[Q] selling broken nexus one - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a broken nexus one i want to sell i cant power on device at all. If i sell it and the person who buy it gets it fixed will they still be able to see my contacts and emails? I removed memory card and sim card i changed facebook etc etc. if i change gmail password will it leave contacts on phone or say cant sync with google? HTC still has phone right now they will return phone because i refuse to pay 298.00 to get it fixed.

Yes, they can see your data.
Have you tried charging the battery, then while still on charge pulling battery, and reinserting. If its just a faulty power button, it should eventually start. There's apps to reboot, sleep/ wake screen, etc...

did all the steps on forum nothing worked when i sent to htc they said i cracked lcd. Dont know how was using otterbox defender. but when i get phone back and sell it i dont want person to get it fixed and see my contacts.

If it's still at HTC, ask them to wipe it for you...

[Q] Anybody have experience with ATT Warranty Center?

Today I went to the AT&T store to complain about the GPS issues on the Captivate. The associate (after looking the device over), gave me a flier/form and told me to take the phone to the local AT&T warranty center. The flier seems to indicate that the warranty center folks would either fix the issue or replace the device if they agree that my phone has an issue and is not (water) damaged etc.
Anybody have any experience with this?
I don't have any experience while owning a Captivate and going to the Warranty Center...
But when I had my Samsung Impression, and the phone display (it was a touchscreen with a slideout keyboard) completely stopped working, it wouldn't register any touch at all, I took it to them, they turned it on, tested that it truly didn't work, and they gave me a new phone (might have been refurbished) on the spot. Walked out with a smile on my face and went on with my day.
Same experience with two LG Xenons with bubbles under the screen. On the spot replacement within 10 minutes after they verified that the moisture sensor was clear.

Refurbished phones are the replacement. Very easy to deal with.
I had the same thing with my wife's Bold - warranty center didn't really try to fix it, just did the replacement. You have to make sure to do the data wipe before the exchange, and they can't do much in terms of data transfer. Process itself is very quick and straight-forward.
For my captivate GPS I just did a mail replacement. Gives me the time to swap everything at home with no pressure.
Funny you should ask. I'm currently dealing with a warranty exchange via phone and mail. I called customer support and told them about the random shutdown issue. They transferred me to the "Android" department. The Android department has heard about this so-called random shutdown issue so they sent me a replacement (refurb) phone after asking me questions like "Has your phone ever been dropped?" "Are there any damages to the screen?" "There is a square sticker right next to the 3 golden battery connector prongs. What color is it?" (FYI. If your phone gets wet, that white square will turn to a different color! Mine is still white. Never been in water. Anyway...)
They sent me the phone yesterday and today I turned it on. There was a new problem. It randomly takes me back to the Home screen when I'm just casually browsing the web, flipping through my apps, etc. It doesn't force close the app or system that I'm on. I just boots me out of whatever I'm doing and shows me the Home screen. So, I called to tell them about this problem. It is now in a box that it originally came in and it's waiting to be shipped out. They will give me another Captivate in the mail by Friday.

The Warranty Repair Center in my town doesn't stock Captivates. They'll take a look at the phone to see if it was damaged or submerged, then tell you to call the 800 number. Or, you can skip driving in to a warranty center and just call the 800 number. The people there will talk you through some basic troubleshooting, then ship you a replacement (ground is standard, you can pay for an upgrade to overnight). You have 10 days after that to return your phone.
As for your GPS problems.... if you've upgraded to JH7 and can get a solid lock out in the open under a clear sky, well... Sorry to disappoint, but your replacement phone is probably going to have just as many problems with the GPS. I do (and I'm on my 4th Captivate), so do 7 of my friends and coworkers who have Captivates, and so do about 90% or more of the people reporting on the forums.
According to AT&T and Samsung, the JH7 update 'addressed the GPS issues'. And it did make it better... Before, it would just about never lock on. Now I can usually get a lock within 10~20 seconds and it'll show me where I should be.... until I go for a drive.
The test is this: install My Tracks and go for a drive around town. Once you're done, take a look at your track.
If you've got a softtop convertable or a fiberglass roof, you're good.
If you've got the phone far forward on the dash and have a large, steeply raked windshield, you're good.
If you've got a large sunroof, you might be good.
Otherwise, you're stuck with a measured 50m~100m accuracy (it reports 15m~30m, but don't believe it) if you can even maintain lock.
Good luck!

Mine was doing this too. I disabled plugins and a problematic page would render. Might be something to try just for the heck of it.

Very easy to deal with IMO. I am on my 3rd captivate.
1st one experienced random shutdowns, 2 days later received second one in mail and wouldn't get any network signal, 2 days later my 3rd and hopefully last captivate was on my doorstep.
All you have to do is send in your old unit. I was satisfied with the android people over at ATT.
Dealing with AT&T is MUCH more pleasant then dealing with Samsung for your warranty support. They're quick, they're nice, and they get you in and out in about 30 minutes.

