I have the HTC Hero CDMA running AOSP 2.2.1 and i have the DecaFuct kernel flashed. It is overclocked to 806mhz with setcup.
The problem i believe i have is the speed on my 3G network. I have checked the speed in various locations, some with good coverage and some with bad coverage and this is what im getting...
7:15pm down.24mps; up.30mps
7:25pm down.96mps; up.59mps
8:04pm down.34mps; up.31mps
8:28pm down.48mps; up.47mps
8:29pm down.51mps; up.47mps
im sure this is a problem because my roomate has the backflip and is getting speeds of down3-4mps; up1-2mps
is there a way to fix this?
First, where are you? Second, your friend's backflip is on ATT. I'm guessing you have a Sprint Hero. Those speeds don't look like 3G, they look more like 1X. I should know, I finally got 3G/EVDO last week and the difference is pretty amazing. I doubt it has anything to do with ROMs, be it AOSP, CM, Sense or whatever. Ditto on the overclock. That only affects the CPU speeds and has nothing to do with network speeds.
im in Irvine, i tried it inside my apartment, outside, and down the street it was all pretty slow. so is this normal?
Again what network is your roommates and the rom/kernal/CPU freq has nothing to do with network speed. What version is your radio(baseband), check in settings. It could be that sprint coverage isn't that great where u are.

And also I just tested my speeds cause I was curious n mine weren't all to far from yours. Depends on server location and how many bars you have. Don't look at the numbers if you are satisfied with how your hero works that's all that matters.

my roommate is on att.
my radio is 2.42.01.04.27
the coverage maps show i have 3g coverage all over and around where i live.
i just thought i should be getting around 2-3 at least, its not the numbers that bug me its just that it takes much too long to download apps and games
i installed the latest radio and im averaging about 1mps each time, its not what i expected but its sure better than .5 mps
Also try updating your prl and profile. It may help a little. What is your current prl?

It's from many months ago. It doesn't offer an improvement in performance, and since it's older, not really worth using anyway.
i am using 2.6.29.6 decafuct
what is the prl and profile?
My download speeds are around 300kbps, uploads are closer to 500kbps. This is supposedly on 3g. I'm running aosp2.3.3.
I read somewhere that I have to reset the data connection using ##3282#, but this isn't working. Do I need to go rollback to the stock build to do this? Should I try something else first?
Thanks!
Android Ver: 2.3.3
Baseband: 2.42.02.10.29
kernel: 2.6.29.6-aosp-CMod
Mod ver: aospCMod-HC-20110326

Make a nand of your current rom. Then flash a sense or stock/rom. Then updat your profile and prl. Then make a nand of that rom to use for more updates. Then restore your 1st nand and you should be good to go

There seems to be a problem with throughput with Sprint's network, at least that's what the tech told me. My 3G speeds are about averaging 70 kbps and have been for the past three weeks. A lot of people over on the Evo forums have been contacting Sprint about the problem. Check out the thread over there.

Thanks laie1472. I went back to the stock version and updated everything... it's running much better now (800K dl).
I guess it also depends on location. I'm on 60677 and my data is flying. At least it is at my house. For some reason I get slower speeds in different parts of town, particularly at work. Speeds there are in the <500Kb there whereas at home I topped 1900 yesterday in my garage.

It seems as though my service is worse at my house since I starting. using the cm6 rom. I drop calls like. crazy! Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking of. updating my radio to something. other than the newest one that I already have installed. What was the last one back? My phone will go from 3-2 bars to 0 and takes a little bit to go back up just to do it again. It could just be me but I could have sworn it was better before on a stock sense rom.

Whats your radio, prl and pri. Do you have bad reception or just low bars. You might just need the visual signal fix since it seems to be an issue with this rom... but it is only visual. Flash fresh 2.33 And look and compare the dbm out put to what cm6 dbm out put if there's a difference try updating your prl and pri before your radio... if still different dbm out compared too fresh then update your radio... most likely its just visual and most of the themes fixs that and there's a fixs on here just for the bars.

You can flash any radio you want. (cdma hero of course) ive used the newest sprint one, the verizon one, and ive even flashed the original 1.56 rom radio. As long as you stick with a NON-GSM radio, you should be fine.
I flashed the Verizon radio and while my phone still drops it seems as though not quite as often. I also now have 1 solid bar at all times as apposed to 2-3 then 0. I have the newest prl and pri as well as updated my profile. I can't wait for my new airave to come in as the first one they sent me stopped working. Ill just have to play around with my phone some more and see what happens.

