I am running a Custom ROM for a while and everything had been going smoothly. Last night I installed the Beta Version of Norton Utilities which I found on the Market and my phone started locking up and having Forced Closures. Though it might have been something all the sudden occurring in the ROM or the Kernel that caused this I don't think it was so I was wondering can an App mess up your phone?
Thanks

I tried to uninstall it but I not 100% sure it did. I use Tibackup and it would lockup when I did uninstall. I did a Force Close and Reboot and though it don't see the App listed anymore I am not 100% sure if everything from the App was removed. I then tried to Restore my Data and Apps with Full Tibackup Restore and my phone went into Reboot Loop.

Yes although I forget the app
I am sure a lot of this had to do with me having a Custom Rom and testing a "Beta" App. I should have known better esp. since it was "Norton's Product" and the experiences I have had with them on a PC and how they truly "invade" a system.....

Plus a billion! I know how hard it is to scrub Norton off my computer, I wouldn't let it anywhere near my phone.
Sent from my Craptivate with the leaky rom
Norton
Where was time when Norton was king. Symantec was the downfall of Norton.
Thanks for your post........as I hear more about viruses and smartphones, I have been wondering if I need some kind of protection? Maybe not.......
i have yet to find an antivirus program that wasn't more of a virus than the viruses it protects against. i refuse to run them on my home computer or my phone. they screw things up and give you more popup windows than the internet did a couple of years ago before browsers started blocking them. but that is just me do what you must to keep your stuff safe. as for the app wrecking android i had one on my backflip that was causing havoc but i too forget what it was.
I was a Big Norton's fan on my PC back when Norton's first appeared but as the more and more things Norton/Symantec added the worse the product got it was like the Protection it provided was worse than having a Virus. The only thing I am running on my phone that seems to add some protection is the app called 'Lookout". I started using this app as I way to find my phone if I missed placed it. I guess they have updated it because I notice now that when I add a new app Lookout does some sort of scan and it says that the new app is safe. I don't know what it is looking at when it does the Scan since I didn't make any setting changes to evoke this Scan. BTW I am using Free Lookout version.

I know were getting close to needing AV for our phones - but the day I install Norton on a LINUX device - I will commit seppuku.

So my question is, when you wipe/reflash something, is there a way to keep all the Protected/Paid apps installed when you start up? Normally, a wipe will break all of your protected/paid apps and list them in the launcher as "com.XXXX.XXXX" or even "org.XXX.XXX". Launching them results in the infamous Force Close box.
This is indeed on Apps2SD and with Cyan's new 3.9
Have you tried running the fix_permissions script?
I'll reboot and run it now

Back up all your apps using MyBackupPro or Backup for Root Users. I have all mine on my sd so they re-install automatically. I don't have to do anything, and they don't load up as com.xxxxx.htc.. blah. But I use Backup for Root Users when I do have to format my ext2 and this brings them back no problem.
Hmm interesting. I've never used Backup for Root Users with apps, just the data. Takes too long for me with all my apps...but I managed to find the spare time to re-install, that was fun . Thanks guys!
my advice to anyone on here who is going to play with anything on their phone:
before you do it, make sure you have enough time allotted to fix EVERYTHING, as if you were starting from scratch. that way, before you begin, you can have the peace of mind to know that if anything goes wrong, you've got all the time you need to fix it.
murphy's law: whenever you think you're in for a quick fix, theres a long road ahead of you.

Wouldn't hurt to have a backup unlocked GSM phone too. That's one of the nice things about GSM-based technologies... if your phone dies for whatever reason, pop the sim out and put it in a backup phone. You'll still be able to be contacted while you fix the primary device.
I had this issue too with the same Rom and with the previous version. This is how I solved it.
First I deleted all apps, etc from my SD card while it was connected to my Mac, just made it easier. (I was also running a previous Apps2Sd, not the one built into the mod, which I believe was the root of the issue. I didn't use the old apps2sd once I upgraded the ROM, and I may be way off but I find it suspect.
Then I wiped and reinstalled the ROM. Yea I had to reinstall my apps but...
...before doing all that I had tried removing and then reinstalling an app. A reboot/power cycle of the G1 would result in the icon being gone again and that ugly error message in regards to the app.
When I did the step I mentioned prevously, delete, wipe, etc I've not had any further issues.
I've also since updated by fs from ext2 to ext3 but that was after the fact.
Cyan's mod is by far my favorite and consistently stable and well documented. I'm glad I was able to correct my issues.

