Cm7 YouTube works! - Nook Color General

This may be common knowledge
I was sad that YouTube wouldnot work on cm7 , but after I changed the user agent on my browser to android desktop YouTube works just fine. Thought this might be helpful to somebody. (Miren)

When they say Youtube will not work they are talking about the Youtube App, which Requires Hardware Video, which CM7 does not have at this time.
Running youtube with Flash from the browser is known to work, even if it is not as high quality and smooth as the APP. Its all we have right now.
Cant wait till the New Kernel Port for CM7

[q]Changing youtube quality on browser site in CM7

When accessing the browser version of youtube on cm7, I can play 320p and below videos fine, but if I get a 480p video it stutters. When I try to press the button to change the resolution it pops up and disappears almost instantly. Is there a way to set it to 320p as default or a way to get this button to behave? I know dsp is probably a ways off so I'd like to get this working. Thanks.
In case anyone is interested, theres a setting in the youtube account options, but it only lets you set it to the lowest quality.
Go to www.youtube.com/xl . it's a much better version of the site for tablets. You can go from SD to HD with one click. Hope this will work for you while we all wait for hardware acceleration, so we can use the proper youtube app.
Thanks, Why was it possible to have hardware accel in Froyo but not GB? Is it that different?

If I remember right, it's a driver issue. Like alot of things for the nook, there were never proper drivers put out for froyo and gingerbread. most of them had to be backported I think. Froyo does have hardware acceleration, but I think it's a hacked up driver. That's no knock to the people who made it, I have a great amount of respect for the devs work.

[Q] Flash player kinda sucks ? Hell yeah!

All this hype around Android made me buy a SGS. Having flash on the browser was one big reason for acquisition. Soon I discovered that flash isn't what is promised, a desktop experience on my mobile device. I say this because most of the time (like 95%) the flash works so bad in my browser, that is barely usable. When trying to watch streams, mostly on news sites I get a message with "The video is not optimized for mobile" and the playback is choppy, sometimes when seeking, takes 10-15 seconds until the choppy playback starts again. If I try to watch something in low quality it works fine, but most of the sites offer good quality video. I expect more from a 1Ghz cpu...
Is this a problem of my device or is it general ? I have the latest Adobe Flash available on the market.
What firmware and kernel are you using?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Do some research... if you are using the Default browser, open it and in the address bar type:
about:debug
and hit go...
Now go into your browser settings and at the bottom there should be an option to set the UA String, select Desktop....
Downside:
some sites will still see your device as mobile.
you have to re do the fix Every time you load the browser...
Alternative:
try Dolphin HD broswer, it has a US string setting in the options already and only needs set once.
Downside:
Is a little slower to load pages than the default browser.
some sites will still see your device as mobile.
An another point, if you are using 3g... don't expect miracles!
sadly he's right ;( its not even working properly over wifi so i cant really say the net is the problem.
id say the problem lies in flash itself and/or its something in the memory management since ive seen stock roms delivering way better flashperformance than any custom so far, so possibility is that the stream freezes and has to rebuffer every time the memmngt cuts the memory, else you could just try to flash ubuntu and see if it works any magic ;P what do it know for all its worth it could be tha b0mb
good luck anyways !

Solution: Flash a custom JVK Gingerbread rom and DO NOT install the flash player from the market, but use the one that comes preinstalled! This way you'll have 720p flash videos playing smoothly.

I guess its rather a problem with some websites.
I never had problem with Flash player 10.1 or 10.2 (i am MIUI rom but i had previously JVK)
No problem with my SGS but i dont use flash that often so it could be as said some sites .
Use Dolphin HD browser mostly .

I have stock JS4 ROM, sorry forgot to mention this in the main thread. Also I am using flash only via Wifi. Actually I am using Opera Mobile and I've set the UA to Firefox Desktop one. Gonna try the idea with stock browser, maybe Opera has messed up something.

So now that Stock has Flashplayer...

Do you guys think it will be possible for the devs to put a good fully working flashplayer into the various ROMs? Hoping for some full on flashplayer love on CM7 or Honeycomb V4 2nd ed.

