Rogers Captive, sense vs samsungs software - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I am trying to find a great android device... that can give me 3g on my network - Rogers.....
My question is, if you root the captive and put on custom roms and kernels... can you have the sense ui and eliminate samsungs software?
thx

Technically yes, right now no. There are no custom ROMs that have sense. Just go to Bell and get Desire Z or Telus for Desire.

There is no bell in Winnipeg..... and telus here is still cdma like mts....
well, even if it is not the sense ui... does it removes samsungs attempt at software?
thx

Oh tough luck mate.
There are custom ROMs that have gotten rid of touchwiz launcher/touchwiz widgets. However, the nifty features like the power controls in the notification bar or swipe to call/text still remain. Does that answer your question? You can easily get rid of touchwiz yourself by using root-friendly apps like Titanium backup and uninstall touchwiz.

nice, thanks for the info....
I love my desire hd, I just want something I can still play with (root, roms, kernels) but still have 3g... until dhd launches here... if ever.
thx again

Best Nexus One Rom?

Hi guys,
I have a N1 and have moved from Froyo to Sense. My question, are there any Custom roms which have the best of both worlds?
Froyo features I like, Pattern unlock without having to swipe unlock first, shows charge levels when charging.
Sense features I like, Widgets, Music Player.
Is there a custom rom with best of both, or can you load the HTC apps onto Froyo independently?
Thanks in advance.
Plz ask in the q&a forum.
I don't think the Froyo Sense rom is stable yet.
I found this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714184
It has a black bar and is Froyo. It's pretty much a hacked stock build thats not bloated but rooted and ready for hacking.

+1
It's what I use.
Cool, I'm on this now, liking it. Will check it for a while. Well liking the way that the Google account pulls down all your apps you have installed, can switch roms in minutes.
Its honestly all opinions my friend
That's like asking: Do you like chocolate cake? Cause I like vanilla. My mom likes carrot cake, and my dad. Well. My dad likes apple pie.

Your mom and dad are wrong. Vanilla is obviously the way to go
EDIT: OP: I wouldn't mess with any available sense froyo roms for awhile. Try out vanilla froyo and when good sense froyo roms are available you can check them out then.
Hey.
Do you have a AT&T version or a T-Mob version?...
If you have an At&t version could you please disable the 3g data and just enable the wifi and test if the wireless keep alive when the phone go to sleep
Thx.

Many good ROM's to try out. Just start with a ROM, flash it, test it for a few days, if you don't like it, try another.
No ROM is better than the other, is all about personal taste. Many people praise Cyanogen's work, though i admit he does a good job on his work, i prefer a ROM more closer to stock then i just take a little from others and put it in in the one i use for my own personal taste.

I want to pick up a Captivate, 1 quick question though

First off, I'm in Canada so I would be buying the device from Rogers when it is released soon (if that matters)
Is there anyway to take the UI that Samsung has on the phone and replace it with the standard Android look? Would I have to root the phone and load a specific rom to get that option or would it be available by default?
Thanks for the info
Not available by default, you get Samsung's TouchWiz. Many of us download LauncherPro or ADW to replace it.
To get stock Android it would require flashing a ROM. I haven't followed the ROM development that closely but at least one ROM over there claims no TouchWiz.

I think you mean the Home page, right?
There's several alternatives, like PandaHome, Home ++ and others.
I use PandaHome, works great for me, but looks around and try them all.

