I am in search of a new rom for my Captivate. I am a noob dealing with android roms but I use to flash windows roms on my touch HD all the time.
I am looking to update to froyo 2.2 but need help determining which rom to pick. (sick of weighting for the att update)
Things I need working.
1. Bluetooth activated voice commands. (android voice action via BT)
2. Working GPS
3. good battery
4. 3g
5. smooth running
Anyone’s suggestions would be helpful.
Thank you all.

Hi, is very difficult to help you because almost all roms are the same. Some fast, other not so fast but very stable... I've try them all but no one has fullfill my needs. I've been using android since last november (before I use Win Mob on my HTC HD2), right now I'm using axura 2.5, but I've benn having trouble with wifi and since there is no more axura development I have to chose a new one. I hope that samsung will realease soon an oficial upgrade for the captivate, I've always preffer stock's rom's but captivate stock rom is disappointing.
Try Gingerborg 7.5. Very fast, battery lasts very long and quite stable. GPS also locks in pretty good.
This question is asked frequently and its really hard to answer. Its really a matter of preferrence. I-9000 based roms have become very popular due to all the improvements in 2.2.1. I've flashed almost every rom and even though they're all similar there are different advantages to each one. Ex: I ran DG roms for a while and had great performance but very poor battery life. No matter what I did my battery was terrible. Darky's ROM worked great but gave me a sim error multiple times. I decided to stick with Cezar's ROM and I think this is my new permanent ROM. I really like the level of support he offers and all his ROM's are designed for his personal use and they're extremely well put together. I've been on his ROMs for over a month and I have never had issues and battery life is AWESOME. Nothing wrong with other roms bur to put it simply when I flash Cezar's I feel like I'm shopping at wholefoods. Flashing everything else I get a Walmart experience
You want a worry free, fast, stable rom with great battery life flash cezar's. If you like to trouble shoot and experiment try all others. I'm in no way affiliated with Cezar. I just happen to be a huge fan of his work! Hope that helps.
Ps. I'm on Continuum Se all R tweaks enabled. 2 1/2h non stop internet browsing and downloading and I'm sitting and 75% battery. That's UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

What works for my phone may not work as great on your phone. I recommend you try many ROMs, only then will you know what truly works well for your phone.
And i think you posted at the wrong place. haha...
Without a doubt I would say the latest cognition rom available. I flash roms quite often and without a doubt I would say that the latest cognition has been.my.smoothest froyo experience yet.
Captivated using the XDA App
Hi guys,
I've flashed CM6.1 ROM (Froyo 2.2) to my Milestone a few weeks ago - and was enjoying it till one day I accidentaly hard reset and noticed that I have also removed the default launcher from ROM. So I had black screen and nothing appears after the phone was booted.
Well I could just have copied a launcher over from the PC, but I decided to restore my Nandroid backup.
To my surprise, the backup was the stock 2.1 Eclair ROM. So I was frustrated a bit to lose Froyo.
But after using Eclair 2.1 for a week or so, I have never enjoyed using the Milestone as much as this. It's fast and responsive, better than when I had Froyo.
I wanted to ask - is it true that Eclair 2.1 IS faster than Froyo, or did I flashed a slow Froyo ROM? In terms of memory management is great too. I can open more apps and keep them running than I can remember with my Froyo. With Froyo, I've encountered like foreground app close, and changing from one app to another will eventually killed the last app and had to load it back.
Or can someone recommend a very fast and good memory management of Froyo ROM for my milestone? Or it's really - Ok let's cut the crap and go straight to the point - Eclair that's leading in this race (and I've won?). Edit : The Eclair won!
I do miss the Flash 10 on Froyo... sigh, if only I can get it on Eclair still.
Thanks.

