[Q]Samsung Galaxy Tab wifi adhoc network connecting issue. - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a new Samsung Galaxy tab recently. In the first place, it could not see the adhoc network shared from my laptop. (Another device can connect to it.)
Then, I did lots of research and rooted it then changed wpa_supplicant file as discussed in the forum.
Now, I can see my adhoc network. BUT, when I tap it and try to connect to it, it fails on "Authenticating XXXX(adhoc)..." and Disconnected.
Can anybody help? The adhoc is really important to me, as I do not have a big capped Mobile Internet Plan. Without the network, the Samsung Galaxy Tab turns to a big size PSP.
Many thanks in advance.
BTW, it works on normal wireless network without any issue (At home).

It's your first post, so I'll cut you a little slack, but next time, use search first before asking!
If you had, you'd have found threads like this which should help you.
Remember - search is your friend!
Regards,
Dave

Thanks for your quick response.
I have searched and tried for nearly 2 weeks and followed the exact percedures mentioned in that thread, but no luck.
I believe it is a seperate issue and may need a little bit more tweak to solve it.
Cheers,
GA

My apologies! I didn't read your post fully, and didn't notice that you'd already tried wpa_supplicant.
Are you running Windows 7? If so, I suggest trying Connectify or Virtual Router which turns your laptop into an infrastructure hotspot.
Regards,
Dave

Yes, I am running WIN7 and I have tried to used both Connectify and Virtual Router. But, I have an "OLD" (2 years) Lenovo T61 and the wifi card (Intel 4695AGN) is not supported by ether Connectify or Virtual Router. (Please see following message.)
C:\Windows\system32>netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=vodafone_one key=Galaxy_P1000!
The hosted network mode has been set to allow.
The SSID of the hosted network has been successfully changed.
The user key passphrase of the hosted network has been successfully changed.
C:\Windows\system32>netsh wlan start hostednetwork
The hosted network couldn't be started.
The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation.
C:\Windows\system32>

I have nearly the same Problem:
- Windows 7 (64 bit) on my Laptop (Dell Studio XPS 1640) and installed Connetify.
- Connetctify says it is not able to run as AccessPoint but AdHoc works fine, i.e. with my phone (Experia X1).
- My Galaxy Tab can see Connectify (after applyingthe suggested wpa_supplicant) but hungs with something like “Getting IP-Adress from…” and then switches the Connectify-Link to “Disabled”.
I tried it also with disabled Firewall, just to be sure: same result. Has someone a nice idea to this? Would really make me happy!
Cheers,
Thomas

please post your exact model of the galaxy tab and the software version

The following thread contains a discussion about adhoc wifi tethering.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932082&page=48
Try using Wifi Analyzer to see if the channel you are using is congested. I too was having problems getting my Galaxy Tab to connect to an adhoc wifi connection, but was able to successfully connect after changing the default channel 11 to a less congested channel.

Thanks for your input! The Glaxay is GT-P1000 FROYO.XWJJ3.
Have tried with different channels. Default was 1. Changed to 3, than even the Experia X1 did no more work. With channel 5,6 and 7 the Experia works, but the Galaxy does not: tries to get IP Adress and then disables the Connectify-Link.
Cheers

Hi, I had the same problem with my ace,but i could manage to connect to my ad-hoc network. but the problem now is i only connect, i still cant browse in internet with my phone,
what i did was to make an ad-hoc network-->turned internet sharing on.
and then in my phone-->wireless network-->wireless setting-->advance-->(then i have putted a tick for use static IP and then putted the Ipv4 address in gateway and for IP address the same thing as Gateway but with the change at the end of it and 255.255.255.0 for netmask and 8.8.8.8 for DNS1 and 8.8.4.4 for DNS2 and saved it,so i could connect to ad-hoc but still no internet connection

How to connect XDA IIi to broadband through WiFi connection?

I have BELKIN broadband router (Irish Eircom broadband). Is it possible to connect XDA IIi (alpine) to this router through WiFi connection??? If Yes - Help me!
Yes it is. If the router is on the default settings you just need to touch the antrenna symbol at the bottom of the Today screen, then the green square at the bottom right, then the WLAN box and turn on WLAN.
Does anyone have a guide on how to setup a secure connection between PC & Phone on WI-FI?
It's baffling the heck out of me!

