Has anyone given the AT&T apps a good try to see if any of them are good to keep?
I see instructions out there on how to wipe AT&T off of our phone, but haven't seen anybody comment on why they're wiping the apps off besides to "get rid of the AT&T apps".
I'm just wondering if there might not be one or two of the included apps that are actually worthwhile to keep.
I know one I won't be sorry to delete is the mobiTV one. I loaded it up to the welcome screen then had to step away for a couple minutes. When I came back it kindly told me my 2 minute trial was up... LOL nice! So yeah, unless it really is an incredible piece of software worth buying I'll be dumping that one at least.
Many if not all require additional fees and subscriptions, despite free alternatives.
For example, the AT&T navigator app is $10 a month, but Google Maps is free.
There's also the matter of principle... the fact that AT&T made them non-removable is a compelling reason to get rid of them.
The only at&t app worth using is the att my wireless app that you can down load from the market place. It lets you keep track of your minutes usage, data usage, and change your plan.

I agree. Funny thing is, that's the only app AT&T didn't preinstall on the phone IIRC. I guess they expect you to pay money for their crappy services by default (or by mistaken clicks), but don't want you to have a way to track it so easily.

You just staited my two primary reasons.
It is disgusting that AT&T forcefully occupies space on lesser phones with pay apps. Just appalling.
Well ok then, looks like I'll be clearing them all off! lol
i got rid of all my ATT apps lol

I'm not sure if it's an AT&T app, but the music player that comes on our phone is awesome!
I even started a thread asking if there was a way we could extract it or reinstall it after flashing a different rom. Hah. I like it.

This is a Samsung app. We'll get it in new ROMS.
Look at about 1:05 on this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3QwvMsBGjE
Yeah I have to say that music app is pretty nice.
Although I just installed one called "Moodagent" that is kind of neat. Haven't had a chance to fully explore it, but it appears to have quite a few features along with the main interface that's a bit gimicky, but cool. It has sliders that you adjust up or down (Sensual, Tender, Happy, Angry, Tempo) and it adjusts the playlist according to the levels you set. Probably old news to everyone else but interesting to me!
everything that is labeled att_nameofprogram is pretty much useless. the other programs like allshare or instant messaging may still be usefull.
Allshare
If you interest in using DLNA, the Allshare app may be a good one to keep. Although, I have one major problem with it: you can only add 1 song at a time to the Queue. What a pain.
But I haven't found any good alternatives yet.
I opened the 'Where' app, and (stupidly) breezed past some part about a monthly charge if I don't cancel. Has anyone else run into this? And if so, do you know how to cancel?
"Where" does AT&T get the idea they can charge for this?
You probably want to call AT&T ASAP to make sure you don't get charged for using the Where app. Also, stop using the included one and download the free one!
Funny story about the Where app:
I had a Nexus One and saw that Where was on a lot of "best app" lists for Android so I went to the market to get it. It was nowhere to be found. After a bit of research, I found some vague explanation about how AT&T had a deal with Where and that they blocked it. This really pissed me off since I paid full price for the N1 with no subsidy from AT&T -- how dare they block apps? Anyway, I found the APK online and installed it.
Later, I rooted my phone and installed the MarketAccess app. Now I could find Where in the Market and installed it from there -- still free of course. When I got the Captivate, the first thing I did was root it. When I saw that Where was pre-installed, I thought "great, now I don't have to jump through hoops to get it." Luckily I saw the warning about being charged, what, $2.99/month to use an app that is free for every user of every other Android phone? I promptly used Titanium Backup to remove the pre-installed version and then used MarketAccess to download the free version from the Market.
The point is that AT&T is really trying hard to charge extra for things that every other Android user gets for free (maps, navigation, Where, etc). Very frustrating. My employer pays for the service on my Captivate and I will be moving my wife's phone (that I pay for) to the Epic 4G at the end of this month after being an AT&T customer for 7 years.
What about AT&T Hot Spots?
I visit Starbucks frequently and occasionally McDonalds. Both offer free WiFi, but require you to check a box and click a button to agree to terms before using it. I know that's not a big deal, but it is a little bit of a hassle especially if I am not planning to use the browser anyway -- I just want to go straight into another app that uses WiFi.
Since I got the Captivate, I've noticed that as soon as I turn on WiFi while at either of these places, I get a notification that says "AT&T Hotspot Detected" or something like that and I am able to use WiFi without having to visit the agreement page in the browser.
Does anyone know whether this app is required for this detection and agreement bypass to function? I have thought about making a backup with Ti Backup, uninstalling, and testing it but am worried that it might not reinstall properly. Also, it might be handy for finding hotspots when traveling -- making it the only useful AT&T pre-installed app.
ATT wifi hotspot app seems to be useful to connect to Attwifi hotspots without having to manually agree to terms
does anyone have a copy of it ?

