DSP, what's the story? - Nook Color General

Anyone have the story on why we don't have DSP support on Froyo, Honeycomb ect...?
I've seen a few comments referring to the DSP, but haven't seen any mention of DSP chip specifics. Does anyone know the actual DSP chip model/specs.?
Just curious, if we ever do get the DSP support, will it make Youtube video run smoothly?
If NC could do a good job with video, it would great.
Regards,
Mike

I ended up finding a blub claiming to know the DSP chip TMS320C64x+™ DSP note posted by Zeo near the bottom.

Guess my thread is moot. Looks like Froyo 0.6.6 finally gets DSP support.

not possible as of yet
Why is that? There are apps on the market that can do this.

I posted a thread about this at the Cyanogen forums a little while ago:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/1584-video-camera-audio-quality-examples/
The culprit is the AMR codec and abysmal bitrate. I'm not an expert, but from what I have been able to piece together, the ability of the phone to record video and audio is somehow limited by the radio and the formats and containers it can handle. For whatever reason, it is presently non-trivial to get it to write (say) h264 video with AAC audio. But I do think there's demand for this so hopefully we'll see it at some point.
I'm thinking this belongs in the Q&A section...

How do / Can I connect a USB DAC to the SGS?

I recently got a portable amplifier with USB DAC connection (iQube v2). Now, since there's no true audio line-out from the SGS, I was wondering if one can connect the SGS to the USB DAC for audio out instead.
Any info will be hugely appreciated! Thanks.
audio out? are you joking? wth do you think that audio jack is ).
As far as I know, the SGS has no digital audio out, only analogue, so theres no way to connect it to your DAC.
The analogue-out on the SGS is quite good btw, and so is the built-in dac so theres not much need for external dac either.
i have been using my pair of cx-300 for about 3 and a half years now and they are unbeatable at sound quality. if you want good soung, go look for some very good headphones.
You can always try and let us know what happens...
I have USB DAC, but I connect it to the PC, I dont use it on the road...

Sennheiser IE8 here. Lets have an offtopic top-tier IEM party
Ontopic: I think with voodoo sound app, you can make your phones-out behave pretty much as a line-out, preampwise. Its still not a true line-out but for practical purposes that doesnt really matter.
The other issue that I'm having is jitter from the SGS.
Already using voodoo sound v7, from voodoo kernel 5.5.3. Voodoo Control with everything ticked except "mono downmix" (as recommended by supercurio). Every now and then, I still get a little jitter when I'm playing my music (FLAC mostly, and MP3 320kbps CBR).
At the moment, I use either a Cowon D2 or a MZ-RH1 as my source. The RH1 sounds better IMO, but discs can be an issue (not really that portable). The D2 is also great, but lacks a true line-out.
Guess I may be on the market for a decent source.

Sounds like youre maybe the type thats just never quite satisfied
I find the SGS with voodoo sound to be a quite capable portable source (compared to portable players in general but especially for a phone) that has no problems delivering into high end headphones. But sure, its always possible to find better and drag that along. Probably wrong forum for that though.

[Q] video playback on latest cm7?

Hey guys,
I think I read somewhere that the nook color CM7 nightly builds got the functionality of hardware supported video playback(?) Is this true? Does this mean I can play .avi (DivX and xvid) files smoothly using something like yx player/rock player without having to convert it to .mp4?
I am contemplating a nook color. All the other features seem great. Looks fun to mess around with. A good video playback would be an additional plus for me
I have had pretty good luck using Moboplayer and a bunch of videos I made with Handbrake for my iPod touch using the default iPod Touch profile. They are playing well and look good. Handbrake is free and it works pretty fast. I know you said you did not want to do MP4 but you might take a look at retranscoding.
I'm using CM7 nightly 102.

As good as Stock 1.1.0?
pgrunwald, have you tried .avi files?
Okay. Hardware Acceleration will only work with specifically encoded for Nook Mp4's. (Yes videos for ipod touch, etc... will work, as their resolution is under the maximum the nook can handle) For more information as it's just to much to type... Look up the video threads by Dalingrin and Chisleu, they have all the information on that.
Now .Avi files. Play fine in software mode in any of the players you listed. That said, I'm gathering if you're watching an avi file, it's not over 720p, as that would just be stupid... But common "scene" releases of unmentioned files, do play fine.
720p Mkv's however absolutely require the OC kernel and in my current experience, the .29 kernel based CM7. The .32 kernel at this point seems to have trouble with 720p, it's not unwatchable, but it did stutter from time to time on my NC.
I'm using vitalplayer neon and it works fine for xvid avis. I didn't convert anything or check anything. I just used a file that I had downloaded to watch on my desktop. It stuttered a bit at the start but played smoothly after that. I was amazed. NC keeps doing more. I wasn't even overclocked at the time.

