original.
Is there a way using busybox, or an update.zip (I create and sign update.zips, Have done a little) to update the model numbers to at least look like i haven't been messing with it. Best to be safe rather than have them not honor the warranty because of a flashed update.
I ask in here as this is where the people with an intimate knowledge of the underlying code hang out.

Australian Stock Rom (Dump) : ............
PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE NOT A DEVELOPER, PLEASE DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS FILE.
http://rapidshare.com/files/406741229/dump.tar !!!!
not my work but taken from this forum, so mayb try a search before posting
So I guess the first silly question would be.....
how to separate out the CSC, Phone & PDA tar files from the Dump?
Or is there a way to use Odin to flash the dump.tar?
(just thought I'd ask the question before the OP does )
****************
Ok, so i was just looking at Odin, and there is a place where you can upload the dump.tar file. Is it really that simple - select the dump.tar downloaded from this thread, keep all other PDA/CSC/Modem spots empty, maybe select re-partition then flash??

Hey mate, caught in a similar situation here. The dump is not available now, do you mind uploading to another location? I know many other users waiting for this as well.
All the best with your flashing.
In the end until there is a leaked copy of the rom,we won't be able to flash it.we can customize with update.zip however we can't turn the dump into a rom.
The dump will contain the optus parts of the rom.but not the rom itself. I just figured someone may be able to help me fool the about screen into showing the wrong rom version.
At some point nandroid might get running, then we can do some interesting stuff until then, we just wait.
That's how I understand it

During inspection of your handset, the firmware check is done by the supplied tools to Optus, this will have no effect even if you change the About section on the Android OS, voiding your warranty further. I would rather advise you to wait for a month or so until 2.2 update comes up on Optus, then you can update the firmware via recovery.

the dump has a different format, it doesnt have a radio and csc file ( though you dont need it ) but you still need samsung.pit file i.e the bootloader file .. but be careful while doing that.

What one click are you referring to? If you are talking about odin one click, the only thing you should be using that for is going back to stock before flashing a rom. If a rom is flashable through clockwork than you would just put it on your internal sd card and follow the instructions for flashing through Rom Manager. If it is a rom that is supposed to be flashed with odin you would have to open up the zip file you downloaded and enter the appropriate files into odin.

WELL **** I flashed a rom now im stuck on congnition rom and i cant flash another one can u help
You need to be more descriptive if you want people to figure out a solution to your specific problem. Your post amounts to "I flashed a rom, I'm having problems, vague reference to rom manager, help guys".
Here's what we need:
1. What version of Android are you trying to flash?
2. What version are you currently running?
3. What modifications have you done?
4. What is the specific error you are getting?
5. What is the EXACT process you are using to try to flash the new rom?
READ READ READ READ READ, THEN READ SOME MORE!
you obviously have not read enough. there are 2 versions of ODIN we use for our phones:
One click ODIN which is simply a prepackaged version of the regular ODIN configured with the appropriate files that ODIN needs to flash our phones with it....they are packaged up by a developer named DesignGears. not every rom is going to have a one click odin....
there is also regular ODIN which requires you to have the appropriate files associated with your rom (kernel, pit file, modem, csc file, and rom), sometimes devs will package as much of that as possible into one or 2 files to flash in ODIN
you need to spend some time learning how to use these or just use the one click and go back to stock, then leave your phone alone. seriously, freaking out on a forum is not the right way to go about getting help for your phone.
calm down and give up the info that modest_mandroid has requested. none of us magically know what the heck you are talking about when you spout out random things like help, i flashed something and now i cant do anything else

[Q] reverting to stock Tab

hi
before posting I was trying to find an answer, but I couldn't.
i'm planning to sell my Tab and I want to revert from ext 4, custom firmware and CWM recovery to original Tab as was from factory ! is there any possibility to do that? thanks in advance !

You need to find the stock rom files and run them through Heidmall, no big deal as long as you can find the stock rom files.

