Hi everyone.
I am experiencing very slow HSDPA speeds while using wireless tethering on my sgs gt i9000
Initially I thought it was vodafone UK and coverage. But I tested the same sim on a Desire HD with windows 6.5 and I got three times the speed (using speedest on my laptop)
Is there any known issue with wifi tethering and the sgs?
What speeds are you getting?
What country/provider are you in?
What firmware/modem are you using?
As I said, I am on vodafone UK, Doc's 9.5 JS3 rom, JPY Modem and I get about 1mbps at best with full 3g/HSDPA coverage
Thanks for your input!
Nobody uses their phone as a mobile access point? :/
First of all, it won't let me activate it. I tried it on the original Froyo and Darky's Rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957219
What is the behaviour you are getting?
It says I am outside the coverage area, when, in fact, I have full coverage.

Hello all:
I've recently upgraded from the "leaked" ATT WM6 ROM to a ROM built from the Aussie 3 WM6 ROM with the "leaked" ATT WM6 Extended ROM.
With this combination 2G data works great, however, I have found that 3G data doesn't work at all for me.
It looks like it is connected, and will even try to switch to HSDPA mode when attempting to access data but I can't move any data up or down.
Was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what to check?
Thanks.
edit - 3G voice does work properly, so it isn't like I'm being denied access to the 3G network
I also switched from the Leaked ATT ROM to the Australia3 ROM, however I am not using any of the ATT Extended ROM stuff.
My 3G has worked fine
MS
???
I am having the same problem with my 3g data. my phone seems to connect but it will not open any sites. When I am on edge it works fine. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to fix this?
I have the same problem. My location is the NYC Metro area.

same issue.....in the metro area as well......i went back to the leaked ATT rom since then.....hangs every once in a while but its still better than having WinMo5 in my opinion....
changed to vodafone
I had the same problem on a business trip to NYC. The Aussie 3G rom lost internet. I switched to the vodafone and haven't had a problem in NYC or back in SF where I live.
Well I went back to the Voda version and everything works fine. Does any one have an idea why the Aussie rom 3G will not work in NYC?
I went to the Voda ROM too and now everything is working perfectly...
Hi everyone,
was just wondering if anyone knows the difference in speeds of all the different types of connections available for the diamond2, i know that gprs, edge, hspa and wcdma/umts are available but which is the best
Hope someone know the answer to this!
HSDPA7.2>HSDPA3.6>HSDPA1.8>EDGE>GPRS
in Taiwan,
GPRS just like modem, yes , that modem you try to connect to internet 15years ago.
and HSDPA3.6 just like ADSL modem , download about 200~300kb
Yesterday I ran a speedtest on my mobile (another phone then the Diamond 2) and I reached 651KB/s. Not that bad, and I know it was something around GPRS, since that phone doesn't support faster. Then I used the SAME site on my computer and I reached 893KB/s. Great that this is so fast!
EDIT:
It was EDGE (I just checked online what the top speed of this phone was, Samsung E900).
To test it, get your phone and go to this URL:

Hey peeps,
I have a SGS i9000 connected to Rogers Wireless. I'm running Doc's ROM v7.
I have very very slow wireless internet (3G, if thats what im connected to). I used SpeedTest.net and my downloads are at 33 Kilobits/s... so yeah very slow. I've called Rogers and they said its because I have an unlocked phone?? That is doesn't garuntee that 3G will work but isn't this speed slow for 2G/Edge?
If anyone can help that would be great as im stuck on a 500MB plan with them and I feel like I'm getting no help from them.
It due to reception. I'm on rogers with i9000 as well. Try it at a different location also check if you have 850 band enabled. Places like york dale mall I come to a halt but at work I'm fine.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I will check other areas, but its wierd because I live right downtown in my city and can see more than 3 towers. How do I check that my 850 band is enabled?
Alright so I checked my bands and all are selected.
In the Status bar is a G with up and down arrows, ive read that that means im connected but in GPRS... not even Edge!
I actually didn't notice at first(since 3g is patchy where I live) but since switching to the overcome rom my tab will connect to 3g but as soon as data transferring begins/resumes it will switch back to "H" which is thier high speed "Edge" network.
Baseband version: I9000UGJK3
Could this be the at&t modem that overcome provides?
Are there any other modems I could test out that might be better?
Thanks for your help.
found what i was looking for here
My toolbar still shows "H" during data transfers ("3G" otherwise) but the speeds seem fine, so I'm not sure what the issue is with that.
H is HSDPA which is faster 3G. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSDPA
Ok that makes more sense, thanks.
Speeds seem to be the same with the jm2 modem, anybody else done testing on the rogers network?
Hello all,
I am using a Bell Canada GT on Rogers in Canada (with JPZ modem).
All works good (I have internet and phone) - however I never seem to use 3G.
The 3G indicator comes on for a second or two, but then the GT switches over to a non 3G data mode.
I would think 3G is the fastest - and it would be great to use it.
Do I need to use a different modem file? Or maybe different settings?
Please help.
Thank you all!
What is it switching to? H, or G, or EDGE? There is a Bell modem - JK3. Maybe try that? Takes only a few seconds to find out.
It switches to H
H is a half-step faster than 3g. It's short for HSPA (high speed sumpin-sumpin).
Thank you so much for explaining. I googled hspa and you are right. I have learnt something from you.
Also, it seems then that there is no need to touch the modem file.
Thanks again!
I wouldn't change it - it sounds like you get good results.
