What kind of computer are you running? - Off-topic

I'm not sure if there is one of these but i will start one i suppose
OS: Windows 7 Enterprise N 64-Bit
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955, 3.2GHz Quad Core
RAM: 4GB Corsair DDR3
Video Card: PNY GT430 1GB
Hard drive: 500GB Western Digital Caviar Blue

Redundant thread
There is one or 2 already with same topic

Ah well, I just upgraded so I might as well:
ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO mobo <-bad buy, shoulda gone for a 790 chipset at least for Xfire
AMD Phenom x2 945 @ 3.0MHz processor <-another bad buy, shoulda forked out a little more for a BE processor
2x2GB Corsair CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 <- yet another bad buy, it is only half-price 9 months down the road
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6950 moded 6970 <- deal of the century. Just flashing the BIOS saves you like 20% of the cost
1TB WD Caviar 7200RPM HDD <- for all the furry pr0n
Cooler Master GX 750W <- slight future-proofing here. Should support xfire in the future
Windows 7 64-bit <- what were you expecting with the 4GB RAM?
A better way of getting info will be to use CPUz to get all that

13" MacBook Pro (mid 2009 refresh)
2.26GHz Core2Duo
2GB DDR3 @1066
250GB WD Caviar Blue 5,400 RPM
Nvidia 9400m
Snow Leopard 10.5.6, Ubuntu + Win7 in VM Ware
Nothing too fancy, but it gets the job done, I don't game or anything like that. Unlike most C2Ds in windows laptop the CPU supports hw virtualisation so VMs run nice and smooth.

17" Toshiba P300 16T
Win7 Ultimate
2GB RAM
1.8Ghz Intel Pentium
256mb Intel Family Chip Set Graphics.. I know, its bad, bud I didn't know anything about computers then
200Gb HDd with 1TB external Western Digital Elements, and 320Gb Western Digital Passport in black.
Wow I regret buying this.. haha

650 watt psi
About 6 extra fans put into the humungous 1.2 metre tall case.
I made this with a friend in I.T. class at school, im basically trying to see how far i can push it before it dies (it was free afterall) i just use it to play medieval 2 total war and that's about it

It's a decent laptop. Just old.
Came with XP and then went onto Vista. Regretted that but Acer killed the XP code. Then I got 7.
It runs damn fine. Hell, I remember it ran the Sims 2 at top settings, even though the game said it wouldn't run full stop. And it made me proud.
Not used Windows in ages though. Only use it for messing with my XBOX.
Mac OSX FTW!

If you clean the system up, it can run OK. Hide from viruses, get rid of bloatware, not much warez, it can run well.
All my warez are on my virus-free Hackint0sh.

[Q] PC upgrade planned... any suggestion?

Hey everyone,
I got my first laptop about 6 months back and in comparison to it my desktop just feels slow! My Desire HD even feels quicker! I have about £300 pounds to spend on an upgrade but I am not sure how to have the biggest effect on my system. At the moment I have...
Intel Core2 Duo 6600
Asus P5W-DH Deluxe
GeForce 9800 GTX+
2x 1GB OCZ PC-2 6400 Platinum
Western Digital Raptor 74GB (OS)
2x Samsung F1, 1Tb in Raid 1 (Main)
Enermax Liberty 500W
I use this machine for the normal office and web activities, as an FTP server to serve my media to laptop and phone, and occasional video encoding. I have two ideas about what to upgrade...
1) Swap my raptor for a SSD and chuck in a new Core 2, Quad Core CPU
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...14&subcat=1427
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...d=6&subcat=567
2) Make the move to i5 (Mobo, CPU and Memory) and sacrifice getting a SSD
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...id=339&subcat=
I guess it all comes down to how good the SSD is? Anyways, I just wanted your opinions?
Thanks
Ed
32gb corsair/ocz ssd and 2-4gb extra ram , maybe a q6600 (they go for dirt cheap and oc nicely)
this should be about 200-220 pounds , any money spent higher than that this on an upgrade is unreasonable
also with ssd , as long as its a brand the newer the better , make sure ur not gettin some 1-2 yr old leftover from stock
My primary drive with my OS on is currently 74 GB. This is the perfect size for me as it's always got 60 - 70 GB of data on. If I get a SSD I would probably want it to be a similar size. 32 GB just seems too small. Maybe something like this...
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-059-OC&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=910
Also with the new Intel G3 and new Sandforce controllers coming out I figured current generation SSD's will drop a bit in price. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
It's interesting you suggested memory. For some stupid reason it didn't come to mind that I am just scraping Windows 7's minimum requirements. I guess its things like that which make me always ask on forums first! A fresh 4 GB ram would probably help a lot more than an upgraded CPU. I was looking at something like this...

