Black screen, vibrating in a pattern - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys and gals,
I think I bricked my phone and I'm assuming that it's the internal sd card that failed... My phone boots through the i9000m boot screen and does the S loading screen but then turns black and the phone starts to vibrate in a pattern. I do have download mode and have flashed using Odin (Re-Partition, 512 pit) with stock JK3 firmware.
The phone was acting up last night with some force closes and running slower than usual, and today I was opening settings and it would go to a black screen with no response, so I restarted and this is where I'm at. I was using Doc's Bell v1.1 Rom.
Should I try flashing Odin again?
Update: I tried flashing stock JK3 again and made it to system recovery (3e)

You need to flash with 803pit. N the vibrating patter is the force close pattern. Flash eith 803 n u shud be good

That did not work for me btw Im tried flashing with I9000XXJPY|2.2.1|2010 December|
From here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913
Initially I did it without the PIT file, searched for a thread regarding the same issue as the original posted to find this thread with the solution you mentioned however same problem.

Hi, you need to flash back to JM8, to restore your dbdata partition. Then flash to any other rom.
Cheers

Same for me
Hi,
Times ago I flash with odin but I forgot to remove RyanZA's OCLF before flashing,
symptomes: system start with "S" logo samsung and after a while screen goes dark
and intermitent vibrate.
Solution was:
- go to recovery mode
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
(I don't remember if only 1 is enough)
Hope it help,
Laurent.

[Q] help please with 2e recovery error

Hi guys,
just to preface I have read through the readme's and done searches but I can't seem to find a fix for my problem.
Was originally on JH2 and flashed via ODIN to JM8 successfully with the intent of getting to JPM. When trying to flash JPM it freezes about halfway and fails, however reflashing JM8 via download mode/odin works again. I also noticed that somewhere along the line i've screwed up my recovery mode somehow getting the errors:
multicsc:can not access to /system/csc/OPS/system
and
can't mount /dev/block/stl11 (invalid argument)
what do these errors mean...and how can I fix them?
Currently JM8 works, but I can't use recovery to wipe data/factory reset or wipe cache partition.
I've tried flashing without the re-partition but to no avail.
I feel as if fixing this can get me onto froyo.
Sorry but i'm a bit of a noob at this, got this far through extensive reading.
If not specifically answering my question could you at least please direct me to the right sources/threads which can help with my dilemma?
cheers
Try clockwork mod. With that factoryreset should be possible

worst time for this to happen, keep getting the android market download unsuccessful problem so can't download ROM manager. Any other way to get the apps onto my phone without the market?
ALso, how is this lkely to fix my recovery mode issue when it seems the current 3button recovery mode is already screwed up?
U should flash a kernel that includes cwm. Like 'superoptimized jp6-jpm kernel' that should enable recovery again.

i9000m inaccessible. Internal SD?

I have an i9000m with 2.1 and voodoo. I decided to upgrade to the JK3 firmware today when this happened. I backed up data, did a factory reset, removed the sim and flashed JK3 through Odin. Booted up fine, but when I try to run any app it force-closed.
So i powered down and tried to flash back to JH2. Got into Download Mode and flashed it, upon reboot i got this error
E:Cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(no such file or directory}
e:copy_dbdata_media:Cant mount SDCARD:
copy default media content failed
Tried a flash to JG8 and still the same thing. If I make it boot it goes to the Galaxy S animation and just hangs. The touch sensitive buttons light up, nothing on the screen.
I can still get into Download mode, but recovery mode gives me this
update media, please wait

Advice? Internal SD dead?

