[Q] Recovery mode loop problem - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I think I'm having a serious problem with my Captivate. I was on Serendipity ROM, but I couldn't get google Talk, so I Backed-up my current ROM with CWM and used Odin to go back to Stock 2.1. I used Titanium backup and all to backup google Talk so I can put it on the other ROM.
I did all that, and when I was using CWM to flash back to Serendipity, it said no files in the backup folder. I thought that was weird...i just backed it up a few hours before. I thought it was just an error or something. So i went into CWM recovery mode. I got there, and tried to restore Serendipity, but it still said there were no files. I even checked the internal SD card on my comp, and the files were there. Must have been a signature authenticity thing. So I thought i would just have to start over...re-install the ROM and all that.
So i figure i would have to start over..So i clicked to reboot the system, and when it reset, it just went to the stock android recovery mode. I am now in a loop. I thought i could just use ODIN to get me back to stock, but I can't get into download mode. I've tried pretty much every button combo, and whenever I plug the USB in, it just takes me the stock android recovery.

Try this one if you havent already, take sim, ext sd card and battery out of phone. Open up Odin. Hold down the two volume buttons only. Plug in usb that's connected to computer. and then put in battery.
If this doesnt work, buy a jig. There are tons of threads that teach you how to make one, or you can buy one from a site.

ugh...yeah...I did that. That's the only way I could get into download mode initially. Thanks though.
I've seen this JIG thing around on the forums, what is it exactly? Sounds like a physical thing. What does it do? Is it dangerous?

A jig is a physical object. What it does is applys 301k ohms of resistance to the fourth and fifth internal prongs of the USB port of your phone. This forces download mode
Sent from my Captivate using XDA Premium App

Well, that sounds legitimate. Is there a possibility of physical damage? Also how bad is my problem?? However bad it is, I know causing physical damage is much worse.

Well basically, a Jig is the last resort before the phone is declared completely hard bricked. It is really hard to brick the captivate so hopefully a jig works. All a jig does is try and put the amount of ohms to the phone so it knows to go into download mode, and unless it's not done correctly, there will be no chance of physical damage.

ok thanks. Well I've tried that...didnt work. probably because of my unsteady hand, but i was doing it for a good 2 hours.

Buy one on ebay

[Q] Download Mode Gone?? WTF

So I recently made a thread how adb wasn't working and that evolved into not being able to get into download mode. Now after not being able to get into download mode for days, I'm still stuck on cm7 with no way of getting back to stock. 3-button recovery won't work, the only way to get into recovery is adb reboot recovery. No button and cable methods work to get phone into download mode as well as adb reboot download. I even recently tried http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lojU5bvGz3c which is a makeshift usb jig. I successfully made it but it would only turn the phone on. WTF. I'm afraid to buy a real usb jig from online because it most likely will cause the same thing. What is there to do? I'm completely lost. The phone works, the rom is okay I just cannot get back to stock and get rid of cm7. There are lots of issues I need to fix and cannot because of this. Any ideas?????
EDIT: Now I'm completely f'ed. I tried flashing cm7 instead of MIUI again to try once more if I would have better luck on just cm7, but during flash in cwm the phone turned off because the battery compartment was loose and now the phone boots up and goes into recovery shows some code then turns off again
(This post just in case anyone missed the reason in the edit)
Reason: EDIT: FIXED! Don't know what happened. Rearranged resistors and tried again and finally got it

What's your process to get CM7/Miui installed?
On a side note, ADB won't connect to your device unless you have the Nexus S drivers installed on you computer when CM7/Miui is installed
When I was last on cm7 adb reboot download doesn't work.
Drivers installed
Just sayin
Sent from my unbrickable cappy *bam*
yeah, i distinctly remember the first CM7 build threads that came up here saying that adb reboot download DOES NOT work, and you DO need working 3 buttons or a jig
not sure why that was removed from the threads
A jig should work
You might be coming into contact with the resistors (I can't watch that youtube video from work--firewalled--so I don't know what the setup looks like). Any contact with the them will make it not work. Try insulating them more with some heavy packing tape.
I cut up my mini-usb plug from my car charger (didn't need it), and peeled off all the plastic so I could easily touch the correct two pins with the jig when the hacked up mini-usb is plugged in. Works like a charm. Sometimes if you aren't touching them just right, or if one end of the pin is touching the wrong point the power will come on.
Try harder with the jig, I guarantee you it will work (and you shouldn't have to buy one--it's too easy to do yourself for less than $2 and about 5 minutes).
Good luck!
Just a thought. Are you installing GB boot loaders before flashing CM7/Miui? If so, the way to get into Recovery/Download mode changes. Recovery is vol+/power, Download is Vol-/power.
Just thought I'd toss that out there...just in case

Thanks a ton for the info on GB i've been beating my head trying to get my Mesmerize flashed to a rooted EH09. The vol down button was teh trick i needed.
No download Mode after I897 GB Bootloaders on CM7
Hi there, i've got a question. If i can't get into download mode using the 3 button combination nor the Vol- + Power nor the connect+press buttons+insert baterry trick , do i have chance to get into download mode using the YIG? Thank you
I've lost the 3combo after installing the GB bootloaders with CM7 but the Odin Connection was lost on the SBL, The phone is not even Powering on anymore
If your phone has no signs of life at all, then sadly you are hard bricked...
But it can be fixed through jtag or the unbrickable mod.
So is there hope?

