Which tybe of roms you most prefer to use ..
- Builds depend on ext2 build (which need installation)
- Builds depend on Data.img (which you can dirctly run by haret.exe)
I have 3 micro SD cards. I've been wasting the most part of this week trying out different roms, all to find out they all have their own problems!
I I don't mind the ext2 builds, but I would really wish that there was some sort of way to have multiple builds on 1 SD card (I gather you can't do that with the ext2 builds).
I'm also a bit sick of having to reinstall again and again and again when i find that it keeps freezing.
So... to answer your question... give me a build that 1) is stable 2) is fast
If possible, a build that can co-exist with another build.
ext2
Builds depend on (ext2) is the best because you can make how large you want!
I prefer ext2 builds because those are supposed to be faster.
Also what I want to see in builds is:
- Good battery life (with data on, wifi and GPS off since these are true battery hogs)
- Stability. No SODs, No hardware keys failure
- Smooth
- Internet apps working (market, facebook, etc)
I do not care much for a working camera as I never really use it in WinMo either, but there are quite some apps that require the camera I am willing to try For this to work I will have a lot of patience though. Needs a kernel revision anyway

There is a way to put multiple ext2 builds on one card, but it requires a deep knowledge of Linux, which, frankly, I do not have. But there is some information, either here or on neopeek.com
ext2 builds definately

my G1 is working flawlessly with all the nifty features like apps2sd and compcache enabled. I showed my room mate some of the cool stuff you guys have been working your arses off for and he wanted me to put it on his.
Here's the issue. His SD card reader seems to be dying. We've tried multiple cards to see if it was a cheap card issue or what not. His cards just don't read half the time. We were wondering if it were at all possible to use either the latest cyan mod or something of the like WITHOUT apps2sd and compcache. A simple way to avoid setting up apps2sd would be wonderful.
you could just get rid of the apps2sd partition on the card and the app2sd wont be enabled

That sucks.. (kinda seems pointless to do anything then.)
As he said above. Some rom's will run without a ext partition. CM'S rom's work without a ext partition.
I think all the Hero rom's require three partitions because just the rom it self is huge and will get a low memory warning.
Looks like fat32 for him.
awesome, thanks
Hey folks
I really like to play emolators like FPSCE or others on my xperia x1. But my Problem is, if I use a good Rom with HTC-stuff the device is getting slowly. Isn´t it possible to get two Roms on your Device, one Rom full Rom with all Programs an one very very lite Rom, the full one for the daily use and the lite one if you want to play Games.
I mean if it´s possible to bring Android with the bootloader Haret on the xperia, a second Windows mobile shouldn´t be such a problem

Actually, having two roms in the system will be even slower no matter how lite is the rom. Rom uses the ROM space in the device, the lack of it will also slow down the system, same goes to the ram. Its like a desktop need Hdd space and ram to move fast. No Hdd you also cannot process the files fast. Pls correct me if I'm wrong.

