[Q] How do I lock my phone again? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I rooted and unlocked my captivate, but I now need to send it to samsung for repairs - my phone shuts down all the time, especially after a recharge.
I unrooted the phone using the update.zip, but I want to know how to lock it again. It should not keep on asking me the unlock code every time it boots up, which it is doing right now.
I need this fast, as the shipping label I got from samsung is only valid for some days, so I have to ship the phone off.
Thanks

you can odin one click back to stock, but I wouldnt bother, its just unlocked how can that void your warranty?

You won't be sending your sim with the phone. That popup won't show with no sim.

How to brick Galaxy S I9000M

Yes you read it right I want to know how I can brick my phone or make it stop working completely. Now let me explain the reason why. I had installed an app called "Launcher Pro". Later I uninstalled it and that is when all hell broke lose. Basically when ever I would swipe my screen to unlock the phone, I would get constant error messages that would reappear the moment I would close them, and to make matters worse it would lock out the rest of the screen so I can not click any thing else (just like in windows vista and windows 7 when a UAC message pops up). This is further complicated by the fact that I have a Bell Canada Samsung Galaxy Phone, which does not have the 3 button recovery ability but that is not the end of my problems. I got this phone at a store called Best Buy and got their warranty. Now one of the things that voids the warranty is unlocking the phone, guess what?? My phone is unlocked. So since my phone is not dead, it boots up, the lock screen loads up, the top bar shows u the battery life and the fact it is getting service and can receive calls (but which I can not answer since when it comes to that screen, the screen freezes up with the error messages). So if I take the phone to Best Buy, they are going to pop in a different sim other then bell and when they see that it works, will hand me back my phone and void my warranty. So I need to have the phone in such a condition that they can not check that and yes there can be no physical or water damage either. How do I accomplish this?
Is it rooted ? Did u happen to enable usb debugging ?
If so a mere "adb reboot recovery" followed by a wipe data would solve ur issues
Ya it is rooted, but usb debugging is not activated and I can not activate it the normal way through the settings screen, if you would know a way to do it some other way, that would be great. Just to let every one reading this know, I do not want to change my phone if I can help it, if there is a way for me to fix this with out bricking the phone and getting a new one, I will be more then happy to keep my current phone. Thanks

Have you tried booting into safe mode. Usually booting into safe mode will disable any 3rd party apps from loading. This might give you the chance to uninstall LauncherPro or even enable USB debugging. The method to get into safe mode for the Bell Vibrant seems tricky though:
Menu + Home + Power On right when you see the Samsung logo (specifically: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8583886&postcount=17) probably hold the keys. I know in the other Android phones (HTC Ion) you have to hold Menu from beginning til it boots.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=758678
Seems to work sometimes...
Why dont you just re-lock your phone?

Why unlocking it with code would void the warranty? if you flash, yes, maybe. but you enter the unlock code... isn't the official way? Don't bother how i got the code, I bought it, it's mine, i can unlock it. period. i dont understand how they would consider to void the warranty because you unlock with code. btw, Bell does give unlock code for 75$. so, my phone is not eligible for warranty?

Guys c'mon.. At least read his post. He can't gain access to the phone at all right now. How do you expect him to relock?
Honestly with no adb you can't do much if u dont have 3button working
Try all those 3button tricks posted for those who can't get to recovery/download mode.
One if i recall is :
Turn off phone
Press n hold Home + Vol Down (or Vol up, up 2 u) + power
Keep holding, your phone will restart once, then twice, then let go off power button.
Its worth a shot
I work at best buy. They will not stick another sim card into the phone. Is it within the 30 day return policy? If its within 30 days go return it and show them the phone dont work and they will exchange it for you.. If its not within the 30 days they will most likely have to send the phone out to Samsung.
What i would do :
1. Take the phone back to the store.
2. Tell them the thing dont work...they wont know if its unlocked or rooted.
3. Ask them to exchange it under the manufactures warranty (if its not within the 30 days) and hopefully they will exchange it and not have to send it out to samsung.
WIN.
PM me if anything.
Asked the rep at best buy (by the way this is best buy Canada), and he said warranty is void if unlocked.
like eduard said, just take it do them. don't even ask or mention unlocking coz that will make them think that you have unlocked it.
take it there, say it doesn't work. done. don't ask, don't tell.
lol thats why you dont tell him you unlocked it! wow man.
its not about you telling them that u unlocked it, their procedure is to insert a different sim into the phone before sending it out for repair and/or exchange. And that is when I will be caught. So aside from giving best buy the phone, does any one else have any other ideas?
Did you try this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=813580
I also have a Bell SGS. I got it from Wireless Wave and fortunately I have 3b recovery. You've tried both (up+home+power) as well as (down+home+power) right? You let go as soon as you see the boot screen that says i9000.