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-096-GL&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=813
Geil has better timings but I have heard good things about Kingston HyperX...
This CPU and memory comes in at under £200 well below my budget and will probs make the world of difference! All the feedback I can get is appreciated!

you dont need a sound card nowdays for the typical user ... and he isnt a gamer so i guess he doesnt need a better gfx , gtx+ is fairly decent , around a 4870 or 4890 , should be able to play crysis 2 on hardcore setting
also there decent enuff 775 cpu's to make the jump to am3 or intel i series unreasoned
and coming from a 3.5gb ddr1 400 config to a 2gb , later 6gb ddr3 1600 config i can tell the speed of the ram is hardly noticable , the trouble starts when it runs out

Very true! Also with the price of that recommended mobo, CPU and RAM in the UK I could get for a similar amount the core i5 option I found which is probably better...
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...id=339&subcat=
Instead I like the sound of the cheaper option (SSD and RAM). That would probably fit my demands, and if not I can make another upgrade and carry across the SSD.
Has anyone got a convincing argument to not go for a SSD and 4Gb RAM?
keep the 2gb , and ull have 6 .
Can I do that? Would you put the new memory sticks in A1 and B1, and the old sticks in A2 and B2. That way the total in channel A would equal the total in channel B?

ive done the same from amd single core 1800mhz to quad core 3400mhz and on my day to day tasks(other than games) i find myself waiting for my slow hdd as i did with the old comp ... ssd would be the first thing i get ... but im always busy changing phones
Haven't really tried SSDs yet... I have way too much stuff to use an SDD effectively. I'd suggest that you go for upgrades that'll stay for a while, like going for a REALLY good processor, mobo and RAM combo and then start thinking about upgrading the other stuff.

I have 2TB of media but my plan is to put OS on SSD and media on other drives. That setup should use SSD effectively. I agree completely with the rest of your post. I would love a nice new 'REALLY' good SandyBridge CPU, Mobo and RAM but that will blow my budget apart. By getting a good SSD it will stay for a while and be transferable from any system to any system too.
If I am unhappy with SSD choice I can always save again and make the move to SandyBridge at a later date.
I want so steer the whole conversation in a new direction now...
What SSD would people recommend?
Im struggling with my SSD choice. I know good solid options are the Intel X-25M and the OCZ Revodrive. I can get both of these in 80Gb options for about £170.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-057-OC&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=910
I know that for the same price I can get the new Intel SSD's in a 120GB variant but reviews suggest that the Intel X-25M and the OCZ Revodrive both beat the new Intel. As my aim is performance and as i dont need that extra space on my primary drive i have ruled it out.
The question is should I future proof my buy by stretching my budget to an OCZ Vertex 3.

You have a GeForce NVidia GPU which explains why Minecraft runs slowly.
Doesn't matter how little or big your CPU runs. As long as you have a great GPU like a GeForce then you can run any game on a crappy PC.
I have an AMD GPU which is a bit worse than that. It came with my Windows 7 PC that I bought last year.
Just remember: You have a good GPU.
That's it.
Like the iPhone 2G and G1 have almost same CPUs but the iPhone has a beast GPU and G1 has a standard one. Which is why the G1 is choppy and laggy and it can't play some simple 3D games. As for the iPhone 2g can do that. Plus hardware acceleration.

[Q] Which laptop should I get?

