Ah well, I just upgraded so I might as well:
ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO mobo <-bad buy, shoulda gone for a 790 chipset at least for Xfire
AMD Phenom x2 945 @ 3.0MHz processor <-another bad buy, shoulda forked out a little more for a BE processor
2x2GB Corsair CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 <- yet another bad buy, it is only half-price 9 months down the road
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6950 moded 6970 <- deal of the century. Just flashing the BIOS saves you like 20% of the cost

It's a decent laptop. Just old.
Came with XP and then went onto Vista. Regretted that but Acer killed the XP code. Then I got 7.
It runs damn fine. Hell, I remember it ran the Sims 2 at top settings, even though the game said it wouldn't run full stop. And it made me proud.
Not used Windows in ages though. Only use it for messing with my XBOX.

If you clean the system up, it can run OK. Hide from viruses, get rid of bloatware, not much warez, it can run well.
All my warez are on my virus-free Hackint0sh.

I use this machine for the normal office and web activities, as an FTP server to serve my media to laptop and phone, and occasional video encoding. I have two ideas about what to upgrade...
1) Swap my raptor for a SSD and chuck in a new Core 2, Quad Core CPU

32gb corsair/ocz ssd and 2-4gb extra ram , maybe a q6600 (they go for dirt cheap and oc nicely)
this should be about 200-220 pounds , any money spent higher than that this on an upgrade is unreasonable
also with ssd , as long as its a brand the newer the better , make sure ur not gettin some 1-2 yr old leftover from stock

My primary drive with my OS on is currently 74 GB. This is the perfect size for me as it's always got 60 - 70 GB of data on. If I get a SSD I would probably want it to be a similar size. 32 GB just seems too small. Maybe something like this...

Also with the new Intel G3 and new Sandforce controllers coming out I figured current generation SSD's will drop a bit in price. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
It's interesting you suggested memory. For some stupid reason it didn't come to mind that I am just scraping Windows 7's minimum requirements. I guess its things like that which make me always ask on forums first! A fresh 4 GB ram would probably help a lot more than an upgraded CPU. I was looking at something like this...

Geil has better timings but I have heard good things about Kingston HyperX...

you dont need a sound card nowdays for the typical user ... and he isnt a gamer so i guess he doesnt need a better gfx , gtx+ is fairly decent , around a 4870 or 4890 , should be able to play crysis 2 on hardcore setting
also there decent enuff 775 cpu's to make the jump to am3 or intel i series unreasoned
and coming from a 3.5gb ddr1 400 config to a 2gb , later 6gb ddr3 1600 config i can tell the speed of the ram is hardly noticable , the trouble starts when it runs out

Very true! Also with the price of that recommended mobo, CPU and RAM in the UK I could get for a similar amount the core i5 option I found which is probably better...

Instead I like the sound of the cheaper option (SSD and RAM). That would probably fit my demands, and if not I can make another upgrade and carry across the SSD.

new rams go in orange old in black and you should be gettin dual channel ... ull need a 64bit os tho

any of the new sandybridge cpu's are nice. I upgraded from an e6600 at the beginning of the year (new mobo and mem, kept hdd and everything else) and the upgrade was night/day.

ive done the same from amd single core 1800mhz to quad core 3400mhz and on my day to day tasks(other than games) i find myself waiting for my slow hdd as i did with the old comp ... ssd would be the first thing i get ... but im always busy changing phones

Haven't really tried SSDs yet... I have way too much stuff to use an SDD effectively. I'd suggest that you go for upgrades that'll stay for a while, like going for a REALLY good processor, mobo and RAM combo and then start thinking about upgrading the other stuff.

I was worried the same thing would happen to me. Everyone I have spoken to who made the jump to a SSD has been amazed.

I have 2TB of media but my plan is to put OS on SSD and media on other drives. That setup should use SSD effectively. I agree completely with the rest of your post. I would love a nice new 'REALLY' good SandyBridge CPU, Mobo and RAM but that will blow my budget apart. By getting a good SSD it will stay for a while and be transferable from any system to any system too.
If I am unhappy with SSD choice I can always save again and make the move to SandyBridge at a later date.
I want so steer the whole conversation in a new direction now...
What SSD would people recommend?

Im struggling with my SSD choice. I know good solid options are the Intel X-25M and the OCZ Revodrive. I can get both of these in 80Gb options for about £170.