Could you elaborate on this a bit more please (bitrate, framerate etc.)? I could never play 720p on my Nook. Currently I have one of the recent CM7 nightlies, and even OC'd to 1300 no player (Mobo, Rock, etc.) can't handle any of my 720p mkv's properly. It was also the case with OC'd .29 kernel. It's not that it just stutters every now and then; it's a heavily slowed down slideshow.

To be honest, I can't really give specifics as the files are long gone that I did use. I was fully able to watch things like 720p trailers (Pirates of the Carribean) and the anime series Kaiji 2nd in Mkv at 720p.
If I get a chance I'll take another look.

Well if nothing else, I can guarantee playback of anything under 720p without encoding.
Anything above that is honestly overkill, not only for size of the file, but for the size of the screen; you just won't see a difference between a properly encoded dvdrip and a 720p bluray-rip.
That said, if you're like me, where you have certain files that are already encoded at 720p and would rather not "re-encode" or "re-obtain" them, then I can honestly say (in my experience) that the .29 kernel nightlies or Phiremod 6.2 with OC kernel (4/24) has played 720p files fine in Moboplayer. Not only has it played them fine, but it's not had a problem with soft-subtitles. Again though, this is from my experience in the past and I've been switching between .29 and .32 kernels, so I've been avoiding 720p files like the plague.
.32 kernel may be able to play 720p in the near future however, Dalingrin has responded a couple of times to my one man complaint team about the difference in video playback in the two kernels, and he's said that he is currently working on some major overhauls of the system that may or may not help address this issue.
so what I gather from here is that it handles video fine, even .avi as long as it isn't 720p? I also read something about it handling flash video fine @ 800mhz, 720p..?

Flash video is a whole 'nother ball park. Again, I find .29 kernel to be the best at handling flash and have personally had problems with .32's kernel for longer videos.
That said, I'm one of the only few complaining (possibly the only one), so it's possible it's just me or my source sites/files.
720p flash I'm going to assume to be dodgy at best, there are few tablets on the market that I know of (i.e tegra 2 processor) that still have trouble with 720p flash videos.
That said, flash videos of Standard quality look fine, and the youtube app allows you to play HD (I'm assuming it's 480p) videos without fail and look very nice.
use rockplayer lite
I completely understand not wanting to reencode your videos but keep something in mind. If the video can play in the stock video player then it will be much, much better on your battery life. If a video plays in the stock video player then all the decoding can be done with the DSP co-processor. Leaving the CPU sit nearly idle which will result in dramatically less power consumption. Just something to consider.
And yes, better video playback may be coming to CM7 in the near future if I can get a some changes in. Perhaps even DSP 720p decoding...but shh, you didn't hear that from me. Oh and maybe even *some* flash hardware acceleration though I won't know if will work until I can test it since its closed source.
Don't get your hopes up for the last two because they may or may not work with the changes I have planned.

it's been really cruel of you to have woken up those hopes!!!! After all that time I reconciled with the fact I have to reencode vids...
Keeping my fingers crossed. If you achieve that, I am going to write a script which keeps tapping "donate to Dalingrin" at Nook Tweaks every time I watch 720p

Haha, even with 720p support you will still likely need to reencode many of your videos due to the codecs being picky.

[Q] S4 active & Bluetooth APt-x

I recently purchase the At&t S4 active and a pairs of Sennheiser MM-550X,
Those of you who don't know apt-x is codec for bluetooth to keep the sound quality as the original (really close to) source sound files,
in compare to normal Bluetooth which downgrade sound quality to near 120Kbps.
SGS4 active supposed to support this but on the web there's so little information about it,
So.. I want to know how can i confirm Mine got the Apt-x? from what I heard some android version Not support this..
Does Acid audio engine support this?
Is anyone tried?
Thanks!

Thread moved
Thanks
FNM
Also interested, how to make sure that APT-X is working on new 4.4 Kitkat stock ROM? Thx!
Sorry for bumping this thread.
I would also like to know if there is a possible way of seeing if APT-x is active.
From my experience, I don't seem to hear any difference in quality between my S4 and iPad, but the iPad does not support APT-x.
The quality sounds terrible compared to a wired connection, loosing fine detail present in a 320kbps track. It also sounds compressed as well.

LG Quad DAC Tips, Tricks, Etc...