LOL !!!
For some reason I really like this thread
dalingrin has already said that the B&N Flash won't be included in official CM7. The Honeycomb demo (that is all we basically have) doesn't have fully working DSP like CM7 has so it doesn't benefit from this release.
With that said, I am sure someone will make a CM7 ROM with it included eventually.
Yeah, and from what I can tell, there's nothing special about B&N's flash vs the 10.2 in the Market. Then again, I don't like flash for many things on the NC, so maybe I am missing the differences. It is pretty heavy on CPU cycles. I don't deny others the opportunity like Lord Steve though.
What is special about the stock flash player vs CM7?
The 1.2 version of flashplayer has dsp decoding enabled for some video content which should improve video performance. You can extract it from the 1.2 update zip on BN.com
As already stated CM7 has always had flash support. While B&N flash can be used in CM7, it has limited benefits. B&N flash on 1.2 Froyo and CM7 does have DSP support for videos "Optimized for mobile." Unfortunately, videos that are optimized for mobile seem limited to mostly YouTube.com where you'd be better off using the YouTube app anyway. For videos that are not optimized for mobile, the newer Flash 10.2 from the market is better.

This is good to know! I noticed from sites like crackle Dolphin mini set to desktop says "This video is not optimized for mobile". So 10.2 flash with Hulu fix would be best here. Dolphin mini set to Desktop seems to play crackle well with the flash based on B&N 1.2 Froyo and Hulu fix where Opera Mobile video freezes but audio continues until I sync it. The Opera Mobile browser at crackle does not say "This video is not optimized for mobile".
When using the flash based on B&N 1.2 Froyo with the Hulu fix in Opera Mobile at the Hulu website, it does not say "This video is not optimized for mobile". Now part of the Hulu fix is to make the browser look like window/mac desktop. We also throttle the file to 288p thru settings. Do you think B&N 1.2 Froyo flash might be better here? My guess is not, it is only Opera Mobile being made to look like window/mac desktop, not hardware acceleration dsp. Dolphin mini will not play the Hulu site.
I am using the Hulu fix of libflashplayer.so for both 1.2 Froyo update and 10.2 flash. I wonder if that has any bearings? Could this actually negate the dsp acceleration of of B&N update for optimized mobile videos? I think it is modified from 10.2 version of flash. I justed loaded video from youtube website. In Dolphin mini and Opera Mobile they did not appear to have dsp acceleration. When played from YouTube app they were much better. I am going to reboot and play video's again. This will negate the Hulu flash fix and restore 1.2 Froyo update.
With the Hulu fix of libflashplayer.so and all browsers it is hard to know what is best or a method to test them all out with? To complicated matters I also have a motorola xoom bluetooth keyboard. At least I can turn bluetooth off.
What I learned.
How to optimize use of Flash 10.1 from B&N 1.2 Froyo, Flash 10.2 from Market, Hulu fix of libflashplayer.so, Opera Mobile and Dolphin Mini in CM7, specifically phiremod V6.1 OC 1300 with 4/23 kernel set at interactive 1300/300.
From Dal: "...B&N flash on 1.2 Froyo and CM7 does have DSP support for videos "Optimized for mobile." Unfortunately, videos that are optimized for mobile seem limited to mostly YouTube.com where you'd be better off using the YouTube app anyway. For videos that are not optimized for mobile, the newer Flash 10.2 from the market is better."
Hulu fix of libflashplayer.so can be used in 10.1 and 10.2 versions of flash.
1) In 10.1 it negates the DSP support for videos "Optimized for mobile." at sites like youtube, and makes sites like crackle perform like it had 10.2 version of flash.
2) In 10.2 it allows Opera Mobile to play back Hulu videos on the nook. Can be used with Dolphin mini as well (see edit at end of post). For ease of use at all flash sites I recommend Opera Mobile for Hulu style sites and Dolphi mini for non Hulu style sites.
Conclusion: Install 10.2 and Hulu fix of libflashplayer.so. Tweak Opera Mobile for Hulu. Redo install of Hulu fix of libflashplayer.so on each reboot. Use Dolphin min for all flash video playback at sites like crackle, cnn, etc. Sites like Hulu, Espn3, and others where flash video playback is blocked, use tweaked Opera Mobile. Opera Mobile makes these site look like it is a desktop window/mac. Use YouTube app for playback of videos at the YouTube.com website. Flash will appear to be smooth in all of the above situations.
Edit: I can now make Dolphin min work for Hulu style sites as well. But it is more functional to have one browser for Hulu style sites and one browser for other flash sites then to switch the setting in Dolphin min.
See this post for making Dolphin work for Hulu. Some details: Hit Menu - Toolbox - Settings. Uncheck Load images. Under Advanced settings - Enable plug-ins - change to Always on. Under Menu - Toolbox - User Agent Check Desktop (I use this last setting for both the Hulu and all non Hulu style flash sites).