I did not... in my case, my TAB is not branded, so I used JMI stock from the above link. I unzip the file and the results file I just added in Odin together with PIT file and that's all. System reverting to stock, also CWM was replace d with stock recovery.
there is a video tutorial posted on Youtube (is for T-mobile, but was the same procedure for me). hope it helps!
Need Help "Stuck on bootup
can Someone help me please, I have rooted Galaxy tab and today I tried to flash Arabic Rom. It did load every thing and Odin said Pass and it was green. But since then I only can get to "GalaxyTab Samsung" boot screen. doesnt let me to go to recovery mode. only can turn it off and can also go to Download and connect to PC.
I did try to flash it many time. but its the same after finishing flash, it only goes to first boot screen and stuck
You most likely have an ext4 rom and rfs kernel, or vise versa.
If it's stock kernel, than you have an ext4 rom most likely.
My best guess is you need to convert your kernel to ext4.

S7 to stock questions. (warranty related, help!)

Gotta go back to to stock cause my samsung is having the search button issues and it has to go back for warranty. Odin 1 click isback to stock for AT&T phone, and the one for Rogers, is confusing me to all hell. [STOCK ROMS] i896 Rogers 2.1 and 2.2 Warranty ROM Remove ATT boot, no dbdata error!! - xda-developers
Can anyone clarify this for me, im a little lost, they said to go back to stock AT&T bootloaders, then to re-flash the Rogers stock rom?
Edit: i got most of it sorted out, but im looking for the 512 PIT file and cant find it. They said it came with ODIN, but i dont see it there in the file, (all it was a .exe file)
This is so well documented in here. Did you do a search or look through the Q&A subforum?
I did a quick search, but i admit, i didnt have alot of time when this happened this morning. Ive been searching more and more at work. Mainly i just use google though. I managed to find a 512 FILE that was in another captivate thread and emailed myself the link. Going back to stock seems to be quite a task when you havent done it before. Ive read the instructions on the site a few times. Gonna have to look over it again when i get home.
any advice when doing this?
Okay, so im attempting to do it in the next 10 -15 mins, i just want to clariify something.
This is the steps im about to take :
Unzip files to one location
Download "APN backup and restore" from market on Phone & Backup APN settings
Boot phone into download mode. (Powered OFF, hold VOL UP & DN, plug in USB)
Open Odin3 1.xx flashing utility (NOT ODIN3 ONE CLICK RESTORE TO STOCK)
Use the .tar file from the stock ROM .zip in PDA box of ODIN
Use the 512 .pit file that came with odin3 and check re-partition and check auto-reboot. PIT FILE IS A MUST IF YOU HAVE FLASHED ANY CM7 / MIUI Ginger ROM!!!!! If NO GINGER+, pit should be OPTIONAL.
Click start.
Download APN b & R and Restore APN settings
Now, im using S7, which is a 2.3 ROM, do i need to flash the bootloaders too? Thats the most confusing part for me. The rest is cake.

[Q] How to restore a .tar file downloaded from sammobile.com?

Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone would happen to know how to restore a .tar file that I downloaded from sammobile.com/firmware/ . I got it in the hopes it would have a seperate PDA, CSC etc. files so I could restore using Odin put I have to admit I was stumped when I just got one .tar file. The file in question is Optus' 2.3.3 firmware and is called 'jvn_jv5_jv1.tar' if it's any help. The files inside the tar are:
-zImage
-param.lfs
-cache.rfs
-factoryfs.rfs
-boot.bin
-modem.bin
-Sbl.bin
Thanks.
Not 100% certain on this so perhaps wait for a confirmation but I think that if you only have one tar file you put it in the PDA and flash it.

Can totally confirm this!!
But if you want further confirmation there are instructions on sammobile.com
It's an easier way to flash as its only one file and less people can get the files mixed up. (It still has the kernal and modem inside it)
Edit: Just check and it seems to be missing dbdata.rfs Did you miss that out. If its not there then do another download and see if it is. If not then im sure it'll be fine..
