USB writer that can write bootable uSDs - Nook Color Accessories

OK, so I've tried both my notebook's builting 5-in-1 card reader/writer and a generic USB uSD reader/writer of which neither seem to be able to properly create bootable uSDs for the NC. (or at least w/class 4 4GB PNY uSDs and a generic 128MB OLD uSD)
So, I'm wondering if some kind people who have managed to create them using a USB writer could tell me the chipset/brand of that/those writers? Preferably ones that might be available from a local b&m retailer(e.g. Wallymart, Target, RatShack, WorstBuy, etc.) as I'd REALLY like to get a bootable froyo SD going...
[EDIT]
my USB reader is:
Code:
idVendor 0x058f Alcor Micro Corp.
idProduct 0x6335 SD/MMC Card Reader
[/EDIT]

I used a Maxell micro-sd to sd adapter and a sandisk usb adapter. Both came with cards.

$2 on Amazon now
Did you try different apps to write the image to the card? I've read that some utilities are causing issues for people.

Thanks.
well, the first time that I tried it the autonooter page on nookdevs just mentioned not trying to use the nook(or other device) to attempt to write the image. Yesterday I tried writing the froyo .6.8 image to a new 4GB uSD and came up with an unbootable disk, but the nook AND notebook were able to see the various partitions(NC complained, nb mounted them). i.e. NC wouldn't boot from it...
So, I went back to check the autonooter page on nookdevs to see if any other ideas had popped up and noted that the warning message now suggested that many readers were NOT able to PROPERLY create the partitions on uSDs and only some(unspecified) USB readers would likely work(i.e. go buy a bunch until one works maybe), so I tried my current USB writer(freaking took 1h 20m!) and same thing as what happened with my builtin reader on the nb. No boot.
I check with gparted and the card image written with the internal reader still was showing as a FAT32 3.69GB partition(!) even though the nb was mounting 4 partitions... The card made with the USB reader was showing an "unknown" 3.69GB partition but was also mounting all the partitions... apparently something screwy about getting the partitions properly created on uSDs and certain readers(probably the reader chipset related).
So the above was why I was interested in particular brands/models that worked.
Software: just using dd on Ubuntu 10.04. It's known. It works, and it would be pretty much bug free by now. (I actually use it a fair amount and never had a problem before so I'm certain that it's not dd at fault, but the readers.)
[EDIT]
ROFLMAO!! This is HILARIOUS:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/SanDisk...11&skuId=8917531&st=usb card reader&cp=1&lp=8
$20 for a $2 card reader wtf?! (hence worstbuy)
hmmm... my USB reader either came with my CycloDS card or my Supercard DS 1... don't remember which now... but I suspect that it may be old enough that it has problems with SDHC cards possibly... maybe also the chipset isn't really capable of partitioning as I surmised above...
[/EDIT]
[EDIT2]
Picked up this one from RS:
Code:
idVendor 0x1976 Chipsbrand Microelectronics (HK) Co., Ltd.
idProduct 0x1307
Same deal as my nb's internal reader and my other USB reader... no boot...
...it's driving me nuts now... have to try it under windows... this USB write was MUCH quicker than the other abot 3x the xfer rate...
[/EDIT2]
[EDIT3]
Just for completeness this:
Code:
01:04.3 Mass storage controller: O2 Micro, Inc. Integrated MS/xD Controller (rev 01)
is the integrated card reader...
[/EDIT3]

Double post, but days between and an update: (reboot to 32b Vista)
Oddly enough using the builtin O2 Micro reader and windisk32imager (or whatever it's called) worked, although I did run into problem with the app in subsequent image write attempts ending up in a "Not Responding" state before completing the write and not recovering...
Which leads to oddly enough that GorillaPimp was correct about checking sw. Ubuntu managed to bork dd of all things, or possibly at least for the 64b version. (Next plan to try adding various sizing options to dd just to check if defaults/detection are messed up seeing as I have no error from dd or the write process. Next will be to build a new copy of dd from the repos...)
(I'm sure that the win32diskimage thing is just a Qt wrapper around dd for windows...)

Assuming you are under Windows, not sure about Linux. For some reason, the uSD to SD card adapters do not seem to work well. I don't know if this is by design or something with the Windows drivers. The uSD to USB do seem to work well. I have both the one shown and this one and both work file.