Depends on the router, what ya got?
I dont have a router, I have a WI-FI PCI card and my router is conected via ethernet
So you are trying to set up an ad-hoc connection.
You need to set your wireless on both the computer and the PDA to ad-hoc.
To do this on the PC depends on your operating system and device. Set up your wireless connection on the PC first making sure it is set up as an ad-hoc network.
On your XDAIIi Start>Settings>Connections Tab>Network Cards
You should see the network you have set up on the PC, make sure the ad-hoc box is ticked and connect to it.
You may have to set the TCP/IP settings manually. If you have a problem with doing that post up what you have done and how far you have got.
Yes, I'v got a connection! But NetFront_v3.2 says "Cannot read page." So, i can not surf Internet.

Do you have the DHCP server turned on on the router?
Yes1 DHCP server IS turned on on the router.
OK, when you are connected and you click on the Wi-Fi icon on the bottom of the screen, does the network address match that of the router or has it set a default one?
Internet Connection Sharing
Depeding on your OS (is it windows/linux etc.) you'll nmeed to set up some form of proxy server or other packet forwarding to persuade the machine to accept packets on the WiFi card and to forward them to the Internet.
If you are using XP (or from memory 2K) you can switch on Internet connection sharing, follow the wizard and then browse to your hearts content.

Hi,
I also have a laptop with build-in Wifi and a qtek 2020i. I've shared the lan connection on the laptop and created a wirelles network. The laptop and qtek 2020i see each other but i can't surf on the qtek. i have windows XP.
The ip address on the qtek is fixed by default and is supposed to be 192. etc i read somewhere...
I use a modem/routeur (thomson 530) on which the laptop is connected (lan).
Could you please explain me how should i setup or manuallay choose the ip on my qtek?
Many thanks

perhaps i'll give that a try, it might work for me, i hope it does as i'm not having much luck
Hi Guys,
This is starting to get confused - there are two types of connection being set up here: -
Firstly a cabled connection between the PC and the router with a wireless card in the PC. in this instance you need to forward the packets from the wireless card to the ethernet card and then onto the router.
In this case, if you are using Windows 2K or XP use the Internet connection sharing wizard, this will then enable packet forwarding on your PC, with a "DHCP server" (not fully functional) on the wireless card, when you establish the Ad Hoc (set exactly the same SSID on both cards - remember it's case sensitive and that should be all you need for Ad-Hoc) wireless connection between the 2020i and the PC you should then find that you are assigned an IP address (192.168.0.x is the default from memory). You should then have the IP address of the Wireless Interface Card on the PC set as your default gateway and DNS server - you need each of these entries in order to able to connect to the Internet.
If you want to secure this connection, you can use WEP (40 bit or 128 bit Same Key same position on both SSID configs), though remember that if a sniffer collects about 300K packets, it is possible to use AirCrack to regain the wep key - paranoid but true.
If you have a wireless gateway, this should (in all probability) already have a DHCP service up and running on it (it's probably giving your PC all of the IP settings it needs) so all you should need is to establish a connection between these two devices. Switch wireless on on the 2020 and you should be prompted with a message box saying Your_SSID connects you to and offer you work and Internet, select Internet if there is a WEP key or other form of encryption enabled you will be prompted for a key. In theory you will have set all of this up on the router in the first place so probably have some idea of what you are doing.
Hope this helps, if not feel free to throw abuse.
Kind Regards
Dave
try this link:

I tried it last night and it got it working in about 5 minutes!! was well pleased . I'm using the infrastructure mode, got a XDAIIi and a D-Link G604T. I dont have any authentication setup, the only thing I use is the MAC based access list, so I had to add the XDA MAC into the router access list and for the rest I followed what the above link said.
Tip: make sure you do a reset for the settings to take effect, did'nt realise thats why it took me five minutes!
hiya... sorry to bug anyone about this... but i have a problem logging on wifi connection on my Xda IIi...
using a dell TrueMobile 2300 wireless router...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
WPA WiFi connection
The only secure WiFi connection I can use on my XDA IIi is via WEP. For some unknown reason I cannot connect using WPA.
Any ideas...