Update: Well it's not a true-not-true anymore but it is TRUE that Eclair does run much faster than Froyo or Gingerbread. I'm using Telus 5.2 Eclair and I just can't believe the speed that I'm getting (it's like Milestone on steroid!). See my post on 2nd page. And no I'm not with Telus or related or what, but I highly recommend this ROM to Eclair users out there. This is definitely a keeper! I've also covered about the battery life and tempreture on the post on 2nd page. Have a read, and don't hesitate to flash Telus, you will never regret it. Now I am more hesitate to flash over to Froyo or Gingerbread even more after using it! Hey, I feel like I can outbeat a Tegra even
-
Update: First of all I'm renaming this thread from "Milestone 2.1 Eclair faster than 2.2 Froyo" to "Discussion - Fastest 2.1 ROM for Milestone".
I saw some users asking about where this Telus 5.2 Eclair is.. so I'm providing the link here > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717377.
No I am not associated with the dev who made that ROM or whatsoever, and I am not duplicating the thread. Merely suggesting the fastest 2.1 ROM available (currently), for those who are not the 'wait and obey' users of Milestone, but to the 'commander' users of this device. Continuous discussions about which is the fastest 2.1 ROMs are still welcomed here, and of course, any ROM comparison discussions with other various versions (eg. 1.6, 2.2, 2.3, 3.0??) should head over here >http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029887
I haven't used Eclair in a long time but I remember how clad i was when I flashed a custom ROM for a first time (some Cm7 nightly) and on my case my milestone felt blazing fast even with bad memory management and I "promised" I never go back to stock eclair and have kept that promise. I'm now running FroyoMod 2.6.1b and this is probably the most stable rom I've ever had and if u haven't tried it then u should because it just might me the rom that ur looking for when it comes to stability and capabilities.

Hey MakeW00t , sounds interesting. But fast alone isn't enough for me. Good memory management plays a vital role as well. I just hate to see vital apps (eg. navigational software) got killed just because I had to read my SMS or check a few things on the calendar!
Anyway, thanks for your recommendation. Maybe I'll flash FroyoMod 2.6.1b when I feel Eclair is not enough.
I've been through that before "I never go back to stock eclair" But now that I had it back.. I can't see any reason NOT to..

Same here, it is nice to have a PHONE again, and Eclair makes it real... Sad but true... I tried and tested almost all mods available on this forum (including official stock froyo update and Froyo Mod 2.6, which unfortunately also appears to be frustrating and sluggish after only 2-3 days of intensive use, without too much apps installed at all!)... must admit that my personal favorite is MIUI by lalit79 (recommendations, great job done lalit!), but after some serious stability/speed issues in latest version (overheating during battery charge, ext2/4 not working whatever method I tried, FCs), Eclair is the ultimate choice of the moment (I need a stable and reliable device, for calls and long bussines emails, no crashes or FC-s or reboots)... at least, until a new MIUI version is ready... If you already didn't, try rooting and overclocking eclair with milestone OC (@900/56) - it gives a nice final touch of ultimate speed and joy of "Phone Without Compromise" (and official froyo is one BIG compromise, if you ask me)....
cheers!
Hi mcekic. Well as a matter of fact I did OC my Milestone using Milestone Overclock to 1000Mhz, 69vsel. Battery life is ok so I guess I'll stick with it for a while (If not I will use your 900/56, should give me more battery life - logically).
I believe I have the same needs as you, to have a real PHONE again!
Don't get me wrong, Froyo does have all the extra functionalities (I miss App2SD and Flash 10 the most - but I heard that this is possible on Eclair as well? Havn't done my homework yet in regards to this) but in the end, all that functionalities goes to waste when the performance is sacrificed.
I have also OC'ed the phone to 1Ghz when I was running Froyo. But I think the main culprit is the memory management. It just can't stop killing apps, and when it does, the phone felt slow. I used Autokiller, that helped a bit, but Eclair still wins.
Now, does anyone knows the best Eclair ROM ? I need a naked ROM if available. Whoa now that would be super fast!
Guys, I think this thread would fit in this one very well:

Roms: Continuous comparison of milestone roms and updates
well s0ulreaver, now that you mentioned it, I do think this discussion would very well belong there.
Can any mod possibly merge this?
I think Froyo is so heavy for MS. But in another view, it's not too bad.
Did you try stock ROM from Motorola?
Except DSI, I think it's acceptable. You can run at 550MHz without any problem.
With CM6, I have to OC at 750.
But now I use it for daily uses, because it's very convenience.

yup, went back to eclair after several froyo/gb roms (cm6, froyomod, miui, cm7).

i tried stock 2.1 from moto germany but then switched to telus lite 5.2 with a gb skin. it runs smooth and stable like a rock and can handle multiple apps in mem (facebook, maps, opera and minor stuff like talk, gmail, etc at the same time).
besides the skin it is pretty vanilla and wields all the nice stuff like overclocking and the cache hack.
Eclair is the best. i overclocked at 800Mhz with 58 Volts. Its smooth and no bugs/issues. It never restarts and works just fine.

