Whick version of Milestone do I have? - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

Hi
I bought a Milestone second hand from eBay mid way last year hoping to get froyo in September. I've now grown too impatient waiting for MotoLOLa and am going to dip my foot in the custom rom ocean.
Problem is I'm not sure which version of the Milestone I have (as in country of origin). I tried emailing the eBay seller but have had no reply.
I'm going to attempt following this thread but I'm not sure which recovery file to use. How can I tell what's the country my phone originally came from so i can get the right file?
Thanks in advance.

I which to know also why motor made these variants?

[Q] Droid 4 in Canada (Rogers?)

I need a new phone with a physical keyboard. Was looking at the Droid4, which appears to have the best physical keyboard around, but am a bit of a newb at this stuff. My old HTC Dream (G1) is dying, and I need to figure this out sooner then later. Haha
Can it be unlocked to work on Rogers Wireless in Canada?
As of right now, no.

Thnx. Is it a case of no unlock? Or (lack of knowledge here) no GSM support?
Also, once an android device is rooted, is there an unlock app of some kind? Or?

Currently GSM support is disabled in the firmware and AFAIK it will stay that way until Verizon releases an update to enable it.
Was a bit disappointing they do not have the global services available on the Droid 4. If your looking for a device with keyboard right now you may be able to pick up a used Droid 2 Global. I know those work up there as I had one when I was in Canada last year.
All I can say is, damn. I can't believe how messed up the mobile phone industry is. There is a device, I want to use it, so much so that I'm willing to pay the crazy $549.99 pricetag for it. However, they've decided that I'm not allowed to use it on my network. I hope chinese clones step up their game! Heh.
I was contemplating a droid3, however don't want to spend too much since I may want the droid4 once its actually usable.
I was contemplating picking up a motorola flipout for the meantime, cheap and weird looking!
Also, this probably isn't the right place for a question about this, but I'm at a loss as to what the heck unlock codes actually are (are they issued by the carrier? or hardware manufacturer?) and why there are numerous scammy websites selling them. Can anyone recommend a site I can do some reading about this on? About why I'll probably have to pay for one? I may need to know this if I pickup a different used phone.
The SIM Unlock codes are usually given by the carrier to their paid customers. Verizon will give them out if you have had an account in good standing for 6 months if I recall right.
As for sites to get the unlock codes, I cannot make any recommendations due to I have never paid for them. I have however seen on sites like deals extreme unlocker SIMs that go between the phone and the SIM but have no idea if or how well those work.
Also if you buy a used device you may be able to get one that has been SIM unlocked already. The SIM unlock is a one time task, even if the phone gets wiped or reset it will remain SIM unlocked.
I still keep my G1 as a spare. My next step from that was a TouchPro2 - it comes with WindowsMobile, but I'm running XDAndroid on it. It has an excellent keyboard. I think I still like the TP2 keyboard better than my D4's keyboard.
But, the TP2 has the exact same processor as the G1, and only a tiny bit more RAM. It has a much higher screen rez (800x480) but no faster hardware, so it is noticeably slow.
If I were you I'd look at picking up a used Droid3. I was considering the D3 as my next phone from the TP2, but waited instead for the D4 to come out. As it is, I'm finding that Verizon's 4G service is cutting out all the time on me, so it's still better as a 3G phone. And I'm heading off to Europe in a couple weeks, and will have to bring my G1 or my TP2 on the trip anyway.
Curses to Qualcomm, Motorola, and Verizon. Verizon for their stupid policies and selling a phone with full-featured hardware and intentionally crippled software. Motorola for their locked firmware that prevents end-users, who have legitimately paid for and *own* the damn hardware, from installing software on it as they see fit. Qualcomm for preventing end-users (again, who have legitimately paid for and *own* the hardware) from even seeing the specifications so that they can provide their own software.

Bell sells the Motorola XT860, I'm currently using it unlocked on Rogers without a hitch. The only issue, I'm not sure if this phone will get official ICS support... The devs are hacking away at getting all of the cool ICS features up and running though
You can probably find an XT860 on Kijiji, Craigslist or even eBay for a lot cheaper than the full Bell price... heck they were giving them away on 3 year contracts during xmas. You might want to check out the Droid3 forums in the meantime to get some more info on XT860
Fwiw, i'm in Ireland now and popped an Irish SIM into the phone. Interestingly enough, you can swap the SIM while the phone is powered on, in Airplane mode. It still didn't work, but the phone didn't complain about any SIM lock. But when I rebooted the phone, it complained then.
There are properties in /system/build.prop for enabling world-mode. I turned these on, but looking at the radio logcat, it seems that our current libril-xxx.so just doesn't support any GSM commands.
The interesting thing is that the Motorola Atrix has the same Qualcomm MDM6600 radio modem as this phone. I'm going to look for an Atrix ROM and see if I can kang some libril files from there to see if I can get any further. (Btw, I wrote the multimode RIL for the XDAndroid ROM; this sort of investigation is my specialty...)