Connected to Wifi but cannot use Internet

Hi:
I have the HTC-branded TyTN II and I can connect to my Wifi network just fine, but none of the applications can access the Internet through this connection. The connection status shows as "connected" and the phone shows up in router's DHCP table. Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks in advance!
Try moving the WIFI power saving mode to the left: "Best Performance".
Don't know if this is "too obvious" but have you set the DNS lookup address?
oh man! another unlucky soul...like me
dont worry buddy, you are not alone in this "wireless problem" as i have an HTC Touch and unfortunately i have Windows Vista Home Premium installed in my laptop which has damn wifi.
same as yours, my HTC connects to the wifi i made in several ways with Security and Authentication Enabled in every way i can and also last with Open Authentication and Security as NONE
my network shows that my wifi is connected to my HTC but only LOCAL, which means you cant access internet, and strangely also, the wifi network is labelled as Unidentified Network, when the WIFI i made is given a solid name, like WIFY.
i checked out my HTC Touch with a friend who has Windows XP installed in his laptop and damn....i can browse as well as chat in Messenger, while being connected to his WIFI.
So i will tell you these by experience:
1st: its not a problem with your HTC TyTN II, so dont subject it to forced connection, like messing with your settings all day long while you try to connect it. cos simple truth is you cant (i m assuming you have windows vista as well)
2nd: its been like my third nite, with "vista+wireless connection+unidentified network" searched on google.
and somethings i came across, but didnt fix my problem includes:
> disable IPv6 from your NIC
> assign a MAC address filter to your NIC (Vista by default has Network Address set to Not Present, which can be found in your LAN Card > Properties > Advanced Tab)
And even my assumption that you're using Vista is wrong, let this be an INFO to other users here as well.
Damn, i m getting back to Windows XP!!!!!!!
So if you think your WiFi card needs a checkup or try these solutions i have mentioned, try google....its a saviour for all gadget dudes like us!!!!
Just to try and give a fuller picture - I have no such problems
I have a desktop running Win XP Pro, a laptop running Vista Home Premium and my Kaiser. All are connecting wirelessly thru a router using WPA encryption and using IE, Firefox for browsing, SMTP/POP3 clients for email and MSN. They are also connection to each other - desktop, laptop and Kaiser - no problem on any of them.
Yeah, having Vista on your network should be no issue with regards to connectivity of a device to a wi-fi network. However, having Vista on the network may make the vista computer invisible on the network map and make it unavailable on the network if you are using XP based computers as well. Not too sure about other Windows versions or different OSs. This is because the Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder component is not installed on the Windows XP-based computer. The patch to install on the XP based rigs is here. I ran into several networks with this issue and have cleaned them up with this patch. I even keep it on my Cruzer because I have seen it so much.
I know this doesn't help with the original query, but I wanted to ensure ayyum3 and cv2k3 know that Vista in the network will not affect any outside device's connectivity.
To the 2 fellas who are having this issue... are you using a software, or have you enabled the locking out external devices from connecting to your network? Also, have you ensured your wireless router has proper internet connection? To see the network yet be unable to access the internet leads me to believe it is a router-modem connectivity issue (albeit a simple IP addy issue, or a cable issue).
What kind of wireless router you using? Is it using the latest firmware for it?
Are you able to connect other wireless devices to the said router?
Are you able to connect your TyTN to some other AP (ie neighbours, cafe, starbucks, etc)?
did you try setting your wifi power mode to best performance
This was happening to me recently after I replaced my router...I ended up changing the channel the wlan was using from Auto (it was setting itself at channel 6) to channel 11. Channel 1 also worked. The other thing I did was disable the wireless speed enhancement features on the router. Now I can connect and surf with no issues...
I dont know what all that was about a vista pc but the OP's problem (from last november) would no doubt be that he had not set the wifi connection to connect to "the internet" or his device was set to use a network proxy for all connections.

Wi-Fi connects but NO data transfer

Hi,
I have just got the Diamond and I have two main problem.
1) Although I have connected the Diamond to my Home wireless network, there is no data transfer. Opera can not open pages, Youtube can not start even I can not update weather?
2) When I connect the Diamond to the Laptop / PC, all PC's and Laptops connected to my home network (wireless) drop from the connection and never connect again?
Thank you for your kind help...
I have same problem with my Diamond.
1) go to: startmenu->settings->connections->Wi-Fi->networkcard/adapter->and make sure that it says "my networkcard/adapter connects to internet"Also at the same tab open IEEE 802.11b/g Compitable Wi-Fi Adapter and try to a static ip matching the one your pc uses. (not sure about it since i can't recreate the problem atm..)
2) Try the thing I suggested in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=417664 (plz use search next time)