You mean stock Froyo ROM from Motorola? No I haven't tried it yet, but I saw this guy here posted Froyo stock running flash 10.2 on his Milestone overclocked to 1.2Ghz and it runs great
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaCspAW8RzA
i have never saw flash video that plays so smooth on the Milestone - and am happy to see one! I'm gonna try Froyo stock when i have the time, but of course, I need to do a Nandroid backup first
What's a DSI?

Well, I believe you're an experienced custom froyo ROM user then. For me I didn't have the time to flash that many froyo ROMs to test. But hey, I guess you've saved my time by sharing your experience with it right
Cool, I should not be doing much this weekend so I think I'll make up some time to flash telus lite 5.2 - The most important thing for me is to have a reliable phone, and a responsive one as well. Based on your recommendation, I think telus lite 5.2 fits the bill. Will try it out and give my opinion on it later. Thanks!

btw: if you want a gingerbread-look on telus lite (as the default skin and fonts are ugly imho) try "better gingerbread theme for 2.1". just make sure you delete settings.apk and motocardock.apk in the skin update zip.

Thanks, hey, as a matter of fact, let me try this on my stock 2.1 ROM.
A bit update on my 2.1 stock, when downloading big files over 100MB via browser and saving to SDCard, my phone will eventually be in the 'sleep of death' mode where it sleep and will never turn on again - unless I remove and reinsert the battery of course. Not sure what's causing this.
Update : It was my MicroSD card which been causing this. It's corrupted somehow or rather ...
Another issue is that when I record videos and battery is low, during the end of recording, the phone will hang. Tried this several times when the battery is low (about 15% charge left), and confirmed that is the issue - why? possible cause maybe not enough power to process / save these videos? Snapping pictures works ok. On some devices (especially Samsungs), camera and video function will be denied access when battery is low. I guess this could be the issue unless anyone else have not run into this problem before?
hmm now i really want to go back to eclair, cm7 is to big for the milestone
Indeed, Telus Lite 5.2 is the way to go. Very good stability and speed.
Darn... I've just flashed Telus 5.2 last Sunday and it's TRUE that this is the fastest ROM available for the Milestone!
I just can't believe the speed that I'm getting. I feel that I can outbeat a Tegra even! Hahahaha..
The phone (compared to stock 2.1) is also cooler when tethering. I used to get up around 46c - 57c, with the Telus I'm getting like 34c - 47c with wifi tether on.
In terms of battery life. After 13hrs 10minutes, my battery went down from 100% to 50%. Edge was turned on all the time. 15minutes of Wifi tether with HSDPA on. 30minutes of fb and websurfing. 15 minutes on Papago GPS. Some SMS and whatsapp plus yahoo messenger runnin all the time as services. Not bad.
Highly recommended for Eclair users!
AFAIK though, nobody has been able to get app2ext working in Telus Lite.
People have gotten app2ext work with stock eclair though. (1 of these days, I plan to go back to rooted, OC'd, GOT sbf eclair. I assume that app2ext will work as GOT is heavily based on the stock eclair sbf.)

GOT Eclair is Stock Eclair, it is a Leak of the official Firmaware. only change is the vulnerable recovery afaik.
rest of GOT specific modifications are applied through OR! was one of the best Eclair FW's i tried (for the first time my alarm and geolocation service were working ; )