Hi. First question is... Did you disable the voodo lagfix before you flashed? This is a MUST when flashing and you diddnt mention it in your post.
The bad news is I believe that your internal SD card is toast and it will need to be sent in for repair. Sorry to be the bearrer of bad news...
Thanks for the reply!
Yea I disabled voodoo but I forgot to unroot it. I'm not sure if thats necessary.
I was beginning to think so. I'll take it back then
well the next best thing to try is to flash back to a stock ROM like JH2 and see if you are able to revive the internal SD
if not, then it's a visit to a Bell Store for repairs
Tried both JH2 and JG8, no revival so far.
Repairs it is i guess.
Btw, your sig exactly describes my SGS before I tried flashing JK3 on it, well besides the fact that i used voodoo! I guess I'd advise you to not flash it right now
I don't understand why so many seem to have issues with JK3. I find it to be a great ROM that has better performance than JH2. Many seem to have issues right after flashing JK3 so I'm thinking it has something to do with with how it's being flashed.
I haven't had any issues flashing and I don't know if it's because of the process I use or what. I've been using Odin 1.7 and never re-partition.
This is how I do it:
- unroot phone
- remove external SD and SIM
- wipe/factory reset
- flash with Odin, no pit, only 'auto reboot' checked
- fully boot up phone then shut down
- wipe/factory reset again
- insert external SD and SIM
- set the phone back up like i would a new device
I like to have my phone completely back to stock before flashing another ROM, especially if it's an upgrade from a previous ROM. I haven't had any problems from flashing but maybe I've just been lucky

Hey...looks like you use the I9000m version. I have some questions-
1.Have you tried flashing back to stock from darky's ROM or any other ROM?
2.If yes could you tell me if it's the above procedure you used or anything more?
3.Also, did you unroot your phone when on CF Root? How did you do it? (oneclick?)

[Q] Problems with sgs rooting and booting

I have bought a SGS in HK which firmware is ZSJPE.
I have accidentally perm-rooted with VISIONary+ when I planned to temp-root it.(Yes, accidentally)
It rebooted and seems to be worked, but then on next boot, it stucked at Galaxy S GT-I9000 screen.
It can boot into recovery mode and download mode, and so far I have tried the following:
1) Factory reset
2) Flashing speed mod <-stupid attempt in this situation
3) Flashing a custom rom <-stupid attempt in this situation again
4) Flashing a stock rom found on this forum
5) Accidentally(yes, again) flashed a Vibrant rom which once booted in to the stock home found from somewhere else
5) Wiping the internal SD (where I stored my titanium backup )
All of them succeed, but none of them worked (with my issue).
Now when I boot I can go until the "colorful S" screen, and vibrates like when sth force closes.
Please help me with this and I am happy if I get a usable stock rom back.
p.s. I am from HK so sorry for poor English
Edit:when I boot into recovery, the following appears:
Code:
update media, please wait
E:Can't mount /dev/block/stl10
(Invalid argument)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount DBDATA:
your storage not prepared yet. please use UI me
nu for format and reboot actions.
copy default media content failed.\
Edit no.2:Now this issue is fixed but another issue came out. I can only use XWJV1 rom but not ZSJPE nor JPG rom from where I bought the phone. Thanks for helping.
Finally fixed.
I flashed a XMJV1 rom with odin all 3 options checked(i.e. Re-partition, Reboot, F.reset time)
I guess why I am stuck at the "colorful S" is because I checked Re-partition with a rom that didn't give you the cache.rfs, dbdata.rfs, etc.(without phone and csc file).
Now I have another problem with my i9000.
I can now only use the XMJV1 rom but will stuck on boot ("colorful S" screen) with ZSJPE and JPG roms.
These are Hong Kong roms, where I bought my i9000 but I can't use them.
What are the possible causes and way to fix?
Thanks for answering.
that is common problem just flash it again with full wipe.