Water damage is not covered by warranty.
From what i read, i can't imagine this is a hardware problem (though i could be wrong), so probably the worst that can be is that your phone needs a reflash. How much would that cost in CA if you can't talk it into a warrantee case?
Ya its not a hardware issue, its a software one. Let me give u more information. The phone boots and goes to the lock screen. Shows the correct time and date and shows on the top that it was connected to my phone service but the moment I swipe the screen to unlock, I get repeating messages, one of them reads "The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. please try again." and the other reads "The application TwLauncher (process com.sec.android.app.twlauncher) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again". Both messages have a "force close" button on the bottom that takes the message away just for it to reappear a second later.
Also from what I have been reading in the forums, if I can only get my phone into usb debugging mode in any other way then the typical MENU > Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging, it would solve all my problems. If any one knows how to do that, please share your knowledge.
There is a post on here for making a USB dongle that powers the phone straight into download mode.
You need a USB plug and a resistor.
You can then re flash.

Here's what you can do:
When you've started the phone (and the error messages come up) you connect your device to your PC with the USB cable.
At that point you'll see a new menu on the background (behind the error messages) for the selection of your connection (Samsung Kies, Mass Storage, etc...)
Click away the error messages very quickly and press the button Samsung Kies (you may have to try several times before you can do this but it's possible)
Then you open Samsung Kies and you use the procedure that is mentioned in the post below to reflash your device with a test firmware:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=766589
Make sure to read through that tread to know what codes you have to use in the registry. You should be able to flash your device in Kies with a (test/official) firmware this way.
In the end you my not even have to return it at all...

[Q] i9000m asking for network unlock code this morning?

I bought a Bell Vibrant back in August and unlocked it to use on Rogers. Things have worked fine, I haven't rooted, or tried any custom roms, nothing unusual. But this morning I wake up to find the phone asking me for the network unlock key? I hadn't done anything unusual the night before. And the key I saved from the first unlocking did work fine, but I'm just wondering whats going on here?
Could the Daylight Savings change have triggered something maybe?
Thanks for any info.
I had the same thing a month ago. Just type the code again and it will be OK.....I guesss untill the next time.

I had the same thing happen after changing to a new battery. Phone was unlocked with the Samsung battery. I installed a 3rd party battery and on the reboot it asked for the unlock code.

Screen logo repeats on samsung galaxy i9000m

I may have bricked my phone while flashing with odin to stock froyo 2.2 rom. The download mode works but i cannot get into recovery mode it just flashes at the logo screen gt-i9000m over and over and over again.
Is there a way past this or do i have to send this phone in for repair?
I have stock everything.
My phone battery died and I have spare batteries and changed it to a fully charged one. It booted up and said that a bunch of apps have to be FORCE closed... so I rebooted it.
Now it's doing the same thing yours is... the logo screen flashes over and over.
I pulled the battery to hard boot it. Then without turning it on I plugged it in to charge... so it tries to go to the charging battery icon and then flashes the logo screen over and over again.
This is my second phone... first one kept eating battery life and got real real hot.
omg stoopid samsung. I can get into download mode just fine, when i reflash it just stuck at the boot logo. Are you able to send yours away for repairs? i have mine unlocked but i also got warranty from where i bought it at wireless wave. i rather not send it in though...
I couldn't get into any menu's... sent the piece of **** away for repairs. I almost threw it at the wall behind the clerk at the bell store.
same boat here, i woke up this morning to find a bunch of forced closed messages. so i hit okay, my phone was all screwy so i turned it off, pulled out the battery, put it back in and started the phone and ta-da the galaxy S TEXT (not logo) kept...well it looks like it would boot over and over again just to the title screen, shut off and boot again. If i do the 3 button press to get to download mode i see that screen and i cant do anything else, actually i dont know what to do there.
I bought this thing in august so i am good for warranty, oh i haven't once rooted or lagfixed or anything, i just unlocked it, and with rogers instead of bell, but yeah i called bell and they refuse to help. The guy was not cool with me unlocking the phone, says i might not be covered under warranty anymore.
Next week i am going to take it to the bell repair center in person, see what they say.
Not sure what to do now. EFF!
Last samsung phone ever. the LG optimus 2X looks pretty awesome.
I'm having the same issue, my phones all stock.
When I got my phone this morning is was turned off, I plugged it in, powered it up, saw the Samsung logo and intro play and I walked away. When I came back I tired using my phone but only the lights, on the buttons, turn on but the screen and the rest of the phone doesn't respond. The lights will stay on forever.
If you can get into download mode, have you tried flashing it with some other Rom? Like DocX custom rom?