Yep, I know even though they SHOULD be a straight pass through and work as well as a specific for uSD reader.
I've got two of those now, one must be USB 1.1 even though it claims the hispeed 2.0 logo, while the second actually seems to be 2.0 just unable to achieve max throughput... My builtin reader is the fastest by far and I got it to successfully write the image one time, but hung two other times but my point was just to check the hw as the nookdevs page claims that some adapter are unable to properly create partitions which is what initially appeared to be happening under Ubuntu 10.04 x86-64.
So, since hw work -> sw somewhere is screwing up image writes under Ubuntu which I'd prefer to use as it's just plainly more flexible... worry about what's going on in Vista later as I don't use it much for anything other than games and a few apps that just plainly work better in an actual windows environment(v. wine).

My computer has an O2 reader built in that works just fine for writing bootable uSDs.
Amazon has cheap class 6+ Transcend cards, which has been just about the best brand I've ever used. Also try WinImage, I have a lot better luck with that.

Here is the one I use. Works great and is cheap. You need an SD to uSD adapter though.
USB Reader/Writer

I used a generic uSD to USB2.0 adapter I got from Meritline for something like .50 shipped. I get 10MB/s both r/w on my Patriot 16gb class 4 card and it has made both that and another generic brand uSD class 2 4gb card I bought on DealExtreme a few years ago into functional boot drives. I can't find the exact one, but it looks like the linked one here...

That's what I have, and it works fine on the few things I've tried with it.

I have this multi reader/writer and it works great in Win7 (x64) and Ubuntu 10
$1.97 shipped, usually arrives in 2-3 weeks.
Both microsd and sdhc ports are present.
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/usb-2-...-ms-card-reader-16gb-max-color-assorted-25113

Works like a champ. Cheap, fits in most Micro SD plastic cases along with the card. Never leave home without it.
$4.23 Shipped from B&H

I've been able to write fine with all my built-in SD readers (all 3 of my laptops worked fine).
I did have to run the disk imager as administrator for my 2 laptops with windows 7

I can write an image to the cards with the slot in my laptop. I cannot, however, use EASEUS to read or manage the card (ie resize the last partition) with that slot. I have to use an external USB card reader.

Sandisk MicroSD Adaptor Problems

Hi,
I recently bought a SanDisk 4 Gig microSD. My former phone (a Hermes with WM 6.0) was able to read the card and show its capacity correctly.
However, when i insert the card into its SD adaptor to use on my desktop or laptop computer, both systems were not able to detect the card.
What should be the problem: is it the microSD, adaptor or my computer systems ?
thanks in advance..
MN
There is a problem reading some SD memory cards in Windows XP and in Vista - are you running Vista or XP or.......?

MSKB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921413/en-us gives more information for XP users.
Hopefully one of those will help you
Cheers,
Mark.
It's probably your SD reader; it needs different firmware to read SDHC. When you bought your SanDisk, you should have gotten a USB-based reader that has the right firmware. Use it -- it will work.
actually, it didn't come with a card reader...it came with an adaptor: should there be a separate driver for the adaptor too? here is the URL of the product:
http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Micro...6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1191048055&sr=8-7
Definetely problem with the reader. MicroSDHC needs a special reader that usually come with the card.
I bought SanDisk 4GB and I got the reader for free. It works fine with my XP (and fast).
if your in the us there is a great compactthumb drive styled reader at compusa fo 10 bucks. iforget the brand but its a major brand. works fantastic. i got it for the same issue you have
Is it the Iogear brand

Cannot Read 8gb micro sdhc card on pc

hi folks
this is my first post and any help would be appreciated...
i have a mda vario 3 and am trying to install software on the sdhc card 8gb by sandisak.
my computer sees this as an external drive but still says insert disk in drive d? some colleagfues say the pc cannot read that size of the card and requires a bios update????? any ideas what they are talking about and how i fix this problem
Thanks in advance
Hi tubzy,
I'm new to this topic, but I think you'll need a SDHC compatible card reader.
In the linked thread is a solution I think.

