[Q] Cant update to 2.2.1 - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I have SGS I 9000 in Germany. Kies 2.0 is offering the upgrade, but as soon I start the upgrade, it abruptly terminates and says connection with the device is lost.
I have tried it on three different laptops, so looks like the problem is with phone.
However, I have never rooted my phone or installed custom thing. I am currently on Froyo 2.2. Build No is FROYO.XXJPO
can anyone tell what is going wrong?

Firewall or internet connection first culprits .
next is bad USB connection .

Hey,
First: Check if you use the USB port which is directly at the mainboard (often not this which are in front of the PC)
If doesn't work yet, try to un- und later reinstall Kies.
If yes and still longer doesn't work, I think it's the best to start flashing via Odin.
It's easy and fast:
1)Download Odin and Fimware
2)Put FW-files in Odin PDA: (if 3 files [PDA:code-file,Phone:modem-file,CSC:csc-file]
with .pit-file and repartition ckecked - if there is only 1 file,
put this PDA and don't use .pit-file and repartition)
3)Put Battery off, then put sgs in Download-mode (Vol-,Homebutton and then Powerbutton)
4)Connect to PC -> when you see a yellow box in odin - it's added
5)Start flashing and wait until "Pass" (in green) is written and the Phone reboots
FINISHED
The Firmwares you get from samfirmware.com
Good Luck

no success yet
hi
no success yet, with un installing and reinstalling kies.
as also mentioned earlier, i have tried it on three different laptops.
i am not sure about Odin, Frankly speaking, i am very naive at such things.
definitely looks like a problem with phone. May be some app is not letting it happen.
this is because, phone does gets connected to kies, but once i start the update, it terminates the connection. Should I remove the external memory card???

Try but I think that it won't wotk, too.
Checked the thing with Usb-ports?
Oh I also get another idea:
Maybe your download-mode doesn't work and so the phone only dosconnect as going into it.
So try if it works.
- Shut down
- Press Volume down, Homebutton and then the Powerbutton pressed.
If you don't see the yellow (with a working android sign) screen after 2 or 3 seconds, it seems to be the reason for it.
If this is, you must google for "3 button mode galaxy s doesn't work"
nut this is a lot more complicate then flashing via odin.

nops USB also did not work
Neh...USB thing also didnt work out...now i ll try removing the external memory.
Hope it works.
Another thing, back in Nov I was able to update to 2.2 from 2.1.
so puzzled, that why this time its giving this error

Yeah but sometimes something runs wrong and we don't knoe what.
That's the a bad point on a big configuratable system like android
Good luck at all

Hi,
I live in germany too, but I'm on darkys v9.3 so I won't update via KIES but I would like to know what kind of firmware it is. Is it jpy, js2 or js5? Or even something different. Please let me know.
And by the way try the download mode mentioned above.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

Why you don't have a look at hos forum here?
9.2 was JPY and 9.3 is based on JS5.
The next version will based on Gingerbread.

[q] odin3 help!

I have a samsung i9000 with stock JF3 and had rooted and lag fixed it but was having problems downloading apps, paid at first then all downloads begun to fail.. Anyway I tried to use ODIN3 to re-flash the original firmware but to no avail!! I took the battery sim card and sd card out put the phone in download mode, Then started odin3 and connected the phone. Odin3 can see the port but just stays on analysing files... Have then disconnected and tried over and over and over... so many times I don't care to remember. It never gets passed the analysing files. It did fail twice, but that was something to do with samsung kies stealing the COM port (I think!!). Anyway thought I would try and update the firmware through samsung kies. But just get the unable to upgrade this firmware. Which I'm surprised at as most seem to have the option think its to do with my firmwares but not sure.
If anyone could shed light on this also it would be much appreciated!!
Code XXJF3, Modem XXJF3, CSC XENJF3
Anyway to the point of this topic. I Now want to just flash the new Firmware myself but am wondering, If I could not connect odin3 to re-flash the original firmware... Am I going to have problems re-flashing with downloaded firmware! Am thinking there's a great chance of bricking my phone. Doing it all in the correct order so dont understand why it wont connect!!!
Also is there another way/program I could use to flash my device???
You could try using Samsung Kies to install the JM1 official firmware