H is basically like 3.5G. The speeds are all relative, and unless you are looking directly at the speeds, It's basically the same when your surfing the web. As for your connection, I haven't run cognition in a while so I don't know about that.

Pheonix wass my first rom. Very very stable rom, I liked it but couldn't get over the unreliable battery. I'm on Ultimate JPY v5.6 right now (speedmod, tweaks, lagfix) and I'm getting about 18 hours with heavy usage.
Ok so if I want the H signal I need to change roms correct, not modems right? Was thinking of flashing perception anyway and using speed mod and jk4 modem. That should get me H?
Also, (for some crazy reason) it's possible when making the ROM to turn off the H and have the 3G only.
Just FYI.

The HSDPA/HSUPA is not actually part of the ROM.
It's the Kernel/Modem that your using. It's only available on the i9000 based setups.
So if the ROM your using is i9000 based it will be enabled by default
Ya that's what I figured but when cog starts up it says i9000, but anyway I'll try perception see if it activates H.Thanks
I just flashed Perception 10.3 a few days ago and i get HSDPA.
3g/h depends on the modem, not the rom. most of the modems already have the h enabled.

Just like everyone is saying, HSUPA is enabled once you install an I9000 modem.
On stock captivate ROMS (like Cognition), an "H" symbol will not appear, but you still have an HSUPA enabled if an I9000 modem is installed. Only I9000 based ROMs will show an "H".
The best way to check if you have HSUPA enabled on a stock captivate ROM is getting an internet speed test app and checking your upload speed. At my fastest, I get about 500kbps upload speeds with only 3G enabled.
I have an I9000 modem installed, and HSUPA is enabled, as you can tell from my internet speed test results, but my phone still shows "3G" because I use a ROM based on Rogers stock Froyo release.
Wow, good to know. All this time I thought the "H" was sub 3G speeds..
You'll have to excuse me, I'd been using an unlocked G1 on AT&T's network for almost two years; never had 3G until now.
I have a quick question, and this may be completely based on the crappy service in my area as I usually get around 2-3 bars. I absolutely LOVE this ROM, but I'm not sure if the problem here is in the ROM or just my service. I have read that non I-9000 ROM modems are generally capped around ~300kb/s upload, however it's showing my phone using HSDPA, so I'm a bit disappointed with the results of my speedtests. My friends have showed me SS's where they have speeds of ~1.5 mbps (with the same signal strength). Is this due to them using different ROMs or modems? Or is it just the bad coverage in my area? I'm grandfathered in the old AT&T unlimited data plan, so I used the phone a lot as a mobile AP so any suggestions how to increase the speed if possible would be greatly appreciated. I realize it won't be as good as a broadband connection, but 300kb/s upload seems a bit ridiculous.
Since I don't have the appropriate number of posts to embed, I'm attaching the screenshot if someone would be so kind as to take a look.
Thank you

Flashing an i9000 rom should get you the higher upload speeds (Mosaic is pretty good). I went from 300 to 1000 upload.
Hey guys! Was wondering what it would take to port an O3D ROM? Has anyone tried just flashing an O3D ROM on their thrill yet? Or even fastboot flashing just the system.img so as to leave the kernel alone?
You can flash any of the roms just wont get the 4g speeds.

How do you lose 4G speeds (not sure what you mean by that either... are you saying you only lose access to the HSPA+ network, but keep you access to the HSPA network?)... anyways, how do you lose 4G speeds if these ROMs only update the system, and are not touching the kernel or radio rom? I could see some build prop differences, but wouldn't we just need to change the build prop to the Thrills?
So wait, everything works except the 4G Speeds?
They do change your kernal check out the thriller change log it says he made it so that we can flash back from o3d roms and get our stock kernal back

The P920 and the P925 have deferent Baseband radio versions, that's why the 4G doesn't work. If someone could take the radio out of the Thrill and make it in to a flashable zip that problem would be solved I'm sure we will see that once GB is released.

And what do you mean by you lose 4G? Do you keep 3G (HSPA) and just can't use 4G protocol (HSPA+)? Or do you lose HSPA all together?

