I have a rooted Sprint Hero running 2.1. I rooted following a guide here using universal androot and superuser. My goal was to get control over my LEDs and remove bloatware. Which2.2 ROM should I use to install the PlayOn app? I am not sure if one ROM is better than another for my intended use. I primarily use my phone for calling, BT audio/phone, ereader, surfing/email. If doable, I'd like to overclock the processor. I am asuuming the Hero will struggle with some of the media PlayOn will present it with. Thanks.

PlayOn requires flash, thus the android 2.2 requirement. Flash isnt available for the Hero.

Just powered up my N1 for the first time.. And well, have a few questions..
I came from a rooted G1 and was use to multi touch. So, uh... where is it on the N1?
How do I go about enabling multi touch support on the N1?
ummm the nexus comes with multi touch out of the box. perhaps you should open up the web browser, or maps, and actually try it? unless you bought an old nexus where the OS has not been updated to the latest, you should update it first.

There are a TON of threads you will want to read first.
Determine if you want to root, if you do, which ROM do you want?
Do you want for the OTA 2.2 update, or get a custom 2.2 ROM?
Is multitouch the only feature you are concerned with?
without ROMing this phone is the Motorola Droid straight Android?
They dont put there own software on it at all? No Motorola Crapware what-so-ever.
sorry for the nooby question
Aside from a few minor things like motonav and the portal, it's bare. There is no motoblur or large hogs.

The milestone has lots of motorola made software. Homescreen, gallery, car dock etc are all milestone. And you are right to call it crapware. The stock 2.1 stuff is much better. Luckily, its no problem to install replacements manually.
Oh, and the bootloader is locked on the milestone, so no custom ROMs. Ah well. still a great phone. Though no thanks to motorola developers.
Since you mention the Droid, I assume you're in the US. Fortunately, the Droid has even less Moto-branded crapware than the Milestone. You won't get Motonav (you get stock Google Navigation instead), the Phone Portal, or any of the Milestone replacement apps (gallery, music player)—all of this stuff is stock Android on the Droid.
Basically the only uninstallable preloaded crap is Car Home (which is actually much better in 2.2), the Amazon MP3 Store, and Verizon Visual Voicemail. Like the others said, no Motoblur or anything like that.
The Droid also has an unlocked bootloader, so you CAN do custom ROMs with it. Sorry to you Milestone users

However, those programs can be removed by rooting your device and using Root explorer, Terminal Emulator, or the Android SDK kit (make sure to make backups before you try to remove any of them though). Rooting it is easy, providing you do the research and such.

Very true, and actually about 90% of the reason I decided to root in the first place
Someone is giving me a HTC Incredible as a gift. Looks like I'll be dropping the Droid. I hope to have better memory performance and smoother scrolling (touch interaction). Any opinions on the matter?

I had a Droid, now I have an INC. Your assumptions are correct sir.
Have you tried overclocking and 2.2 on the Droid? I suppose since it's already done.. but the general kind of lack of fluidity was starting to erk me on the stock 2.1.. went ahead and rooted, put 2.2 on, overclocked to 1ghz (which to my touch, it seems to actually be cooler and lasting longer) and my god what a difference, it's like getting a new phone to be honest.
Yea, I am rooted on 2.2. It is like a new phone. If you have seen the touch screen test between iphone and several other phones you'll see the droid has a rough touch screen. I am also still having memory issues. But it is a lot better and faster

First off you have to be rooted just google it. theres a nice youtube video but i cant post links so then after you are rooted download an app called Rom Manger its free after that you can download different roms but right now Bugless beast has the most stable up to date froyo so download his rom and its will auto flash it for you then your done
ok thanks, i'll try that...
I'm already rooted.
Ok, so I just got a Thunderbolt and I gave my old Droid1 to my girlfriend. I'm thinking of rooting it for her so that I can speed it up...she complains that it lags.
Fair warning, I rooted my nook color but haven't rooted an Android phone yet. I've seen some videos and it seems pretty easy to root the OG Droid.
If I do root it for her, does a rooted phone need a lot of maintenance? Or can I set her up with a basic, but FAST, rom and she should be good to go for a while without needing to update anything or back anything up?
Also, can you guys recommend some real fast, but mostly stock, non-techie, etc roms?
Thanks in advance.

Always put your phone model at title/subject as this is a general forum for the droid/milestone.
People may help you faster!!

Sorry, I figured since this was the Motorola Droid forum that it was implied.

So...anyone wanna help?
For a Motorola Milestone atleast, Rooting does not cause any extra maintainence
and rather than installing a new custom ROM, you can just Overclock it.
For my Milestone when i was Running eclair this is what I did.
1> Install Universal Androot
2> Install SetCPU
3> Install Milestone Overclock.
It's pretty simple to do.
I'd OCed my procc to 1200 GHz.
i presume from reading from your post that you have a droid.
I'm not familiar with that phone, but since it does not have a locked Bootloader, installing a custom ROM shouldn't be an issue.
I'm currently running CM7 [with the Froyo Kernel] on my phone.
Battery life is GREAT & its much snappier than a stock Milestone running Froyo.
Check this out.

I've never installed a custom ROM on any phone other than my Milestone, but i've been lead to believe ROM Manager should do the trick if you've got an unlocked Bootloader.
You should wait for some more knowledgeable answers though, before you go ahead.

It is actually a Droid AND Milestone forum...and the 2 are quite a bit different!
But I agree with the other poster, if you just want speed: Just root an overclock to around 900...less risk than at 1100 or 1200 and works fine 99% of Milestone/Droids.
You are almost doubling the speed.
If you want a low-maintenance ROM, look into CM6 for your Droid.
I have a friend who has a Droid. I think he said it'a a few years old, probably at least 3. It has 2.2.3 on it. He was complaining about the contacts app not having enough fields and options on it.
He actually carries some type of Pocket PC thing in addition to the phone. Older gent. What could I recommend to him as a contacts/dialer app that is good and can sync with Google?
I looked in the About section on the phone and under model, it just said Droid.
I don't know how much he is into custom roms and stuff, but I recommend to try out CM7 or any other custom rom. I've never used Froyo (2.2), but even Gingerbread (2.3) had a really decent phone/contacts app and is more widely supported by apps.

Custom ROM not a possibility.