Yes, according to those that have done jtag or the unbrickable mod, these methods are successful. To get better info though, I would recommend going to those specific threads.

I don't think you need jtag (but you can look into it). If your phone is able to at least power on, you should be able to use a Jig to get it into download mode. That is what I did with mine when all the options fail.
good luck.

If the phone doesn't show any signs of life (wich it wont if he failed on sbl) Jtag or Unbrickable Mod would be your 2 best bet. (Id use Unbrickable mode since it will protect you from future issues.)
Sorry haven't checked this thread in a while. My process for going to cm7/miui is flashing stock eclair through odin one click, then rooting and installing cwm. From there I just flash the latest nightly or whatever it is. Nothing I'm doing seems to be wrong
The problem is that I should be able to get into download mode without having to use a jig every single time. 3 button combo should work, but it doesn't when using cm7/miui for some reason

I Think I am Bricked

After looking for quite a few hours on google and xda the only solution thats shows up is to use a jtag and quite frankly that scares the pants off me
here is what happened
-i upgraded the device to froyo then did the super one click root in order to root
-after that i installed the modified recovery to turn off the signature check
-after doing that i flashed clockwork mod renamed update.zip through recovery
-after that i flashed the ICS beta but i could not get the main zip to work through recovery the only other zip i had on my sd card was the kernel so i flashed that and it worked, in clockworkmod 5.0 it wiped everything on the phone so i reloaded the 2 zips i flashed the rom there and it rebooted. (this is out of order from the thread so i know this is what causes the next problem.
now when ICS boots up i get an encryption unsuccessful screen saying i need a factory reset, only option given is reboot now. can't bypass the screen, can't access via adb (driver install fails on windows too), cant get into download mode, and can't get into recovery.
how screwed am i
device is
Samsung captivate
-build number 1009
You need Gingerbread bootloaders.
And since you cant get into download mode... You probably need a USB Jig.
Good news is that you see something at startup. I doubt you are totally screwed then.
Second the jig as an option. It has quite the track record on this forum as making the captivate almost un-brickable.
What have you tried as far as getting your phone into download mode? There are sometimes multiple ways (Vol-up + Vol-down while plugging in USB without battery, sim, or microsd installed is how I always seem to get it working). Here is a list:
http://samsungcaptivate.wikia.com/wiki/Putting_the_Phone_into_Download_Mode
To my knowledge, none of that information is dated... but there are those here that know far more about it than I ever will.
none of those methods worked, it just stinks if it would have been any other rom i would have been fine i think but since i can't do anything in user space and everything i do takes me to the ICS android screen i cant do anything.
also for the record i am a noob to samsung devices but i have been doing this stuff to HTC devices for years

He flashed ICS over froyo... are froyo bootloaders compatible?
Im assuming not and thats what caused the brick. Either that or CWM5 doesnt like froyo BL's. Either way.

Did you try this method to get into download mode?
1. Turn off phone, remove sim, battery, sd
2. hold both volume buttons, keep holding for remainder of instructions
3. insert usb
4. insert battery
This has instantly granted download mode on every captivate i've ever tried.

The team hacksung project might be compatible, but the straight port says in the op that you need to flash kf1 first, which included bootloaders.
You aren't hard bricked and your device is recoverable.
If you are still on the froyo bootloaders, try unplugging the usb cable, removing the battery, sim and sd cards, hold vol up+vol down (don't hold power), and plug the usb cable back in. It should take you to download mode.
If your phone responds to adb while it's booting, you can just issue a quick 'adb reboot download' or 'adb reboot recovery' to get it to boot into either without the button combos.
If either of those don't work, you can try forcing it with a usb jig (just a 301k resistance over pins 4 and 5 of the microusb port). Build a jig, take the battery out, plug the jig in, make sure not to touch the jig while it's in or you'll change the resistance and won't work, put the battery back in and it should kick your phone into download mode. Once you're there, simply remove the jig and plug the usb cable back in.
Sometimes the download mode graphic won't show up even if you are actually in download mode. If the phone looks like it hung, try connecting it to Odin anyway and see if it recognizes it.
Edit: forgot to mention, try using adb from linux (virtual machine or livecd will work too). You shouldn't have to mess with drivers and it's worth a shot.