[Q] Installed MIUI MCG 5.2. Stuck in Boot Loop

Hello,
I installed MIUI MCG 5.2 by following the guide by rahulrulez.
After installing the zip from sdcard (in recovery), the phone seems to be stuck in a boot loop. I get to the MIUI logo and after a few seconds, the phone seems to give a small haptic kind feedback, the screen blinks and the boot animation starts up again. I tried reinstalling the zip from recovery but its still the same.
I think I must also mention that after flashing the "Froyo-full-pda" and reboot, the phone did not boot into android directly but instead into 3e recovery where it displayed some message about sdcard. I ignored that and rebooted and it went into froyo. After that I flashed the cm7 initial kernel and then installed MIUI through recovery.
This is the message I get after installing 'Froyo-full-pda' after the part where it formats cache:
-- Appling Multi-CSC...
Installing Multi-CSC
multicsc : src /system/csc/KOR/system
Install default apk-files. please wait
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(Invalid argument)
E:copy_data_default_apk:Can't mount DBDATA:
your storage not prepared yet, please use UI menu for format and reboot actions.
-----------------
If I select reboot after this, it boots into Froyo fine. Are these messages related to the boot loop? I do not think so as I'm able to flash cm7-initial kernel and go into cwm recovery after this.
What is mmcblkp02? Does it expect a second partition on the internal sd? Or does is that device supposed to be the external sd card (I dont have one)?
After posting the message above, I tried reinstalling froyo-full-pda in order to go back to froyo but after flashing I got the above messages again. Now my phone doesn't boot up. The back lights glow and it seems to pulse again and again. Help please!
Can't give you an answer as to what is wrong exactly but I'd recommend following itskapil guide while flashing it. More specifically, I recommend flashing EZRom first to make sure you have a copy of Froyo on it before flashing MIUI.
Hope this helps
lots of people had / have bootloops with the latest release.
what i did is:
Format System
Format Cache
Run Kernel Cleaning Script
Flash Glitch V10 kernel
Install MIUI V4.X - Then Flash V5.X over that.
lots of people have done it this way, and not suffered from bootloops
hope this helps, The above post is also a good fix
Thanks for the replies guys. Luckily I'm able to get to the download mode and cwm recovery (it has speedmod on it). As I was coming from Darky 10, I had all filesystems to ext4. I flashed froyo-full-pda without disabling lagfixes. As it threw an error about mounting, I disabled lagfixes and flashed froyo-full-pda again. This time it doesn't give me those errors however, it still doesn't get past the samsung logo on boot up. After the samsung logo, the screen goes blank, the button lights light up and the phone vibrates at 5 second intervals.
Will need to try EZRom to make sure I can get to froyo atleast
yeah, its not the end of the world,
you need to flash with pit and re-partition if you forget the lagfix
you will be up and running in no time
Fixed!
Flashing EZRom fixed it! Yay! Now I'm on MIUI! It's great but it drinks battery like crazy! Man I wish them devs find a fix for this soon. Will buy everyone a beer! Cheers

Need help with SGS Looping Issues

Essentially I am at a lost of what to do.
I have tried everything to no prevail which leads to me to my defeat post here for a cry for help.
I DO NOT believe I have bricked it yet because I can still get into download mode and CVM but it doesn't look like this image: http://blog.laptopmag.com/wpress/wp.../Clockwork-Mod-Boot-Screen-e1279545586372.jpg
which is what I wanted. My original plan was to install a new ROM however, I do not have that option "install zip from sdcard". Therefore I had to install the Speedmod Kernel which is why
ANYWAYS moving on, I have tried Heimdall and Odin. I have been able to bootup the phone. HOWEVER it doesn't load a ROM because the Samsung Galaxy GT i9000 logo just keeps looping. Like I said, I am able to get into Download mode and CVM with the new menu. However, when I click anything the screen goes blank and nothing happens. I am at a complete loss of what to do. I have tried everything and I'm looking to advice.
Thanks and hope to hear from you all.
If I remember correctly the Speedmod Kernel uses the power button to select options and if you click the home button the screen will go black.
If this is not the issue then reverting to a stock Rom is probably your best option.
Find a stock Rom at: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9000&r=-1#modelsa (this link is for international version) just select your country. from the links just above Firmwares for GT-I9000 .
From here you want to get a pit 512 & make sure you have a firmware with 3 files (PDA, Phone, CSC) . From here there are plenty tutorials on how to install a stock ROM.
If your issue is not pressing the wrong button in speedmod let me know and I'll be happy to provide a basic list of what to do... or provide a link.
Thanks for the quick reply, I have done that. I have installed the best one I could find: I9000XXJVQ
I put the following 4 files in Odin:
s1_odin_20100512 (PIT)
CODE (PDA)
CSC (CSC)
MODEM (PHONE)
It brings me to Android system recover <3e>. From there I'm at a lost at what to do. I see when it says
Code:
Copying media file
E:failed to mount. /sdcard (File exists)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount /sdcard you storage not prepared yet. please use UI menu for format and reboot actions.
Media files copy failed.
# MANUAL MODE #