Well you're partly right. RAM is the fastest memory in computer/mobile-smartphone, beside processor's cashe. But ROM is just memory, just like HHD in computer, then you can extend it with SD card wich (as I know) is slower than ROM. So the system will not run slower if the ROM is more used unless if you install programs and other things on slower micro SD card. The thing which slows down the system is overloaded RAM, so basicly more RAM - better performance. Speed also depends on other hardware such as procesor, chipset, graphic accelator.....
This means that 2 OS-es installed on the phone should NOT slow it down, unless the ROM is full and need you install every thing on SD or it affect RAM.
This is only true if I'm right that SD is slower than ROM ( I really don't know the ROMs read-write speed, ofcourse there are also different memory cards with different speeds).
Correct me if I'm wrong.
The number of OS-es for our "little friend" (i'm talking about a ppc ) keeps growing, many versions of windows mobile including the soon to be released 7, android and symbian.
I was wondering if it's possible to have just a boot loader with basic drivers that will allow users to have different roms in storage card and just continue booting the rom from there.
I'm a web application developer working with actionscript 3 and some java for serverside so I don't know a lot about mobile hardware architecture and but I was wondering if anyone with a lot more knowledge into the field can enlighten me and anyone else interested about that possibility.
Thanks in advance for any bit of information.
Romeo.
There is a bootloader that lets you pick between wm and android but its not a bootloader in the traditional sense, just an application that runs when wm boots that gives you the option of staying in wm or running haret to boot into android.
AFAIK, theres no way to switch ROMs or versions of WM without a reflash.
Wouldnt be a bad idea though, as you could have a stable 6.1 ROM on one hand as a backup and could still play around with a less stable 6.5.5 rom with the latest packages, manila etc.
not to mention, that booting a ROM from MMC will result in crap performance (just look at android, i mean max respect for all the hard work/coding done, it's a structural limitation issue) because of the slower transfer speed.
imho the whole phone os idea should be handled more like a desktop pc. you know, bios, OS install, partitions, etc. ofc adapted for a mobile phone. instead of these "closed" proprietary bootloaders.
this whole rom thingy doesnt really seem logical to me. the concept itself of WM "build" is stupid and pretty uncomfortable. an updatable os would make all things easier. for us geeks atleast.
hopefully it will happen
Thanks guys for supporting the idea If it's not possible at this stage maybe letting the right people know that we want that will make a change.
@ASK768 Yeah i knew about the "boot loader" for android ... actually i'm not even sure if android has full control over the phone while running with haret or some part of windows mobile is underneath. Is android running on top of some windows drivers or something?
I was not really able to run android due to some "formatting for video performance" of my SD Card (haven't really noticed any change and did not benchmark also i hope i'll find the time one day) ... well it least that's what i think the problem is.
@crashDebug i think the most important parts of the rom are loaded into memory so it might just increase boot time. I'm running most of my application from Storage Card and i did not really see any difference in performance. I might be wrong about it's just what i noticed from experimenting without any real benchmark.
I completely agree with phones being as desktop PC's and i really hope we'll be there soon but i still hope something can be done with the blackstone
i wouldnt count on it and with the rumors about winmo7 well things aint goin in the right direction ifear
This is pertaining to the Mem card not being read in Froyo.
Me and many others have this problem from quite some time...but no1 seems to know the solution.
So this is my desperate appeal to all the devs and the bright minds working for this brilliant purpose of porting Droid to X1...
The actual problem: Whenever I click gallery or music, it tells me: 'Memory card unmounted or not inserted'
The irony is that Droid is running FROM the mem card. So obviously the mem card is very much in place.
Now if some1 can just spare a little time and findout why this happens.
I have myself tried two diff cards AND formatted my own atleast 4 times. The problem seems to persist.
So, any1, with any suggestion, help or idea is welcome to post it here.
And once again, I apologize to make a new thread about this topic if you think its wrong because I don't think so.
fair call circleofomega, it's an issue but from what I've observed here in my very short time is that hardware support is the critical concern and software - media not working - is at this stage a distant priority.
I'll try to reproduce this on my 2.01 glossy. I know that ringtones, alerts, etc. work and those are loading off the sdcard.
I have been following other android threads, and Tremere's 2.2 is going very fast, I hope soon it will be fixed.
and for me, I can't really use it without wi-fi, as I sync my contacts, emails, etc. so am just waiting as well
it's pretty obvious that this time they'll succeed, the build is amazing, fast n stable, i hope your problem will be fixed soon.

Thanx visser..I really want to make it my primary OS, but if basic problems like this one persists, its difficult and almost impossible to use it on a daily basis...but nonetheless, I hope devs dont over look this and solve it...

From your point of view this is true. But from Droid's point of view D) he thinks that 'memory card' is his primary phone internal memory and that there is no secondary memory (memory card).
@circleofomega
if you really want it to work you need to provide a situation where the devs themselves can reproduce the error on their devices otherwise you happen to be a one off situation
a bug that cannot be reproduced is likely not a problem with android/kernel itself but your hardware.
so if you want it fixed help the devs help you

This i am ready to do...but how and only if Devs take some interest in it...I have already PMed some of the Devs attracting no replies...i have already given/written my situation to them with full details..what else am i supposed to do...
And +, i wud never wish that the devs or any1 else face this problem...but if only some1 can do something about it...even the G1 users have the same issue...
And as i have mentioned, i have already tried a friend's card..ITS THE SAME ISSUE....
So..Now its really upto the Devs or any other bright mind to help me out of this godforsaken madness...
So can you give some information on the cards, manufacturer, speed rating, size, etc etc ?
There might be something there.
And which version of the X1 do you have ?

yea..there is this OI manager that reads my card flawlessly..its only in the Gallery and Music application that the system says NO mem card...
OK, that means nothing is wrong with your card or kernel and it's gallery/music player fault.
Probably very stupid question, but: Do you have any pictures or music on your card?
The problem is that Android's mount service crashes on startup for no apparent reason, as illustrated in a log Oggy972 sent me:
Code:
E/MountService( 214): Error processing initial volume state
E/MountService( 214): java.lang.Exception: Unexpected state 2
E/MountService( 214): at com.android.server.MountService$2.run(MountService.java:447)
W/MountService( 214): Duplicate state transition (removed -> removed)
Why it thinks you removed the card you are booting from is beyond me..