I know that for the same price I can get the new Intel SSD's in a 120GB variant but reviews suggest that the Intel X-25M and the OCZ Revodrive both beat the new Intel. As my aim is performance and as i dont need that extra space on my primary drive i have ruled it out.
The question is should I future proof my buy by stretching my budget to an OCZ Vertex 3.

They weren't even up on the site when I looked! I thought they were going to be way more money than that but at that price i'm sold. Also made my mind up on RAM...

[Q] Which laptop should I get?

I'm starting college next month (I'm 18) and I'm trying to decide which laptop to purchase.
I had a thought about the Asus Transformer tablet/dock combo as I wanted to remain in the android modding field, but then I kinda realised that it's not going to be powerful enough, so my mind switched to a solid laptop/notebook instead.
I think I need a 14-15 inch led screen with core 2nd gen i5 (i7 is too expensive for me.) and as lightweight as possible. I'm going to be doing Bachelor in Electronic and Communication Engineering so the graphics should be good enough for some engineering drawings and picture editing, and for some nice gaming if possible. I don't have any knowledge about graphic cards, cache memory and RAM stuff btw. I'm thinking something not above $1000.
Which good models do you guys recommend me?
PS: I don't want Mac stuff, I need Windows 7 to work.

I am a very happy owner of the Dell XPS 17 which I found really powerful, more than enough for gaming as well, and right now is probably one of the best choice on the market (from what the reviews said as well).
Anyway, you can start to customize the 15" inch version, the XPS 15 ,from 899$ with and I5 second generation (Sandybridge) and an Nvidia GeForce GT 550M 1GB RAM with Optimus Technology (saves battery).
it offers USB 3.0 as well, with the latest HDMI 1.4, card reader,1600x900p resolution screen, excellent Audio with Sub, and comes with a HD webcam integrated for HD video calls.
Enought for gaming (medium settings) and decent professional rendering.

I heard from user opinions that Dell are pretty good, and HP's build quality is kinda bad. I'm searching for some more models.
I had a look at the Alienware 14", kinda expensive for a laptop with no multitouch input :/

HP in general, is famous to have issues cooling problems, but not obviously on every model, Dell is definitely not a "saint" but they do the job, and from what I have read and my experience, they do it well.
The Alienware 14" is a good choice and it does have the same GPU on my XPS 17, which is the Nvidia 555M 3GB (pretty powerful card).
I wouldn't recommend thus a 14".
If you are planning to use it for casual gaming, but specially for professional rendering the resolution of the screen, is generally 1200x800, which is too low (HP Envy 14"; Lenovo IdeaPad), and it does bother you, if you have ever seen a 1080p or at least a 900p.
The alienware does have a 900p resolution, but you have to pay more.
With the alienware 14", anyway you will end up to have a smaller screen , which for a less amount of money you could get for a 15" inch with a very decent specs.
I also read in other forums people not really recommend a 14" inches, or at least they wouldn't buy it again. But this is just an individual opinion, depends entirely on you.
Personally, stick with the 15" and at least a 900p resolution, which you can find already in the basic configuration for a 899$, in the XPS 15, and if you want to reach a 1000$ customize it to have more power, except RAM, which you can upgrade by yourself for a cheaper price.

I have a 14" HP laptop and I love the size and portability... but the battery life is abominable. It gets maybe 90 minutes to a charge. I wouldn't recommend one for college use where you're going to be mobile for hours at a time.
My work laptop is a 14" Dell and I learned last week I can get 6 hours out of my battery (forgot to plug it in).
One thing to keep in mind with 15" or larger laptops is alot of them include a numpad with the keyboard these days. That means the QWERTY part of the keyboard is off-center to the left. I find this awkward to type on. I would recommend trying out this type of keyboard before committing to it.

I know of two people with 15.4" laptops that have a numpad. One is an Acer and the other is an HP.

My gateway 15.6" has full num pad. Nv35a is the model number. Beast of a computer. Triple core amd ati radeon 4250 hd 500 gb hdd, 4gb ram stock. Paid 439 from tiger direct

Checked out the Dell XPS 15z, looks pretty awesome. My favourite choice till now. The numberpad isnt a problem for me. Anyone else with nice advices? You guys are really helping me out.