Thanks I shall try that!, got lots of USB's plugged in... I am on xp... If this does not work though, is there an alternative to ODIN3??? or am I stuck on stock JF3... As that would be unbearable.. no samsung update and cant do it myself!!!! I have noticed a few of the senior members do live in Holland, so I shall put it out there that if one of you nice dutch fella's who know's what your doing wouldn't mind having a look at my sgs for me I would be very much greatfull! Holland isn't the biggest of places so I would be willing to travel.... Thats how much I wanna get this sorted!!
Subject Solved
Well I have found the answer!!... Well for me anyway!
I was following the information everywhere as to how to put my SGS into downoad mode!: Volume up + home + Power button... I was assuming this was correct as it was loading up with an android menu with the following options: Restart phone, Update via update.zip, restore to factory settings. I thought while in this I was in download mode. No I wasn't!! LOL... God knows how many times I was trying to connect odin3 and to no avail. I have now found out if i press volume down + home + power button... walaaaa A big green android man doing what appeared to be some digging (Didn't stay on screen long) also with DOWNLOADING in huge green letters... I am now assuming this maybe download mode and I will have better joy attaching my SGS to odin now... If I am wrong someone may slap me in the face with a giant swordfish and leave me for the rats!

JI5 via Kies !!

No idea what this update does but i plugged my phone into Kies and it said there was and update, it flashed fine. And it booted. GPS lock in 5 seconds inside!!!
swype with voice input, signal meter fixed!!
hd camcorder and media hub
task manager did we have one before?
compass appears broken still
GPS is working at my work which im on the 1st floor of a 4 story building, it has never ever worked in here before.
I use to get crashes with flash lite sometimes, pages that were broken now seem to work.
downloading it now.....more info as I have it.
- flash finished...rebooting...
- reboot successful...re-rooting and posting screenshots and info to come..
Version
PDA: T959UVJI5
Phone: T959UVJI5
CSC: T959TMBJFD
Build Time: 2010.09.22
Changelist: 584835
Doesn't seem to be much different from JI4 on a cursory examination. Haven't had a chance to step outside and test GPS. The 5.1 SRS sound effect for video playback is still as broken as it was in JI4.
First time I've gotten a lock outside (in my back yard) to hold after walking back in my basement (where my downstairs den and lab of doom reside). Accuracy and whatnot seems fine. Will have to wait till later to drive around and see if the GPS decides to not develop a mind of it's own and move around on me.
Holy ****! I might restore my phone to stock and flash this update!

are you on stock firmware?
How do you use kies?
Once you are in KIES mode you do have to back out to the Home screen for KIES to actually work...Figured that out the hard way a long time ago.
And it only reliably works with the Samsung driver. the Android ADB drivers for the sdk no worky...

Download KIES
http://www.samsung.com/ae/consumer/...XSG/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=support
Put phone in KIES mode
- settings - applications - usb settings - Samsung KIES..
Back out to Home screen or KIES connection will not work...
Start KIES...plug in phone....you should begin to see an MTP mode screen on the phone....
After a bit (KIES takes forever to start) you should be in. Assuming your running a JFD derivative firmware (I was running Bionix 1.3 when I updated) you should be ok.
Your mileage may vary...

I was running Bionix 1.3 rooted when I got the update. I'll assume that this will likely work for any JFD derived firmware....Your mileage may vary..
I checked my settings for an update and it gives this error "DM initialisation not ready. Check network or SIM card." This is obviously different than the regular "no updates" popup.

All of my apps and settings remained intact after the update.
I just figured out too that you have to be running the Samsung UI Launcher. I could not get it to connect using ADW and then when i switched back to the Sammy one it connected perfectly and offered me the new update. Installing on my Rooted Vibrant as we speak!

Help upgrading my firmware on Captivate!

So ive spent the last 6 hours or so trying to get kies v 1.5 and kies mini to recognize my phone to upgrade my firmware. Im still running ECLAIR2.1 !!
Ive tried everything including using TW launcher and playing around with the different usb settings. Kies mini wont recognize it and kies v 1.5 did recognize it but when i started the upgrade process it said no response from server, please check if your internet connection is activated!!
This is extremely frustrating. Any help would be much appreciated. My phone is a rooted rogers i896 version.
Try rebooting phone/ computer or reinstalling kies, maybe it don't like you right now
Try kies mini. Also, uninstall any Samsung drivers first, then reinstall the specific drivers that kies mini requires. You might also need to turn usb debugging on. This lays it all out nicely:

If its win7 or xp pro
Try right click Kies ,run as administrator.. it worked for me, it was slow to respond at first
Have you ever flahed an I9000 ROM on it? If you have, that would have changed your product ID code in the nv_data.bin file, therefore making it not recognizable in Kies.
If you haven't done this, I don't know what the problem is. Sorry. But I suppose there's a thread somewhere here that can fix it.
You need to only have kies mini. You can't have kies and kies mini for it to work.