yeah i tried Eclair too again, rly a difference in speed, but some features brought me back to CM6.
imo there are good reasons to go back and stay at eclair, but there are also good reasons to stay on froyo tbh.
+speed speed speed
+multitasking
+battery life
-no flash
-old google apps some can't be updated (gmail, youtube)
-no "2 finger Map Rotation Maps"
Is anyone going to stay with the older 2.2 Froyo instead of upgrading to Gingerbread?
I have heard some programs/games don't work with the Gingerbread OS.
Took the plunge, and glad I did, I so loved Gingerbread on my HD2.
Now it works great on the SGT,
Hope, no significant issues with Overcome Gingerbread so far, loving it, can't wait for more updates to come.
having no major issues. so stable. less forceclose on gb and no screen-freeze.
anyway, for those who chose to stay with froyo 2.2, what are the reasons?
what are the apps that did not work on gb? cause so far all my games and apps are working(excluding new google music app). quite happy with it.
just made the update some hours ago, loving it, very fast, battery better than ever, pretty stable.
No major issues for me. Some old annoyances were removed (like lags)
I flashed back to 2.2. There is a thread that lists all.the problems it has.

im staying on Overcome 1.4.7 until a proper kernel is released for gingerbread overcome. I want it to have EXT4, voodoo, OC/UV before i jump ship. plus i haven't beaten some of the gameloft games that have been said to be incompatible with it. Loving my tab on this rom so much i can't believe it can get even better with gingerbread...but apparently it can as most of the guys on the thread claim. That would be awesome.
mixed feelings, I want to take the plung but keen to wait for the overcome kernel too, so even if i flash it, it will only be a matter of a few days before i have to reflash.
Overcome 1.6.4 is great, no issues, GPS is quick on locking, Battery is excellant and over all the best version cooked!
But as the man says, the best is yet to come, so i may look at doing it because it's inevitable!
PEACE
Kosti
Overcome Gingerbread seems to have some graphics problem for me right now, i see it when playing 1080p video trailer. Overcome 1.64 --> smooth like butter, 2.0 --> stuttering and even crashing the clips
I'm rolling back to 1.6.x
Am sticking to 1.4.5 everything works fine....wayyyyy better than stock or any other rom..and don't forget Vodooo sound... .and GB seems to have major battery problems and a berserk Android OS process problem...so will stick to it till Overcome GB's out of beta ands few versions up...

Stock browser. All the Market browsers don't compare to it. Best stock browser I've seen on an Android device.
I hate reflashing every couple of days. I'm on OC 1.6.4.
I'm happy with it. When GB has new kernel and is polished I'll flash it.
Well i just shift to ginger that is published by chainfire here and i am pretty happy with it. The battery is way better than it was for me with the 1.6 overcome. Also i really enjoyed new few animations and fonts as well i am happy with the change. But just for future shifting i just bought sd card today ) (my 1st sd card burned with my board lol)
I'm still sticking with overcome 1.4.x series until an overcome GB kernel is released. My battery easily lasts 12-14 hours with ~7hours pandora at work with the screen off, then a hours of browsing/gaming at home.
Since battery life isn't a problem, I just don't feel like taking the time to do a backup + re-stock + flash + restore apps unless there is a must-have addition in GB or a "final-ish" version of overcome.
Hi,
I own my galaxy for like 3 weeks now.
The first 2 weeks I was running stock 2.2.1, and had sudden reboots (it even entered into safe mod once I was sleeping and woke up from the sound the phone was doing), force closes.
So I decided and installed deodexed stock rom with speedmod kernel (+lagfix and recommended tweaks), and I feel that my phone is still bad. Angry birds keeps freezing the phone, wifi errors, and I can't run my phone more than 50hrs of uptime, it either will randomly reboot or as it happens today simply turns it self off and wont let me to turn in on (or getting into recovery/download mode).
When this phone was out everybody said its awesome (fast, stable etc) and I waited for prices to get down, now when I finally got it I think that I made a mistake.
Is anybody else frustrated with their phone? Am I doing something wrong? Maybe I should I hope that samsungs gingerbread will fix this? Or
maybe I should try custom rom like Darky or CM7?
Maybe all smartphones sucks and I dont know it because I never had a smartphone before?
Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot!
is it a new or used one mate ??????
i had it for 1 year now its the best
Its a new one of course.
Are you running any custom rom/kernel?
the beauty of SGS and Android is the continuous evolution of the ROMs you install...
I tried many different ROMs , and I am sure you would finally find something that will make you happy with the machine...
for a start, if you are on 2.2.1, get Darky 9.5 and you wont be disappointed.
Your phone is faulty. I had the device on stock froyo for 4 months after buying it and I never had random reboots or wifi issues.
Definitely take it back. I've modded mine so many times and still looks new to me. Had mine since January of this year.