Thanks for your reply, but both of solutions do not work for me...
Any other suggestion?
Thanks for your help..
Try turning on wifi, then go in LAN WIRELESS and change in "improved performance"
All of this do not work for me too...
Go to Wireless LAN settings and there to power mode and set yo best battery.... that worked for me.
in "settings => connections => WiFi" is "Connected". In "Wireless Lan" there is Connected too... In log on my router there is MAC adress of Diamond as associated and authorized. All seems OK. But on Diamond do not work any internet connection (Weather, web, etc...). With Active Sync works fine. Laptop with the same settings works fine. But Diamond with WiFi... no way :-(
Any other suggestions?
Same problem after i made ROM update from 1.7... to 1.93. before works fine. no other software is istalled.
Been having an issue with connecting to my wireless network also for the last week. My phone is from orange in the UK. My wireless router is an Dlink 614+ on Virgin cable broadband.
The Diamond would connect intermittantly but then say 'not avaiable' after a period of time, or when trying to reconnect after diasbling/enabling wi-fi in the comms manager. Also, after restarting my router the device would connect for a while but not seem to 'hold' it's connection.
When the device was 'connected' I could not get opera/youtube to load a page, even though I could see the diamond in my router's log showing it connected with a leased ip address. What made it so annoying was that every other wireless mobile device/laptop I have owned has connected without any problem at all, leading me to beleive there was a problem with the phone. Again, this was rather frustrating as the phone was detecting avaliable networks but just not 'holding' the connection nor 'using' the connection in opera/explorer etc.
After searching on xda-developers and other forums for a possible known issue, I tried all the various suggestions including;
i/ increasing to best performance under power mode in Wireless LAN settings
ii/ Hard reset of router (even though other wireless devices were connected fine)
iii/ trying static rather than dynamic ip for my diamond in router settings
iv/ disabling any security/encryption on my router
v/ entering DNS settings in manually into my diamond
vi/ changing 'connect to' under wi-fi neteorks to 'Work' rather than 'the internet'
vii/ tried various roms
and other suggestions I had read about - all which didn't make a difference!
I was about to send the diamond back to Orange (here in the UK) but decided to give it one last go and change my router. I bought a Netgear WGT624 for 25 quid from PC today world and my diamond connected
straight away without an issue, and opera/youtube/messager all connected straight away to the internet. I have not lost connection once. So thats how I resolved it - obviously my device did not like 802.11b (on the original dlink router) even though all previous smartphones have connected fine and the diamond's wireless adapter is labelled b/g.
Hope that stops anyone wasting a week like I did, I would try it out on another router before making any decisions because the chip in the diamond seems a lot more picky to what it connects to than anything I've used in the past!
cheers
Linksys WAG54 is OK, Freebox is not perfect
It really seems to depend on the WiFi router.
I've had probems with my French Freebox (my ISP's ADSL+wifi router) using WPA2 AES. It would work fine, for half an hour maybe, then it would stop. It says it's connected but there is no data transfer. You can switch WLAN off and on, soft reset the phone... nothing will do. Then it will work again later on.
I downgraded encryption to TKIP and i experienced the same problem.
But then I've tried my old Linksys WAG54G router, using the exact same encryption protocol and key and it works perfectly (for hours)!
I've also tested free access (Paris public Wifi, Mc Donald's...) and they work fine.
As my ISP wifi box does not let me have a look at all the settings (beacon time, etc.) it is very difficult to tell what makes it not-so-compatible with my Diamond... But there must be something.

WiFi connection troubles

Dear friends,
I'm experiencing problems connecting to secured WiFi spots.
The device sees and connects to secured WiFi points correctly, the connection is good and stable. However it seems that nothing works through them - I cannot open any website. Honestly, I didn't try to connect to unsecured networks (I had no chance to find such).
Does anybody have the same problem? Is it solvable? Should I change something in WLAN configuration?
Please help.
Thanks.
Hello,
Try to change your wifi "Power mode" to "Best performance".
++
Alex
Did you looked up if your HD has a IP, and is listed in the list of dhcp clients (if you are using dhcp). For me it seems that the connection isn't set up correctly, but with the information given above its just a guess.
Same problem here. After two months of great operation and no changes, suddenly this.
This and similar problems are all over the threads.
Ditto, exactly the same probs, cannot acquire an ip address via dhcp from my home router.
Set one up manually and the HD connects to the network but cannot open up any sites, cannot connect to email and cannot download any rss feeds. It seems that any prog that needs to connect to the web cannot.
Same problems trying to connect using the mobile network. Tried a hard reset with no joy. Am going to try flashing a new rom.

