[Q] Trackball Wake - I don't get it, enlighten me please - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I see more and more people who 'must' have trackball wake in their ROM.
I want to try it out... but if you carry it in your pocket, does it get accidentally turned on? I don't need my battery dying too early today.

Nope I never had it wake the phone accidentally, even If it does the lock screen prevents any unlocks. I personally 'need' it because my power button is broken

i need it also because my power button is dead too. and no, it has never woken in my pocket.

Use it all the time! Never turned on by accident.

Anyone who holds onto a nexus one with a broken power button is kind of dumb. It's still under warranty. Call them for a swap. You won't even be without a phone.

Well my power button broke after I replaced my digitizer (I could only afford to replace it myself) and therefore voided my warranty. Trust me, I would have replaced it if I could

i had a broken power button, unlocked bootloader, rooted phone and i had opened up the phone messed up the void sticker called htc told them my warranty was void because i disassembled the phone, sent it to them they repaired it and sent it back with stock 2.2 locked bootloader free of charge.... awesome

Damn, might have to try that!

My N1's power button is intact. However, track ball wake is a convenience for me And yes as everyone here has reiterated, the track ball wake does not unlock the phone it merely lights up the screen though with CM you can configure a track ball unlock as well. But I guess that is what will cause accidental unlocks in the pocket

It's a matter preference. I find it very handy to have trackball wake.
Now with trackball answer it's even more handy for me.

I hate having to awkwardly push the power button with my right pointer finger to unlock it.
It's like im giving my phone a reach around.
I use trackball wake+unlock.
It's so nice to just push it twice, then have it unlock. Less work = faster access.
It occasionally comes unlocked in my pocket, but the worst that ever happens is I have 200 characters of mumbo jumbo typed into the handcent quick reply box. I always face my phones screen towards me, so if anything smashes my pocket, it hits the back of the phone! I guess a drawback to that though is you can activate your touch screen through your pants. It could also be the auto-screen-on caused by the handcent app itself, so when that mumbo jumbo gets typed into the quick reply box, it could be just that the screen never turned off because my leg had been touching it since it turned on.
Who knows.
Either way, it's become a necessity for me.

I've never once had it unlock in my pocket, besides you need to swipe afterwards anyway.
With all the reports of failed power buttons on nexus ones, you'd be crazy to use it to unlock your device 80 times per day. Track ball is much more robust.

Broken Power Button

Anyone else have a broken power button from regular day to day use?
Mine started acting up like 2 weeks ago. I noticed I had to press the power button more than once to turn the screen off/on. As the days went by the presses increased til it eventually gave out entirely this weekend as I landed in Vegas. I had to get someone to call my phone so I can turn the screen on and download "no lock" to enable trackball wake. I've also been paranoid about not letting the battery die since I won't be able to turn the phone on.
Calling Google/HTC tomorrow.
Btw, this is my second nexus one. First one had dead pixels. I had this second one maybe a month before the power button gave up!
Bummer.. Thought this might be a weak point in the design. Thanks for the heads up on "no lock". Will use that when @ home.
I've read about it happening a couple of times
Oh my god I'm having the same problem. Thought my N1's power button is now getting harder and harder to press to turn the screen on and off.
I was so angry about that, but after sometimes I figured out that the problem is not from the button (the hardware), it's because of the software. I dont know exactly from what apps which caused this, uninstalled some apps (especially apps for root only - which I thought are the main causes), but sometimes the problem occurs.
*Im using MCR r13.
And for your poor N1's button, I think it's broken because when facing with that trouble, you tried to press too hard... Bless your N1!
(Sorry for my bad english!)
Not A Software Problem...
The issue you are having is indeed a hardware problem. Well for the OP it is. I had a Nexus that was in the same situation. You can tell its not a hardware problem because if you remove the battery and put battery back in, the phone wont power up unless you press the power button like 8 to 10 times. That my friend is a hardware situation.
I created a small fix for mine. I should have created a youtube video of it lol. What I did was removed the back cover and batter and inbetween the Power Button and The Phone itself youll see like a small crack or very small gap of space between the phone and button. I stuck some small very small thin piece of paper in that gap. This will raise the buttun away from the phone just a lil bit. Put the battery back in and back cover back on. And noticed my button working 100% again.
So long story short the button itself starts to not make contact with the switch on the mother board or somethin. My bootloader was unlocked so i never got HTC involved. If your on cyan lates rom you can set it to wake via trackball under settings.
In the end, I ended up selling that N1 on craigslist for loot for a HD2 and HD2 was gargage (out dated OS and 65k color max display at LCD) and ended up selling the HD2 and got another nexus.
PS - I did have one of them argyle clear body cases on it that fit the N1 very snug and tightly, and wonder if that had somethin to do with power button goin out since it was rubbing against it repeatily.
same story happend to me, with a regular daily usage. It really bummers me, i unlocked the bootloader too, so i cant send it to HTC.
And I can't sell it in this condition too, sux!
Anyone with the same problem that sent it to HTC?
My wife had her's for about a week before having issues with the power button. Got a replacement and haven't had issues yet.
I had the same problem as the OP. Had to push the button several times to get the phone to respond.
HTC swapped my original N1 with dust under the screen and then sent me one that eventually had the power button crap out.
My GF's Nexus One has had no issues at all and we bought around the same time. My current (third) N1 is now rooted so I'm crossing my fingers that I won't need to deal with HTC again.
I love both the N1 and Android, but from my experience, I'm shocked and disappointed with it's poor build quality.