Yeah, I don't think it's that. It wasn't just on the Browser. It was also doing it while I was just flipping through the apps or reading an email using the stock email, or SMS, or looking at Settings. Anything I was on, it booted me out and took me to the Home screen. I returned it. I'm getting my 5th Cap today.
Thanks for all the replies. I'll post my experience if it turns out to be any special or interesting.
One other question. My phone is currently rooted. Should I spend effort unrooting it or it should be fine?
Unroot it and/or flash it back to original JF6 using ODIN One-click. If you've installed Froyo, do a Master Reset so it'll delete traces of 2.2 folders and whatnot. Backup first!
Pleasant experience
I went to the AT&T warranty center last weekend and was in and out of the store in less than 10 minutes with a new Captivate in hand. It was an extremely pleasant experience.
Just want to say that this replacement device (new and not refurbished) locks the GPS in about 10 sec inside the car and even faster under the sky and remains spot on. This leads me to believe that it may be some batches of device with buggy hardware with GPS issues.
Thanks
100% of the phones you get at the device support centers are refurbished sport. I'm a manager at one. If they told you it was new you have been whamboozled

Walked in, gave them a Captivate that refused to charge, boot, or respond in any way, walked out with one that works.
Took maybe 30 minutes tops.

When I asked specifically whether the device was refurbished, I was told that it was new unit, as the refurb units have some red sticker on the device (when you take the battery out). Either way it does not matter to me as this unit works perfectly including the GPS.

Looks like you were lied to.
Unless if you were still under your 30 days, which would put you under the buyer's remorse program [completely apart from Warranty], then you'd be receiving a new model.
+ most Warranty Captivates are affected by the random shutdown issue, as they aren't scrapped if they're under the affected IMEI range.
You're using a refurbished Captivate, all in all.
My first phone was rooted and then the random crashes started. It got so bad I couldnt turn the phone on unless I did a battery pull then with the charger plugged in and finger banging and milking a cow at the same time.
I finally got it into download mode and went back to stock. I went to the tech center explained what happened and she replaced it right on the spot and gave me a NEW phone, battery and charger. BUT she gave me my old battery cover. :-(

[Q] Does Froyo fix the power off issue?

Guys, I'm really starting to get seriously annoyed with my Captivate. I'm having multiple issues with it. I've got the "Power-Off" issue where it turns off when in standby, which has caused me no end of problems. I also am finding that I have to remove and re-add my Exchange account pretty regularly. It stops receiving mail, but doesn't give any errors. I can remove the account, and then re-add it, and it will work again for awhile. Third problem is that when I try and access Exchange mail from the quick toolbar at the top, it invariably crashes the Email app. These are all things that HAVE to work for me to have this phone. I was going to wait for Froyo to see if these things get fixed, because I really don't want to return the phone. I've put money into Zagg protection shields, and have all my contacts on here. Yes, I know I can back them up and do send the shields back to Zagg for replacements, but I'd rather not have a refurb phone. I'm quite seriously thinking about going back to the dark side and getting the iPhone 4 when Verizon comes out with it.
Sorry about the rant, here's the question. Does anyone know if these issues are fixed in the Froyo release?
Thanks!
Teejeaux
I do not think flashing a rom will cure your random shut downs. Sorry, I would go warranty exchange

Power off issue is NOT a software issue. U could get ur phone exchanged under warranty exchange from AT&T. I had mine replaced 3 times.

Not a battery issue, with the experience I had:
Phone 1: 10.06 - Replaced due to battery life too low (within 30 days) - got phone 2
Phone 2: 10.07 - Sleep death issue - Phone - Warranty replacement - got phone 3
Phone 2: 10.07 - Sleep death issue - Battery - new battery sent - retained phone 3
Phone 3: 10.08 - Sleep death issue - Phone - Warranty replacement - got phone 4
Phone 4: 10.07 - --- this is working without sleep death or charge death ---
The phone I have now is a 10.07 build.
Hope this helps.

i just made a post regarding this earlier tonight = / and the car mode is now happening to me now. I called htc support like 5 hours ago and they were absolutely no help at all. "reboot your phone into safe mode" did that "is the problem still occurring?" why yes it is still not charging when on... then they say it must be a hardware problem and to use my warranty and thanked me for my patience and please continue using htc.
I dont know why they have tech support that does not know how to support a recent common occurring problem. I don't even mind the warranty phone as much but i just took a ton of photos and videos the last month and i cant even back them up to my computer now.

Hey after reading through that other thread i did what they said about turning off the developer options and fast boot and it seems to be charging when plugged into the wall but it still will not connect to the computer. Also seems like the car mode is not turning on any more and after resetting it a few times earlier the apps do not open in landscape. So the only issue that remains is the usb connection to the computer although the whole situation is still ridiculous and i do not know how htc wants to pass it off as a hardware issue = / if you find a solution please let me know.