I have it and will try to make a backup and post it within the next couple of days. It might be Monday before I can do it, unless someone else beats me to the punch.
Update: I still have it on my phone, but it seems that Titaniun Backup only backs up the data, not the APK. I also tried Mybackup Pro with the same result. I have root, so if someone knows how to extract a system app as an APK please let me know. I haven't searched yet, BTW, so if I find out how to do this myself I'll update this post (again).

I swear they are only doing that to mess with us. While it's not hard to completely remove all AT&T ware, it's fairly simple to hide the apps with LauncherPro.

Here is the APK (zipped). I'm not sure whether you can just install it like any other APK or if you have to use adb to push it to /system/app. If you try it please let me know what worked (if it works).

Any suggestions for the best mobile recovery app? Looking for something that I can activate if i lose my phone, to either turn on GPS, send location, lock and/or remote wipe.
Thanks in advance!
Lookout Security
Sent from my Mosaic using XDA App
Yep. Nice. I've used Lookout for AV before, but forgot it had the remote recover features. I just tested it and it's perfect for my needs. The free version, allows you to remotely locate as well as make the device scream.
For reference sake, cause it was important to my since the Cappy doesn't have the best battery when gps is enabled.... I have the gps radio turned off and when you login to the Lookout site and click Locate, it remotely turnes on your gps, locates your device, then turns your gps back off. Freaking amazing!
Thanks again!

I've just been blasted by my boss for allowing an executive buy a galaxy note.
The primary reason appears to be poor security in Android.
My understanding is that Android has a few weaknesses around bad apps but it's not "intrinsically" unsecure... Is it?

as long as you check permissions before installing a new app, you'll be fine. ie. if a game asks to make calls and send SMS, obviously its a trap.
if youre concerned, there are some security apps around.

I had to wait for Android 2.2 to finally offer passcodes (PIN, passwords options instead of patterns that some people could figure out by looking at finger oil patterns on the off screen ; see Settings->Security->Screen lock)
Under Applications make sure "Unknown sources" is not checked which would allow installation of non-Market applications unless the user trusts the source for a particular app that has not yet made it to market ( for example I had to temporarily check it to install TeamViewer before they had an official market app then unchecked it right after to return it to its default state).
I installed free security app Lookout (see description) iOS devices can locate, sound-message, lock & wipe remotely which should be standard free features of Android IMO but at least Lookout offers locate-alarm, contact backup-restore for free with remote lock-wipe & advanced backup as a premium feature in addition to antivirus-malware security.
Android market is not as closed as iOS app store's walled garden so look at permissions as mentioned particularly when the apps are not from a big reputable company but I still prefer Android's open model with aforementioned caveats. Lastly rooting phones could make them vulnerable. Any other apps people recommend?
I just ordered a HTC 8x (keeping my 32gb SIII for now) from Verizon and had a few questions. I have not used a Windows phone since my HTC TP2 - which I loved until the HTC Incredible came out. Is there an app that allows WiFi tethering - like FoxFi? I don't use it all that much but when I travel it is nice. I am grandfathered in to unlimited so the tiered plans are not an option. I also use mass txt messages several times (13 team members) a week and I am currently using GoSMS to do it. I am hoping there is a similar app that allows mass txting on Windows Phone OS - stock would be great. Does the wireless charging system use more power than the traditional hard wired cables?
Looking forward to WM8 & thanks all for any help!
Currently
On WP8 only way to tether (I could be wrong) is to pay carrier extra fee. I am waiting on another option as well, and as far as mass text you can do that in the groups setting I send out text to 16 people at a time for basketball games and such. And the room feature seems to be nice but I haven't used it yet. There is also http://xyo.net/lumia/ which will tell you what apps are somewhat equivalent.
WP8 -- in settings has an option for internet sharing (no app needed) that provides up to 5 other devices (at least on my 920 with AT&T). I assume that this is a general option in WP8 ...
I have the shared data plan that allows tethering, so I am not sure if networks need to have it allowed in order to use it ...
But, the option is there without the need of an app ...

wi-fi tethering is a built-in feature in WP8 (since WP7.5) - it's called "internet sharing". i have no problem with at&t, using my nokia 920 as a wi-fi AP for my notebook and my ms surface rt. i can even go remotely to my work computer through VPN.
you can create a group, adding anybody from your contacts. after that you can send email or text sms to all the contacts from this group - just by one click.
and yes, you don't need any additional applications for these features.