Hey guys. I'm wondering if anyone has personal experience with the amd fx 4100 or that series? Or even the phenom ii vs a core i5? I have only seen benchmarks and opinions based on benchmarks. But as we all know benchmarks can be incredibly biased and flawed I need something reliable that can process stuff (for games) decently fast. Before we get into the other things that matter I will be getting decent ram either way and a mobo that works well with the processor. Please just hit me up with personal experience thanks guys

Spec wise including the l3 cache tells me it is awesome by the people keep saying it blows once again most of the crap people are talking is based on benchmarks... Are you looking for a drop in replacment for your current CPU or are you planning on a total upgrade; Mobo, CPU, the lot?
The obvious choice is the Intel 'Sandybridge' i5-2500K, or 2600K if you do a lot of Multi-threaded work like transcoding. You can expect to get between 4-4.5Ghz out of one of these without any problems.
If you can wait a while, the new 'Ivybridge' chips aren't too far away and the platform will bring native USB3 among other things.

Thanks looking to actually build a new pc. Mostly gaming and routine tasks. Currently running a Q6600 Intel processor with some stock mobo. Probably nothing good. I just need something that works well I honestly don't need anything too intense I may go with the fx 6100, i can get one for $100 near here.

Do not, i repeat, do NOT buy an AMD 'Bulldozer' FX. They are a total disaster generally, but even worse for gaming!
i5-2500K is hands down the best bang for buck that you will get right now.

I agree, while I am an AMD fan because of the pricing, you would definitely enjoy a 2500k. Pair it up with a nice mobo and a good gpu and you'll be set, 4 or 8Gb of RAM at 1600mhz will be great for anything you are doing. I highly suggest investing in a solid state drive, if you told us your budget I could spec something out for you. And NEVER skimp out on the power supply, you want a high quality psu always, corsair is well known for good psu's.

I appreciate the image once again I'm hoping for actual experience use not benchmarks because I've seen about a million benchmarks as to why I should get the i5 2500k despite it having a higher price tag.

Experience use? You'll have to go with the reviewers and their benchmarks on that one. As for user reviews, you won't be seeing many. Why? Because nobody in their right minds is buying into Bulldozer when a better performing SandyBridge can be had for less money!

Call me old fashioned if you want. But my AMD Phenom II x4 965 quad-core processor still kicks ass!
I'm not into benchmarking statistics because they don't measure everyday performance after everyday use. To me, the real concern should be "After months of use, will my PC perform just as fast as it did the 1st day it came out of the box?" I can say for my PC, it does perform just as fast as it did on day 1. That's because I did the research on all the components and planned my build very carefully. My PC is now 3 years old and I still get to enjoy the blazing speeds that it can deliver!

Sorry if I didn't clarify myself. Consistent performance is based on the components of the computer system as a whole. I just used the processor as an example since we were talking about CPUs.

Remember i asked about the possibility of a drop in upgrade? If your current board will support Bulldozer CPU's, (which it might as the Socket is backwards compatable), and if your current CPU is pretty weak compared to the FX, it makes for a sensible upgrade path to buy one.
The reason i add this is because the money saved doing that, rather than buying a whole new system, can be spent on an SSD for your Primary Drive. You talk about the performance of the system as a whole. Well, that's the most important upgrade you could make right now.
The IO sub-system has been the bottleneck in modern computers for years. Once we had multi-core processing, more memory bandwidth than you can shake a stick at and Graphics power to run pretty much anything, it all went to pot as soon as you had two applications trying to access your HDD at the same time. Playing a game when your virus scanner started up? The game becomes a chundering mess!
I'm on my second SSD now and it's the wisest money i ever invested in my PC. If you want an all round improvement, something that makes every second of PC use more pleasing, buy an SSD.
Of course, every time i have to use the work PC now, i end up wanting to kick the crap out of it for being so lacking in comparison.

Okay thanks yeah I go nuts when I have to use the work computer already. Well for $100 the fx 6100 can't be too bad and I'd get 20% off a motherboard. My main desire there is I really want mobo that supports ddr3 so I can upgrade my terrible ram too. And yeah i'd want an ssd probably sata iii was the dream. Any thoughts on this, I'd probably get a 64g one would this be decently sufficient, also has anyone checked out the Seagate monentus xt? I don't plan on getting it but yeah just curious.

Don't skimp on size. 64GB won't be sufficient. Buy reliability and size rather than speed. i.e an Intel 320 160GB (SATA 2) > Any 64GB SATA 3.

Hmm okay i think I found a 120gb one i'll probably go with decent reviews and such. And I would like sata iii just because it will have more future use, but is the sata ii pretty good compared to a normal hdd?

Why no usb 3.0?

