any data counter apps being release?
very horror without data counter.
It;s not the best solution but I call my carrier and it sends me how much data I have left from the plan

In an effort to cut costs I removed the data plan from my phone. I setup wifi at home since I rarely use the internet while I am away from home and I plan on just stopping using it at all unless I'm home.
Here's my question. I have a lot of apps on my phone and some of them use the net. Without a data plan are those apps going to connect to the internet while I'm away from home and run up my bill?
Is there anything that I need to do on the phone now that I don't have a data plan to ensure that it is all set up to just be a phone when I'm away from home and a fully functional Android device when I'm home and on wifi?
There is an app for your issue. Can't remember the name, but I'm sure someone will come on to tell you.
You have to ask your provider... are they going to let your phone connect to the net and charge you ridiculous fees or they are not going to let you even hook up unless you have a data plan? Because the phone itself will check for stuff every so often. You can disable wireless synk for google stuff but your other apps may still hook up to the net Either way, screwing something up in the apn settings will guarantee you not to be able to get on the net, it may mess up with your mms messages too though.
Good luck
Check my provider? Seriously? T-Mobile just tells me that I HAVE to have a data plan cause they want to make more money
Try APNdroid in the market... it disables the 3g/edge data...
'Toggle Data' is also good. You just tap the icon and it will disable, and tap to enable again. I also don't have a data plan (not all the time anyway) so it's very useful.
WiSyncPlus is your friend from now on.. http://www.cyrket.com/package/mobi.gearsoft.android.wisyncplus

Hey now.. how am I supposed to know you have t-mo... it's not like it's in your details or in your signature lol
Before I even attempt this, I want to know if anyone had any adverse affects with their phone by removing CIQ or other bloatwares on their vivid?

You can successfully disable (freeze) bloatware, and bloatware remains "disabled" after full reboots, even with battery pull. See my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19501357&postcount=108
My phone does not exhibit any ill effects after I've disabled bloatware as described in the above procedure.
At the same time, I do recommend to perform a full phone reboot after disabling bloatware to avoid any adverse affects of a temp root.
However, you cannot uninstall and/or disable Carrier IQ with a temporary root, as far as I'm aware.
Worked for me
The procedure referenced in the second post worked with no problems for me. It got rid of all the bloatware listed in the referenced post. As noted, CIQ just doesn't want to die. Keeps popping back - like a true virus.
From what they have said it seems their log is ram resident, and transmitted periodically to their servers via ATT data network.
Originally I had swapped sim cards into an older phone. Now I've decided to use the Vivid but disable data connection. I do connect to my home network. Maybe a mistake.
To me the CIQ thing is a security risk as well as a matter of principle. To minimize risk, I'm limiting use to non-sensitive data and not installing any apps till root and custom roms are available. On principle, they did not ask my permission and they have no right to any of my information, regardless how limited or sterile they claim it to be.
Also, I occasionally power cycle the device a few times per day to wipe out their cache.
Any updates on removing Carrier IQ? A friend got the HTC Vivid for Xmas and wants help with removing CIQ.
You do realize CIQ transmits data over Wifi connections too right? If you have any sort of data connection, its transmitting.

I'm looking forward for any development associated with the Carrier IQ profile:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/breaking-eff-releases-iqiq-to-collect-carrier-iq-profiles/
Could it be a way to direct Carrier IQ to disable data collection, data transmission, or at least direct Carrier IQ not to transmit data over Wi-Fi?
It's preposterous that Carrier IQ (along with AT&T) has no problem utilizing private networks for their own business.
One could configure a firewall to prohibit such data transmission.
Does anyone know an IP address, or URL, where the data gets transmitted to?

On my phone I use 3G Watchdog to count the 3G data I use.
Jelly Bean has a built in counter and it can warn me when using known mobile hotspots that large downloads are going to happen.
Does anyone know if there is a Data Counter that will count on known networks?
i.e. On wifi network `blah` you've used 500MB this month?
It would be handy, as I received a txt to the device that when I checked said "Outstanding £2874.."
I nearly wet myself but read the whole thing and realised it was injury spam
When you go to data usage hit the menu button and there's a mobile hotspot option that allows you to designate a wireless access point a hotspot. It will restrict background data on that access point. Not sure if it keeps a data count because I haven't used it yet.

When am getting seriously low on my Internet data allowance for the month on my phone contract, I tend to turn off mobile data and just use WiFi for the last few days.
Rather than paying extra for more data allowance is there a way where I can just use WhatsApp on my mobile data or a specific button I can press for it rather than disabling things individually ?
I have a Galaxy Note with 4.0.4 rooted. Life mobile (EE)
I have a 1gb data plan, I have had a problem with this for the last 4 months, I only use my data plan when away from home and no access to wifi, but all other times i turn it OFF, but lately at 2400hr or 0:00hr midnight something turns on my data plan and upload/download data, no way of telling large amounts of data sometimes as big as 199mg at one time..
I have gone through 1gb of data within 1wk of limited data use, facebook, mail, whatsapp, most of the time using Wifi.
It seem i am not the only one this is happening to (check your data usage via your provider phone account),there are many cases on the internet, but no one has found the real reason,a lot has pointed to the sim provider ???
Can someone throw some light on this..
I never knew that Data plan can be automatically be turn on then off by app on a phone...
Data conection always OFF
WiFi when I can get it On
thanks you
I'd guess a rogue app, turning on data
Not sure if this will work as don't have the N7000 in front of me & not even 100% sure "data" will show in Android 6 due to app permission changes in Marshmallow, it might be under device or something.......
Go to settings>apps>gear wheel>app permissions
then look for data permission touch it to see & change which apps have premission to turn data on & off