Try booting into recovery mode (vol-up, home and power). Do you get an error message under the menu? If so, report it here or do a search on that specific error. It appears that some errors are easily recoverable from via flashing while others are not.

The flash will go through completely and pass, as soon as it reboots to the Gt-i9000m logo it will just loop continuously. even when you hold down vol-up, home and power, it just doesn't recongize those buttons but will recongize vol down, home, power what gives?
Valinorian - If you can get into download mode, have you tried flashing it with some other Rom? Like DocX custom rom?
Yeah tried darkys 5.6 rom, does the same thing shows gt-i9000m logo then loops it self
dtran00 - that sucks man, but bell offers unlock codes so i dont' see how that can void your warrenty when you have to pay $70 for the unlock codes no?
Spudsicles - hopefully i won't have any troubles but i might end up throwing it at them lol
Seriously this is a good phone but the problems omgosh.
regarding everyone with the boot loop errors, Sounds like you have got the corrupted internal memory. This is a common problem everyone has been having including me. You will have to send the phone off at bell. I'm still waiting for mine to come back to me, sent it off Dec 1, although some people are reporting repair times within 5 business days.
To the best of my knowledge, that does NOT necessarily indicate flawed internal memory. I've experienced a few errors myself - one was a real SDCard issue which required repair while the others I was able to recover from.
Have you tried reflashing firmwares via Odin with the repartition option checked?
Have you tried booting into recovery using ADB? I'm not an ADB pro myself but do know it's possible. You'll have to google for instructions.

Power/Hold/Lock button no longer works

This problem just started. I'm running Apex 9.1 and have been running it for about two weeks now with no problems. This morning, I kept having my power menu pop up without me even pressing it. Now my power/hold/lock button no longer even works. I have confirmed the phone is on because when I plug it in through USB, the screen comes on and everything is fine. I just cannot lock the phone or unlock it. I'm not sure if this is a software problem or hardware.
So, what are my options here? I have insurance through AT&T and considered just going in and seeing about getting a replacement. Is this possible even though I've rooted and flashed another ROM?
Or can I flash back to stock Froyo from Gingerbread without having access to the power menu (to boot into recovery)?
Any help would be appreciated.

You could use a jig to get to download mode and use odin to flash stock if you are trying to do warranty. If you are doing insurance it won't matter cause you have to pay the $125 deductible

I bought the phone on its release date, so my year warranty is over with. I have to pay the deductible regardless of my problem with the phone? I have other various problems as well that are related to hardware (ear piece crackling and some other minor problems). So you're saying this wouldn't be covered through a free replacement on insurance?

I've never heard of the insurance doing free replacements they always have you pay the deductible. The warranty is what would have done a free replacement

Is there any way to bring up the power menu without being able to use the power button? Is there any type of application or option in a menu somewhere?
Is possible change the lock button? i mean, lock/unlock with another other button?

If you can get access to your phone via USB, you could always try ADB to get into download mode. Once you're there, it's a quick one-click back to stock Eclair if you do have to go with warranty service.

i just got my second warranty replacement device TODAY(I am grandfathered into the original $10 per month Jump!/insurance program)
the first time was back in Oct, the G4 went into bootloop and would not fully power on. would at most show the LG boot logo and then repeat. I had an unlocked bootloader, a custom recovery, and a custom rom in place. there was no physical damage. phone worked fine until the bootloop.
result: tmobile warranty replacement. never heard anything regarding any software modification/rooting/bootloader unlocking.
the second time, phone started acting up and having random reboots and sometimes freezing. then it appeared to be stuck in a bootloop, but would sometimes attempt to load the boot animation, and once or twice actually loaded the custom rom I was running, but would then freeze within minutes of operation. Bootloader was unlocked, custom recovery, custom rom.
This time, because I was able to get it to boot long enough without tinkering with the device at all..... I was able to stay booted long enough to initiate a LGUP .kdz install which returned the device to stock. i was then able to adb reboot bootloader, and oem bootloader lock. so the phone had zero signs of ever being "tampered" with.
of course the thing turned on today while i was in store, loaded up as if it was a fresh install. I assured the customer serice rep that it was having issues, and that I would not be replacing the device under warranty if needn't be.
result: tmobile warranty replacement.
he laughed at me and smiled, as if i were a typical samdung, i mean typical Tmobile customer who didnt know anything abut my device.