That is a great rom that has very little touchwiz left in it. Only issue with it is GPS is not currently working at all.
As was said before launcherpro is a great alternative, and then there are other apps you can use to replace samsungs stock music, calendar and browser.
Keep in mind that all the Touchwiz/homescreen implementations have been slightly different on all versions of the Galaxy S, so you may be surprised by what Rogers brings to the phone.
I like the look of touch wiz and the stock android launcher doesn't have any more functionality. But it may feel snappier.
I'd suggest a market app like panda home, ADW or Launcher pro.
The roms without touchwiz are not complete yet. It does work on the vibrant though. I'd be interested to see how the rogers cappy differs from att. And if we can get that firmware.

yet another canuck here, also going to pick up the phone from rogers.
I heard that rogers will remove the front camera so no video calling will be possible. I am a total noob when it comes to this stuff but would it be possible to use the rear cam for video calling?
You may find some software to support that, but how will you see the person you're talking to?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Neither does the us version.
I havent seen an app that allows for video calling from the rear camera......
bah that is not good, not good at all!
and i didnt even think about the other person not seeing me, valid point.
I wonder if there is a way i can just get the phone, sell it, buy one from bell and use that.
Would i need to unlock the bell phone to work on the rogers network?

Yes, but fortunately unlocking the Galaxy S in any form is easy ...

[Q] Any non-touchwiz ROMs out there?

I know that TeamHacksung is working on an ICS port and CM9 may unofficially be ported to the G-Note at some point, but that's all in the unforeseeable future.
And all the Gingerbread ROMs I see in the development section are ToucWizified.
Am I missing one, or did all the current custom rom "developers" keep their creations totally TouchWiz-bound?

my previous phone was a HTC hd2. yes window phone. rooted to run android 2.3 with sense and I can tell u, its even faster (scrolling, flip thru menus, contact scrolling) than my gnote. I can say, touchwiz is way way too bloated.
my old phone can use go widget launcher n is still smooth
gnote with 2x the hardware specs, lag!
I am also waiting for a pure rom, not a tweaked stock.
On sgs2 I used miui and it was really, really nice.

Sense is the one thing i miss from my Desire HD. Touchwiz is nothing in comparison with sense. This is just my opinion, i am sure others would disagree.

[Q] complete stock ASOP rom possible out of the box?

I guess im used to computer types of drivers, kernels, etc.
but I just don't see why we couldn't build a complete stock ASOP rom without any modification other than a specialized kernel?
shouldn't it be able to just "work" because android is still android right?
Sorry for being ignorant lol but could anyone explain why it isn't possible for a raw ASOP rom to run on the vivid?

It would be possible but company's like htc embed there software deep into the rom and replace most of the vanilla stuff with htc sense. The cyanogen mod that's currently being worked on is from the google nexus so it has to be ported because obviously these aren't the same phones. It would be like taking a hard drive from your Intel installation and trying to use it with an AMD processor. its not going to work because you've basically changed the brain.
alright i got it, thanks!
damn HTC for making sense mandatory and damn AT&T for not having any Google "approved" phones (ASOP Geared)

It would be really great if google just made a standard for manufacturers to follow so we could use roms on different devices and then wed have more apps because then developers wouldn't be forced to make there apps for such a wide range of devices. But i guess that would make them to much like apple lol

[Q] Stock HTC One apks available? (CM Compatible)

Is there a list of stock HTC One apks that can be downloaded? I installed CyanogenMod and there are a couple apps i'd like to install back onto the device if possible. EG: Mail, TV, etc...
Thanks!
Bump. Still wondering if these stock applications are available.
Those apps won't work on CM

Any chance of someone getting them to work in the future or is it very unlikely?

Unfortunately, I don't think it's likely. The problem is a framework issue. You may be better off looking for customized Sense ROMs.

Go look in the development forums-- if you search sense, you'll get a list of topics back that might interest you. How "senseless" they are though will vary-- I'm also not sure what you're looking for. Do you want everything to look like AOSP but still be able to run apps? That seems a little on the far end to me (usually you'll get things like status bar tweaks and such).

I'm using Viper rom and Nova launcher... very pleased with the number of options. Viper gives you the pull-down settings toggles and more reboot options...ect Nova gives you everything else and a stock look. Just cant use blinkfeed/HTC widgets, but the image processing/camera/zoe stays stock which is my main concern with ASOP roms currently.
Its not perfect, but its close.
I still miss my pattern-lock music controls hopefully coming in 4.2 right?