i've been a t-mobile customer, and now i'm an at&t client. i didn't pay anything additional for using my phone as a modem (through bluetooth or wi-fi, whatever) and i'm not paying now. the only payment you should be aware of - for the data, you use. i subscribed to a data shared mobile plan in at&t - $90/mo for 6Gb shared data (plus unlimited voice and text) for up to 10 (i believe) lines (i use 4) plus $35/mo per device. i pay $225/mo for 3 smartphones and 1 simple phone. we've never overlimited our 6Gb plan. though if you do, it costs $15/1Gb.
the room is a cool feature, but it works only for WP-phones. but as i said you can group your contacts to be able to email or text all of them by one click.
I think on Verizon unless I am on the Share all plan I am not allowed to use the wifi/bluetooth tethering. At least without an app like FoxFi. Speaking of contacts... how are they managed on WP8? I will go out on a limb and say iCloud is definitely out and probably so is Gmail... hope its that easy.

While the SIII is a great device it is NOT the end all of phones. There are still plenty of force closes and lock ups on the device. I am just wanting to try something different and I have been looking forward to WM8 for a long time. Here's hoping.
^ you might want to read the WPcentral forums, and the iPhone forums, as they do the same lock ups and force closes.

the only way to avoid lockups is turning off these phones.
I don't think I've had a lock up or app crash on Windows Phone. They were all too common on iOS though.
But can we leave all the playground arguments over best platform to some other forum? they're only phones at the end of the day.

You're the first person in this thread to mention best platform, no one is arguing.
Crashes are present in Windows Phone as well, but are less obvious as the system simply closes down the app without saying a word.
In most cases, crashes are due to the poorly written app and not the system.
Although I have a killer wifi and university that restarts my phone lol.

After reading several of your posts, I still can't figure out if you are a WP8 supporter or not.
Either way, I have been on Android for my entire cell phone career for several years and most recently had the GS3. I can't even tell you how many force closes I have had from apps, lag and slowdown because of horrible resource management of the OS, dalvik cache slowdown, etc. I rooted all of my devices and was heavily into the technical side of things.
I never had an iPhone but have played with many. Never was my cup of tea, but I won't talk bad about it since I simply don't know enough.
I finally grew tired of it all and purchased a HTC 8X last week. I can tell you that WP8 OS is such a breath of fresh air coming from Android. There is absolutely no lag or slowdown whatsoever....ever. I can pop in and out of apps, do whatever I want and it constantly stays smooth. No ram dumps or reboots required. I also have not had a single force closed app or random reboot like some people have reported. It has been an absolute flawless experience so far.
Just thought I would post some positive energy after a lot of negative. Is WP8 a lot more simple than Android? Yes. Is it a bad thing? No. It's such a seamless and smooth experience that I'm not sure I can' go back to Android at this point. At least not for a while. YMMV.
You quote me why? Who was negative? Just stated a fact, dont be so defensive.

I'm not being defensive at all. Just stating my opinion based on your quote. The other reason why I quoted you is that I've seen you all throughout this WP8 forum sort of talking down on WP8. Just curious as to why and which side you are on. Not saying you have to pick a side or you can't talk down on WP8, but just curious.
What have I said down? That it lock ups? Is that a lie? App crashes? Is that a lie?How about random reboots? I could go and mention a host of other things but there is no point.
So don't quote me with baseless rhetoric.

Can you please test it and let us know. Its a 7 day free trial but we can offert a full refund if someone want to buy it, we do not want to take any profit for xda members helping us to test our app.
Tha app is Smart Unlock and extends dafault smart lock functionality by adding wifi trusted devices.
Hope you like it and it works properly on nexus 6, thanks for testing.

You're doing it wrong. A 'free' app that you have to pay for is stupid. If you're going to charge for it, just charge for it. Making it a mandatory in-app purchase is stupid. If you want to do a 7 day trial, extend the refund windows for your customers. There's nothing worse than trialware.
FREE software! Just kidding, it's a trial, then you can pay for it! Lame.

Hey.
The app is a paid add. We offer a 7 days trial to test and check compatibility.
Im not here for selling apps, I´m here asking for testing on nexus 6. If I have to give free copies I will do it, no problems.
We are also considering a XDA version of theis app limited in number of secure devices and no in time. But is not decided yet. In this case would be completelly free.

No, you're doing exactly what I've stated. You're offering a 'free' app, with in-app purchases. However, the 'in-app purchase' is the app itself. So it's forced. You either pay for it after 7 days, or it doesn't work. If your app is going to be paid, make people pay for it up front. Don't be sneaky trying to get your app listed as free when it's really not.