Were you able to get this working again? If so, how? My Captivate with Build 11 of ICS that had been running perfectly for a week got the message you saw regarding encryption.
I couldn't reset, I tried one click back to stock, and now I just get messages saying can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1.
Unbricking Cappy
Are you able to go to CWM using the three button combo? Try pulling out the battery, reinsert, Hold vol-up + vol-down
and hit power button. Let me know whether CWM menu is appearing or not
All I have to say is wow, not one of those things are true
UCKF1 was the first GB leak for the Captivate, not official Froyo wtf :S
you also don't just connect and power on?!

[Q] Stuck on boot screen, 3 hours in.

Hello!
I know that I should have done a lot more research before jumping in but here is what happened. I have also looked everywhere in the captivate forums with no luck. I upgraded to stock Gingerbread from Froyo a while back, yesterday I decided that I wanted to root, which I accomplished with Odin. The rooting went just fine, after that I wanted to flash ICS Slim onto my phone, which I soon realized I needed clockworkmod recovery for. After research found out that it doesn't work using ROM manager so I followed a guide to install it and here is where things went sour, following the guide I installed Hardcore’s SpeedMod Kernel it rebooted and it started normally, passing the AT&T bootscreen but now I am completely stuck on the screen after saying "GALAXY S SGH-l897" and on bottom "SAMSUNG". I am able to access the downloading screen and I just do not want to do anymore damage than I have already.
TL;DR: I'm stuck on boot after installing Hardcore's speedmod kernal, able to get on download screen, don't want to do anymore damage. Long story short, what can I do to repair my phone to a usable state?
Google "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery to Samsung Captivate" 3rd link down to see the guide that I used.
Thank you for taking the time to help!
I think hardcore speed mod kernel is for froyo/eclair that's why you're boot looping, but clockwork mod should work. Try using the three button combo to get into recovery and flash whatever captivate ICS ROM you chose, assuming you have the file in your internal SD.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA
thanks for the reply, unfortunately I don't have any ROM on my internal at all, is there a way to flash a ROM from odin or another software? Or do I have to use the clockworkmod recovery to flash it on?
You can mount USB storage from recovery, so transfer the ROM to your sd card that way

Edit: removed cause you beat me to it
Yes, there is a list of stock Odin one click packages in the development forum stickies.

I am trying to mount the USB Mass Storage from ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.0, but nothing will appear onto my computer, if I could get this to mount could I flash 2.3.5 using Kies Mini? Would the wipe data/factory reset help me here?
Try reinstalling samsung drivers to get your phone recognized. Since you're on 2.3.5 already, Kies will not let you re-download because it assumes you're on the latest firmware already. Use the Odin one click package. Or heimdall one click.
Don't rush. If you're still unsure keep searching. Read thoroughly so errors won't happen
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA
No wiping will not help you lol. Its better to flash back to 2.3.5 and start fresh.

I've got the same problem with my phone, but I arrived there thru different means.. I used an app called Kernel Manager Light, and believe I tried flashing something called like Fastloader, or Fast boot loader.. something.. anyways, looked good for a minute, while it flashed it, then rebooted my phone & since then, it doesn't load past a screen that reads "GALAXY S" then smaller and below it "SGH-I897".. then across the bottom, "SAMSUNG".. Totally stuck there, for DAYS. I've been reading these forums for what seems like ever, and this is the closest scenario I've found to my own situation.
I can't get my phone into download mode no matter what I do. I can't get into it thru ADB. All I get is that screen.
In ADB, when I type C:/ADB devices, it will sometimes recognize my device (tho more often than not it won't) and even whwn it does, as soon as I try to access my phone thru ADB, it just freezes up too.. I hit enter, and the cursor drops down to the next line, but nothing ever happens from there.
Someone please help..?

!!! HELP !!! I'm very wet behind the ears when it comes to this!!! HENSE my username. this started after connecting my cap. to a pc with intentions of exporting some pics. that initial (1st) and Only pc notification about detecting a usb device, my cousin sitting down at the monitor clicked outside the bubble message. Now from this point on which was several attempts i would get could recognize device msg. I did not know this was gonna be the results, i can actually remember noticable gliches and flaws progressively worse and worse. icons looking like they had a bulb burning out, awful lag in dialer and or any commands. I know now after reading similar posts my attempts to back-up,recover, i did several restore sessions, wiped data & system in a last ditch effort to get my phone back! i was on the road out of my state. not a comforting situation. I'D REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP! I'M LEARNING AS I CRAWL ALONG HERE, WITH THAT BEING SAID I'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH ALOT OF THE LINGO! symbols , abbreviations , etc:crying:
Ur post is confusing...
What firmware are u on -- Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread ??
Did u get ur pics copied off of the phone and to the pc. Under the Settings in ur phone is a USB connection setting to select for when u want to transfer stuff to ur pc.
If ur phone is still jacked up from the multiple backup and restores u did, then u may just have to do a Factory Reset from the Settings menu to get things back to normal...but do understand that that means all ur pics and other stuff will get erased, etc.
If the Factory Reset doesn't work, then I would say get into download mode and flash a Stock firmware (GB 2.3.5 i897ucKK4 being the latest official) and then proceed forward from there however u want.
See the stickied threads in the Q &A and Dev forums for help with flashin to Stock and Dev Roms.