I'm starting college next month (I'm 18) and I'm trying to decide which laptop to purchase.
I had a thought about the Asus Transformer tablet/dock combo as I wanted to remain in the android modding field, but then I kinda realised that it's not going to be powerful enough, so my mind switched to a solid laptop/notebook instead.
I think I need a 14-15 inch led screen with core 2nd gen i5 (i7 is too expensive for me.) and as lightweight as possible. I'm going to be doing Bachelor in Electronic and Communication Engineering so the graphics should be good enough for some engineering drawings and picture editing, and for some nice gaming if possible. I don't have any knowledge about graphic cards, cache memory and RAM stuff btw. I'm thinking something not above $1000.
Which good models do you guys recommend me?
PS: I don't want Mac stuff, I need Windows 7 to work.
EDIT on 2nd of September:
Sorry to revive this old thread, but fact is, I still haven't purchased my laptop.
I'm looking for something (at max $1000) with core i5 and some other good specs as well as those 2 things:
1. HD webcam
2. backlit keyboard.
Those are very important. Thank you
I am a very happy owner of the Dell XPS 17 which I found really powerful, more than enough for gaming as well, and right now is probably one of the best choice on the market (from what the reviews said as well).
Anyway, you can start to customize the 15" inch version, the XPS 15 ,from 899$ with and I5 second generation (Sandybridge) and an Nvidia GeForce GT 550M 1GB RAM with Optimus Technology (saves battery).
it offers USB 3.0 as well, with the latest HDMI 1.4, card reader,1600x900p resolution screen, excellent Audio with Sub, and comes with a HD webcam integrated for HD video calls.
Enought for gaming (medium settings) and decent professional rendering.
http://www.dell.com/us/p/xps-l702x/pd?oc=dndokq1&model_id=xps-l702x
Hope it helped.
Really nice reply, I'm having a look at the XPS 15 right now, thank you very much. I tried running some search, came across the Lenovo IdeaPad 14" and the HP ENVY 14. What do you think about those?
I heard from user opinions that Dell are pretty good, and HP's build quality is kinda bad. I'm searching for some more models.
I had a look at the Alienware 14", kinda expensive for a laptop with no multitouch input :/
HP in general, is famous to have issues cooling problems, but not obviously on every model, Dell is definitely not a "saint" but they do the job, and from what I have read and my experience, they do it well.
The Alienware 14" is a good choice and it does have the same GPU on my XPS 17, which is the Nvidia 555M 3GB (pretty powerful card).
I wouldn't recommend thus a 14".
If you are planning to use it for casual gaming, but specially for professional rendering the resolution of the screen, is generally 1200x800, which is too low (HP Envy 14"; Lenovo IdeaPad), and it does bother you, if you have ever seen a 1080p or at least a 900p.
The alienware does have a 900p resolution, but you have to pay more.
With the alienware 14", anyway you will end up to have a smaller screen , which for a less amount of money you could get for a 15" inch with a very decent specs.
I also read in other forums people not really recommend a 14" inches, or at least they wouldn't buy it again. But this is just an individual opinion, depends entirely on you.
Personally, stick with the 15" and at least a 900p resolution, which you can find already in the basic configuration for a 899$, in the XPS 15, and if you want to reach a 1000$ customize it to have more power, except RAM, which you can upgrade by yourself for a cheaper price.
I have a 14" HP laptop and I love the size and portability... but the battery life is abominable. It gets maybe 90 minutes to a charge. I wouldn't recommend one for college use where you're going to be mobile for hours at a time.
My work laptop is a 14" Dell and I learned last week I can get 6 hours out of my battery (forgot to plug it in).
One thing to keep in mind with 15" or larger laptops is alot of them include a numpad with the keyboard these days. That means the QWERTY part of the keyboard is off-center to the left. I find this awkward to type on. I would recommend trying out this type of keyboard before committing to it.

Not sure if this will work for you but I just bought an Asus with an i5 on sale at best buy for 479. Integrated graphics but still it was a hell of a deal and I grabbed one. I'm very pleased with it. Ill look for a link.

Gaming desktop setup???