Time trials is a normal practice in android to let user try the app carefully before purchase. Is stated in the first line of our description at google play. I can understand is not accepted at XDA developers forum, thats why we are creating a new exclusive version of the app, but inapp purchases (time limted) are very common on google play.
We are working on a XDA version, limited on number of secure devices (probably 2) and no limited in time. Exclusive for XDA members.
Do you thinks this would be enought?
I would like to listen your suggestions.

I heard what he said. It's not a matter of me not understanding. I know exactly what is happening here.
I just hate the whole "free, but not really" app model. Trial or not, if you're going to make me pay for it, I want to do it up front, not through some in-app purchase. I'd rather pay for it, then have an available 7-day refund window. This is not so much a personal preference, as a marketing conception. What you're doing is giving someone something for free, then making them pay for it after they decide they like it. What you COULD be doing is making someone pay for something, then offering them a refund well past the google refund window if they decide they don't like it. While it's essentially the same thing, the perception is that you're going above and beyond what other developers are willing to do by extending their refund window.
My personal opinion is that if I'm going to have to pay for something, I want to pay for it when I get it. A trial is good, but I think the delivery needs work.
why would i want to pay for something that Google already provides built in? i wouldn't feel safe knowing that a wifi ssid can be spoofed if this app were using it to unlock (which is the exact reason why Google didn't put that into their Google Play Services). seems like nothing more than a way to separate stupid people from their money.

Smart Unlock is already built in to Android 5.0

why would i want to pay for something that Google already provides built in? i wouldn't feel safe knowing that a wifi ssid can be spoofed if this app were using it to unlock (which is the exact reason why Google didn't put that into their Google Play Services). seems like nothing more than a way to separate stupid people from their money.

Many people is haveing issues with "Trusted places" in android built in smart lock.
With Smart Unlock we add WIFIs using MAC address wich is not easy to spoof (and is ilegall), specially if you dont now the AP mac that you want to spoof.
Personally I find our app more reliable than native smart lock and, instead of smart lock, this app can also be used with android 4.1+
Thanks for your time and suggestions.

We have been thinking about your comment . I do not completelly agree with you, but you are right in some points. We will modify our bussiness model for this app. The app at Google Play will have 1 or 2 trusted devices, always, for free. If you want to add more trusted devices you will have to pay and get the full version for unlimited number of devices. Anyway, we will make a special version for XDA members, unlimited in time and limited with 2 or 3 trusted devices.
To get back on topic - no, it doesn't seem like Smart Unlock works with the Nexus 6. At least not the way it should.
In Lollipop, you see the regular (slide) lock screen before you see the Pattern/PIN/Password lock screen. So you swipe up, then enter your passcode.
With the stock implementation of Smart Lock, when you're connected to a trusted device, you still see the slide lock screen - you just don't get the secure lock screen. This app bypasses both the slide and the secure lock screen when enabled and connected to a trusted environment, meaning if you press the power button to wake the device, you're immediately shown your home screen. Pocket dialing and other similar accidents are almost guaranteed with this app installed.
I think it's because of the relationship between forced encryption and lock screen security on the Nexus 6. Since the N6 is encrypted by default, but no pattern PIN or password is set as the decryption method yet, everything defaults to "default-password". But when you set up a secure lock screen for the first time on the Nexus 6, this becomes your new decrpytion password. Since the Nexus 6 does not give you the option to un-encrypt your data, it will not allow you to switch back to "Slide" as your lock screen method, since that would remove the decrpytion password. It grays out the option entirely, and only a factory reset will bring it back.
Amazingly enough, I figured all of that out without having to make any in-app purchases. If this were a paid app to begin with instead of your current business model, I would have been reluctant to buy it in the first place knowing that you can't re-enable the "Slide" lock screen once you've enabled a secure one, and that ultimately, this probably wouldn't work on my device. So thanks for giving me a 7-day free trial and explicitly stating that in your app's description, which is a fair and reasonable business practice despite what other people and their half-baked, thread-derailing agendas may tell you.

Hi!
We can not keep slide at trusted enviroments due to technical dificulties. We may be able to do it only on rooted devices, but we prefer to keep our app simple.
I was not aware about encryption on nexus 6 after configuring secure lock, but you are right and we can not revert this proccess.
About the bussiness model , we are not sure if in the market will keep the trial as it is now, but for sure we will publish, in a couple of hours, a XDA version for testing purposes with unlimited time and up to 3 trusted devices.
Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it
Hello, I have created an app thread with a XDA version of the app not limited in time.
If anyone is interested here is the app thread.
Thanks for your testing time!

Will test on nexus 6 and let u know... Google smart unlock does not use wifi. It uses location knowledge which can consume more battery. Anyway if this works, it will be perfect for my needs
Does this app drain the battery huh
Via my NeXus™ 7FHD on XDA Premium app