Can you still get into recovery!?
If yes, you should flash the original pit file for your n7000 either the 16gb or 32gb. It will automatically re-partition your internal sd to its original state.
Please read more on this from the link below:

Try holding power button+home+volume up key for about 30 secs. Open odin, plug in your phone, try to check odin detects your phone. Sometimes the screen just goes black but it in fact enters recovery. If your phone gets detected flash the pit file and flash any safe kernels just tobe sure then flash any rom you want. Hope you get it sort out.

There are few things can try:
1. check/recharge battery
2. SS service
2. an usb Jig to get the phone in download mode
3. jtag riff box. It can fix bootloader and get the phone work again from hard brick. They have service in many countries.
GL!
@vlxdxmxr
I tried both download and recovery and connected but nothing happens. Is there any other way to make sure whether the device turns on? I remember that on lcd the devices turns black. But on amoled there is no sign of life...
@forest1971
Battery is working. It gets heated up when charged it for 3 hours. Are you sure this is just a soft brick which a jig can solve ? I mean I have changed some mmcblks. Is there any chance that download mode is gone? Then if I m not wrong a jig can't solve this since it just forces to download mode. SS is last option since I have lost my bill...
And another reason I am afraid to go to SS is because I was running a custom ROM. They might not even accept it for repairs.

Sometime a usb jig can help to get the phone in download mode. From there you can flash orig pit file and then flash bootloader (from dr.ketan toolbox). Jig is cheap so should order online and try it. If not work then try jtag. It is more expensive but almost sure will work and will fix your phone. The service may cost around 1/4 of the motherboard. If you need to buy the box itself it cost more and do it yourself with the box is not easy at all.

[Q] Cappy Won't Detect Internal Storage..

Title says it all. Woke up and the phone would not turn on (thought it was SOD). I pulled the battery and rebooted, but it would just stick on the Att boot logo. Tried full wipe/cache/dalvik but not avail. Odin'd back to stock and seemed to work, but realized that everything was installed to the external sd and the internal would not mount. The computer would not read the internal either. At this point, I honestly do not really care to go through a lot of troubleshooting to fix it. If anyone wants to mess with it, use it for parts, etc., let me know. I also have about 3 spare batteries, one of which is a 3200mAh. That being said, if anyone has some simple ideas let me know. My thought is that the internal sd is shot.
I'm gonna take a wild guess . .
you were on an ICS rom and you got the Encryption Unsuccessful message? if you search for EU bug, you will find several tgreads ob the topic.

Was on slim (4.2.2) and did not receive any error. It was completely unexpected. As to the number of batteries, I enjoy camping/backpacking and need multiple batteries when out for more than a couple of days. I honestly don't know how many I have because they are scattered across camping bags, briefcases, etc. No telling how many I actually have.

Well, I lost cwm when I odined back to stock trying to fix the issue. Through this process I seem to have lost the ability to get into download mode using the three button combo. I'll try to jig it tonight and see if I can install can. If so, I'll report back with my results. Thanks guys.

Yea, I'm aware of that. Just not thinking when I was typing. I got it into download mode with a homemade jig. Can't get odin to recognize it on any of my computers at home (no matter what cable I use). Was able to get heimdall to recognize it on one of my usb ports. Tried one of the oneclick packages from AdamOutler. Everything looks like it installs correctly. Phone reboots, shows att screen, boot animation, galaxy S logo, then the screen goes black. If I press the hard keys, they light up, but nothing shows up on the screen (even if I press power button). At least it looks like information is being uploaded to my internal sd (external is removed). Where to go from here......

Use Odin/Heimdall from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18370912&postcount=3
Btw, Odin won't work on same usb port as Heimdall as it installs it's own drivers.
Tried the heimdall one click. No errors in flash. After the flash, it reboots into recovery and gives me the error "failed to mount /sdcard (No such file or directory)". If I reboot, I just get stuck in a boot loop.

Do you have a external sd in your phone? If so, remove it and try again.

It was removed when I tried it last time (i.e., I tried to flash with the external installed and without). I am pretty sure that the internal sd is shot. I had a problem with some block errors a few months ago and believe that they finally got the best of me. A buddy of mine runs a mobile device repair shop and is going to take a look for me. I will report back.