Sounds like you need to flash back to stock first. Here's a link to a guy's thread that should help out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979133
After this, I think you will be ok.
If all you wanted to do was get 2.2 firmware, he also has a version of that, so kies wouldn't be needed.
Thanks ill try that once im off work

[Q] Bricked My Phone :-(

Hi
I tried to upgrade my phone, I9000s, from 2.3 to 2.4 this afternoon via Odin and it has gone wrong and I think I have bricked the phone.
I cannot get into download mode now, I could before after bricking, but not now, and all I get is the phone and computer symbols.
Can anybody advise me what I do next.
I am in the UK
Thanks

If you tried to go from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 and you got screwed bootloaders, you might need to take your phone to service. But try reading this guide first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1134975. Hope you get your phone up&running again

u mean from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4. so the mistake is
when u turmed ur phone to download mode and connect to pc . Odin didnt regonized ur phone and u press start ? as many ppl want flash fast .
so try this
1st : Move ur battery out . plug ur phone to recharge w/o battery if ur screen turn on . then press vol down+home+power . if not do the same with battery .
if those doesnt work check the :
2nd : remove battery . open Kies to ur PC plug ur phone with USB cable to connect with ur pc , w8 some mins to regonize ur phone if ur screen trying to get on plug the battery to ur phone to recharge via pc then try to get download mode . if nothing of those doesnt work for u then u must
3rd Buy USB JIG from ebay or get ur phone to service (if u had rooted phone u will pay)
It happened to me before...
The only solution was buying a jig on ebay to unbrick the phone.
Before that i sent my phone to repairs and it was solved.
Good luck

The little compute symbol with the arrows is a version of download mode. It is the emergency flash mode and odin should still recognize it and u should be able to flash a full firmware that had bootloaders

its really rare to screwed ur main bootloader on the SGS.. maybe you could buy the jig but i`ve never tried the jig but maybe you could try to take out your battery and wait a couple of minutes.. maybe half hour to be safe, before you try to switch on your phone.. but after you place back the battery make sure you doesnt touch any button except the 3 button combo for download mode.. i`m not sure why but that has been the case for me when i got screwed during flashing new rom when i push other button such as the home button before the 3 button combo the phone just didnt respond..

Hi
Thanks for all the replies, sorry I have not been back on.
Not sure how I managed it, but I got back to the point of the yellow download symbol again and flashed the stock 2.3 Gingerbread I had on file.
All is now working again but it is showing as 2.3.4.
Something has obviously got mixed up though, as I am in the UK and now have Swisscom on start up and close down.
It all appears to be working ok and after a while I managed to root it again.
I suppose I should really looking in to flashing it again so I don't have the Swisscom coming up, but I will leave it as it is until I feel a little more brave after my near miss.
Thanks again.

Could somebody point me to the correct version of 2.3.4 for the UK for me to flash.
I have had another look at Samfirmwares but I am still unsure of the correct version for the UK.
Also, on checking my phone, it is marked as CSC unkown, it that something I need to worry about.

[q] downloading do not turn off target

HELP HELP HELP -- I recently plugged my phone into my com to transfer music. samsung kies then started up and told me i needed a firmware upgrade. I proceeded to upgrade and mid upgrade i received an on screen message that my device wasn't recognised and the upgrade was auto cancelled. I now have a message with bright yellow/green trianle that says "do not turn off target". I have reinstalled kies - no luck. knocked phone on and off -no luck. i'm at a loss with what to do with the phone now !! phone not even being recognised by com or kies. Can anyone help please??? many many thanks in advance... thanks. ian.
Seems that you're new to that, so let me explain: if you see the yellow triangle with the android, you're in download mode. Normally, you access it by pressing power+home+vol down buttons while screen is off. As long as you can access download mode, your device isn't bricked. Now that you can't access anything else than download mode, you have to flash a new firmware with Odin. I recommend you to search for the JW4 firmware here in general section. There you should find help on how to flash it(best is Faryaab's thread).
maybe you can try and do a hard reset and flash a ROM from yr SD card..reboot in recoverymode..if the phone does not reboot..try and run the rooting program, might work. But most likely you'll have to reinstall the firmware...

Yep, I don't think that he has rooted, so flashing a ROM won't work.

I don't really think that he rooted his phone ever before, so I don't think that he needs root now... but if he wants to try it out, CF-root or DoOMlords rooting kit are the right choises.