All the Roms we have so far with the exception of a couple just modify the /system folder. The radio is seperate from that. What we need is a kernel. Otherwise all these roms are pretty much going to wind up the same but with different themes. That's the reason I don't want to put my Rom out til I can get a bootable kernel put together. Its pretty close to just being Thriller with an HTC sense theme at this point. The differences in the rom itself I don't think warrant a seperate release at this time.

That was my basic view point with any ROMs I made in the past... I wasn't doing anything unique or special, just making it the way I wanted in terms of apps, kernel, etc... so it was one package I flashed instead of 3 or 4.
Looking around, I don't see a lot of people working on the Thrill and was hoping I could get this figured out... I tried just taking the build.prop, ril's, kernel, and .ko's from the thrill and tossing them on a O3D build, but still didn't make a difference for the HSPA+... it makes me suspect there is something I am overlooking (which is very possible, never ported anything, even such a simple port, and I am unaware of any other standard system files that control radio functionality, rest is with the kernel and baseband itself, but both phones have the same baseband version best I can see, so likely kernel, but I am using the thrill kernel!). But at the same time, it is odd to me since I am used to other devices (HTC G2 for example) where a single ROM works on both the G2 and Desire Z...

The only difference in baseband is that the O3D doesn't support the 850 band. There may be a lib in the o3d roms that's not allowing us to use 4g that needs to be replaced from a Thrill rom. I haven't bothered snooping around yet though.

Yeah, thats what I was trying to drill down was which file was causing it, but I have replaced every file I am aware of in both the lib and bin to no avail, along with the kernel and its corresponding .ko files.
If I go the other way, though, no problem. I can take the framework and apps from an O3D ROM, drop them in a Thrill ROM, and good to go. So there is something hiding that controls which frequencies are used, question is what and where? If you have any idea what file would control that, I can search and test it for you.

Yes, everything works just fine, just no "4G" speeds, regular 3G only (which for me I get essentially the same speeds, except on full bars I am a little slower... talking 6Mbps peak instead of 8Mbps peak).

I am using Thriller, which is a Thrill ROM. I tried Thiaz's and Kings, both were nice... but I prefer the Thriller theme, and the special add on's that those O3D ROMs have we can do manually, like the superchargerv6 script and build.prop tweaks. Sure, we don't have any kernels (yet, they are coming) but modded kernels are not a huge deal without overclocking/undervolting... there are some other tweaks that can be made, help with battery life a little bit and performance a bit, but I am pulling 3000 quadrant scores with superchargerv6 and build.prop tweaks on Thriller, plenty good enough IMHO for speed, just want a little better battery life.
So I can flash a O3D kernel on top of a Thrill ROM, and keep my "4G"... looks like the issue is isolated to the system...
this may be a stupid question, but I've ran into this before. If you flash an o3d ROM and lose your 4G, can you flash back to a thrill ROM and get your 4G back? I've had previous phones that once you changed your radio, sometimes you couldn't get it back.

how do you I unroot and get gingerbread?
As my sig shows, I'm successfully flashed on the Rogers v20c and I just have to commend it. It is the first stock ROM that is speedy out the box. Idk what it is with this rom, but my internet speeds are seriously WAY better with this rom. I'm in NYC, so you would expect awesome speeds here is hspa + sadly though, through various phone I have gone through (HTC tilt, tilt2, iPhone 3, 3gs, 4, xperia x10, dell streak, captivate, infuse, HTC aria) these inlcude phones my wife had as well. But point is, the guest and best speed ibwould get was surprisingly from my trust xperia where I would get between 3-4 Mbps down, 1-1.5 up. With this rom, I'm getting 6-8Mbps down and 1.5-2 up. This is happening constantly. In the Bronx, Brooklyn and even overly crowded Manhattan, which is where I experienced my lowest in the low 4's. I'm just amazed. Now I'm really gonna get into lestats kitchen and optimize other things and see how it works out but this rom does not need much IMO. I've used it for 3 days now. Battery has been better I guess. I'm used to having to charge my phone every night. But I do notice under heavy usage it withstands the load. My phone Jan my mp3 player for my morning commute to work and home on public transportation and I use stereo Nokia Bluetooth headset.

You dont have to unroot anything.
v20c is the firmware update release by rogers canada. (its the Gingerbread update) the first GB update with a near by baseband.
Keep through the forum about flashing the v20c.kdz file.
from your tag your using rogers already? you might be able to OTA that update.