And it's still not stable from what I've read...
This phone is too early to jump into for me. I'll stick to my 4G Slide for now and check back on this device in a few months. Maybe development will pick up by then and they'll have the GSM thing sorted out
Bumping this again. Any news?
I'm in the same situation as OP. Need to upgrade phone (from a Desire Z) and want something with physical keyboard. Droid 4 seems like the best bet.

The phone worked fine for me on Rogers when I had it. I did a bunch of tweaking in order to get all of the functions working, but this was back in ICS. Also, no LTE is available...
But you're much better off going full touchscreen, just get used to it... I think keyboard phones are going the way of the dinosaur

OK guys this is perfect timing.. and i dont have much support for th eextra tweaking issues we have in Canada, with some of these phones and roms..
Anyhow. Heres my story.. You will like the ending!!
Ive owned a Droid 3 (XT860-BELLMOBILITY) for over a year now.. I came from the original Milestone 1 from Telus Mobililty.
4 weeks ago I had my Droid 3 stolen from me in the laundry room of my condo.. Well it was more.. forgotten by me (i think it was lost there.. for sure!!) and some lucky sole got their hands on it.. I can now use google and its cached pages of kijiji to see that it wass posted the day of.. lol ive got the kid selling other goods so its only a matter of time before i force karma upon him
I took a risk, but being desperate QWERTYDROID junkies like we are, and bought an American Verizon Droid 3 (XT862)
--Keep in mind that i knew nothing about unlocking, rooting, restoring, and doing the whole ROM/Bootstrap/TWRP/SAFEBOOT etc.. Im 35, been into pc's since i was 15, but never into MAC or LINUX.
At this point ive bricked these phones and the next one i speak about dozens of times, while attempting to do the practice makes perfect sort of journey to see what works, what doesnt, what sometimes does, etc.. Its always ended up being able to use the original stock rom's with no problems. (sometimes bloatwear was anoying) but not much support for our radios and etc.
So i had a bit of trouble getting this verizon droid 3 up and running as verizon themselves gives us extra work by trying to secure the load up of the activation process. Either way.. it worked, and still does, and ive gotten a few roms working on it like all SteelDroid, CM10.1, MiniMoto, and possibly a couple others. but these were the ones that can and will work, with a bit of trial and error.
shoot gotta run for a few minutes. so i wanna post this so i dont lose it all.
PART 2 of this story to follow within an hour!! But ill give you a bit of a spoiler.
I am using a Droid 4 now.. as a poster said justr before me, he had many issues to get past, well so did I, but them came the huge hurdles to get over also..
Still have my droid 3 xt862 that was wanting to sell. though,, im still not for certain ready to part with it..
be back shortly sorry about this..
next part in next post

As far as I'm aware, there shouldn't be any problem getting this to run on a GSM network outside the United States. If the phone is on ICS or JB the GSM is unlocked already. If you use any of the ROM's, there's a thread in the "Droid 4 Android Development" called "Enable GSM on any ROM Patch" which should fully enable it.

Purchasing a Nexus 7 in JPN then taking back to AU

Hi Guys,
Looking for a quick answer here.
Im on holidays in Japan and can purchase the Nexus 7 (WiFi only) Tablet for a good price. I will be taking it back with me to AUS.
Will i have any issues with this tablet back in AUS with regards to updates or anything like that? Can i just install the base AUS image and have it 100% English and not just have the language in english?
My main concern is not the software on it but will i have any issues with the hardware when using back in AU or issues with slower/no software updates?
Thank you

The nexus 7 has international warranty. And I believe there is only 1 variant of Nexus 7 wifi around with some single worldwide software. Even if there is a difference in software (which I doubt), you can easily flash the fastboot images off Google's site.
I'm saying this as I bought my Nexus 7 3G from Malaysia and unlike my Galaxy Nexus which has regional variants which prevents OTA, on the N7 I'm running 4.2.2 which I received via ota.
A valid concern would be the charger adapter, it probably won't plug in Australian power outlets. But you can buy that easily once you're home.

I will check out those images from Google as itd like to make it the same as my country.

Just to let you know I did the same thing myself in January! Where'd you end up getting yours from? I went Bic Camera. That's also good news about the international warranty. I was willing to risk it at the time but shouldn't need to worry now.
I'm also using the charger that came with it. You just need a JPN to AUS adapter. You can pick those up for something like 160 yen if memory serves me correctly.
Yup Bic Camera. Pretty cheap compared to where i could find it back in AU.
International Warranty is a good thing too.
Only issue i had was it didn't software update past 4.2 to either 4.2.1 or 4.2.2. So i manually upgraded it to 4.2.2 yesterday and its all sweet. Hope the OTA will work for next release that Google puts out.
Yeah got an adapter, but what was better is i saw a 4 port adapter for charging 4 usb devices off the one power point. So got one of those with a converter. works well.