By take it back, he meant to send the phone back for repairs or replacement under warranty to Samsung.
I have no problem with my phone, the only thing i dont like is the free ram available... seem low to me
@timelessfahad Thanks for clearing that up.
@vanvn297 You are running a stock 2.2.1 ROM?
Hi,
I recently updated via kies from stock 2.1 to stock 2.2 HVJP4.
So far I'm not impressed with the stock froyo rom. It's often sluggish and apps, especially email from exchange, crash reguarly.
I have not experienced any problems with wifi or 3g reception however.
I'm still trawling the forum, trying to find all the info and confidence to backup the current rom and try something different, but there's a good chance a stock gingerbread rom will appear before that happens. Hopefully it will address some of these problems. Fingers crossed

Gingerbread works fine
The issue with wifi is pretty known from what I looked (strange thing it never happened on the stock samsung rom only started to happen on deodexed stock with speedmod kernel).
The other thing my original rom was XXJPY and I flashed a deodexed XXJPY so maybe the rom it self is not that good. Gonna try XXJVH/XXJVB deodexed with Demian kernel probably, or will try Darky ROM (also considering CM7).

in my opinion cm7 has gotten to the point that there is no reason not to install it... its litterally just a single zip now after you have rooted and put cwm on you're phone. the battery is fine, the photo/video is fine (although the samsung camera is way better... panoramic pics ftw) wifi/data is fine/ no need for lagfix/ and its constantly being updated..
edit: actually I think the battery might be better than what I was getting on darky 9.5...
i have been frustrated about my sgs for the first month until i discovered the rom world
usally the stock rom comes bloated with **** and uneeded stuff wich makes the phone slower and many other useless things...(i think)
i am still kind of new to all this and there is so much info do some reading and see how your sgs can be a beast
I too am not feeling the awesomeness of the Galaxy S. My friend got his one when it came out and its hard to believe this is the same phone I thought of as awesome all that time.
I got it new last week, and experiencing quirky behavior that really makes me feel like I'm using a low-mid class phone, and made me completely unenthusiastic/ not inclined with moving to the new phone which is how it should be. I even used my old Motorlla V8 for days after I got the SGS cos I was so unimpressed.
Poor camera, reception, crashes, dropouts, low wi fi signal, stutters, not responding to taps etc, really clunky loose volume button that makes it feel cheap, cheap sounding speaker. And I haven't installed anything on it except quadrant standard, and that crashes sometimes too.
To elborate a little. As far as comparable qualities go, compared to my Motorolla V8, The reception and voice quality is poor. Same network same simcard, I get half the signal, during a call it will sometimes dropout or make that guitar like noise, whereas my V8 never did any of that.
Even when I am next to a wi fi router. It doesn't show full wi-fi signal. Not even at my friends house. It reaches nowhere near as much as any laptop I have had.
I gotta compare these attributes to my friends sgs.
What I have compared so far is the camera, which is much worse on mine, You can see the thread here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081453
The AMOLED screen is also a lot dimmer, and cant display white as pure white but a grey/blue tint. Same settings max brightness.
For example quadrant standard, the spinning DNA like helix test. His background is pure snow white, mine is an off blue/grey dim white.
We also compared speakers, same song. His one has stronger clearer sounds, its quite noticable. All in all I'm wondering If I should replace my phone within the 14 day period.
I already took it back one about the camera issue to where I got it and the guy said its fine, so I would really have to go to Vodaphone or samsung directly to get a new one, which I did, and they said go to a repair centre. Even if they even have stock, it could be the same problems. And I would have to prove all these grey area problems.
Anyway check out my other thread as well and apply the Spectrum or Waveform Wallpaper. I wonder if its glitching here, but I think its most likely normal.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086257
I will try upload a vid soon.
I am using my sgs now for 2 month, and i have to say its a great phone.
But its only great if you flash it.
In my opinion stock roms by Samsung are not fast enough,
full with useless apps and many tweaks like voodoo sound and gps fixes are missing.
(Tested 2 SGS from different providers, both roms not usable)
Try Darkys rom as also mentioned on page one.
There are many roms, and not all of them are bugfree and stable.
You have to remember the programmers arent payed for their work.
If you still have wifi problems uing darkys rom, your phone is damaged.
You probably need to start afresh.
Reflash a stock rom (ie. JPU which is a fill rom), then update to stock gingerbread. There shouldn't be many bugs at all.