Did you manage to find a solution to this problem? If you did, could you please post it. I flash different ROMs often. Having to reinstall my paid apps over and over again is starting to get very annoying.

Hey guys last week my phone has been starting to act real buggy and I began to get a FC saying android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Has anyone experienced a similar issue as this? The phone has completely stopped working and I can't do anything on it. I've tried a hard reset, soft reset, reloading 2.1 and practically everything else. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you!
When you say the phone completely stopped working, what do you mean? You can't even power it on? Or it comes on but just won't make calls, send texts, etc? Provide us with some more details please. Are you rooted? If so, what ROM were you using? etc. etc.
Also, did you install any new apps lately? Some cases of this FC error have to do with an installed app that is malfunctioning, and simply uninstalling the troubled app, then rebooting, will solve this.
I am having the same trouble, but my phone started by saying that I was running out of space, though I hadn't installed anything new. I am thinking it is with the latest Facebook update. The battery runs out fast and the phone has filled up and now it's crashing.
I think I am going to uninstall the FB update and see how that goes.

The newest Facebook version does drain the battery really fast -- it basically prevents the phone from sleeping. See this post on how to fix it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7572716&postcount=948
Or of course, just totally uninstalling FB would fix that too

Well I keep getting that error everytime I FC it and it prevents me from doing anything. The touch screen won't work at all either. I was rooted running PureHero but I just flashed 2.1 back on it (the official one from Sprint) and the problem still existed. I did a hard reset and the phone continues to show this message even without any apps installed.
Wow, that seems strange then. If it's doing this on just plain stock without any apps installed then it sounds like it could just be something defective with the phone itself. I would say re-run the official stock 2.1 RUU from Sprint (to remove Root) and then take it back to a Sprint store and see if they will replace your phone.

Ive been running cm6 on my n1 for a month or so now and yesterday something very odd happened.
My phone was being sluggish and it was stuck on gprs in an area i always get full 3g. So i rebooted and i noticed maps decied to uninstall it self. So i go to the market and install it again and it tells me its already installed and its gonna overwrite the previous data. Then i noticed swype was gone so i go to reinstall it and again it tells me its already there and i install anyway. I try to type something with swype now reinstalled and the keyboard pops up but when i type something it just slides back down. So i reboot again and more apps are missing. So i go to the market and it fc's. then almost everything i try to do fc's on me. I tell my friend and he jokes you got a virus. So since im gonna reflash anyway i download the antivirus free app and it tells me everything is infected or whatever. So whatever i just reflash cm6 and install my apps and the only app antivirus flags is android wifi tether which i got from code.google. Anyway i reflash and just dont install wifi tether and all has been well.
Does anyone know wtf just happened? I know everyone says theres no suck thing as a virus on android and i know that the antivirus app is also questionable but i have no idea what just happened. I havent installed or done anything different than i usually do. I would really like a logical explanation of what happened.
Your apps were just taking a while to load. I've seen it happen before. I've opened my app drawer, and watched my apps slowly appear, one by one, at 5 to 10 second intervals...
Might be time to wipe?

Hi there,
I am just having the most weird thing on my phone since yesterday. Some apps won't open. I mean, I click on them and nothing happens, no error message, nothing. I thought it was a virus so I ran the antivirus (trustgo) but nothing is found.
The strangest thing is that sometimes if I insist and keep touching an app it may open.
If I reset my phone it starts working normally again. Then I install my apps but if I reboot it...bam! I cannot even drag and drop the apps!
Does anybody know something about this ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I'd say don't try to figure out why. Just do a factory reset, if that doesn't work, reflash.
If that doesn't work get a new phone.

Thank you. I have done the factory reset and it works fine. It's just that I begin installing my apps and then I reboot it ( and rebooting always now to check on this) and that's when it happens.
I mean, if it was an app with a virus, the antivirus program would let me know, right?

I don't think viruses on Android work that way. They just steal some of your info
Antiviruses on Android are still at Alpha/Beta stage I believe. I think it was an app that messed up with your system files or something.

Yes, indeed, as soon as I flashed a room, I turned off all animations so that ( supposedly) it would have no lag at the homescreen. All this time thinking about a virus, a malware. I was even thinking that the ROMS I flashed were not working well, etc and it was that....OH GOODNESS!!!!!!!
Thank you very much! What I will do now is that I will set animations at 0.5 then.