It's tax time, I'm a tech geek who has spent most of the last few years playing ps3 and hacking android, now I'd like to get into pc gaming. My gf plays wow on a budget laptop(Intel p6100 lol) so she d like to upgrade too. I'm looking for a desktop and she's looking for a laptop. Our budgets are 1500 each. She's pretty much sold on the m17x, probably because it's pretty lol. I'm looking for something a little more powerful I think? I'd like to play new games at as close to max settings as possible. Like bf3, skyrim, star wars, etc... I've been looking into ibuypower, but I've read mixed reviews... Here's what I've put together for a deaktop
NZXT Alpha Gaming Case Black Intel Core i7 2600k processor Liquid CPU Cooling System [SOCKET-1155] 8 GB [4 GB X2] DDR3-1600 Memory Module AMD Radeon HD 6970 - 2GB ASUS P8Z68-V LX -- Lucid Virtu Technology 1000 Watt - Extreme Gaming Series 1 TB HARD DRIVE -- 32M Cache, 7200 RPM, 6.0Gb/s 24X Dual Format/Double Layer DVD±R/±RW + CD-R/RW Drive Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium + Office Starter 2010 (Includes basic versions of Word and Excel) 64-Bit Tuniq TX-2 High Performance Thermal Compound The best interface between your CPU and the heatsinks [+$10]
Professional wiring for all cables inside the system tower Achieve exceptional airflow in your chassis [+$19]
Basic Pro Wiring
I'm totally new to this pc gaming thing, so if I totally screwed something up lemme know lol. I plan on playing on my 32 inch lcd at 1080p any advice on my setup or the wife's alienware would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Good enough
And the vga? Radeon?

Nice box. But I recommend you to install W7 Pro instead Home version because Pro has a lot of good addition, such as Remote Desktop (you can access your box from anywhere on port 3389 without additional stuff) and many other things. Check this link to comparing versions.
And IIRC Pro do not more expensive than Home Premium too much. But the upgrade license is bad.

"AMD Radeon HD 6970" - From the OP.
Make it Nvidia

At a glance, i would change a few things. 2500k will be sufficient and better value. Seasonic 620w would be a more suitable PSU. Samsung F3 1TB a better choice of HDD.
As you're using a TV to hook up to, make sure the Graphics card and TV have HDMI to connect with.
I'd steer clear of pre-built and simply build your own.
Your girlfriend allows you to play games all the time?what about sex??

Theres no need for the water cooler go with a good air cooler like the mugen 2 rev B.
A i5 2500k should do the job.
You should defenitly buy a (small) ssd with sata3.
You may want to change your graphics card to a hd7950 (if your budger allows, if not stick with the 6970).
If you want to buy a 7950, make sure youre motherbord supports pci-e 3.
Youre powersupply is extreme overkill, 600/650W would be enough.
I have about the same system:
I2500k @ 4GHz
8gb ram
60gb force gt ssd
Hd6970
Its more then enough to play battlefield at high/ultra quality.
And because of the ssd it boots super fast.

That setup sounds like about what I'm looking for. Did you build yourself. Or purchase prebuilt. Also, if I were to build myself, honestly, how difficult is it???

The company i bought it from assembled it for me.
I didnt want to mess around with a 1000+ euro computer as i havent ever assembled one.
You may want to look for a company that lets you choose the hardware, but they assemble it.
It cost me 55 euros but i think it was worth it.

awesome that build looks great and you are going to enjoy dues ex 3

What CPU's Can I Run? ETC...

Alright guys here's my PC Setup
HP 6214y:
MOBO: Pegatron m2n78-la (Violet) http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c01635734
CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 620(2.6GHz) NO OC
GPU: XFX Radeon HD 6770 Single Slot ~ 850/1200 NO OC
PSU: 650W Antec Earthwatts
RAM: 8GB DDR2
HDD: 1TB WD & LaCie 2TB External HDD
Monitor: 20" HP 2009f
Now i know the motherboard lists as AM2 yet my HP is running the Athlon II x4 620 which that says is AM3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103706
So i was wondering if there is any Newer CPU i could run on this MOBO and if it would bottleneck my GPU?
So i had in mine the http://www.frys.com/product/7018861?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG which is 125w compared to my 95w Athlon II.
Any suggestions *i do not want to run Intel at all* So please no wars just need help, only your honest opinions on what i can do PLEASE & THANKS!
Newest amd socket is FM1, so I'm afraid you're limited to am3.

well under tech specs it says that the AMD FX 4170 under the link i provided says socket type is AM3+ so i still can run it?
If not what could you recommend because thats cheaper than the Phenom series and their higher clocked as well i mean factory clock speed is 4.2GHz Quad Core
So if my MOBO says it supports AM2+ that means it can run AM3 just not AM3+?

Possibly, it really depends on your bios if it can run am3 or not.

You can try asking here so that you don't keep bumping this thread.
I'm closing this because of the link I just provided. That's the thread for computer Q&A.