I finally plucked up the courage to do exactly that.
I'm now running JVH with a CF rooted kernel and the phone is now performing close to what I hoped for.
Secondary boot loaders have also been fixed and I'll admit I held my breath during that flash.
Thanks to everyone here for providing the info I needed and making great roms.

Ive had mine since day 1 and its been amazing. No latency issues, wifi/data works perfectly, stable, no fc's(force closes), and the display is perfect. It seems they've gotten fairly "cheap" with the manufacturing of the newer, more recent models being shipped.
Love this phone... BUT, im still going to trade it in for an SGS2
I am seriously thinking about instalying cm7 nightly on my phone. But before i do i have some and i was thinking maybe you can help me out.
1)I was readying that everything works exept for the radio. Is that true? and how does the gps work as good as in gingerbread?
2)How is the battery life compared to the stock gingerbread rom?
3)Is it stable enough for every day use?(i don't mind if i have to "adjust" something here and there i just don't want to miss my cals amd sms).
Thnx in advance.

Thnx in advance.

hi.
1) everything except radio is working. Radio is even semi working on the latest builds.
GPS is sometimes stable and sometimes not. Can't day it was better when I was on stock ROM.
2) there are some battery issues, but I can make it last a day with moderate use
3) wouldn't say so. It is still in nightly build and no stable release is available yet.
I'm using it as my daily driver, but I don't mind some bugs here and there since the ROM is blazing fast.
My 2 cents on the matter

I had it installed for about a week. Didn't try the radio but everything else seemed to work.
Was a bit unstable at times but I could live with it. I couldn't live with the battery life though so reflashed samsung firmware.

To answer all three questions ...
1) FM radio works in the most recent builds. As GPS is about the same as on stock roms. The hardware is the hardware after all.
2) battery life is just? Like on the stock rom ...it depends on a lot of factors. If you are one of those people who claims to get three days on a charge, then you will disappointed. Most users get between a day and a day and a half of normal use per charge with much greater performance than on stock roms.
3) I feel it is ready for daily use if you are the sort who enjoys regular updates and tinkering . However ymmv so the only way to know how you will like it is to flash it and see.

what he said ^^
battery life was fine for me and i last used CM about 2 months ago !!! so it must be even better now
its the same as MIUI except from the layout, and i been on MIUI since CM7 - 2 months. and it is definitely stable enough for day to day use.
everything works for me and fm radio does too !! but if it acts up, i just switch data on and listen to radio online, so thats no issue for me.
I would HIGHLY recommend you try it, the speed is well worth the little bugs. it will blow you away compared to stock / samsung based ROMs.
and if you like CM7 soooo much, take 10 mins to switch to MIUI and you will be even more amazed
and if you dont like it, just go back to stock. at least you can say you have tried it
Big thankyou for everybody that answer my questions.

True.
I will try it first thing in the morning. since i have to recharge my phone.
rschenck @ i am going to fallow your tutorial, but i noticed you sad that you need a froyo bootloader, why is that?
And 1 more thing: If i want to update cm7 do i allways need to reinstal all the apps or i can update the phone without wipeing all the data?
you can update without losing your apps, thats not a problem
and as for the froyo bootloader, you need this for sd card reasons mainly, amongst other things.
sometimes people cannot use internal nor external sd card, because of not having a froyo bootloader, thus resulting in most apps not working, camera not working and so on.
I was just like you... and i have decided to flash CM7 two days ago:
Really surprise, it's fast and stable.
No problem with call/sms.
Gps and battery life is ok like samsung rom.
Heavy 3D games like Dungeon Defenders work well.
But no TV-out, it's my only problem with this rom...
well i don't use the tv-out feature so i think it is ok.