Howdy All,
For those who have had a LG V device in the past you'all know what's coming - how do we trick the quad DAC into high impedance mode (HIM) or AUX mode?
For those who don't know here's a little background. The previous LG V series phones have had a very nice DAC and AMP setup which can almost meet the standards of audiophile quality. The thing was that in the later phones (V20 and V30 AFAIR) the software was designed to "smart switch" which mode the AMP was in. HIM and AUX mode settings had the loudest volumes and was corresponding to the headphone impedance value. The normal setting had the lowest volume designed for low impedance IEMs. Note that the AMP setting doesn't really have a bearing on sound QUALITY, just sound VOLUME. I'm guessing but the reasoning for this is to prevent blown IEMs and blown eardrums. I'm going to find the link for the old V30 quad DAC thread and some stuff tried and what worked in order to activate AUX mode and/or HIM. BTW having ROOT on the phone allows for adjusting this setting as needed, which is why I went with the unlocked version this time around. My pair of MrSpeakers Aeon Flows have low impedance but need power in order to drive properly and the AMP in the V series phones would only trigger normal impedance mode.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/help/modes-quad-dac-t3690567
So that brings us to the V40. Does it have a quad DAC? Yes it does. Does it have a smart switching AMP? So far my indications are yes it does. Do the old tricks from the V30 days work on the V40? I don't think that they do. I have multiple extension cables, which I use for triggering the AUX mode as well as an impedance adapter (50ohms I think). The old methods of using the extension cable, the adapter, and both don't seem to have an effect on the AMP setting. My Sony MDR-1As are much louder than my Aeon Flows...bummer for me.
UPDATE - Upon further testing with the help of this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apptrio.hi_fi_status I was able to trigger the AUX AMP mode and it kicked up the volume on my Sony's quite a bit! Unfortunately when I triggered HIM the volume of the sound did not change from the normal mode. Basically what I did was take a 2ft 3.5mm cable extension (male on one side female on the other) and plug it in WITHOUT THE HEADPHONE CABLE ATTACHED. Once the HIFI status app displayed AUX mode I then plugged in my HPs and BOOM, here comes the volume!
Anyways if you have anything to add or have any questions feel free to hit us up. When root is available I'll also make updates to this thread if need be.
Have a good one :highfive:
Is that why the volume is stuck at 75?

If you have your volume go up to 75 and it doesn't blow out your ears then it is due to the AMP being in normal mode.

Have you tried the mobile version of foobar2000? As it's the preferred app for FLAC files and such on the PC, I imagine the mobile version is quite good as well. I wonder how it compares to Neutron Player. I definitely will give both a shot and compare.
On the note of music players, despite making fun of it (it's quite easy to do) and being certain it would fail, I recently converted to Tidal. The quality is really astounding, and the music library is almost as complete as Spotify/etc. Additionally, some albums are available as "masters" that are actually encoded with MQA!
Your right about Tidal. It sounds awesome. The price difference isn't worth it though.
Treesap! I'm comparing those players right now! I'm listening to metal (Tesseract), jazz (Yellowjackets), all flac, and so far I like both foobar2000 and Neutron. The built in player is not satisfying me yet, except for mp3 (I See Stars - Treehouse). Does anyone know if it's necessary to disable the built in effects to make other players work independently? That's what I did with v20. Just remember how different expectations and taste we all have in regards to music/sound
And maybe I should add that I'm just a regular user (with high demand on sound quality), who can't afford too fancy earbuds or extras right now. Any advice regarding good quality sound (budget price) earbuds would be very appreciated

Well I'm sure there's some tech guys here who can give us the correct details, but for me the answer is yes! After tuning it up for my ears, the Poweramp does it in a perfect way. If I play mp3 or flac it's giving me perfect sound all over, compared to the lg app were I had to tune it up for individual files.
have any of you engaged the DAC for streaming, for Google music in particular?
there was mention by some last year that one DAC player and an add-on app could do that for Google music. i just don't keep much on my phone and streaming is my way, so I'm still looking at taking advantage where i can. I'm running V4A on a rooted V30 now and looking at the V40's development.

Hope the following can help, and also, please correct me anyone, if my way of thinking here is some way wrong or misleading.
A assume you've already taken part of the Poweramp forum?! It's the only way to get the hi-res add-ons. And you obviously have to log in to be able to download.
I'm not 100% sure about how poweramp and the built in eq interacts, but after fiddling for a bit, it seams like what I'm sharing here works best when it comes to volume and sound. Have in mind our individual reference of sound and of course, what kind of earphones/buds you have (this is based on flac files).
You can see I've put replay gain on max in Poweramp settings. You can easily change RG in the eq later to fit individual album.
If anyone else have suggestions, please don't be shy

Speaking of the DAC, does anyone know if the V40 has support for MQA? The V30 has it, and they recently added support for it to the Essential PH-1, but no mention of it for the V40, just "high quality Quad DAC". I suspect that it does, because they probably used the same chip for the V40, but I see no mention of it anywhere, so far.