Thanks for the conclusion part of your post as that help clarify for me what content to run on what browser. However, and someone please correct me if I remember incorrectly, hasn't the Hulu libflashplayer.so fix been baked into the nightlies for some time now? Just don't want people (myself included) constantly updating something unnecessarily.

I was running the nightlies from a sd card and phiremod's version from emmc. Once cm7 and phiremod V6.1 got video working smoothly, I loaded a 16gb SanDisk SD card with lots of music and transcoded movies. So I no longer run the nightlies.
Phiremod V6.1 is based on a fairly recent cm7. To make it work with hulu I had to manually load the Hulu libflashplayer.so fix, install Opera Mobile, and tweak it configuration to get it to look like a window/mac desktop. Every time I reboot Hulu's website videos no longer work as the adobe flash player reinstalls its version of libflashplayer.so. When I change this file back to the Hulu version they work again. So unless the nightlies have a tweaked Opera Mobile and a script to replace libflashplayer.so after flash initialize the directory on reboot their is no way it can play flash videos at Hulu website. Most other flash website will play correctly. Maybe that is where people are thinking that the hulu version is baked in. Espn3 and some of the network sites are other places where flash videos only work with the Hulu modifications.

For cm7 at least, it is Adobe and Hulu who are blocking some flash sites. The developers are amazing here as they have hardware acceleration working better then the B&N update 1.2 froyo has. They have better codecs, better acceleration, and have figured out ways to get the block sites to play. Plus they talk to us through the forums. I really appreciate their efforts and think most people here would agree.
It you want to make B&N flash froyo better you could take the libflashplayer.so hulu fix and replace it in a newly rooted version of the updated stock software(actually they are working on it). It would get rid of the chopiness that their 10.1 Adobe FlashPlayer has. I found this for now
"It's not a full root. But it does allow you to side-load some applications."
See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1051235
It would be necessary to side Load something like File Expert to make changes to move the hulu libflashplayer.so to their com.adobe.flashplayer/lib directory and set the correct permissions.

This was a joke btw, i cant say enough good things about the devs here and all the work that has been done in the nook. Im extremely happy i made the purchase, i could not ask for a better tablet.
Doh! My bad, I haven't looked into the issue since HC V4 2nd ed. I read at the time that flash wouldn't be on the NC because of a missing driver, so my thinking was that the B&N flash would perhaps allow for extracting the needed files to get it in other roms. I put CM7.0.2 on an sd card last night and WOW, I can't believe I didn't do it sooner, lol. Screw that unstable no app working HC preview, lol.

[Q] Youtube HQ vids

I was curious if anyone has problems playing the vids on youtube that are HQ. If I turn off the HQ for the the vid then it plays no problem.
When I leave it on, a msg from the app displays just saying there was a problem playing your video please retry.
I've experienced this only in one other app recently released by funimation.
Hulu and netflix work fine for me. I have tried a multitude of roms to see if its linked to specific ones.

Question has been asked a million times . Anyways here's your answer, you need to use an older version of the youtube app for HQ to work. AFAIK the last working version is 2.1.6. Happy youtubing!
I have seen this a million times as well. But I never really paid any attention because I didn't care.
But yesterday I was testing some system app mods, so I ended up downloading YouTube from the market. HQ videos were playing for me.
I guess that's unusual or whatever. Maybe they weren't really HQ quality, I don't know. But they were playing.
Me and the kid watched funny cat videos for over an hour.
Non-opengl, no system mods that would matter.

Okay, well I had flashed a couple of times since I posted that, and when I went to try it again, it didn't work. I knew I wasn't wrong the other day, so I reflashed what I thought I had been running before, and now the HQ videos are working with the current market YouTube.
The change between working and not working was I didn't flash the "take1" kernel like I had before.
So this is the setup. I am running a straight build from source, without opengl. I built it myself, but that shouldn't matter. It was built on April 8th, and comes with the standard kernel (no NAT filter or any of the new commits.)
The only difference between mine and the eyeballers (not counting any cherry-picking he may be doing) is that I compiled in a port of PDroid. There are some changes to some system apps, but I don't think that would matter.
Basically, anyone running a straight flash of eyeballer's April 8 build should have the same ability to run the videos with the HQ button on or off. I will not swear they are true HQ videos, I don't know that for certain. But the videos run either way.
EDIT: Let me know if anyone else has this working. I don't know much about YouTube or the whole HQ/HD thing and may be losing my mind.
I thought I had isolated the problem to a gapp, but now am not so sure. I will test again if no one else can get these working. I have uninstalled and reinstalled a bunch of stuff, and don't want to keep doing it if everyone can see HQ with the above setup.
Maybe everyone can in any setup and only the few people on this thread haven't realized it yet. idk.