Wow... I'm shaking my head at this. You'd think HTC would have thought about this some more...
Crossing my fingers, cuz my power button still "works the first time, most of the time"..
Yea I gave myself a good month of testing this phone before even considering rooting and I'm glad I did.
My first unit was rooted and it was hell to get htc to support my fix over a dead pixel so naturally on my second phone I avoided rooting.
With the build quality on these phones (unfortunately) I would recommend NOT rooting for a good month or so to make sure you don't need warranty support.
I've ended up doing the repair option because I can never justify a $529 hold. Will get a ****ty flip phone loaner from Tmobile for the time being.
sorry to hear your issues but thank you for pointing out that app "no lock". I've been waiting for something like this! Now I can wake my Nexus with the volume button rather than the power button(wear and tear) or the trackball(it gets dirty from touching too much so I never do).
Have any app can replace power button?
I got a ****ty samsung flip phone loaner from tmobile. Ironically, I feel the call quality on these old phones are better than all the smart phones i've owned lol
Will this issue eventually happen to every one? That would be horrible..

I guess that all depends on how much people "baby" their phones. Then again, we all die eventually.. same with technology.

Phone was never dropped and was in one of those gel cases. I use my phone heavily but no more than I've used any of my other phones. That power button is definitely not made for heavy use. I'd hope froyo has a trackball awake feature because from what I read on the interweb this problem is definitely not exclusive to a select few people.
That really blows about the power button. I've heard of that alot now and feared it as well. I'd never heard of the "nolock" program so I'm really glad you mentioned it. Downloaded it and fired it up. Talk about a sweet program, I can't believe it flies to far under the radar. I'm not rooted so it's definately a great program as I wanted trackball wake. Plus you can create a widget on the desktop so you can toggle it off. Sorry about your phone but thanks for the program. I hope you get your phone fixed soon.
Wow a 1 day turn around. My phone should be back here tomorrow in the morning. Seems like HTC customer care is improving?

Eh TBH I've heard of iphones with the same problem. Manufacturing tolerances in any product inevitably produce a few faulty units...that's what the warranty is for.
Just be glad your N1 will never decide that its automatic backup is now encrypted and password-protected and that you can't use your phone until you figure out what the password you never set is (happened on my brother's iphone 3G)

Can you please explain how to remove the power button? Can it be removed alone or you have to remove all the screws and body of the phones?