reverse tethering

Dears,
I just finished to setup my laptop to be an AccessPoint for my nexus.
I did this creating a new ad-hoc wireless connection.
It works! ...for browsing websites
does not work for market or app web connection...
I configured proxy settings to enable websites browsing.
If I try change proxy settings on my phone, obviously websites browsing stops.
Note I'm inside an office network now and I cannot change or control about network setups.
any idea why android market does not work with my setup?
does market need some "special ports" opened?
help me please....
Just download connectify. It's a program that makes your computer a WiFi hotspot. I use it to get internet on my x 10, and it works flawlessly
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
eh......
I already tried... bit my network card is not supported by connectify...
The same with VirtualRouter.
The only way I has some success is as described before (ad-hoc network).
Please help me with that market issue...
Could it be that it's blocked by your company? Like can you go to youtube on your pc?
Like i understand you are using proxy to connect the net so http is allowd and all the others are closed.
correct: proxy is only working for http access.
I have troubles also with google sync, gmail, youtube, market etc...
I'm only able to surf the web via browser.
Note that wih my notebook I have access to all youtube... so cannot understand why it works whit notebook but does not work with nexusOne...
maybe notebook and nexus use different protocols or services that are closed by the proxy.
Any idea to make my ad-hoc network fully open?
I'm having trouble getting connectify to work... it loads up and runs fine on my Win7 x64 laptop, but when I try to connect with the N1 it appears to be eternally stuck at the "Obtaining IP Address" stage before it finally times out and the network state is reported as "Unsuccessful". I've tried both pulling the IP from DHCP and manually specifying a static IP address on the correct network, and I have attempted running both Android 2.1 and 2.2.
Even when specifying a static IP, I still get the "Obtaining address..." status before it fails out.
Any thoughts?
for me too: both with ad-hoc connection, Connectify (@home) or VirtualRouter (@home) I have same issue than you.
Sometimes n1 connects the wireless network with no problems, other times it dont connect the network... Dont know the reason. Only I saw that if you delete the ad-hoc network and create a new one it works... It's boring, I know... but works..
also I saw that @home connecting in same mode than in office I was able to navigate market, youtube and all other programs that need an internet connection .
This to confirm that the problem I'm having @office is caused by some LAN restrictions (filters, firewalls and something like this)
Cool, I'll give that a go when I get off work I suppose. I've only got about another week or so here in Afghanistan, but while I'm here the only accessible internet is a wifi access point that passes through a fairly restrictive firewall/proxy before hitting the satellite internet. I'm able to bypass the firewall and proxy if I use an ethernet connection on my laptop (luck of the draw: my room in the tent is the one with all the networking gear ), and was hoping I could use this Connectify or VirtualRouter business to then extend that internet offering to my N1. So far, no luck. Maybe I'll fight with it some more tonight and get somewhere with it.
Off-topic: How's Padova this time of year? I spent about three months up in Aviano back at the end of last summer and fall... absolutely gorgeous country.
Maybe is useful for you to knwo ho I'm able to surf web using browser on my N1 (using win7).
3 modes:
- ad-hoc network (pc-to-n1) directly from network control center of win7
- connectify (using a virtual access point)
- virtual router (same as connectify)
@ home: LAN without filters or restrictions. I'm able to surf web, use youtube player, market etc.
@ work: LAN with filters and restrictions. I'm able to surf web only.
These are my tests. I hope you will have more luck than me.
OT: Padova is great in this period. Weather is hot (25-28°), summer is starting. Unfortunatly in these days we have some rain but our "sunny season" is already started.
I know Aviano, there's a US militay base. Are you a soldier? I'm a fan of the "soldiers world" (I played for a long time a free online game called "America's Army" )
Sorry for OT

Thanks for the info
And no, I'm not a soldier, but I work as a civilian geek/technician/engineer for a US defense contractor that builds air/battlespace control systems - like a glorified Air Traffic Control. I get sent for a few months at a time to different locations that we have our systems to support the soldiers and airmen who use them.
Needless to say, Aviano has been the best assignment yet

If you can use everything @home this isn't a fault of your setup. everything gets blocked by the proxy server. if you really want it you have to talk with the administrator, i really doubt that he will do changes to please you.
for now i think it's impossible to use them.
ok... thanks for the bad news...

I have the same problem (ok, with a Desire). No IP obtained. OS is Win7/64 too.
Did you have any success in the meantime?
I think the market actually uses https:// ... is that set up as well? Even if it is, the phone might reject it because of redirecting certificate issues...
You're probably better off setting up a VPN on your home machine, or some server outside the network. Then VPN to that on your phone for open access (Of course u can buy vpn accounts from various companies too.)
What kind of proxy is it? Socks? http? remember most don't support UDP, and may only support port http or https.
How do you get N1 to see ad-hoc wifi? I tried but wasn't able to using stock froyo...
Heeeeeeeeeelp please!!!
i have installed connectify and the virtual router on my win7 laptop.
i can connect to the new wireless networks created by these softwares but I can't browse the web (no data is received in my Nexus one)