From there I do not know what to do. When I click reboot system now; nothing occurs, the SGS image at the beginning still continues to loop. I'm looking at how to install the CVM so I can install my custom ROM.
I believe in the past I managed to do it (I installed the Dark Knight mod; but when it booted it said Encryption Unsuccessful and it only happened once. Was never able to get past that screen).
Anyways, that's the instruction from what I did above. What next (It's still looping at the SGS text at the startup).
EDIT:
From this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9336821&postcount=2
I then followed the install instructions for Root XXJVQ
The thing installed, it still has the issues. Opens the SGS start screen and doesn't go anywhere.
Further EDIT:
I then restarted the phone with following combination. (Power + Vol Up + Home). It then launched in CVM. I cleared partition and cache. I then installed the .zip ROM file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1510940&highlight=cyanogen) from SD card. Rebooted system. It launches. Says "Encryption Unsuccessful" Please restart phone. I click the restart phone button. It restarts, I then get the android looking icon dead on the ground with it's chest open with a "Red triangle !" above it. Stuck from here.
Wish I could help further. In my experience I had to flash stock twice. Once with with pit file and repartition selected. Once without pit file and repartition unchecked.
From there to flash a custom ROM you need to get rid of 3e recovery by flashing something like CF-roof. Then once you have cf-root you can instal custom ROM.
Here is link for cf-root

HOw long did it take for the ROM to install?
Have you tried removing the battery, battery back in recovery and reflash the ROM.
ICSSGS 4.2 has a requirement to be flashed twice. (different rom but may be similar issue)
Once to update the bootloader which will result in a boot loop when coming from a Gingerbread ROM and again to fully install the rom
Lastly download the ROM again checking the MD5 checksum before flashing
I trust that this will assist
Does it matter if it is installed from the External SD or Internal SD because when I try to install from the internal SD it says "Can't mount /emmc/" so I'm only able to install from the external SD.
I tried installing it twice. I still get the encryption unsuccessful screen. I also re-downloaded the ROM.
OK ii think what you need to do now is try to get the phone to boot successfully into a stock rom for your region.
You mentioned in the first 2 or 3 posts that you did download from SamFirmware a stock rom.
It is probably a Odin flashable ROM
Is it a 3 file or 1 file?
Flash and then boot up the phone to be able to use it.
If successfull move on to the next step.
If you have been able to do this before i would suggest to try a different ROM.
I can personally recomend the ICSSGS 4.2 ROM following the instructions on the opening post for that ROM
If this works then try Dark Knight or other ROM
If this post has helped please use the Thanks Button