Bye
EDA-One
no solution still
hi eda-one
sorry this still is no soluton - i do hae the latest sandisk with the card reader and once all this gear is connected to the pc it says...please insert a disk in drive f??
even though the disk is in the usb card reader
did you try format it?
If you have used the card on an 'oldish' PC without the latest BIOS or Windows updates installed it may not be SDHC compatible even using a card reader.
You can also get a situation where formatting using the standard Windows formatter or even just writing files to it from your PC will corrupt its filing system.
There are various utilities available on SD manfacturers sites for formatting and recovery.
Check out the 'Formatting and Read/Write check util in the OEM section here and download the latest drivers for your reader whilst there.
http://sandisk.com/Retail/DriverDownloads.aspx
Hope this helps.
Hi and thank you
HI
Even after trying this it still doe s not work,
I have downloaded the utility and attempted to run it but it says no usb found even though it can vonnect to a usb pen drive?? any ideas ??
thank you
I had that same problem when I first got my 4 Gb SDHC card and it was because I didn't connect the card reader directly to a USB port, instead I was using an external USB port. When I put it in to an onboard one, even though all of mine are on the back of my computer, it started working.
8gb card
Hi and thanks for your response.
i am sorry but can you please clarify what you mean to be onboard usb port. Is this the sockets where you normally connect any usb device eg a mouse to a computer or do you mean i have to take the computer apart and do it a motherboard level?
I am not very technical and apologise in advance if it sounds a silly question.
I bought the damn thing and was hoping it would and should work from out of the cardboard package. I can see this on the my computer as an external drive but when clcikcing on it it says insert disk
if the disk was faulty it would not work on the phone but on the phone it says 7.5 gb available and have stored some data there. So i think it it is a case of the pc not being able to read the card and from there i dont know what the problem is.
Any further light on this subject would really be appreciated

You have it right about what I meant. I did mean the sockets where you connect any USB device. You don't need to take your computer apart or anything. If that's what you are already doing then it's possible that the reader that you got with the card may just be faulty.
Not knowing what adapter you are using is a problem. I had similar problems with my first SDHC card and finally went to a local office supply store (Staples) and bought a "Sandisk MobileMate+ USB Memory Card Reader" for $15. It is a memory stick sized device and it accepts the SDHC MicroSD cards directly in it's slot. This works great on any PC so far.
It just may be the reader.
thanks!
This is a nightmare on elm street scenario.
I have finally tracked it to a faulty card reader, so i purchased another one. This one works and we have another problem - cannot copy data file path is too deep???????????
I am openeing another thread for that
Thanks to every1 for trying various solutions
I'm guessing you got a bad card..which is going to happen a lot with these high-cap cards, at least for a while. I am assuming you are using the small, plastic USB reader that came with the 8 gb card....that plugs directly into a USB socket? If not...I can tell you right now..the "older" adapters will NOT work with 4/6/8 gb cards. By this, i mean the adapter/reader that usually comes with the cards in the package. Also, it may sound silly..but make SURE you didnt, or are not, forcing the card into the phone/reader backwards...i know it's silly, but it's damn easy to do..and it usually trashes the card. My 8 gb just got in tonight...and it's working like a champ. I'm guessing you got a bad card. best of luck.
This is crazy. My phone reads the card just fine, but the card readers I have do not work period. 8G SDHC

file transfering qustion

newbie here, i have a 1GB microSD card and i recently purchase a 4GB microSD card. could anyone please show me how to transfer the whole content of the 1GB to the 4GB. thank you very much in advance
Through the PC. I believe your fastest option is MicroSD to USB converter, if you have one. If not - transfer it all via Activesync (will be a bit slower). To and then from a directory on your PC. Make sure to keep everything in the exact same structure (directory tree and such) or your programs will not work.
Perhaps someone knows of a better way, but it's how I just did it last week when I upgraded.
That's exactly what I was going to suggest, using a card reader on the PC. It's worked on every WM phone I've owned and never caused issue.