After I restart my phone by pressing volume down key and power key with charger plugged in, it starts to charge and also charge when connected to pc but pc wont detect it. No USB drive no syn manager. (note- I dont not enter bootloader by restarting. just leave power and volume down key immediately after screen is off, else u will get in Bootloader.)
I cant even root.
Any way I think i will sell this phone if no problem occurs.
Regards,
Also if i change any setting regarding USB connection type or developers option or fast boot option and charging stops and i have to again plug in charger and start with power and volume down key.
Other than that some problems keep rising like speaker get on automatically when i take call , dial screen rotates, it keep asking "complete action with day dream or Tunein radio"

Doesn´t seem to be too unsusual.
My phone (unrooted) began with the not charging problem after about three weeks. There is also a notification telling that I should connect a charger that is supported (shouldn't the original charger from HTC be supported). About at the same time it also decided that all apps should run in landscape mode and it at the same time become a painful thing to answer the phone by routine as it decided to activate the loudspeaker.
The problems are however quite intermittent and disappears and comes back without any known trigger.
I had the device on service when they updated firmware, run what ever tests they run and tried to charge it. All tests passed and I got it back. Everything seemed ok but day two the phone refused to charge again. Back to the store again where they also tried to charge but (luckily enough) got the same result as I.
It seems like if the battery is totally drained, the device starts charging after some while. Before it starts charging as it should, the red light goes on and off for some time.
I have exactly the same symptoms with my HTC One. It does not change until it's fully empty and turned off. Then it does change. The orange LED blinks 5 times and after that it start blinking very slowly.
I sended my phone on repair. True a webportal Im able to see any progression. I noticed they also uploaded a photo, see attachment.
It clearly seems to be missing a small element on the motherboard. (near the arrow). What I find weird thought, is that it seems to be the head of the phone and not the bottom near the USB port.
They also had some trouble opening the device as you can see between the two white stickers on the bottom of the phone. I'll keep you posted on any progression...

It didn`t always start charging. Sometimes I have had to plug the connector in 10 or 20 times before anything happened. Otherwise it did not start charging until the battery was completely drained.
Everytime it does not charge, the little icon in the left corner tells me that I should connect a supported device.
I sent a question to HTC support about the problem and got the recommendation to send it to a repair center (where it already is) and they actually gave an answer on my question if HTC are aware about the problems. The answer was "We know about it and work on a solution".
Interesting if that actually is true and not just a too quick answer from someone that wanted to close the case at the a technical support.
Has anybody else asked the question?
Any one having charging and USB problem with HTC One had ever charged his/her phone by any other charger (not the charger u get in box) even for once ? I did that all the time !!!
Yeah, I always used a Samsung charger with mine and it works a treat, I just sent mine back to my network provider and they sent it off for repair, obviously, they put it down as a hardware issue and replaced the damaged device with a refurbished device which I don't care about because of rather have one that works than not

Phone display won't come on

My wife's M8 all of a sudden crapped out on us and the the screen won't turn on. When plugged in, the LED comes on but that's it. We've held the volume buttons with the power button for two minutes, and it still won't come on. We've talked to Sprint and HTC and neither will send us a new phone but a refurbished one. Sprint wants a $150 deductible which seems pointless because we have the Total Equipment Protection, but I digress. Anyways, what other options could we try before we have to pay money (that we don't have) to have it fixed? Also, my wife is worried about losing her pictures (already have over 2000) is there any way to recover them at this point? They don't save with her Google account, correct?
Also, I should mention that we have tried to plug in the phone via USB to try and recover anything, but of course, the phone is not recognized.
Have you tried plugging the phone up to a PC? Even if the screen is dead you should still be able to access your storage, unless the phone is actually powered off and won't turn on. Also, as far as getting it replaced, if the screen is dead then that's a hardware issue and Sprint should replace it without any cost to you. The $150 you're referring to is for using your phone insurance to replace the device through Asurion, which you shouldn't have to use unless the device was physically damaged, lost or stolen.

Yeah I tried plugging it into the PC already hoping it would read it, but I think it might be powered off unfortunately since it won't read. And after dealing with Sprint again, they are going to be sending a replacement at no cost. I don't know why there was so much confusion before, but at least there is SOME light at the end of the tunnel. Sucks we can't recover all those photos though, mostly of our 1 year old .

iPhone trouble assist

HISTORY:
2 days ago, I bought an iPhone 4 for let's say, out of this world, price!
I've always wanted to try an iPhone and since it was a price, to die for, I purchased it.
The guy who sold it to me did not stay around and immediately took off.
So, I started fiddling with My iPhone 4.
Pressed the menu key an iTunes logo and a USB cable flashed on screen with a message :insert a sim card.
Ha, I had not inserted a sim card that is why the flash or so I thought.
Can't get the back cover off, oh bugger, its the tiny pin hole area where to place the sim. Had to Google to find out how to put a sim card in a iPhone, really.
Sim card inserted. Clicked on the menu key, still the same. Pressed, power button, and all hell broke loose. Damn phone is locked. And I DON'T KNOW THE PASSWORD.
My question:
How to get this device working for me?
What are the softwares needed to reflash reset the phone to its original state i. e without any password protection.
Sent from my HUAWEI G750-T20 using XDA Free mobile app
You can't. It's not possible if you don't have the password. You're out of luck.
Sorry, going to close this, as we don't support iPhones. And any potential method for this could also be used on stolen devices.