Need advice about replacement

Hi guys,
I know your not lawyers on here but I need some advice. My phone has the gap issues but they are quite big. Phones4U claim that there is no stock in the UK and so they cannot replace my phone. If it gets to after the period of replacement, what can I do?

[Q] Sprint spelled wrong on dropdown and lockscreen! "print"

Hey guys, just got my HTC ONE yesterday from best buy, loving the phone, just some random issue I have... I've been searching the web and figured atleast one other person should have the same issue as me... but maybe not haha!
I cant for the life of me remember what its called, but the pulldown notification bar, should have your carriers name on it, mine is Sprint, but the pull down says "print" . it is also misspelled when on a phone call, print is top left corner, and also on the lock screen top middle....
anyone have any suggestions? I brought it in to best buy, and as I predicted, the guy only watched a 20 min video on the phone and he has no idea...
also, im thinking about rooting it, as i did with my EVO 4G i traded in yesterday. and i know rooting it would give me access to changing it, flashing a new rom, but im a little hesitant to root it so soon.

Yeah, you need to update.
after the update, does it say Sprint or HTC?

Everything says Sprint (without the S). The guy at bestbuy unfortunately had trouble yesterday activating my phone. There was 4-5 failed attempts. Then he luckily got it activated and jumped thru all the demo stuff. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with it but I went in today and he said I bought the only one they got in stock besides 2 preorders so he couldnt replace it .... Sadface

Thanks guys for the help. It wad in fact a best buy demo phone... They denied accidentally selling it to me, or even accepting the fact it was even their demo phone! It was the strangest experience I've ever had with best buy. It was like I was stuck between a battle of the best buys Anaheim vs Fullerton ! Drove between the two since they kept turning me away... About four times in fact. I finally got some help from corporate and got: free case. Free zagg protector. $50 gift card. And I now have two pairs of beats audio earbuds! They paid off their fault... And it worked haha.

Cdma alltel milestone 3 xt861

As the title says I have an xt861 I wanted to modify the radio with the xt883 radio for use on at&t. I was able to do this successfully twice with mine and my girlfriends droid 3s however they are showing some signs of age and I was able to pick this up pretty cheap in brand new condition as a replacement. My question is should I use the debrick method found in that thread to put the droid 3 rom on it before beginning the process or would it work with the xt861 rom that is on the phone now? If it didn't would I be able to use the one step debrick on the phone to restore it to a factory droid 3 state at least and then start again from there? Unless someone tells me its a bad idea I was gonna try this anyways but I thought I would ask in case someone had any experience trying it with this phone. Another question I've wondered is why can't we install the radio from the xt860 and just use it that way? Is there a difference in the hardware of these two phones?

You might do some searching around but the 861 is the same phone as the 862 I think.
I wanted to come back and confirm that the xt883 radio swap found in developers section on this forum for the xt862 does indeed work on the xt861. If I could thank everyone on this forum twice for this I would as I've been using an xt862 with this tweek for the last year but knowing it works with the xt861 as well opens up the market for replacement phones as I live in an alltel area that is switching to at&t soon and should lead to a flood of the market on used xt861's. I believe a carrier in virginia called blue ridge wireless also carries this phone I hope this will help someone else looking for a deal on a used phone. I did not have to put the droid 3 firmware on it before doing it so it is confirmed working with the 861 firmware and which seems like a much more stripped down version than the verizon firmware. Didn't really see any bloatware on the phone other than blur lol. I did have to use motofail to root the phone as petes one click root didn't work but everything else worked just as described in the guide. Have only used it for a couple hours and haven't run into any issues yet but if I do I will certainly come back and report so everyone will have all the info to decide if they want to go this route or not. Once again, thanks to all the developers on here who take the time to write up these step by step guides and one click tools to help out those of us who are good at following instructions but don't have the brains or time to work this out for ourselves. Now that I have an extra slightly worn out d3 I wont be using I'm going to do some reading on some of the custom roms some have developed and see what I might like or not about those and which ones will work with the xt883 radio. These phones are still very capable for what I need them to do but I'd really like to see just what the phone is capable of when tweeked by the great minds on here. If there's anyone in the hickory/asheville area of nc that needs a d3 to experiment with let me know and I would be willing to loan out my extra one to maybe look over your shoulder and learn a little.

Hi, I went ahead and assumed I'd have to flash the xt883 radio and build.prop. Mine isn't working as is. I'm curious if you had to also replace and tweak the build.prop with your xt861? Mine is the Ntelos version which I believe is the same as Alltel. Also did you have to unlock your phone? Some have said they have had to others have said they haven't. Just trying to get all my facts straight with this minority version of the milestone 3. -Thanks.