Very Slow USB transfer speeds from computer to Nexus One

I am so annoyed right now because I can't figure this out.
I am running cyan 5.0.6 on handset and windows 7x64 on my pc.
I mount the phone using a usb cable and then try to drag over a few gig worth of data. The fastest it will transfer is about 1.6 MB/s.
I am assuming this is not normal as it should be using usb 2.0 speeds.
Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it? How can I tell if the appropriate USB 2.0 drivers are installed and working on the PC?
Any help would be super appreciated.
Try a dif USB port, Dif cable, or dif computer.
I have tried different port, different cable, and different computer. But the other computer is running win 7x64 as well.
Is there a setting or driver I might be missing?
I should add that I can transfer the same files to a cheapo Verbatim usb stick using the same port and computers at around 5 MB/s.
Also, USB debugging mode is off.
Maybe the drivers for the USB mass storage device didnt install correctly. Connect your N1 to the computer, Go to Device manager, under Universal Serial Bus controllers, right click and uninstall the USB mass Storage Device. Disconnect your n1 and reconnect it. It should reinstall the drivers again.

I really hope this isn't the case. @futango, I tried doing the driver thing and it didn't help. Still around 1.6 MB/s

Also on win7 x64 - That's what I consistently get, 2 MB/s
I thought it was due to the stock 4GB microSD being class 2 but my new a-data 16GB class 6 performs the same.
There is a way to increase it artificially but it's not recommended. The default volume policy for the mounted sdcard in windows (maybe just win7 x64) is to mount it for quick removal without proper eject or unmount. That means write caching is disabled. You can enable write caching at the risk of data corruption but I have noticed that it too is not that fast - I forget the exact MB/s numbers I got.
Edit: Nevermind - If the N1 is limiting the xfer to 2MB/s then changing policies doesn't do anything. Just appears faster but in the end it's really not.
cool thanks for the info guys.
I guess it just is what it is.
I will try using a card reader next time. That should work.

so it is possible to get over 2 MB/s. I wonder what is different with your settings. Are you running win 7x64?
Yes..just edited.
Dont know if I can trust my screenshot ... is there another way to meassure the speed?
I guess you could just time how long a transfer takes of a file of known size. Then you can figure out the rate that way...

Smaller files tend to transfer faster than bigger files.
Whenever I move a nightly over to my phone I can peg out at 3.8 MB or so. If I move a 300 MB file it will run the whole thing at about 2.2MB
I am using N1, PC is XP32, the USB speed I am getting is around 1.6MB/s. SD card is a SDHC Class4... I think the bottleneck is between PC and the phone.
Hmmm....I know this doesn't NECESSARILY address your problem, but have you tried something like this to see if you can get different speeds? http://global.mobileaction.com/download/android.jsp
For the OtA data transfer, is there an ftp client and/or server for the Nexus One?
We may get better transfer rate. I have a 32Gb flash card that I plan to fill with MP3s. And based on the USB speed... It will take me weeks to fill my card!

Transfer files to a thumb drive???

Quick question on the Color Nook. I'm a field tech and want to start carrying my service manuals and firmware for the copiers. I plan on loading everything onto a 16gb micro sd card and read the PDFs from that.
Now my biggest thing is it possible to take files from the Nook and load them directly onto a USB thumb drive? Our machines take thumb drives to load firmware and all we do is move the files over to the drive.

There are thumb drives which actually use a MicroSD.. Although apparently not that easy to find, I didn't have a lot of luck in a few minutes of googling.
The Kingston FCR-MRG2 is one, but I couldn't verify if it behaved just like a thumb drive (ie: bootable etc.. if that's necessary?).
Any MicroSD card USB reader should work, I would think. I have one of these, as it's the smallest I could find: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0R84DH47SVBVJ7KHBYPQ

The card actually loads into the connector-side of the reader!
I got the impression that he meant that he wanted to attach a usb drive to the micro usb port and use the NC to move the files to the usb drive.
Now just moving a firmware file to the sdcard root and using a micro usb reader could be the same result.
On a side note, does anyone know if the usb port on the NC is capable of being a host?
RoboRay, that is nice. It would work but require putting the firmware files on the 8gb of the Nook so I can have my card slot free. I have about 12gb of manuals and files that will fit on a 16gb chip.
Yeah, it's not an ideal solution because you'd have to load whatever files you need onto the SD card then eject it to put it into the card reader. I don't believe that the NC's USB port is able to operate as a host device, so that's probably the best you're going to be able to do.

I actually have something similar that came with a 7" Viore tv...You plug your standard thumb drive in the adapter, then the other end into the unit..Works fine on the tv...No idea if it works on the Nook.
Well, at that price, you really don't have much to lose by ordering one to give it a try.

Can you just plug the Nook directly into the PC via USB and pull the files off the SD that way?