Ok so I have my Nook Color and I have my shiney new class 4 sd card.
I have managed to install Honeycomb on said SD card. I even manged to get ADB setup and installed the marketplace and what not.
What I do not have is left over space on the card. I did use the image from this link:
***.addictivetips.com/mobile/install-android-3-0-honeycomb-and-market-on-nook-color/
[EDIT: Nice spam filter. Try this.]
Since the image is 4GB in size, I was under the impression I would have roughly 12GB free on my SD card. I do not. If I go to Settings > Storage it shows the SD card as having a total size of 1.25GB and 1.14GB free. It also shows the internal storage as having a total size of 656MB and 555MB free space.
Ok I could have sworn the EMMC (or internal storage) was 5GB and add in my 16GB of SD should give me 21GB of space +/- space of the OS and apps.
So where the frell is my 12GB of space at?
Also when I plug the nook into my PC running Windows 7 64-Bit I get 3 removable drives that are greyed out and unusable. Loverly. The heck? At the very least the internal EMMC should be showing up.
Notes:
Yes I did install the USB driver
From what I understand this version of HC is not rooted but like your intro video says, I am a newb so what the frell do I know?
What I want:
To be able to plug my NC into the PC and have access to the EMMC (where a lot of my files are now) and access to remaining 12GB or so of space on the NC itself.
History of me and the NC:
I have previously installed CM7 on a different SD card and it was alright. I didn't like it because I couldnt move icons around on the desktop in an intuitive manner. (i.e., grab and drop) and it felt too much like a hacked up phone OS instead of pure android. I want pure android on my NC.
I did my research before I purchased the NC and IMO, it is the best value for the $$$ in terms of an Android tablet. I don't mind putting in some hours in front of the command line (I started working with computers when DOS 5 was released, so lets compare the color of our beards, eh?) and am totally comfortable in various OS's and speak *NIX fluently.
Got an answer that you think is gonna work? Or should I just wait for someone else to post a different Honeycomb image for the NC, or is there one out there that simply works?
Over the last few months I have spent many hours reading these and various other forums (B&N Forums, Android Forums) to get ready to hack my Nook and I would love to contribute in some small (or not so small) manner however being married with 2 kids working 50+ hours a week puts a damper on my "fun time" (i.e. hackery).
Thanks in advance for not only reading all this, but for any help / support that is offered.
D'Oh!
Shoulda watched the video twice. Posted in wrong sub-forum.
Shoulda been in the Q&A area.
Crap.
Maybe there is a mod out there willing to move it.
Think I may have found whats up.
I pulled the SD card and stuck it back in my laptop to take a look-see at the partitions. Lo and behold there is a 12.5GB un-partitioned space.
So now I am going to create a new partition and then stick it in the nook and boot from it. Hopefully once I hook it up to USB, it will be able to mount as volume for file transfer. It would suck to have to poweroff the nook and pull the card every time I wanted to add some files to it.
No luck. Windows will not recognize the partition I created.
I.e., I am unable to assign a drive letter even though it is a logical partition.
Off to google stuff again.
Well I gave up on this.
However I am willing to admit when I am wrong. I am now quitw happily running the latest stable build of CM7 and its running nicely. Got a few more tweaks to do before I arrive at what I had pictured in my head for my ultimate nook.
I just wanted to report in and give a status update although I am kinda puzzled by the lack of responses. Are the majority of you running froyo and waiting for a better version of honeycomb to be released?
Anyway cheers and happy hacking.
Most of us are (I think) running CM7 (gingerbread). When the HC sources are released, I expect we'll be running CM8 within weeks.
Windoze has real troubles with partitioned SDs, especially in built-in readers, either a case of "we know better" or one of those simplifying assumptions that gets in the way. An external reader (looks more like a generic USB drive) might fare better. I'm a Linux guy, so I'm all set. Most Windoze systems don't have drivers for ext filesystems, so they're unusable (/system and /data).
Image-copying always sets the partitions and filesystems until you re-partition like you did. Good detective work there.
Also, lots of us have lives and aren't in this forum full-time. I tend to ignore HC posts when I don't have infinite time to mess around.

Delete the partition you created... extend the last partition on the SD... the nook can now use all of it when running off SD and the remaining portion of partition 1 when booting stock.
So come to find out that the main holdup woith getting honeycomb going for the nc community is a lack of source code. Until such time as that is made available I can wait.
Now then, here is where I will eat my own hat. I reloaded the latest stable version of CM7 on my nc and I am really impressed with it. Last time I tried it woas a few months ago and it was a dissapointment for me. However between then and now I have learned a lot more about Android in general and the nook. This is my first android device.
FWIW Linux is my mainOS and has been for years. I was in windows so I could satisfy a craving of mine. You see, I am a WoW player. While the game runs ok in Wine, it runs far far better natively, especially for raiding. So I use linux for work and most other functions, i use windows for games.
So anyway I am now very comfortable in my CM7 setup and will continue to work witu it and learn more as time goes by.