[Q] power button doesn't work

hi guys i am one of the people who had water damage but the problem of my phone is different:
when the water entered in the phone i noticed the red stripe under the charger flap and the water behind the camera...
so i disassembled the back cover and i put into the rice for 2 days...now i have only one strange problem :the power button sometimes work and sometimes not and the up button work as volume+ and power button...the down button work properly :/
there risk of oxidation? what i should do?
P.S. i opened this topic because i didn t see other people with my same problem
Theres a few threads on water damage. Service centre job or use apps instead of hard keys.

TBH, I think the fact you need to be asking on here shows you don't have the technical aptitude for disassembling things so you might just have to live with the fact you've screwed your Phone unfortunately. Your initial problem is quite common but I've never seen it recommended to take the back off before putting it in rice.
There's definitely apps that can replace your power button features, as for volumes maybe there's a widget, just browse the Play Store.

Power Button Broken

Well it looks like my Z3C is broken, power button now does absolutely nothing. I was thinking it may have been a software issue so I tried to restart the phone pressing the yellow off button next to sim card slot, it turned the phone off but now I cant restart it. I was think maybe attaching power may restart the phone but it didn't.
If anyone got any advise getting the phone started again I would really appreciate it.

The Yellow but just turns it off.
I had something similar happen, where the phone just wouldn't react to anything. Nothing would turn it on, it seemed bricked. I thought it may have been some physical damage from sleeping on it, but really I doubt that's what caused it.
This morning after not touching it for 24 hours it magically started working again. The battery was fully drained for some reason (It was at 60% just before "dying"). I have no idea what caused it and what solved it...

Mine is 100% charged so maybe if phone went completely flat the phone would reboot when charging? I phone retailer tomorrow to see what I need to do to get it fixed. I've had phone for a month now so I don't think I'm entitled to a straight replacement?
I found this on Sony Support Forum, exactly same problem as me :- https://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z3-Compact/Power-lock-button-is-not-working/m-p/858455#U858455
Update:- I rang reseller they were happy to deal with repair with Sony but advised I contact Sony directly. I rang sony went over a few things I.e. Holding power button and vol up , no joy so I've gone through repair procedure. They estimate will take 2 weeks from day I send back to repair centre.
Anyone know how long Sony will take to repair the z3c, has anyone sent one in four repair and got it back?

Update Fixed
Just got my phone back from Sony Service, all is fixed, pretty good turn around, just 7 days.
A couple of negatives, the phone was reset so I've had to spend hours rebuilding my settings and apps, android restore didn't restore all my apps and Sony Backup just got my txt and phone logs back.
They either changed my screen protector or disturbed it because now there's a couple of specs off dust in the middle and by ear piece the screen preotector won't sit down. I've washed the screen protector and got rid off dust but the area round the earpiece is still not adhering to the glass so I guess the screen protector is creased slightly.
Any advice on a decent screen protector?
Cheers

Stiff power button anyone?

My power button has gone stiff on me, cant even feel the click anymore. Power button still works don't get me wrong, but it just feels really stiff and, cant even really full the button push down when you click on it.
Anyone have this issue? I'm pretty sure warranty covers it right? I dropped my phone a few times, no cracks or anything just a couple of scrapes, will this cause issues for warranty?

Yeah I have the same problem and my N6 isn't even a month old yet. But I've mostly tried to ignore it by using the double tap to wake mod. Although it has its drawbacks as its not 100% accurate.
would this be a warranty issue matter
Just return it if that bothers you. I've tried 6 units and no problem with them at all.

Problem with protection in pocket after G973FXXU1ASD5 update

Maybe skip commando day and wear underwear next time?
Turned on double tap to wake right after the update, because I was expecting the issue resolved.
Just couple days ago it was warm in my pants, check the phone and it was just finished doing factory reset. Been meaning to factory reset, so thanks Samsung!
So to say guys, when the screen is off and you cover the top of the phone while waking it (double tap or power button), the phone stays "protected" by avoiding wake up or unlock ?
My Exynos S10 doesn't care about it and wakes up normally regardless of the top being covered or not ...

That's exactly what I am facing.
It would be cool if users of the latest firmware confirm (or deny) the existence of the bug ...
I confirmed the bug by myself and was forced to disable double tap to wake as a workaround while waiting for a proper fix