To fix this problem, go into App Management and find Xperia Home, then wipe its cache

You need to give more details bud. We are not mediums here.
Which version of the phone do you have? Where did you buy it? Rooted, non-rooted? What weird things, other than taking screenshots? How exactly do you understand that it is taking screenshots, does it give you a notification or do they just appear in the gallery? How often does it happen, is it random or does it also happen when you do certain tasks?
If you need help with such a potentially complicated issue, you need to give as many details as possible so people can help you without guessing everything.
On Android 9 and above it's almost impossible to have an embedded rootkit that a factory reset won't kill. On 8 and below it is.
So it's something you installed (including updates), or that's living in your data or one of the factory installed apps. Fun times

That's complete overkill. More than likely a factory reset is all that's needed... and greater care when downloading.
Pre-Pie OS's are susceptible to rootkits that can breached protected partitions but not the more modern Android versions if I remember correctly.
This is an example of one that requires a reflash to totally wipe it from the phone:

I disagree, tot overkill at all if its a persistent malware. Plus if you want peace of mind it is about as simple of a process as loading the factory ROM. Why take a risk?

When I typed that original post I was using the phone and the keyboard kept screwing up and I was exhausted. I have factory reset the phone. The strange things that were happening like when I'd hit my recent apps tab at the bottom, if open say Ebay app then Chrome. I'd hit the recent and it would show gallery and settings. Since the factory reset it has still been taking screenshots. I've only had this phone about 20 days and got it at bestbuy. It's over the 15 day period to just take it back but hadn't been incredibly long so I guess we will see what they say. I dont do alot of app downloading or visit a bunch of websites and so on so I have no clue how this happened. Here's the real kicker, this stuff is also happening on my wife's phone (a11) I am honestly thinking about throwing the a11 in the trash and trying to get this one replaced. It's so damn frustrating it's caused arguments because I'm the one who will spend time learning how to do stuff with this. Like how to use everything the phone is capable of and can look in the settings and see that the "tracking device" in the settings that can UNLOCK YOUR PHONE, ACCESS YOUR CONTACTS" is the find my phone app that you installed from Samsung. So of course I am a "hacker" and really know nothing about this crap. And she's the person who will download every survey and shopping app she can find. Try something bud, in the settings there is the palm swipe capture option. When you find it try and disable it and see if the issue persists. If your phone has no virus, it might have some issue with the gestures or the screen and it might be getting mistaken that you are trying to make a screenshot.
And regarding your wife, you gotta sit her down, smash on the table with your hand so you can get her attention for a bit, and show her some videos about security and the risks involved with ignorant behaviors in the digital world.
Good luck.

I have the palm swipe off. She reset hers and says it's still doing "weird stuff" but this has been such an extreme issue with us that I can't and won't touch her phone. Because even with her sitting there watching me if I'm going through **** too fast for her to see exactly what's happening it's like I'm asked to slow down and I try to... Then she's will be like well what's this and start touching **** on the screen and u lost where I was in the first place because I then have to explain something that was just there.. Like if I'm in running processes and it's like WHATS THAT. And it will be a system operation that she read somewhere is "a concern for vulnerability" and doesn't understand that it doesn't mean that because that's there that it's a problem.. It's there normally and it is possible that's a way for security to be compromised.. Hopefully you can see the pattern I'm going in..... I am pretty good with this stuff for a power user. I know what oden is.. I know what a ROM is and stuff but I have never actually loaded my own ROM on a phone. And the fact that I sort of understand some of this is working to a huge disadvantage because it's like.. Well you know how to do this stuff so no wonder she's concerned.. When in fact I don't know how to do this stuff.. I made (foolishly) the comment when I was showing a process used by find my phone to her and my sister... The fact that I just showed you this process running that your asking me about you're just viewing it in a different place shows that if I wanted to track you I'd do it and you'd be too stupid to ever find out... And it was just frustration.. I meant Id just look at your Google history or something along that mannor.. Anyways I'm gonna be heading to bestbuy to see what they say.. As far as her phone is concerned I'd rather just spend the 200 bucks and throw it in the trash. I can't do that with the s21 so this is where I am with all this. I wad actually told by my family not to worry about it.. So what if someone steals your bank info it will be fraud and you won't be responsible for it anyway.. So just forget about it and use it....and here I am
This isn't rocket science... or a soap opera
Do a factory reset then change your Google account password.
Don't load anything until it's verified to be functioning ok*.
Then be careful what you load.
*If that fails reflash the firmware.