Im surprised that no phones released this year have usb 3.0 , you can really feel a difference (if you have a computer that supports it of course) , xperia z also has usb 2.0

Phones now are way too expensive and OEMs are already trying their best leveling the features and have reasonable priced devices. Assembling all the latest techs on their flagship device would just end up having an very2x expensive device.
Would you pay for a phone which is more than $1000+ price for a pimped up specs?

Also the internal storage and sd cards on phone would not even come close to reaching the max transfer rates of usb 3.0 so it would be just as pointless.

your reasoning is incredibly ... point is that USB 2.0 transfer rates are too low for file sizes we are transferring now. WE NEED USB 3.0 more than we need 400ppi+ displays, 2gb of ram or quad core processors

So don't buy a phone with 2gb ram, quad core processor and 400ppi... and wait for one that features USB 3.0 if that's how you feel?
It's obvious that the MAJORITY of people are happy with USB 2.0 for the kind of stuff you put on a mobile phone... let's not forget, you load some music, maybe a movie? Your hardly using this to back up your life.

We also need holographic screens and the Star Trek computer. Whats your point? 1080p screens, RAM and processors are technologies that are available and affordable for mass production. NAND chips that could saturate USB 3.0 are not

Yep, I believe that the only reason or at least the main reason for why we don't have USB3.0 in phones and tablets yet is because current chipsets that get put in these devices simply don't support it.
But this will change very soon as Tegra 4 does support USB3 and so I am assuming that any future device that will come out powered by Tegra 3 will have USB3, and everyone else will try to catch up after that...

why do you think NAND bandwidth has to be equal to bandwidth of USB 3.0 for it to make sense? point is that USB 2.0 in real world get's us a around 30 MB/s mark while we could get let's say a 60MB/s with USB 3.0 and cut in half transfer time of large files. (from 5-6 min for 10GB using USB 2 to 2-3 min using USB 3). Isn't that enough to justify it?

point is that we are using same old tech that we used to "fill up" (or download from) a phone with 8 GB of memory and phone memory capacity has been bumped to 32GB+.

Like how fast do you even get with a class 10 microSDXC? 6-8mb maybe? Way far from the 30MB/s speed capacity. I'd say you need at least a class 40 microSDXC card for you to require a USB 3.0 thing is the bottleneck of current phone storage right now is not the connector technology but the storage speed itself.

USB 3.0 would be useful to attach an external SATA 3.0 SSD/ dock.

The majority of the people don't have USB 3.0 yet. So I doubt any OEM is in a hurry to add that feature just so that a handful of people could actually use it.
I'd say maybe 2 more generations before we see that on a phone. Just a guess

I know that. But my point is Ultra version has the capacity to reach upto 30mb/s whereas extreme pro has 90mb/s but as you can see the data transfer is only capped at 4mb/s to 5mb/s.
Please do some research first with UHS technology before contradicting comments please. I have solid proof yet yours only are based on screenshots.
BTW I could reach transfer speed of up to 28mb/s with the same card if I format it into exfat filesystem and connect it directly to a USB 2.0 port. Like I said the limit is not the connector technology but the filesystem itself and card technology itself.
If that's how you look at things then feel free to call all the phone owners in the world apple fanboys cause everyone having a high end phone is only using USB2.0 technology. Go post on android general section so alot more expert users could enlighten you.
And if you still insist go buy one yourself and connect it on your android phone then try to reach the limitation of USB 2.0 with your extreme pro card.
Anyways believe on what you think is correct. It's too futile to explain very advanced explanations on a average user. Just try it to believe it :good:
And ohh... Just so you could do a comparison. Here's the same benchmark of the Ultra version.
As you can see it's on 30mb+ and not 4mb-5mb like the one I posted.

i want usb3.0 too!!

It would appear from some reports (based on an OEM marketing release from Samsung) that the Exyenos 5 Dual SoC will support USB 3 ... however this only refers to the Exyenos 5 Dual ... NOT the Exyenos Octa.
As for the USB people themselves ... http://www.phonearena.com/news/USB-...ging-transfer-speeds-of-up-to-800Mbps_id25569 raises hopes and then throttles expectations in one small article.
I think I'm going to wait until everyone offers the same hardware configuration before I rush out looking for something I'm very unlikely ever to need or use. After all, they're all (Exyenos, Snapdragon, Tegra, etc) based on ARM Cores and Nvidia and Qualcomm are already there. Thee Tegra 4 and the Snapdragon 800 are both capable of USB 3 support so the next Generation HTC will certainly have the processing power to do it ... whether they choose to implement it will, as always, be a market driven decision.
