Please can you tell me how to install a new kernal through odin?
most kernels here have a CWM version which you can flash without odin, I recommend that!
There is also an app called "sgs kernel flasher" which allows you to flash a kernel right within the running phone!
If you want to use odin, chose pda and no repartion and no pit...

Have you used Odin before ?
1. Put phone in to download mode
2. do not connect phone to usb
3. start odin, select your kernel.tar in the pda selection
4. uncheck re-partition - check auto reboot
5. connect phone to usb - odin will diplay "added" in the txt scroll
6. press start
7. Odin will do it thing & if successful will display a "success 1/failed 0" line in the txt scroll
8. phone will reboot & your good to go.
Remember you do this at your own risk
Thankyou very much

I've never been flashing ROM before. I'm using eclair with voodoo lagfix.
I want to install my initial ROM (DXJG4). I plan to do the following :
1. Disable lagfix (voodoo). Reboot
2. Enter download mode
3. Using Odin, install PDA tar.md5 using .512 pit
4. Do I need to check "Re-partition" box? what is the difference between check or uncheck re-partition?
5. Do I need to check "phone EFS clear" box ?
6. Do I need to re-install Phone and CSC tar.md5 ?
Is it the right thing?
thank you very much for helping me out..
CM9 nice but not ready .... ok, because I'm a noob I have a big problem. I have my new SGS (i9000 3.2.3firmware) with cf-root 2.6 from here (*http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108*). Yesterday put CM9 on it from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363593) .. and this morning I do not like it..*so I open cwm and tap to restore from backup ... now my galaxy wont open again... what can i do now??
and odin can see my phone in download mode....
sorry for my bad english, i can speek only greek and german...
did you have a backup to begin with?
if odin can see your phone in download then just flash another rom
It doesn't work because the stock partitions are different to CM9. Flash a stock version of whatever you had before in odin with repartition, then a kernel. Then you should be able to restore your backup from CWM
As posted above. The partitions between CM & stock are different. I did exactly what you did. With the same result.
You can get a stock rom from here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/
Once you have a stock rom you need to use Odin to install it. You will need to have all three files & the pit file. (phone, modem, csc, pit - 512).
Make sure Kies is not running & open Odin. Click re-Partition. Click PIT & select your pit file, Click PDA & select file with PDA in name, click phone select file with phone in name, click CSS & select file with CSC in name.
Once you are ready with this start phone in download mode. Once in download mode attach phone to usb cable wait for top left corner to go green & click start.
This can take some time but once complete phone should restart. At this point my phone got stuck (either boot loop or black screen I can't remember)
If this happens don't panic just remove phone from USB & restart odin. Now make sure re-partition is unchecked & select the three previous files again, don't select pit file. Again put phone in download mode (you may need to pull battery first) wait for Odin to be ready & click start. This time when the phone reboots it should start although this can take a little longer than usual.
Once started I always like to reboot a couple times & clear cache & do factory reset in recovery.

try thisone:

and you could search for ics-roms instead of 2.3.4
my suggestion:

Here are some links for going to 2.3.6 and rooting your phone.
How to Install Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread Value Pack on Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000
Download CF-Root for JVU
CF-Root Installation Instructions in Post #1
Install XXJVU firmware - Here
Then Install Semaphore 2.5.0 - Thread Here - Direct Link to Semaphore 2.5.0 Here
Note that XXJVU isn't the latest 2.3.6 firmware, XXJW6 is. If you wanted to install that then the procedure is essentially the same you'll just need the XXJW6 files and CF-root or semaphore kernel for XXJW6 (i'm not sure if there is a semaphore kernel for XXJW6). But running a rooted XXJVU firmware is good enough, especially if you're gonna flash a custom rom. There aren't many differences between XXJVU and XXJW6
Here's some detailed instructions on the process;
Before you flash:
1.Backup all your important files and data
2. Download the JVU stock firmware and the (Download links provided above)
3. Make sure your phone is fully charged.
4.Disable and kill the Kies process from task manager in windows on your pc. It will interupt the flashing process.

You can't power it on? No download mode? If no download mode, then you probably hardbricked it. Try USB jig or go to service center.
ty sir for the answer i will try usb jig