Ah I see you are using a CM9 build. There might be something to that. I'm on CM7.2 . Maybe in CM9 it got fixed somehow.
I thought it was working in cm7 as well. Maybe it was just a modded app though, which is no better than an older apk.
Well, unless someone with cm9 tells me it's unique, I will just assume everyone has it working. They probably do, I have never looked at it before I saw this thread the other day.

My experience has been that HQ sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I believe it is due to the actual quality of the video being played. For non-HD videos the HQ is lit up and the movie loads and plays fine. For HD videos that are actually HD you get the error message and have to uncheck HQ to get the video to play.
I have had this experience in several different configurations:
eyeballer's opengl builds, original kernel
eyeballer's opengl builds, updated kernel
eyeballer's opengl 4.9, updated kernel take 2 (current setup)
I would like to know if others have the same experience with "HQ" working for what seem to be non-HD videos and not working when the video actually appears to be HD.

[Q] Audio missing from end of YouTube videos

Hi,
I've got a problem with the last few seconds of audio missing at the end of YouTube videos.
I'm using Flash version 11.1.111.43, the last one available for CM7.2. The CM7 is edowar's from a while back, with kernel 2.6.32.9.
The audio is missing during the first playback of the video. But if I then rewind the video and play the last few seconds again, the audio plays as normal.
It happens with all the browsers I've tried, including Dolphin, Opera Mobile, and the stock browser.
Please could someone provide a solution. I'd rather not upgrade to CM10 as I'm happy with the setup on this phone. But I watch YouTube videos a lot, and having to rewind the last few seconds each time is becoming tedious, so if I have to upgrade to CM10, I will. Ideally, I would just like to alter Flash in some way.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Jacko
If anyone is still using edowar's CM7.2, or indeed any CM7.2, please could you check a short YouTube video in your web browser, using a desktop user agent, and let me know if there is audio all the way to end?
This would help me to know whether or not there is something wrong with my setup.
Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Jacko
Well, at least I've learned that I'm the only one still watching YouTube on CM7.2.
I hope the gains from CM10 have been worth it for those of you who have upgraded, such as it being faster, more stable, and perhaps even that the FM radio and HDMI work.
Personally, I have always doubted that this phone could handle anything heavier than CM7 (which it only just manages to do with selective use of Autorun Manager, or something similar).
Or, I could just be in the wrong forum. But asking either Google or Adobe about a non-supported operating system running on an old, unpopular device, just doesn't seem worthwhile.
Anyway, I'm off now to kill this browser process and clear the various caches, before I crank up Aqua Mail to wade through some spam.
See you all later,
Jacko
Your not the only one using cm7.2 as am also a big fan. Most of us don't come here often, hence the delay in replying.
Well currently am using cm7.2 blackace by gundul which is ultra stable n fast with efficient multitasking capabilities.
It was also ported from edowar I think cos it came with his kernel as default.
You could give it a try, I can guarantee you that that Rom is the best in this forum so far.
Also u could try abens cm7.2 kernel to over come sod. Also CKs new kernel rocks this Rom really well.
Hope you find all these info useful.
Thanks for the reply. Whilst I appreciate it, my question was about YouTube and the Flash plugin cutting off the the last few seconds of audio on CM7, rather than which other CM7 ROMs I could change to.
Are you saying that audio does not stop early at the end of YouTube videos on your CM7 ROM?
If audio plays all the way to the end for you, which version of the Flash plugin are you using? You can find this out at http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html
Your post on other CM7 ROMs may still be useful if I do have to change my ROM. But I would rather not go to the trouble unless I was sure that it would solve my YouTube audio problem.
Regards,
Jacko

But I would rather talk about audio with the Flash plugin and YouTube on CM7, if you don't mind.

All I wanted was for someone to confirm whether or not the audio plays all the way to the end of YouTube videos in CM7.
Can someone with CM7 please try a YouTube video and tell me if the audio plays all the way to the end, or if it stops a few seconds early?
You don't have to tell me how to fix it, but PLEASE can you just test ONE YouTube video.
Thanks,
Jacko