Unfortunately, it does not boot into stock ROM. It just loops.
I tried to do it over again. I used a different firmware: I9000XXJVU_I9000OXAJVU_OXA
So let's begin by retracing everything I did.
1) I essentially did this: http://www.androidegis.com/how-to/learn-how-to-install-xxjvu-firmware-on-galaxy-s-i9000/ (so it had the 4 files: pit, PDA, Code & CSC)
2) After I did that, I went into Odin and Put this as PDA "CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS" and clicked start
3) It then loaded but it keep looping. I had a feeling it didn't have a ROM installed. I erased data, cache and etc. Then I installed the Dark Knight 3 ROM. Install by external SD because I couldn't get the internal SD to work "Can't mount /emmc/" error.
4) I then reboot. I get the ROM loading screen. Then boom, stuck on Encryption Unsuccessful.
5) I put it back in recovery mode and repeat step 3 again.
6) I get the encryption error again.
Pretty much stuck at there.
so what you are saying is that no matter what firmware you flash it will boot loop?
I personally would not be trying a ICS ROM until you can boot a gingerbread rom successfully.
I have personally softbricked my phone once where i then was able to get into 3BR but was unable to boot due to a bad flash reflashing a gingerbread rom a couple of times with odin worked for me.
Try reflashing your JVU rom 2 times in a row.
I assume that you are able to get into 3BR if so what happens if you try to mount /system is there a error message?
When the phone is boot looping what is displayed on the screen?

from what you are doing it seems like you aren't doing what we say. Sorry if this is not the case.
1. Follow steps from your link above.
2. Attempt to reboot. Most likely you will be stuck in boot.
3. Flash again steps as link above. This time do not use pit and make sure repartition is unchecked.
4. Now boot. This time you should boot into stock.
5. Once in stock set USB debugging on and connect phone to PC and copy ROM you want to flash to internal sd card .
6. Flash CF-root with Odin.
8. Restart phone in to recovery and flash ROM on sd card.
Sorry to repeat this but none of what you say mentions flashing stock twice once with and once without repartition checked. You need to do this right after each other.

So your suggestion is to keep doing JVU flashing until I can get it to work? Do I just follow that instruction and do the flash once with the PIT file (and repartition) and do it again without the PIT file? If it still doesn't boot, what then?
The phone boot looping. RIGHT when you turn on the phone. It has that Samsung Galaxy I9000 screen. It just has that, goes black for like 2-3 seconds then resets itself over and over again.
There is no issue with mount /system. I believe when I try to mount /emmc, there is an error. This is important because this is what lets me access the internal SD.

It just goes into Android system recovery <3e> and the copying media files fails (both times I flash it). Just an error, still can reboot system and etc but I don't think anything happens.
This error on the second flash is

Click Reboot Now is <3e>. Nothing happens, it boots up. Shows the first Samsung Galaxy S screen, does nothing. About to boot stock ROM but doesn't. Loops it back to the SGS screen once more. Then it just shuts off and a picture of a battery shows up?
If you are flashing through Odin twice all three files 1st time with pit and repartition checked, second time without pit and repartition unchecked and still have issues then I would say problem may be with phone but I am new to this myself. Only commenting and given suggestions as I had similar issues which I resolved with steps I mentioned.
Options would be to download another stock ROM and do a checksum to ensure it is fine, download a different version of Odin (i use odin 1.85) and a new 512 pit file, reinstall the drivers for the phone, try it all on a different PC. Also make sure kies is not running when you do this (kill any background services.for kies) and try disable your antivirus on your PC. Also remove external as card and Sim.
If these suggestions don't help try search google for those errors you are getting. That's what I have done and managed to sort every issue so far.

Ok lots of reading in past posts here's what I would do and it works everytime. Google links to xxjvu firmware and and use those three files plus pit 512 repartition checkedand flash. Then to root your phone simply go to darky website. But before you do any of that tell me what rom you were on before you flashed new kernel and what exactly were you trying to accomplish out of your phone. ie.end result and who your service provider is. If you pm me I can walk you through it no problem.

It was 2.3.3 I believe before I did it.
My goal is to put a nice custom ROM (looking towards Dark Knight 3).
I have no idea what the specific darky rom I need.
Service provider was Virgin Canada.
Been thinking. Have you tried using heimdal. Try search for a tutorial that flashes a stock ROM with heimdal.
Sent from my GT-P7500 using xda premium
What did you have before the problems? Was it a lagfixed rom with ext4 partitions?
I've had strange problems when I tried to flash stuff with a lagfix, try to flash your stock base, and then flash a kernel that supports ext4. See if it boots up. If it does, disable lagfix and then change to whatever you want
